Chrome Freezes Hibernate - Slow Desktop Upon Login With SSD

Feb 1, 2014

I have used SSDs for a while now and i recently just got an i3 laptop. I immediately swapped the hdd for ssd and did a fresh install.

It was working fine but recently it started to take a little while to show the taskbar icons after i login other than that it appears to be working well. I forgot how i could trace the slow logins, its been a while since i needed too with Win 7.

The other issue is if i leave my pc for a few hrs and return 90% of the time i come back and chrome is frozen and i have to use task manager to close it and load it again. It works fine but after a hibernate session it is apparently locked and frozen.

Maintenance :: Delayed Desktop Switch Timeout - Slow Login?

Mar 11, 2013

I was perplexed about the slow logon process of Windows 8 considering the fact that it starts from an SSD.I have Fast-Boot disabled. The login windows comes up really quick, but after signing in it seemed annoyingly slow to me, like it was waiting intensionally 30 seconds for some cup of coffee before the desktop shows up.

I've googled a bit and found this, and old WIN7 bug still seems to be valid with Windows 8:The Welcome screen may be displayed for 30 seconds during the logon process after you set a solid color as the desktop background in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Even though I use a wallpaper background, the workaround with the registry hack solved my slow login times. Now logon is as fast as I expect it.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem
create a new DWORD called DelayedDesktopSwitchTimeout and set its value to 5.

It might take several boot up's to work, but after 4 times it worked for me.

Browsers/Mail :: Chrome Freezes / Crashes Regularly?

Jun 1, 2014

My parents bought an AX3995-UR20 in the last year, and very little has been downloaded on to it, so mostly the computer has the default programs. I have downloaded Word of Tanks onto it, but nothing other than the default game has been added, and I've experienced no issues with the game itself. Some of the problems I've been having are:

- Google Chrome crashes regularly
+ This usually happens when multitasking after Chrome is opened; I'll switch to another program (IE, WoT, etc.) and chrome will freeze, and then crash
+Issues with Google Chrome also happen to IE
+ WoT will update its state as I have Chrome maximized (move to another loading screen/ start game) and this seems to be when Chrome crashes.
+Chrome will also freeze/crash when I do something in Chrome, such as load a gif, without anything else open
- The computer will not update
+ it asks for a restart to update, and then fails to finish and abandons the update
+ this also happens when I attempt to force an update
- Sometimes, after sleeping, the computer will black screen and needs to be turned off manually before it can be used
+ I really don't like manually shutting off the computer every other time I need to use it, I don't want to hurt it/ corrupt data
-Word has crashed when I attempted to save my document; this has happened only once and could be a fluke
- Intel Support Manager tells me it crashed almost every time I log in

I am fairly sure, based on what it happening, that this is a problem with RAM, the computer not being able to handle so much at once; crashes happen during MORE resource intensive times, although I think that the computer should be able to handle these tasks EASILY.

Chrome crashes when more resources/programs used, computer should be able to handle them, however. Windows will not apply updates.

Chrome actually freezes for no reason, too; often, in the middle of browsing a page, it will stop scrolling and then crash.

Windows 8 - Chrome Slow RAM High

Jun 12, 2014

I have just installed windows 8. At the moment it feels like a huge mistake as everything is so slow.

I was using the same computer with windows 7 then that wouldn't load so I installed windows 8. Same machine, same software, same data, just different windows.

I have spent most of the day installing and tweaking but in truth the problem shows itself mostly in my browser, it is just so slow loading the pages. I thought it could be 100% cpu but it turns out the cpu is OK but the ram, 8Gb, is up near 80 and 90 %.

Browsers/Mail :: Google Chrome Freezes Up Entire System

Jul 23, 2013

I upgraded my laptop to Windows 8 around the new year, and until about June everything worked just fine. Then, Google Chrome all of a sudden started freezing up the entire system and required a restart. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it multiple times and every time the same thing happened. Every time I launched Chrome everything froze up. A month later I tried reinstalling it once again and the same thing happened. Is there anything that may be causing this, as it seems very strange for one single browser to have such an effect and I would very much like to switch back to Chrome.

