Ever since I reinstalled Windows 8.1 64-bit (Accidentally reset RAID 0 settings) I've been getting abnormal freezing on my desktop. Can't click on icons or do anything that's associated with the desktop, but I can still use my task bar and run any program just fine. After a few seconds it unfreezes, and I can use the desktop again like normal - Just happens like every 15 minutes.
I know this isn't a virus because I recently did a clean installation. I even ran Malwarebytes plus a full Kaspersky Virus Scan. Also checked my GPU / CPU Temps and they are at normal ranges. I have latest Beta Drivers (14.4) for AMD as well.

I have a dual boot, two hard-drive MSI K9A2-CF based system.
One drive has Windows 7 running with all the updates and is incredibly reliable, never stops for anything.
One drive has Windows 8.1 running and randomly locks up, mouse & keyboard non-functional, desktop and open applications still visible. Only route out is to hit the rest button, on return to operation its as if nothing ever happened, including looking in the System logs.
I suspect the chipset, as its clearly somewhat dated or the GPU driver (as AMD are flaky with their legacy hardware driver support for new OS's).
I am thinking if I uninstall the ATI/AMD driver and replace the GPU with a more recent Nvidia board with known 8.1 drivers then perhaps my problem will go away.
Note there is no hardware change at all between the Win 7 and Win 8 other than the disk that the boot happens from is different. Both hard drives are new and are not reporting any issues at all, on check disk, in SMART, anywhere.

I have a Acer 5750g Laptop with i5 core processor and 8gb of Ram
It came with Windows 7 installed and when Windows 8 came out i installed this. I have freezes random without warning. This can be once or even twice a day or even happens after 3 days at a time. So sometimes it goes a long time without a freeze.use
All of my drivers are up to date and i am sure its not a hardware fault. I use Tune Up Utilities, CC Cleaner and Mcafee and all system should be fine and it is not these programs causing a freeze as i got one before installing these!!!
When i get a freeze all i can do is to turn off and reboot!!
If i had been doing some work then this gets lost!
I have tried installing Win 8 on a fresh clean install and tried also upgrade from Win 7 but no matter have freezes on both installs.

I upgraded from Win 7 Home Premium to Win 8 Pro 2 days ago. Everything was fine, till it started freezing for no apparent reason. Yesterday it went for a couple of hours without freezing, but today the maximum time without having to restart it has been around 10 minutes. I'm writing this for the third time, because it froze in like 2 mins after restarting it.
It's getting really annoying, since I don't know what causes it. People said it's Chrome's fault, but my laptop froze a few times without Chrome being on. By freezing I mean the Cursor freezes and then disappears and my screen stays the same no matter what I do. Not even the Caps Lock light functions when I press Caps Lock, everything is dead.
I deleted old software that I wasn't using anyway, I updated my Nvidia Geforce 9400M G driver, I uninstalled my antivirus... I tried all the stuff people suggested (the ones that were having similar issues with those Preview versions) and nothing worked.
I knew it would have some issues being so new, but not like this. I literally can't use my laptop cause no matter what I'm doing it's bound to freeze and I have to press Power Button to force shut down and then start everything over again.
That's a photo of my frozen screen when I was trying to write this post for the second time. As I was editing this, my laptop froze again, after 10 minutes of being on. It only had Skype and Task Manager running.

For the last 2 weeks my Windows 8 machine freezes for a few seconds. It happened once while typing this out. Note: It is not a hardware related issue as I have installed Windows 8 Build 9364.
Sound continues to play fine during the freeze

Lately I have been having major problems with my other computer as it started to freeze constantly and keep messing up then ended up just somehow frying itself, I got a new one and it has been freezing for a few seconds at a time usually when i'm using chrome (it's happened about 6 times so far) and i'm really scared that this might be a messed up PC too.

My computer is running very slow all the time, but every 30 seconds - 10 minutes my computer freezes lots of times. I have downloaded a lot of things, and I downloaded something before and it made the computer run very slow. I just wanted to know if the download had anything to do with it.

It happens at random times and the only way to restart is to hold the power button down and force a hard reset.

A couple of weeks ago my old PSU blew up. It did kind of like a explosion sound and some flashing, very impressive. I inspected the motherboard and I could not find any damage whatsoever. Only the PSU seemed affected.
After that I bought a new PSU (Tacens MP700 - 700W), an aftermarket CPU fan (Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO) and some extra chasis fan to improve air flow and lower the temperature. I plugged everything in, and system started with no apparent issues.
However since a few days ago sometimes my PC restarts without saying anything, some other time it just freezes (very annoying) and some other times it gives me a BSOD with the errors CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT. The frequency of these failures:
- Normal use like browsing, email, programming --> not very often
- Playing game like iRacing --> sometimes it freezes
- Playing game like PES2014 --> it always freezes, sometimes during the first match, sometimes after a 2-3 of them
After googling it appears is a hardware problem so I wonder if the damn PSU damaged some of my other components. The thing is the original PSU was intended to be for a quiet HTPC but I started to work from home and suddenly became a work station. I should have improved the PSU among with the other components (CPU, memory, etc.) but I did not think it was necessary. Bad decission I guess.
I've monitored temperature and it does not seem to be the issue as using a benchmark software at 100% CPU during 30 minutes temperature does not go over 65C on the CPU (I live in Spain where ambient temperature is around 30) and motherboard never pass 68-70. Right now while browsing temp is 35 for the CPU, 45 for the mobo and graphic, 30 for HDD. Pretty normal I think.
I have also upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 hoping it was a driver issue but not success either.
Find attached the SF report. Added new crash info:

