Three Monitors Connected - Metro Interface Lockup?
Nov 4, 2012
I have three monitors connected up, sometimes when i open the metro screen via the windows key, it just freezes, i'm unable to close it or do anything with it, pressing the windows button does nothing either. I can still work on the other two screens however.S earching then clicking on files ALWAYS freezes it, to fix it i have to log out then back in or restart explorer.exe, why is this happening?

My previous machines where XP and Win7. Win 8 was forced upon me buying my current Rig. It's Metro Interfacelooks like a Giant Mobile Phone! I installed Classic Start Menu. It however gets flooded over by a giant Metro Screen, (when it decides It needs something), and there is no official way out, apart from closing down the Application via Task manager. Writing a program with no way out was in my days classed as anti social program behaviour. Why does MS elevate this to desired behaviour in Win8? I would like to see this crap interface purged from my machine. If that's not possible, I'll install Win7. What, after all, was wrong with the Interface that served us well from NT via Win95/98 via Win XP,Vista, tru Win7. Metro is frankly a Pile of rotten Horse Shit! It requires re-training of all staff who were previously accomplished for up to Win7.

I find the fonts on my metro start screen aren't as crisp as I remember them being in previous versions of windows. I also can't seem to find a way to increase the font size in the Metro Mail app.

I've installed StartMenuReviver which I find an excellent program. I've noticed that when I use the standard power off feature of the Metro interface that power is still present on (my) USB ports as witnessed by USB speakers still on and USB mouse still glowing (multi-coloured lighting inbuilt)
IF I use the power off feature of the StartmenuReviver app then I truly power off; speaker on light goes off as does the lighting feature of the mouse.
Obviously a complete shutdown is preferable so I turn off using the StartMenuReviver app. Is their a reason the Metro app doesn't fully shut down PC ??

I installed Windows 8 in another partition just to learn it and do the move later. I got no big issues but...The next day I noticed I have no mouse pointer in the "metro" interface. If I am in the desktop the pointer shows OK.
I looked carefully at boot/turn off stages and at the beginning the mouse pointer is there but suddenly disappears. The same is when power off. Suddenly appears just before the final stages of the turn off procedure.
I can see the visual signals (mouse over) and click in apps but no pointer at all.

Background: Yesterday, I upgraded my graphics card and updated from 8 to 8.1, so there is the possibility that this is not an 8.1 issue.
I have 3 monitors running at 1920x1080. Two are computer monitors and one is an hdtv. With Windows 8, the experience on each monitor was identical.
The Problem: With 8.1, one monitor (the hdtv) is scaling things funny. At first it was like all applications (desktop and metro apps) were magnified on the screen. As I dragged an item from screen to screen, I could literally see it magnify once most of it was on the hdtv screen. Icon size, however, remained consistent across displays. After enabling the "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays" options, desktop apps stopped magnifying.
Nevertheless, the metro UI keeps scaling up unnecessarily on the hdtv. In the pics below the left monitor is the hdtv.
I almost exclusively use the hdtv for metro apps, but at this size, it's horribly inefficient.

My Windows 8 became laggy ever since I restarted my PC yesterday, March 28, around 5pm it was the first time I restarted my PC since Sunday, March 23. I have been looking for some solutions on Google and tried them but it didn't solved my problem.
I also haven't installed anything since March 24 and it was just Hearthstone (a game). The solutions I tried were scanning my PC using Windows Defender and ComboFix, both AV have not found issues. I also tried killing processes like sqlservr.exe, googledrivesync.exe and ReportingServicesService.exe but it didn't solve my problem also. Also, I did a System Restore which I thought would solve my problem, but didn't.
I also noticed earlier that whenever I boot in to the desktop of the OS, the UI will not lag but after a couple of minutes it will start to. It is very noticeable because the animations are slow like the animation of the sidebar when you put the cursor on the top-right or bottom-right of the screen, the animation on the Start menu and the animation of popping up of windows.

I've got this problem with my new laptop, where if I do something with the touchpad (I'm not sure what the exact movement is, but it keeps happening when I'm trying to select things), Windows 8 will jump into the new interface screen.
Is there any way to turn this function off? I've got a button on the keyboard to switch to the interface, so I don't need this particular touchpad function, and it's more of a hindrance than a support.

Windows 8 shutdown process and user interface is stupid. It looks like it was designed by someone that belongs in a mental facility in a padded room. I have to logoff first then click on the screen and then click turn off computer. Start button is hidden and have a stupid different screen to bring me to. The only good thing I see with Windows 8 is it boots faster than previous Windows releases. Is there a way to make it work like previous Windows releases without spending more money?

I am trying to run 2 monitors in Win 8 and whilst it recognizes them, whenever I try and move say Chrome onto one then watch a video on the other it just closes Chrome then plays the video! And as you can't resize windows at all (that I can work out!) I can only do 1 thing at a time which is useless.

I was trying to use Windows Explorer to wirelessly browse my Android folders with the ES File Explorer app. The app issued me the local ftp IP and port to connect. I also setup a username and password for the connection.
When I entered those credentials on Vista, Win Explorer displayed folders as usual and allowed the usual drag and drop and cut/paste features. However, with Win 8.1 the interface looks like an HTML web page where all my Android folders display as links, and files and folders can only be downloaded. Is there some configuration setting I'm missing to make it look the old way?

