Jan 20, 2013I bought an Acer Aspire V3-571G brand new a few weeks ago and I'm sending it back for a refund. I'm currently having problems with formatting it. I need to remove all my personal information from the laptop but Windows 8 was pre-installed with no recovery disks in the box. I tried running the installer on an OCZ solid 3 which is what is running Windows 7 and the installer also crashes. Is there a way I can get the error before it reboots the installer?

May 10, 2013I have a newer Toshiba laptop that I tried to clean reinstall Windows 8 using the "reset" feature. I wiped the hard drive completely deleting all partitions. Now I cannot boot into anything. Short of ordering recovery dvds from Toshiba, is there a legal way to reinstall Windows 8 back on this laptop?

May 12, 2013My Windows partition has a corrupted file system. I've tried fixing it, so far nothing works. At this point I'd just like to format it so that I can shrink it and use some of it's space on another partition. I have to format it before I can shrink it because it is corrupted. Would formatting it like this affect the Windows product key? I don't want to mess that up, in case I buy recovery media in order to re-install Windows.

I am trying to copy files to it so I can transfer them from my PC to my Laptop, however whenever it finishes copying files and I plug it into my Laptop, it needs formatting. I have tried copying files to it and them plugging it back into my PC but it says it needs formatting again. It is annoying me because I am trying to copy a disk image which is 16gb and it takes hours to copy to the Micro SD Card but when i unplug it from my PC it suddenly needs formatting. I am using NTFS Format, i cant copy my files on Fat32. It also doesn't let me format the card, its saying 'Windows was unable to complete the format'. This Micro SD Card is basically unusable.

Jul 3, 2014Yesterday, I clean-installed Windows 8 Pro x86 on an old Dell Vostro 1400 laptop which had been running Windows 7 Ultimate, and it activated and ran fine, without even a single exclamation point in Device Manager. I applied the update necessary to make the Store offer 8.1 and proceeded to install it as I've done on a couple other machines. After downloading the thing, it errored out with:

Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
When I clicked the OK button, it then gave me the informative and grammar-challenged error box:
Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0xc1900104

Ever the optimist, I clicked Try again, and of course, it proceeded to download all over again from scratch, only to error out in the same way. I then downloaded all the Windows 8 updates, although just the one had been necessary on my other machines that successfully upgraded to 8.1, and tried again, only to get the same result.
Today, I've discovered the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Assistant, which avoids the lengthy download of the upgrade every time (Microsoft, maybe you should run it implicitly before downloading 3 GB of transient data), and it tells me:

Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
Obviously, no BIOS updates are available, and what exactly is the problem here with my BIOS. The obvious googling turned up nothing except some people with Sony Vaios that had the same problem, which was corrected with a BIOS update, and of course, there is no information on what their BIOS update does to make the 8.1 upgrade possible.

1. Can the ISO file that was automatically downloaded by the system during windows 8 upgrade to 8.1 be saved or backed up? the download was about 2.6 GB.

Dec 15, 2012I'm stuck. I ran Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant prior to installing Win 8. According to the report I needed to delete Intel(R) Pro Network Connection 12.1.12, which I did.
I upgraded to Win 8 but now I have no permissions. I'll looked at all the threads about opening a cmd windows, which I can, but since I logon to the O/S with just user level permissions I can't issue any admin level apps. I can't even navigate to my C: drive. I get 'Access is denied'.
I'm tried right-clicking on the Command Prompt and 'Run as Administrator', nothing. Which makes sense since I'm logon on with only User rights.
I need full admin rights. I can't update my HOSTS file which really screws up my FTP and Telnet sessions.
I cannot logon as administrator, so I can't change anything. Should I reinstall??

What's better What will my recovery options be if I get a nasty virus? Also once my ssd is in it can't fit everything so when i want to download things and programs to the old HDD that will be fine right i can still access them from the desktop.

So I was wondering if there is any way to do this upgrade without losing any data? For example, is there something I can do with slmgr? Or can I maybe just insert the 8.1 Pro disc and do an upgrade?

Using the guide (User Profiles - Relocate to another Partition or Disk), I had relocated my user profiles to D: Drive, when I installed my windows 8 Pro. I was able to go Windows Store to download 8.1 but I get the above error ...
Can I use the same guide and move back all user profiles, including local admin to C: Drive? and then upgrade to 8.1?

From time to time I noticed there is installed a US keyboard, I am UK based and any setup keyboard/date etc are in UK format. Also when I installed the windows I selected (autodetected) the UK settings.
Also, I noticed that the US keyboard does not exist on the layouts (I am using Greek and UK), so in order to get rid of this, I have to add and the remove the US keyboard, but after a while re-appears!
Windows 8 Pro Upgrade Boots To Desktop
Nov 2, 2012I Upgraded Windows 7 Home Premium 64 to Windows 8 Pro. Windows 8 now boots to the "Start Page" then a couple seconds later goes to the Desktop. This isn't something I configured it just does it. I do have Start8 from Stardock installed but it isn't configured to go to the desktop on boot either.
How I can stop this behavior and have Windows 8 stay at the Start Page on Boot?