Slow Login On Administrator Accounts Only - Windows 8.1

Sep 26, 2014

I've been using this build, which is equipped with a Crucial SSD and Windows 8.1, for about a month now. When I try logging into a standard account, my system's speed is on full display, logging in in barely 2 seconds. But on an account with admin privileges, logging in lags on the post-password screen for 20+ seconds before loading "Welcome" and the desktop. This is the only variable that causes the problem; local vs. Microsoft linked account, or Task Managaer startup processes enabled vs. disabled are not causing it. I've read that removing Gigabyte bloatware fixes the problem, and while I do have a Gigabyte MB, removing its software did not fix this problem for me.

Network / Sharing :: How To Put Windows 8.1 In Hibernate Using Remote Desktop

Dec 11, 2013

I had a PC running Windows 7 Pro with SP1, in a remote location, that I would wake up using WOL and then operate using Remote Desktop. At the conclusion of the session I would shut down the pc until I needed it again. I upgraded that PC and now find that WOL using Windows 8.1 will only work if the PC is in the Hibernate mode. That's fine but I can't find a way to put it in Hibernate using Remote Desktop. While using Remote Desktop my choices are limited to Disconnect and Sign out. There is no command line command to put the Windows 8.1 pc in hibernate mode.

How I can put the remote Windows 8.1 pc into hibernate at the end of a remote desktop session so I can restart it with WOL when needed again?

New Dell W8 Laptop - Slow Boot Time (Login Screen Appear After 5 To 10 Mins)

Jul 7, 2013

I received my laptop (Dell 17r SE) about a week ago but I have been having trouble with it's boot time. From pushing the power button, it takes anywhere between 5 and 10minutes to arrive at the login screen.

I checked the event log for Diagnostic-Performance, and the eventID100 has popped up quite a lot as "critical." I go into details and the stats are not looking to good. These are the times for multiple boots:

BootTime 175799/153962/217864/640216(This one was the first startup that the laptop ever did)
MainPathBootTime 122899/90262/135072/564816(This one was for the first startup that the laptop ever did)

Along with that critical error, I get other warnings saying apps/drivers/services like Svchost, rdbss, gpsvc, SMSSInit took longer than expected to initialise, thereby slowing startup.

I'm not sure if this is useful but apart from that, the log also shows EventID500/501 error events that state that The Desktop Window Manager responsiveness has degraded due to heavy resource contention.

Desktop Freezes Up Randomly?

Apr 21, 2014

Ever since I reinstalled Windows 8.1 64-bit (Accidentally reset RAID 0 settings) I've been getting abnormal freezing on my desktop. Can't click on icons or do anything that's associated with the desktop, but I can still use my task bar and run any program just fine. After a few seconds it unfreezes, and I can use the desktop again like normal - Just happens like every 15 minutes.

I know this isn't a virus because I recently did a clean installation. I even ran Malwarebytes plus a full Kaspersky Virus Scan. Also checked my GPU / CPU Temps and they are at normal ranges. I have latest Beta Drivers (14.4) for AMD as well.

Desktop Freezes When Empty Recycle Bin

When I right click the Recycle Bin and click Empty Recycle Bin, the desktop freezes: the desktop become unclickable; if I click anywhere on the desktop, it just gives me a "ding" sound.

Everything else works fine, like icons on the dock is clickable, I can go to start and open an app etc.

The way I can empty the recycle bin is open the recycle bin and empty it within the folder.

Browsers/Mail :: Google Chrome Will Not Stay In Desktop Mode

Dec 3, 2013

I'm trying to set Chrome as my default browser and have it open in Desktop mode, but it always opens in Metro Mode if it's the default. I've tried the "Relaunch Chrome in the desktop" (lots of times), but it just beeps and stays in Metro mode. This used to work, but it suddenly changed a few weeks ago, and I simply can't work out how to get it back. I didn't change anything. (Windows or Chrome may have behind the scenes, but I didn't fiddle with any of the levers). Chrome just started launching in Metro mode one morning, and nothing I do will change that if it's the default.

The only way I can open Chrome in Desktop Mode is to set IE as the the default browser. And that is most definitely not what I want. I'm a web dev, and love the Chrome dev tools, so want it as the default.

To make things even more confusing, I've got 2 Win 8.1 machines side by side, and Chrome works exactly as I want on one of them, and not on the other. I've looked everywhere I can think of, and both systems are set up identically, from what I can see.

