How To Add Windows 7 Pro On 256GB SSD With Win8

Jan 18, 2014

I shrunk the SSD down leaving about 100 GB for Win 8.1 and formatted the remaining space creating an NTFS partition for the Windows 7 (DVD) install. I disabled quick boot and changed the boot order so the optical drive is first. When I attempt to boot from the disk, it freezes before i get to the screen to choose which partition to install to.

So i then changed the bios from UEFI to CSM, and now i make it as far as the screen to choose the partition, but it won't let me install on the newly created SSD partition, with the message: "windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style", greying out the install button when trying to select this partition. However, when I select one of the 1.5 TB HD's, the install button becomes active. But I really want to install Windows 7 on the SSD.

My machine is a Toshiba Qosmio X70 with 32GB ram, two 1.5 TB HD's and a 256 GB SSD

New Laptop With 256GB SSD - Showing Only 170GB Free?

Jan 19, 2014

I've just been playing around with my Sony Vaio Flip with a 256GB SSD and noticed a lot of space was missing. It is my understanding that Windows 8 & 8.1 uses space for recovery files and upgrade files. I guess my concern is whether the space I'm seeing is actually normal or not.

Upon viewing File Explorer, I show my C: drive to have 170GB out of 204GB free (available) for space. This is after I remove MOST (about 90%) of the bloatware that Sony came with. I also have Indexing and System Restore disabled/turned off. What happened to my ~34GB of space?

I then checked Disk Management and realized I had recovery partitions (see attached picture). My questions are as follows:

1) While the Disk Management adds up to 238GB of space, I am curious whether having 5 Partitions is normal with 2 of them being 31.59GB and 1.44GB. Is this common? If so, what are they? Should I or can I even remove them if I do not plan on using System Restore or restoring my laptop back to its original state?

2) With 34GB of space used for partitions, I have another ~34GB space gone as well. Remember that I only had about 170GB FREE space to use after uninstalling unnecessary programs and disabling System Restore and such. I haven't messed around with any other settings (I've heard things like PageFile, Hibernation, SuperFetch, etc. can take up lots of space). How can I check WHAT is exactly taking up another 34GB of usable space and to determine if I can GAIN that space back (by deleting or uninstalling other files/features?) Is the Windows 9 install THAT big?

3) I also want to add that I did upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 on the 1st day I got my laptop. Would this only add to the problem of disappearing ANOTHER 34GB of space?

All in all, I've lost 68GB total space it seems.

Win8 Pro - Windows Has Wmc BUT Is Not Activated

Oct 1, 2013

my laptop came with win8 core edition. Anyways, i updraged to pro version using add features to windows and activated it. DONE

everything was fine untill for some stupid reason i remembered that i have a wmc key (the one microsoft gave for free for some time). So i searched my email and found the key. I was not expecting it to work as the time period to install the free key was over.

Anyways, i decided to try it out. I enter the key in add features and i am surprised to see that it says the key is valid. so i clicked next. It installed fine and when it rebooted i was even greeted with a screen saying everything worked fine. Then i notice windows is not activated. I go to activation and it returns the error saying the key is blocked.

Now my windows has wmc BUT is not activated. I can not use my win8 pro key since it does not have wmc. I searched online and it seems that the only way to go back is to reinstall win8

Is there any way to remove wmc? Or any other way i can activate my windows using my pro product key?

I dont understand if the key was blocked why did it say that the key works :

Setup Installation :: Win8 Can't See Second HD

Feb 1, 2013

My system:
Brand new Asus CM6870 desktop
2 TB HD
16 GB RAM
Win 8 Core (originally installed by Asus)
Motherboard; Asus P8H77-M Pro (AMI BIOS 0606)
Asus did not supply and will not supply original Win 8 media

I also purchased an OCZ SSD with the intention of moving Win 8 to the SSD. The exisiting HD is installed as a UEFI device and I wanted to install Win 8 on the SSD as an UEFI device too.

I installed the SSD on port 1 of the SATA III (AHCI). In every win install attempt I had the HD disconnected. When reconnected, it was on SATA III port 2 (AHCI).

After MANY, MANY attempts, I have Win 8 installed on the SSD and the original Windows 8 remains on the HD. I was unable to to a UEFI install, so I gave up and did an MBR traditional install. When I boot to the SSD, Windows works but I can't see the HD. When I boot to the HD, Windows works but I can't see the SSD.