I have been having a persistent, but seemingly random problem with Windows 8 desktop mode. Periodically, all GUIs that are open on my desktop will turn completely black (blank) inside the frame and remain that way. I can still move the black windows around, minimize them, and close them, but I need to sign out and log back in to get them to look normal again. The computer does not crash and the Windows "Charms" still appear and seem to work fine. This has happened many times over a couple of weeks.
I looked in the Event Viewer when this happens and the only thing I see that might be related to the time when this occurs is this information message:
The Desktop Window Manager has exited with code (0xd00002fe)

My icons on 8.1 keep resetting randomly, causing me to have to move my icons back into the positions I like them in. I have them separated across two monitors and in various sections according to what they do.
I am not updating any drivers or doing anything out of the ordinary. Its just at some startups all of my icons are either moved all the way to the right on the right monitor, or they are just simply reset back in order on right monitors (main desktop).

When I right click the Recycle Bin and click Empty Recycle Bin, the desktop freezes: the desktop become unclickable; if I click anywhere on the desktop, it just gives me a "ding" sound.
Everything else works fine, like icons on the dock is clickable, I can go to start and open an app etc.
The way I can empty the recycle bin is open the recycle bin and empty it within the folder.

When you boot up your computer and log in to your Windows 8, you'll usually see your typical start screen full of icons, like mine.
With your wallpapers, shortcuts and everything, that's fine.
Here's my problem, it was only happening once per 10-15 log in to Windows 8, but now it's happening more frequently, when I key in my passcode and the loading begins, it changes to 'Preparing Windows...' instead of just the normal 'logging in...' or whatever, then the desktop turns blue and it literally reset everything.
Like so. Attachment 27195
There, all the icons, the shortcuts, all gone, the wallpaper change to some default ones, in fact, windows 8 itself sort of became some default state, with only internet explorer and recycling bin icons left etc. My files are still in the computer, in fact, if I log out and log back in it'll change it back to what it is before.
Is it only happening to me? Is there anything to be worried about here? Is there a solution to all this random reboots?

One day I just happened to click my desktop and BAM. All of my desktop Icons now have the text on the right side of the icon. As well as I am not able to move the icons around at all.
[URL]...
I've tried uninstalling Fences, thinking that was it. Did nothing.
I have even compared registries with a friend to see any differences. Nothing.
Nothing on the internet says anything as I have searched and searched for days with no luck.
I just want the normal Windows 8 desktop style back =[

I have used SSDs for a while now and i recently just got an i3 laptop. I immediately swapped the hdd for ssd and did a fresh install.
It was working fine but recently it started to take a little while to show the taskbar icons after i login other than that it appears to be working well. I forgot how i could trace the slow logins, its been a while since i needed too with Win 7.
The other issue is if i leave my pc for a few hrs and return 90% of the time i come back and chrome is frozen and i have to use task manager to close it and load it again. It works fine but after a hibernate session it is apparently locked and frozen.

Sometimes when I insert a blank DVD into my optical drive, Windows Explorer does not show that the disc is present in the drive. If I then double-click on the icon for the optical drive, Windows Explorer hangs. When it restarts, all I get is a completely blank desktop and a taskbar that has no icons on it. If I try and shut the computer down via Ctrl/Alt/Del and using the shutdown option there, it just stays on the shutting down screen forever and all I can do is hit the reset button. No errors are logged in Event Viewer, so I am having a hard time diagnosing the cause.
This happens maybe 50% of the time when I insert a blank disc. The other 50% of the time it works fine.
I have all the latest drivers/Windows Updates installed. I have tried 2 different burners and it happens with both of them. Do you think this could possibly be motherboard related? I bought a new board a couple of weeks ago and did a completely fresh install of Windows 8 and it's been happening since then.

Been experiencing random system freezes from time to time. One suggestion was the internal timer and was "fixed" with a simple copy paste line in the Command Prompt in Admin level. Another was a graphics card update, did that. Another talked about the browser (I use Firefox pretty much exclusively) but what was talked about didn't really pertain to me so didn't bother with that. I'm at work right now so can't post the link to the site but I did have another freeze this AM after all the fixes I tried out.
I have 3 external drives, I run an NVIDIA graphics card. It's a pretty good system with an i7 processor and 32 gigs of DDR3 RAM. Computer, when forced reset button is pushed, boots up just fine. No feedback from the system itself about drives or anything else.

