View 9 RepliesAfter running CCleaner v 3.27.1900, I am unable to Login to Facebook directly. Selecting the icon in my favorites, IE, only results in the loading icon, with no connection to the site. The same thing occurs when manually entering a search and selecting Facebook.
However, when I receive an email advising me of activity from one of my Facebook friends, I can select SEE COMMENT and go directly and quickly to the Facebook page.
I have used desktop for many years and am used to it. I am sure the tiles thing is better, but I want my desktop. Instead of having the tiles come up and clicking on the desktop, how can I make it just go to the desktop and avoid the tiles. I found something in setup about defaulting to desktop, but that didn't seem to change anything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThere have been a lot of questions about how to boot directly into desktop and avoid Metro. My question is just the opposite. When I'm in Metro and I open an app, it first brings up the desktop and then the app on top of it. I would like to open an app without opening desktop. Is there a way?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running win 8.1 on HP laptop. When I first turn on the unit, the first to appear on the screen is a sports team logo that I put there a while back. However, to be able to continue to the sign-in page, I have to either move the mouse or click enter to get there. Once I enter my password, it takes me to the Start menu. I want to eliminate the first screen and go directly to sign in and then to desktop.

It is continous and you can't access anything as the screen jumps to the other one before you can even do anything!
My laptop is only a few months old and there has been no hardware change/upgrade.I managed to get into the system restore and restored to a point a few days before this issue started but, when the laptop restarted, the issue remain and the screen jumped between the 2 screens.
There are no error msgs or any can of beeps that appear. There was nothing of any note that happened prior to this issue occurring and the laptop worked fine until this issue.
I've got the weirdest thing going on today...I go to sign out my wife from her account on our Windows 8 desktop and login in to mine (administrator) and it logs in...except there isn't anything to see except Start on the left and my name on the right. Not a single icon...when I right click and select all apps....nothing.
I was able to get to tasks and got to the "desktop" and was able to use the computer...I'm typing on it now. But the main screen is completely missing!
I signed out and checked my wife's login and all the app icons are there...no problem. I go back to mine and it's completely empty.
I went to do a system restore thinking something big must be wrong and the system restore says it can't access a file. The whole system was freshly loaded about two weeks ago and doesn't have any strange software running...in fact, I think iTunes is about the only non-stock software that has been added, but even then, iTunes worked fine.
Why is my main screen missing everything, but not on another account on the same desktop?
Is there a way to point Windows to the proper file? Also, system restore from within Windows is not working, but I do have original HP restore disks to use if I get completely desperate...
I have used SSDs for a while now and i recently just got an i3 laptop. I immediately swapped the hdd for ssd and did a fresh install.
It was working fine but recently it started to take a little while to show the taskbar icons after i login other than that it appears to be working well. I forgot how i could trace the slow logins, its been a while since i needed too with Win 7.
The other issue is if i leave my pc for a few hrs and return 90% of the time i come back and chrome is frozen and i have to use task manager to close it and load it again. It works fine but after a hibernate session it is apparently locked and frozen.
I was perplexed about the slow logon process of Windows 8 considering the fact that it starts from an SSD.I have Fast-Boot disabled. The login windows comes up really quick, but after signing in it seemed annoyingly slow to me, like it was waiting intensionally 30 seconds for some cup of coffee before the desktop shows up.
I've googled a bit and found this, and old WIN7 bug still seems to be valid with Windows 8:The Welcome screen may be displayed for 30 seconds during the logon process after you set a solid color as the desktop background in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
Even though I use a wallpaper background, the workaround with the registry hack solved my slow login times. Now logon is as fast as I expect it.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem
create a new DWORD called DelayedDesktopSwitchTimeout and set its value to 5.
It might take several boot up's to work, but after 4 times it worked for me.
I am running win 8.1 and used the Facebook app for a while the I stopped using it. When I tried to login again after a while I can't login and it shows me an error !!! What should I do ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWindows is asking me for a password despite I've never had a password.
Here's what happened:
I've never had a password and choose during the win install to have 1 local account without password.
I used to have a user/login name with an non ascii character (é), and it was causing me some trouble. Hence I decided to change it with ascii only characters. Control Panel, users etc ... properties, changed the name of the local user.
Reboot, and boom, Windows asks me for a password and is displaying the former user name !! But there's no option to change the user name, I've read that there should be a back arrow but it's not here (probably because windows "thinks" there's no point since there is only 1 user).
I don't know what to do, I used a Linux live usb distro to use some tools that can reset password and unlock account, however:
1/ it can only reset password, which seems not to be the issue here, the issue is the wrong user name
2/ the linux tool shows 1 local user with the last update name
So I'm guessing windows is not using the proper name to login, but doesn't provide any mean to change it.
I initially created the thread below but I have since discovered the problem relates to many apps and not just the People app.
People App Opens then Crashes to Desktop
I have a new Dell laptop running Windows 8.1 Core Edition. After only a week I found most of the apps would crash to the Desktop on opening. I thought I had solved the problem by creating a new user account and reinstalling the apps but that only worked for a week before the same problem reappeared.
This is what I have discovered to date:
Initially most apps crashed on openingReinstalling the apps made many of them work but there are still some issues e.g. selecting Maps within Bing weather causes the app to crashThe apps work fine in a new user account or in other local accounts I have not used much to dateNone of the steps recommended in Apps and Tiles Not Working or Responding: Fix in Windows 8 solves the problemI've spent an hour with Microsoft Support who have found no obvious problem and have escalated the problem to the next tier
The problem appears to be due to access rights and priveliges in user accounts since the apps work in other accounts or if I create a new account.
Where the apps are located for each user account and whether there is way of checking that they are set up to have the correct access rights and privileges.
I open up my Live tiles screen on my 2nd monitor. When I open an app, say facebook. All is fine. When I drag from top of screen to bottom with my mouse to close the app, it goes to desktop. Is there a way for me to go back to the Live tiles screen?
Also, is it possible to have the live tiles screen visible all times on my 2nd monitor. I use Stardocks Start8.
I wanted to know if is it possible to switch between modern ui (as it is by default) and desktop apps, all in the same left pane in Windows 8.1?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a question regarding the choice between win 8 and win 8.1. As stated here on 8forums, on October 18th the win 8.1 will be released as final version. Does this mean that i'll be able to download not the win 8.1 preview ISO, but the win 8.1 FINAL ISO? Or i'll still need to run the Upgrade Assistant to download the files for me?
I have a valid win 8 pro key and i want to make a clean install. Still, i wonder is there a reason to wait till win 8.1 will be released to download and install it at once and not to install win 8 and then 8.1 (as it will reset settings and apps i guess).
So the question is - will it be possible to download win 8.1 ISO from microsoft directly as a file (as one can download win 8.1 preview right now) and not use Upgrade Assistant that will download multiple files for me that i'll be wrapping to make an ISO?
Recently i have purchased Lenovo laptop. I got Windows 8 Pro and have upgraded it to Windows 8.1 using Windows store. in future if i want to reinstall my machine, i have to reinstall windows 8 and then again upgrade it to windows 8.1 via store.
is there anyway that i can save my Activation copy and directly reinstall Windows 8.1 Pro?
This will let you open regedit directly to a registry key stored on your clipboard (via shell extension)
Instructions: Install .reg, then copy a registry key to your clipboard. Right click anywhere and "Open Registry".
Can be in either long or short name format. Translates HKCR, HKCU, and HKLM to their full names on the fly. Feel free to change the MUIVerb to anything you prefer. Is working on W7/W8/W2012.
Here are some sample keys for you to test with.
Code:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryBackgroundshell
HKCRDirectoryBackgroundshell
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerCommandStoreshell
HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerCommandStoreshell
;
and here is the .reg. I'll attach a .zip if feedback is good.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryBackgroundshellOpen_Registry]
"MUIVerb"="Open Registry"
"icon"="regedit.exe"
"Position"="Top"
"HasLUAShield"=""
[code]....
I was able to start the install of 8.1 Preview directly from the downloaded .iso file. Just double clicked on it to open in Windows Explorer then double clicked on setup.exe and off it went. This only works from a booted Windows 8 system (not sure about Windows 7).

