How To Disable Taskbar From Showing On All Extra Monitors
Jul 30, 2012
Windows 8, Build 8400
Is there a way to disable the taskbar from showing on all my extra monitors? I only need it on my main screen, I do not need/want it on my other 3 screens as it takes away from the total resolution of the screen.
Hiding the task bar is not an option.

I recently converted to Windows 8(.1) from 7. When I had seven I'd play games in windowed (borderless) mode and tab out to my other monitor. It left behind a taskbar at the bottom overlaying the game I was previously on. I found this actually kinda useful. Now in Windows 8 it only shows if I tab to a program on the same monitor as the game, and not if I tab to a program on my other monitor. Is there any way to change this?

C:UsersEricDocumentsSkyDrive
It synchronizes in both locations, one at the root tree of explorer and one in the Documents folder however in this case I only want one SkyDrive folder not two. Is there a way to remove the one that exists here:

I need to be able to click on a .vnc file and have Windows 8 run
vncviewer.exe -config [that file I just clicked on] .
or literally, vncviewer.exe -config "%1" if this were windows XP
But I can only select the program to run it, and not add these extra arguments or commands as part of it.

I am using Win 8 Pro 64-bit version for the first time.
Previously I had Win 8 Pro 32-bit installed. There was an internal 250 GB SATA HDD connected as a secondary drive. No partitions. It showed me like 150 mb or so free in that.
Today I installed Win 8 64-bit. And when I connected that 250 GB drive as secondary, it showed me around 800 mb free.
My questions is- the extra free space where did it come from? is it due to 64-bit version of the OS installed now?

I use a shortcut to restart Windows 8.1 to my UEFI BIOS. The problem is it goes through various screens and selections until I finally get to the one to boot to my UEFI. I was wondering id there was a way to boot directly to my UEFI without going through extra steps? Here's what I'm using now:
C:WindowsSystem32shutdown.exe -r -o -f -t 00

I have a dual boot system with Win 7 and a Win 8.1 and all works well. I am using two SSD's with Win 8 and the other with Win 7. Asus Maximus v Gene, i5 3570k and 16 gb ram.
When I boot into Win 7 with an additional internal hdd plugged into a mob SATA port all is ok. However, when I attempt to boot into Win 8 I only get to the moving circle and won 't go any further. If I unplug the hdd the computer boots fine into Win 8.1.
The hdd is set to active and shows up ok in Disk Manager (Win 7).

After upgrading to 8.1 i see two recovery partitions: Difference between each, or how to find out if i need both.
Secondly,i have a recovery USB flash drive which has boot efi and sources, but the latter is empty. Should i redo that to copy one of the two recovery partitions? (it's 3.7 GB).
Note: i also have 4 DVDs of media recovery, and a single system image on an external hard drive. Not sure how these are related to use of the USB drive,Where is the best description of a recovery process to follow in case of losing a C:drive?

My PC is a dual boot system which had Win XP on disk1 and Win 7 on disk2.
When I installed Windows 8 several months ago, I chose to install it on disk1 and completely remove Win XP.
Everything works fine but my log-in screen now contains 4 start-up tabs instead of just 2 (see below):
Windows 8
Windows XP
Windows 7 (volume 1)
Windows 7
The only tabs which are valid are Windows 8 and Windows 7 (volume 1), the other 2 are non functional. How can I edit this screen and remove these tabs?

I recently installed a HD (WD25EZRX). it's been operating normally for about 2 days.
i was using my comp when i saw an alert that said something about a hard drive error and that my PC needed to be reset to fix it. so i reset the PC and saw another message saying something about restoring to a previous point. i wasn't really thinking and i clicked OK.
upon reset, i noticed the HD in question was now showing up as 1.36TB (it's a 2.5TB HD). it also has a bunch of files from another HD, which is odd.
i've used Error Checking under Tools of the HD's Properties, but the results showed no errors.
i'd like to regain the "lost" capacity w/o having to reformat my entire HD.
System Specs:
Win 8 Pro with Media Center
Intel Core i7-3770K CPU
Samsung 30nm DDR3 1600 RAM 16GB
ASROCK Extreme4 Z77 Motherboard
ATI Radeon HD4650
Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD (OS)

I am trying to run 2 monitors in Win 8 and whilst it recognizes them, whenever I try and move say Chrome onto one then watch a video on the other it just closes Chrome then plays the video! And as you can't resize windows at all (that I can work out!) I can only do 1 thing at a time which is useless.

Currently, I run Windows 7 Pro on dual 24" monitors, and life is good.
In Win 8, if I open the desktop tile, I presume that the default action is to open the full-screen desktop app on just 1 of the 2 monitors. I'm guessing that the "Start" screen remains on the 2nd monitor.
Can I have the desktop app open, full screen, across both monitors? Can I have icons for my so-called legacy programs littered across both monitors like I have them on the Win 7 desktop? Just to clarify, I am NOT asking about having the background wallpaper extend across both monitors. I want the actual desktop application to extend across both monitors.