Screen Jumps Between Desktop And Metro Right After Login?

Sep 4, 2013

Right out of the blue, windows 8 loaded up painfully slow so i restarted my HP g6 laptop. After restarting the laptop the user login screen appeared fine fine but as soon as i login the metro tile screen flashes to a default coloured desktop screen and back to to the metro screen every second. It is continous and you can't access anything as the screen jumps to the other one before you can even do anything!

My laptop is only a few months old and there has been no hardware change/upgrade.I managed to get into the system restore and restored to a point a few days before this issue started but, when the laptop restarted, the issue remain and the screen jumped between the 2 screens.

There are no error msgs or any can of beeps that appear. There was nothing of any note that happened prior to this issue occurring and the laptop worked fine until this issue.

Entire Windows 8 Desktop Is Missing On Login

Mar 20, 2013

I've got the weirdest thing going on today...I go to sign out my wife from her account on our Windows 8 desktop and login in to mine (administrator) and it logs in...except there isn't anything to see except Start on the left and my name on the right. Not a single icon...when I right click and select all apps....nothing.

I was able to get to tasks and got to the "desktop" and was able to use the computer...I'm typing on it now. But the main screen is completely missing!

I signed out and checked my wife's login and all the app icons are there...no problem. I go back to mine and it's completely empty.

I went to do a system restore thinking something big must be wrong and the system restore says it can't access a file. The whole system was freshly loaded about two weeks ago and doesn't have any strange software running...in fact, I think iTunes is about the only non-stock software that has been added, but even then, iTunes worked fine.

Why is my main screen missing everything, but not on another account on the same desktop?

Is there a way to point Windows to the proper file? Also, system restore from within Windows is not working, but I do have original HP restore disks to use if I get completely desperate...

Maintenance :: Windows 8 Loads Slow Into Desktop From Metro UI

Mar 26, 2013

I have a Toshiba Laptop with a Core i3 2.27 GHz 4GB DDR3 Dual Channel Memory and 500GB hard drive. Although this is a problem with both my laptop and desktop, desktop specs are in the specs section. When I boot up windows and then click Desktop in the Metro UI it loads very slowly. I have very minimal programs starting up with windows. I will post a screen shot below of what is starting up with windows boot on my laptop, and post the screen shot of my desktop when I get home. I believe that I have just what I should have booting. There is 2 Intel items that I left booting and some item names JJ, I am unsure if that is my user account or if that is some kind of spyware. Virus scans come back clean, I've done the boot time scan scanned the hard drive in my laptop from my desktop computer as well.

Apps / Software :: Photoshop Elements 11 Very Slow To Open Files On Desktop

Apr 15, 2014

Out of the blue today when I opened PSE 11 and then tried to use it to open a file on my Desktop, it went to sleep. Task Manager showed it "not-responding". Rebooting the computer did not work. After a couple of tries, I waited for 2-3 minutes and it then displayed files on the desktop. I switched the location it was searching, which was Desktop to my photo folder, and everything started working normally. Closed and restarted, and it was fine opening files from my Pictures folder. But, when I switched it to Desktop it went to sleep again for 2-3 minutes. At one point it got a message, which I forget exactly, but basically saying it could not find the file it was searching for??

It seems unique to the Desktop location. The Desktop is part of the operating system (Windows 8.1), and on a SSD. The Pictures folder is on my HDDs. I don't recall making any changes to the setup.

Summary of the symptoms:

1. Only is slow with File, Open, or File, Open As, when the location is the Desktop
2. Operating system (8.1) is on a SSD. Normal file folder is on HDD.
3. Same actions when location is Pictures on HDD is normal.
4. Process Explorer does not seem to detect any activity going on during the "sleeping" mode

Windows 8 Very Slow To Access Files - Green Ribbon Of Slow Death

Dec 16, 2012

I have just built a new computer and Installed Win8. The motherboard, processor, and system drive are all brand new Intel stuff; the media drive is a new Seagate. Programs get up and running just fine, but I have transferred my files over from my old xp machine, and Win Explorer is very slow to access them.

I'll open a folder, and more often than not the thumbs will not be there; I'll then try to open or preview a file and I'll get the green progress bar over the address bar. This will often take up to a minute or more to run, and if I leave it be then the icons will usually appear and the files will then be accessible. If I try to open or preview a file before it's done things lock up on me.