I think I'm fighting a network permissions problem, but I'm stuck.
I have reliable connections to my DSL modem and to the internet. I would like to enable/disable my network interface, in this case the ethernet connection to my DSL modem, (not the DSL modem connection to the phone line).
After cruising through the Control Panel/Network and Sharing/Change Adapter Settings/ menus, I made a desktop shortcut to my Ethernet device. Right clicking on the shortcut shows a context menu with "Disable". This option works fine and cancels the connection to the modem. After that, the shortcut context menu remains the same: no option for "Enable" is shown.
However, if I follow "Open file location" to the control panel's Network screen, the context menu for the target icon DOES contain "enable". More strange: after clicking on main Network context menu, now the desktop shortcut displays "Enable". Sometimes nothing "enables" until I run the "Diagnose" option several times with administrative priv. (I am the administrator).

Basically the taskbar just freezes, however when you click on the buttons they still work, it spreads until the whole interface no longer works, things like windows media center and games lock up and forced to reboot. Nothing using up the cpu in task manager etc and I can't see anything in event viewer (although not 100% sure where i'd look)
It happens completely randomly, cant seem to replicate it and im doing different things each times it happens!

Currently, I run Windows 7 Pro on dual 24" monitors, and life is good.
In Win 8, if I open the desktop tile, I presume that the default action is to open the full-screen desktop app on just 1 of the 2 monitors. I'm guessing that the "Start" screen remains on the 2nd monitor.
Can I have the desktop app open, full screen, across both monitors? Can I have icons for my so-called legacy programs littered across both monitors like I have them on the Win 7 desktop? Just to clarify, I am NOT asking about having the background wallpaper extend across both monitors. I want the actual desktop application to extend across both monitors.

I have two monitors. Some of my programs can take the whole screen, covering up everything including the task bar. In W7, I just used the MS clock gadget which I moved to the second screen so I could always see the time. Now in Windows 8.1 Update, I can see all the apps that I've pined to the active task bar, but I don't see the system tray with the time to the right. Doesn't have to be the task bar, of course -- could be a floating clock in the upper right or left or anywhere you like.

Is there a way to change the default lock screen settings so that it displays on all monitors? For example, I have a triple monitor setup. When I hit Win + L, the lock screen only shows on the middle screen... I'd love for it to show on all three screens if possible.

I just learned! You can hold down the <Windows> key and press <page up> or <page down> to switch the Start screen to another monitor in a multimonitor setup.
So there are 3 ways to move the Start screen:
1) click in the bottom left corner of the desired monitor to have the start screen there
2) use <Windows> + <Page Up> or <Windows> + <Page Down> to cycle the start screen through the monitors
3) grab the top edge of any Windows Store/Metro app and move the app to another monitor. That will automatically move the Start screen to that monitor as the Windows Store app must be on the same monitor as the Start screen.

I downloaded the hebrew language pack for my version of office, but it won't install. It says I am running the "preview" version of office, and I can't install a language pack on it. True that I once had that version, but now, I am running an activated professional plus with all updates.
I then tried downloading a full installation file for hebrew office 2013, and choosing the "repair" option instead of "install". It "repaired" everything, but I still don't have an option for hebrew interface in the language tools.
Is there a way to manually install the language interface files I need?

Is there a way to disable the taskbar from showing on all my extra monitors? I only need it on my main screen, I do not need/want it on my other 3 screens as it takes away from the total resolution of the screen.
Hiding the task bar is not an option.

When moving my cursor between my two monitors, it stops at the border. To get to the other screen I either have to keep moving my mouse towards the border or move the cursor at high speed between the two. The issue occurs no matter where I cross, and does not appear to be related to the metro charms or multitasking.
My desktop just recently installed the Windows 8.1 Update (Pro 64-bit), and since then I have had this problem off and on. I do not know what causes it to happen. I have two monitors, side by side. A 1050x1680 monitor on the left, with a 1920x1080 monitor on the right. The top edges of these monitors are aligned.
This phenomenon is incredibly annoying, so any methods of stopping. I'd also be interested to know how and why this happens.

I've been looking at some of the MATROX graphic cards for multi-monitor output -- up to 8 possible !!
Now any decent software to run these -- the standard software seems OK at running TWO monitors but I want to be able to run several more. You can run more but it gets a bit complicated managing this from within the standard windows system itself.

My System : I have two machines that share two monitors by the use of two KVMs. They both use Nviria GeForce vraphics cards (with twin DVI outputs).
One machine is Win 7 Pro X64 and the other is Win 8 Pro X64. Both have the latest Nvidia drivers. Both are full retail legal versions of the OS.
My Problem : When I switch between machines I usually lose one screen and it cannot be reactivated without a reboot. Sometimes the other screen reverts to its default resolution. This happens on every switch over with Win 8 and sometimes with Win 7 but not always.
I have discoverd that if I switch the 2nd screen forst and then the main KVM (which has the keyboard and mouse) then usually the Win 7 machine continues to see both screens. The Win 8 machine virtually always loses the primary screen (the mouse and keyboard attached to this KVM are unaffected and switch correctly always)
I suspect this might be an nvidia problem but short og buying a new graphics card I have no way of determining this.