Didn't need to create a bootable flash drive or DVD.
is there anyway to download shows that are on catch up tv sites like BBC, ITV or 4OD directly to your harddrive to watch at a later date.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIf I start a program (Photoshop, Firefox, for example) from the Start Screen the Desktop appears and the program loads on top of the Desktop, and when the program closes I am left with the Desktop not the Start Screen. Is this normal Windows 8 behaviour? (I have only just acquired Windows 8 and it is taking some time getting used to it!!) Is there a setting which will allow me to start a program from the Start Screen and return to the Start Screen when I close the program, ie allow me to bypass the Desktop (unless I choose deliberately to go to it)?

I am using a dell latitude e6430 laptop and just recently i encountered this problem- The airplane mode of my computer refuses to be turned off.
I tried going to the pc settings > networks but the selection is grayed out and stays at [on]. This results in my computer not being able to connect to the internet.
I have also tried doing a system restore to the date when it was working perfectly fine, but the airplane mode is still grayed out.
The only way i could access my internet on this computer is to tether my mobile phone and connect it to the wifi via USB tethering.
Is there any way to force off the airplane mode(In command prompt etc) or Remove the option?
It is a HP Pavilion. When I power up the machine it opens to "what I presume is the Desktop" OK. However there is only the clock, Wi-Fi and Batt/ACicon on the screen. There are no Apps showing, no Charm Bar and no keyboard shortcuts work at all. If I click any place on the screen it opens to a gmail sign in page and that is it.
I probably should also mention that I get nothing hovering my mouse in the lower right corner. Now the clincher is that this is his wife's machine and she can't remember the PW for this gmail account. So I can't even sign into it tosee if that even brings me anyplace beyond the gmail account.
One thing I did notice was that an automatic update did download itself while I was writing this. I shut down and let them load and restart hoping maybe all would be well on the restart. Not that lucky.
Did I mention he did not receive a disc with themachine nor was he in tuned to create a Rescue Disc. How to get him out of this jam.