I have two monitors. Some of my programs can take the whole screen, covering up everything including the task bar. In W7, I just used the MS clock gadget which I moved to the second screen so I could always see the time. Now in Windows 8.1 Update, I can see all the apps that I've pined to the active task bar, but I don't see the system tray with the time to the right. Doesn't have to be the task bar, of course -- could be a floating clock in the upper right or left or anywhere you like.

Is there a way to change the default lock screen settings so that it displays on all monitors? For example, I have a triple monitor setup. When I hit Win + L, the lock screen only shows on the middle screen... I'd love for it to show on all three screens if possible.

I just learned! You can hold down the <Windows> key and press <page up> or <page down> to switch the Start screen to another monitor in a multimonitor setup.
So there are 3 ways to move the Start screen:
1) click in the bottom left corner of the desired monitor to have the start screen there
2) use <Windows> + <Page Up> or <Windows> + <Page Down> to cycle the start screen through the monitors
3) grab the top edge of any Windows Store/Metro app and move the app to another monitor. That will automatically move the Start screen to that monitor as the Windows Store app must be on the same monitor as the Start screen.

When moving my cursor between my two monitors, it stops at the border. To get to the other screen I either have to keep moving my mouse towards the border or move the cursor at high speed between the two. The issue occurs no matter where I cross, and does not appear to be related to the metro charms or multitasking.
My desktop just recently installed the Windows 8.1 Update (Pro 64-bit), and since then I have had this problem off and on. I do not know what causes it to happen. I have two monitors, side by side. A 1050x1680 monitor on the left, with a 1920x1080 monitor on the right. The top edges of these monitors are aligned.
This phenomenon is incredibly annoying, so any methods of stopping. I'd also be interested to know how and why this happens.

I've been looking at some of the MATROX graphic cards for multi-monitor output -- up to 8 possible !!
Now any decent software to run these -- the standard software seems OK at running TWO monitors but I want to be able to run several more. You can run more but it gets a bit complicated managing this from within the standard windows system itself.

My System : I have two machines that share two monitors by the use of two KVMs. They both use Nviria GeForce vraphics cards (with twin DVI outputs).
One machine is Win 7 Pro X64 and the other is Win 8 Pro X64. Both have the latest Nvidia drivers. Both are full retail legal versions of the OS.
My Problem : When I switch between machines I usually lose one screen and it cannot be reactivated without a reboot. Sometimes the other screen reverts to its default resolution. This happens on every switch over with Win 8 and sometimes with Win 7 but not always.
I have discoverd that if I switch the 2nd screen forst and then the main KVM (which has the keyboard and mouse) then usually the Win 7 machine continues to see both screens. The Win 8 machine virtually always loses the primary screen (the mouse and keyboard attached to this KVM are unaffected and switch correctly always)
I suspect this might be an nvidia problem but short og buying a new graphics card I have no way of determining this.

I have a brand-new HDCP supporting monitor (native resolution 1920 x 1080,) on which I play the latest blu ray movies from the computers built-in blu ray drive, and a 9 year old flat screen non-HD plasma TV (on which I watch You Tube, BBC iPlayer and 4OD, streamed from the PC via a VGA cable,) both connected to my GT610 NVidia graphics card.
It seems I can only get them at the same resolution. My desktop does however have it's own on board graphics processor. Is it possible to run these two devices at different resolutions? (Since the ancient flat screen can only handle resolutions up to 1600 x 1200.)

ASUS P8 Z77-V LK mobo has 1 each VGA, HDMI, DVI-D & Display
At first I was not confused thinking I could use VGA or DVI for my monitor and HDMI or VGA for my TV
Then I started reading about 'Display Port' and confusion set in.
1. -> Can I just use HDMI & DVI off the board at the same time to use 2 monitors ?
2. -> or Do I have to use an adapter and 'Display Port' for the 2nd monitor ?

Background: Yesterday, I upgraded my graphics card and updated from 8 to 8.1, so there is the possibility that this is not an 8.1 issue.
I have 3 monitors running at 1920x1080. Two are computer monitors and one is an hdtv. With Windows 8, the experience on each monitor was identical.
The Problem: With 8.1, one monitor (the hdtv) is scaling things funny. At first it was like all applications (desktop and metro apps) were magnified on the screen. As I dragged an item from screen to screen, I could literally see it magnify once most of it was on the hdtv screen. Icon size, however, remained consistent across displays. After enabling the "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays" options, desktop apps stopped magnifying.
Nevertheless, the metro UI keeps scaling up unnecessarily on the hdtv. In the pics below the left monitor is the hdtv.
I almost exclusively use the hdtv for metro apps, but at this size, it's horribly inefficient.