To make a VERY long saga, less long, I attempted the following.....- created a recovery drive to use to do a clean install on the SSD - didn't work
- "found" original Win 8 Core media and used it to install on the SSD. (It worked but it was a MBR install. I tried this many times using both a DVD and a UEFI formatted USB drive using instructions found on this forum)
Up to this point, any time that Win 8 was installed on the SSD, I could see the HD as a secondary drive. If I booted to the HD, I could see the SSD as a secondary drive.- I then tried to clone the system using Paragaon - it couldn't see the SSD
- I then tried to clone the system using Mini Tool Partition Wizard (as recommended by OCZ) - it proceeded but failed and I got the "Starting Automatic Repair" message that froze the system. After unplugging the SSD, it booted to the HD.
- Based on posts here and other forums, I read that you could use the Windows 8 Pro upgrade to do a clean install. I bought it and upgraded my HD.
- The upgrade would not install on the SSD. It would only upgrade so I re-installed Win 8 Core on the SSD and then upgraded to Pro. (I had to add a PID.txt file with my upgrade licence to the upgrade disk.) After I did this, I could no longer see the secondary drive regardless of whether I booted to the HD or the SSD.- Then I re-installed Win 8 Core on the SSD to see if the Pro upgrade was the issue. - no change I looked in Device Manager and I don't see any errors but I don't see the secondary drive.

I'll attach jpgs of the Device Manager from both the SSD and the HD Win installation"

The SSD appears as unallocated on the HD Disk Manager even though Win 8 is working on that drive! The HD does not appear on the SSD Disk Manager.

I've worked on so many alternatives over the past week that I feel like I'm going around in circles.

I'll settle for a Win 8 MBR installation on the SSD with access to the secondard HD.

Can't Find Second Drive In Win8

Dec 13, 2013

I just bought a new computer with W8 installed. This is a big step from XP that I've been running for quite a while. I had two drives (both 500Gb) in the old box, and I'd like to use them in the new. When I try the old drive with boot tracks as an internal - the new box has three spaces for HDD internally - the computer won't even boot. Once I remove the drive everything is back to normal. I have a USB3 external drive case that I installed the same drive in, and, although W8 recognizes I have a USB3 device connected, it's as if there's nothing inside. I've tried doing what I'm told in Devices and Printers (right-click, etc.) but still nothing. The one thing I do see is "Drive E:" in a shaded box to the right of the description, but I can't click on it. Since the drive has five drive assignments (C: through G, I would think whatever happens those assignments would show up in a description of the drive. I don't get anything. I would think as long as I don't try to boot from the old drive (via boot from external, etc) the boot tracks on the drive would not have any meaning - right?

I would like to be able to use some of the software I've downloaded in the past and installed on the XP computer. That's the main reason for trying to use the drive. All the software I downloaded is located in one of the virtual drives (G, and I want to copy off those that are of value to me now.

DxTreme380 Media Box Won't Connect To WIN8.1 Pc

Feb 12, 2014

Have recently upgraded a pc to WIN 8.1 Pro 64 bit from WIN 7 64 bit.

Before the upgrade I had a DxTreme 380 media box located in the lounge room and networked via Cat6 cable to the pc in the bedroom.

All devices on the network - Samsung tv, DxTreme box + 4 PC's have static IP addresses.

The DxTreme was loging in to the PC (WIN7) for about 2 years without any problems.

After the upgrade of the PC to WIN 8.1 Pro It refuses to login no matter what I do.

I've even created a new user account with Admin level rights and this failed as well.

I have a deep suspicion that there must/is some security features buried deeply in the OS that is preventing the DxTreme form connection to the PC.

I've spent about 2 months trying to fix this without any sucess.

(I'm at the point of building another PC with WIN 7 just to connect to the DxTreme box, but this could be an expensive fix for something simple)

WIN8.1 Not Seeing Files Written In WIN7

Jul 10, 2014

Win7 installed on SSD for 1 year now. 2 more HDD: one 2TB (name K: ) one 4TB (name T: )

About 3 weeks ago tried WN8.1 on a third HDD (1TB). After install all looked OK. Boot on WIN7 and windows tried to check disk. I let it and all looked OK. Worked normally in WIN7 and add 300GB+ of MXF files (video recorded with my camera) and 100GB+ on NEF.