After navigating away from that folder and allowing some time to pass however, the thumbs dissapear again and I am back to square one. sometimes the thumbs will reappear all on their own. this seems to be an issue whether we're talking large files or small, or folders with 100's of files or as few as 8. The very same files are instantly accessible by the new comp from the original locations on my external USB drive and on my xp machine over the network. Once they are copied to the new machine is when things get bogged down. This seems to be the case both on the system drive and the media drive.

Furthermore, right from the very beginning, I've had icons disappearing and reappearing from my start menu apps page.

I have tried the following to resolve the problem:

- I have optimized the folders in question for both the types of media therein, and back to "General Items" again

- I have disabled indexing both on the drives themselves and in the libraries control panel

- I have run a full system virus scan with Bit Defender

- I have contacted Windows support and they have run a scan that showed Windows itself to be working properly

One thing that occures to me is the problem seems to be with the SATA drives and the SATA drives only, but if there's something wrong with the mother board wouldn't my programs have trouble opening too?

Accounts :: Changing Local User Login Name On Login Screen

Sep 15, 2014

Windows is asking me for a password despite I've never had a password.

Here's what happened:

I've never had a password and choose during the win install to have 1 local account without password.

I used to have a user/login name with an non ascii character (é), and it was causing me some trouble. Hence I decided to change it with ascii only characters. Control Panel, users etc ... properties, changed the name of the local user.

Reboot, and boom, Windows asks me for a password and is displaying the former user name !! But there's no option to change the user name, I've read that there should be a back arrow but it's not here (probably because windows "thinks" there's no point since there is only 1 user).

I don't know what to do, I used a Linux live usb distro to use some tools that can reset password and unlock account, however:

1/ it can only reset password, which seems not to be the issue here, the issue is the wrong user name
2/ the linux tool shows 1 local user with the last update name

So I'm guessing windows is not using the proper name to login, but doesn't provide any mean to change it.

Laptop Won't Hibernate Anymore?

May 15, 2014

I noticed a (very long) thread that is exploring issues with Windows 8.1 not sleeping properly, and while I've also had issues putting my computer to sleep, I'm more concerned right now with its inability to hibernate. I've been having my laptop hibernate most nights since I got it last year, and it's been working fine (with the occasional shut down instead of hibernation) up until a few days ago. It will not hibernate anymore. I have every power option set to 'hibernate': it's supposed to go into hibernation automatically when I close the lid, push the power button, anything. I've also set up a shortcut on my desktop that used to put it into hibernation, but now, when I go to wake it up afterwards, I've found its has shut down and closed all my apps and documents. At first I thought I was waiting too long between sessions and it automatically shut down after 12 hours for example, as I've recently come home from college and I'm going longer between wake-ups, but last night I put it into 'hibernate' and an hour later tried waking it up only to find it had had shut down again.

I've got Windows 8.1 but hibernate was working for weeks on it until recently. I've DEFINITELY got hibernate enabled in my power options, I've checked about a million times. I don't think I installed or changed anything around the time I started having these issues.

Laptop Doesn't Sleep Or Hibernate

Aug 9, 2014

I have a Dell Inspiron 17R 5737, running Windows 8.1.

my laptop does not go to sleep or hibernate. each time I close the lid, or press the power button it seems that it forcefully shut down or go to sleep/hibernate and then shuts down immediately "the shut down screen does not appear". When i start the laptop opening the lid/ pressing the button, it starts as if it were properly shut down.

I am aware of the options that I can adjust for sleep/ hibernate/ or shut down, when the lid is closed/ the power button pressed. the problem also exists when giving a "Sleep/ hibernate" order from the start menu.

I have updated the Bios " whatever that does", and several other drivers. I have tried running a "PowerCfg -energy" test on the command prompt, " several people mentioned that by using this test the found a driver that is requesting the computer to not sleep, but i found no such errors. i ran a few tests on Dell.com to check for any problems but everything seems OK.

Also, when the laptop is sitting idle for a while and it goes automatically for sleep, it does not wake up by moving mouse/ clicking on the power button, I have to shut it down by holding the power button, then press it again to turn it on.

As I remember the problem first appeared after updating the windows from 8.0 to 8.1.