So, yesterday is the first time this has happened. It has never happened before. The first time it happened yesterday, I Was watching some TV shows online, and then I got the PAGE_FAULT(...) error code.
I tried running my Anti_Malware scanner to see if that could pick something up. It crashed again just as it started.
So I tried Advanced SystemCare. Again, same problem.
And it just keeps happening.
I tried refreshing my computer to see if that would do anything, but it crashed during that too.
I ran the SF Diagnostic program and I have the .DMP files (But I can't seem to upload them. Maybe I'm trying to upload the wrong ones, I don't know.)
Anyway, these are the specs of my system. HP ENVY DV-7 7270CA (less than 8 months old) running Windows 8 (as I wasn't able to update to 8.1. I got the 0x80000004 error, or whatever it was. I can't remember exactly), 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM, Intel Core i7 3630QM, NVIDIA GT630M (2GB) GPU, and a 1TB 5400RPM HDD. Don't know what brand, I didn't check.

My first build and am having problems with windows booting extremely slow, running buggy and shutting down on me randomly. It typically shuts down during strenuous tasks such as gaming and installation, but has shut down in the UEFI bios, once. When I boot back up I almost always get to the sign in menu but after putting in my password it takes a good 3-5 minutes before the start menu pops up. Sometimes it'll load up to a black screen where I can only use the mouse pointer, and access the task manager. Wondering if it's my motherboard or if it's just a driver problem. Running an ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 with an AMD 8350 black and an Sapphire 7870 XT with two sticks of cheap 4 GB 1333 MHz ram.

Many people that have installed Windows 8 have had troubles with random freezing issues. Many users have not experienced any but there has been acorrding to Microsoft a small amount of users that have experience freezing problems, However this is a bigger problem and is a major bug that is within the clock and causes peoples computer's to lock up/ Freeze at random times etc. To get around this you have to disable Dynamic Tick.
This major bug in Windows 8 needs to be addressed by Microsoft and fixed for 8.1. I have tried the preview edition of 8.1 and was very hard to use as it kept freezing a lot. Will Dynamic Tick be disabled in the new 8.1 build?

When I leave my computer for an extended period of time, after returning the screen is sometimes blank. I know that everything is still on, the screen just won't come on. I know things are still running in the background because when I restart my computer by pressing the reset button (the only thing that works), when I boot back into Windows a few seconds later and relog into an IRC channel I was in before, my old nick gets ghosted. If my old nick was still in IRC this means my computer was still on and working fine until I hit the reset button - screen being blank was the only issue.
I've tried multiple things, such as hitting the "wake" button on the keyboard. I've checked my power settings carefully, modified them, but still no luck. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to this behavior, it either happens or it doesn't, and the time period it takes for it to happen seems random. Browser session auto-recovery.
System:
Windows 8
i5 2500K @ stock
Asus Z68 mobo
2x8GB 1600Mhz memory
256GB SSD
Radeon 7770 Sapphire 13.4 stable driver
3TB external WD HDD using wall-power
21.5" Samsung monitor 1080p
I've checked temps, nothing overheating.
Software of note:
Classic shell
KCP (WMP-HC codec pack)
Malwarebytes
Windows defender AV (built-in)

Lately, I have been experiencing freezes, I presume while browsing with Google Chrome. They happen randomly and when my computer freezes, I can still click on icons, close/open tabs on Chrome and generally move my mouse. The only issue is that my computer won't respond to any action performed. There is no blue screen associate, there are no "Program not responding" issues, just a freeze that lasts around 10-20 seconds.

So this is a problem I've had with my PC for a long time now, and just never got around to finding a solution. Half the time when I attempt to restart my computer the computer just freezes at the restart screen. So installing software generally results in a crash, I feel as though since my computer simply crashes during half the windows updates that issues are going to begin to stack up.

I'm a Windows 8. I'm trying to RDP from my new Windows 8 laptop to an XP desktop, both of which are on my home network. When I try, I get the below error...
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network
As best as I can tell, none of the conditions above is true. Here is what I have looked at so far...
- On the XP machine, in System settings / Remote, "Allow users to connect to this system" is Checked. I have successfully RDP'd to this machine in the past, but this is the first time I've tried from the Windows 8 machine.
- From the Windows 8 machine, I can ping the XP machine, and I can access a shared drive on the XP machine. In fact, I've been moving files between the XP machine and the Windows 8 machine, in both directions, all day.
- Just to eliminate another potential issue, I have set the username and password on the Windows 8 machine to match that on the XP machine.
Incidentally, XP machine is running XP Pro, 2002, SP3.
