View 5 RepliesYesterday, I clean-installed Windows 8 Pro x86 on an old Dell Vostro 1400 laptop which had been running Windows 7 Ultimate, and it activated and ran fine, without even a single exclamation point in Device Manager. I applied the update necessary to make the Store offer 8.1 and proceeded to install it as I've done on a couple other machines. After downloading the thing, it errored out with:
Couldn't install Windows 8.1
Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
When I clicked the OK button, it then gave me the informative and grammar-challenged error box:
Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0xc1900104
Try again Cancel
Ever the optimist, I clicked Try again, and of course, it proceeded to download all over again from scratch, only to error out in the same way. I then downloaded all the Windows 8 updates, although just the one had been necessary on my other machines that successfully upgraded to 8.1, and tried again, only to get the same result.
Today, I've discovered the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Assistant, which avoids the lengthy download of the upgrade every time (Microsoft, maybe you should run it implicitly before downloading 3 GB of transient data), and it tells me:
This PC doesn't meet system requirements
Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
Obviously, no BIOS updates are available, and what exactly is the problem here with my BIOS. The obvious googling turned up nothing except some people with Sony Vaios that had the same problem, which was corrected with a BIOS update, and of course, there is no information on what their BIOS update does to make the 8.1 upgrade possible.
I've just upgraded from win8 to win 8.1 using the windows update (store), my questions are :
1. Can the ISO file that was automatically downloaded by the system during windows 8 upgrade to 8.1 be saved or backed up? the download was about 2.6 GB.
2. If so can the backed up file be used to do a "clean install" in future on the same machine?
Can I use my windows 7 on another pc after I upgrade to Windows 8?

I've bought a Dell XPS 12 laptop (9Q33 model). It comes with preinstalled Windows 8. According to a support article I've found, this model supports upgrading to Windows 8.1. Where can I get this upgrade? It's absent in Windows Store.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed the windows 8.1 update thinking it would just upgrade the system but it looks as though it's done a reinstall. I've now got loads of things not working, my programs have lost lots of there settings and it seems really slow.
I'm currently restoring a true image back up and I'm praying it's going to work , I don't think I'll bother with 8.1 until I reinstall the system from scratch.
I'm stuck. I ran Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant prior to installing Win 8. According to the report I needed to delete Intel(R) Pro Network Connection 12.1.12, which I did.
I upgraded to Win 8 but now I have no permissions. I'll looked at all the threads about opening a cmd windows, which I can, but since I logon to the O/S with just user level permissions I can't issue any admin level apps. I can't even navigate to my C: drive. I get 'Access is denied'.
I'm tried right-clicking on the Command Prompt and 'Run as Administrator', nothing. Which makes sense since I'm logon on with only User rights.
I need full admin rights. I can't update my HOSTS file which really screws up my FTP and Telnet sessions.
I cannot logon as administrator, so I can't change anything. Should I reinstall??
I have windows 7 and bought windows 8 upgrade discs (still unopened), I have no SSD now but want to buy one. What should i Do install win 8 first then the SSD? Or the other way around? What's better What will my recovery options be if I get a nasty virus? Also once my ssd is in it can't fit everything so when i want to download things and programs to the old HDD that will be fine right i can still access them from the desktop.

So I would like to remove any old windows 7 stuff that Windows 8 might have backed up on the Boot drive. Anyway to find the old windows 7 stuff and how could I delete them?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just got a new laptop, running Windows 8.1 SL. I wanted to connect it to the office Active Directory domain, just to find that it can't. Now I know I can go to Control Panel, to the "Add features to Windows 8.1", and purchase an 8.1 Pro key. But my company has a Windows 8.1 volume license key, and there are still a few available that I can use.
However, I already have everything set up pretty much the way I want it; I don't want to format and re-install Windows. I tried to do the Windows "Add features to Windows 8.1" ("Windows Anytime Upgrade" as it was called in Windows 7) using our Volume License key, but it doesn't want to accept the key.
So I was wondering if there is any way to do this upgrade without losing any data? For example, is there something I can do with slmgr? Or can I maybe just insert the 8.1 Pro disc and do an upgrade?
I upgraded to 8.1 a while back. I just tried to open File Recovery. The icon is blank and nothing opens when I click it. WTH? What happened to it and, more importantly, how do I get this program back?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIs upgrading from Win 8 to Win 8.1 working ?
I used the downloaded .iso (MSDN), but it only offered to keep personal files, all applications were gone after install.
Is this the expected behavior ?
If yes, this will be difficult cause MS has stated that all 8 users must upgrade to 8.1
Do the same applies to Server 2012 R2 (upgrade from 2012 to 2012 R2) ?
It looks like this PC can't run Windows 8.1. This might be because the Users or Program Files Folder is being redirected to another partition.
Using the guide (User Profiles - Relocate to another Partition or Disk), I had relocated my user profiles to D: Drive, when I installed my windows 8 Pro. I was able to go Windows Store to download 8.1 but I get the above error ...
Can I use the same guide and move back all user profiles, including local admin to C: Drive? and then upgrade to 8.1?
Upon upgrading, can I change again the user profiles to D: Drive?
It's posible to upgrade from windows 7 Professional to Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation keeping all programs, files?
I have tried the registry trick but doesn't work for me. It always detect the correct version installed.
I currently run Win 7/Ubuntu 12.10 dual boot. Win 7 is installed, obviously, on my C: Drive and Ubuntu is installed on my D: Drive (Both are 500GB HDD's. Drive D: also is where I Store my photos, movies, document, music, etc)).
I'm going to do a clean install of Win 8 on my C: Drive, but how will I be able to access my Ubuntu install after I get Win 8 all set up?
I want to know how to upgrade Windows 8 single language to Windows 8 Professional, what is the way? Should I use third party program or not? I don't know.

From time to time I noticed there is installed a US keyboard, I am UK based and any setup keyboard/date etc are in UK format. Also when I installed the windows I selected (autodetected) the UK settings.
Also, I noticed that the US keyboard does not exist on the layouts (I am using Greek and UK), so in order to get rid of this, I have to add and the remove the US keyboard, but after a while re-appears!
I Upgraded Windows 7 Home Premium 64 to Windows 8 Pro. Windows 8 now boots to the "Start Page" then a couple seconds later goes to the Desktop. This isn't something I configured it just does it. I do have Start8 from Stardock installed but it isn't configured to go to the desktop on boot either.
How I can stop this behavior and have Windows 8 stay at the Start Page on Boot?
I've started getting the Upgrade to Windows 8.1 now - it's free message when I boot up and it's annoying as heck. It locks up the computer and the only choice is to click the upgrade now button. I was able to Ctrl+Alt+Del and sign out then login again. Got the same annoying message but this time there was a Remind me later button. Is there any way to block it or prevent it from happening? I don't want to upgrade to 8.1 now and perhaps maybe never. This is as bad as a virus.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my computer has become almost unusable. It freezes, can't maintain connections in Internet Explorer, has thousands of event errors, takes several MINUTES to start, and now causes the PSU to shut down during start. I does this with 3 different PSU's. I also can't use secure boot anymore. When I look up event error fixes, microsoft wants me to make registry changes, uninstall and re-install programs, and do other risky things that I'm just not qualified to do. I'm just afraid of really screwing things up beyond repair. It took me forever to get windows 8 installed, and I thought 8.1 would be better.