After a week (approximate) boot again in Windows 8.1 . Moved from another 1TB HDD (name J: ) 55GB date on partition T (4TB HDD) and downloaded from camera 6GB MXF on partition K. On this moment I realized that on K I don't see recent MXF wrote on WIN7 after last Windows 8.1 boot.

Boot again in WIN7 and let it do Check Disk. No result: in WIN7 a see only what I see in Windows 8.1. Check Disk made an FOUND.000 on K but no files. On T I had back-up all K but some back-up was not complete after writing 55GB on it in Windows 8.1.

Now I'm scanning with recovery programs but on T I thing all is lost because of those 55GB wrote. On partition K a don't see hundred of GB (1.14TB see windows as properties of files but only 150GB free on partition so ther ar some files that ar not see by WIN7 or Windows 8.1). On T partition no unseen files (total partition space - free space = total file properties).

For testing I tried on another 1TB HDD: partition created in WIN7 and write file on it, boot Windows 8.1 and see all files, boot again WIN7 and write another files, boot Windows 8.1 and second write files are not seen.

Now I bought new 4TB HDD for scaning partition K and saving all files from it on new HDD. At this moment I have aprox. 100GB of NEF and MXF on partition K that was overwrite in back-up on partition T and for the moment is lost. Didn't work dual boot with WIN7 and Windows 8.1

SkyDrive Under Win8.1 RTM - File Cannot Be Uploaded

Oct 11, 2013

I've been doing some testing moving around files to and from a test folder on SkyDrive under Win8.1 rtm and seem to got myself into a position where the SkyDrive client thinks a file should be synced from the local machine but fails as it "has a problem"

Metro SkyDrive shows an error "Files can't be uploaded because there's a problem with a file or folder" - View Details/Close

Clicking View Details displays "Problem" the folder/file in error and that's it. No option to ignore/delete or anything.

I've tried totally deleting the folders from the root of SkyDrive to no avail.

Windows Explorer shows the skydrive folder with an explanation mark - right clicking and selecting "View Problem" goes to the Metro Skydrive page detailing the file as above.

Dell :: How To Reset Win8 Password

Mar 15, 2013

I bought a new Inspiron with Win 8 a couple days ago. I was setting it up today and put in a my user name and password. I tried connecting to a network share and it wasn't working. I realized that I had my Windows user name spelled wrong. I went and changed the name then tried again and it still wouldn't work. I rebooted to see if it would work. When I got to the login screen the corrected name was there but it would not accept my password. I thought maybe I'd not entered the password I thought I did and tried several variations and could not get it to work.

I did not create a password recovery disk. I did not burn the Dell system recovery disks. I literally set up Windows for the first time, tried connecting to network shares, rebooted and now cannot get into the computer.  I am stumped. I cannot seem to find the way to get to the Windows recovery after rebooting. I read about how I could get to safe mode from there but I can't find it. I reboot, hit shift+F8 and can get into some Dell hardware diagnostics utility and if I exit I can hit F12 and get some boot options none of which seem to do me any good.

I have no problem with reinstalling Windows but I don't have a recovery disk. I'm about this close to returning it to the store. What do I do?

Furthermore, when I search for an app and click the "install" button for that perticular app, the Store crashes; closing down immediately.

I already ran sfc /scannow but no problems found. I also ran the wsreset.exe but also to no avail.
I tried switching to my MS account, same issue. So am now back on a local account.

It has to do something with the account or a policy that is active on my account I assume ?

Transfer Lotus 8.5 From Win7 To Win8 Computer?

Jan 1, 2014

I have a Windows 7 computer with Lotus 8.5 on it and I need to transfer Lotus 8.5 and all it's files and emails and the encryption key to the Windows 8 computer. I do not think that Windows 8 will recognize Lotus 8.5 so I had the idea to partition the Windows 8 computer and install Windows 7 on one of the partitions thus making it a dual boot computer, then install Lotus 8.5 to the Windows 7 partition. My problem is Windows 8 is already installed on the computer and Windows website warns not to install the older operating system second.

Windows website warns, "You must install the older operating system first, and then install the more recent operating system. If you don't (for example, if you install Windows Vista on a computer already running Windows 7), you can render your system inoperable. This can happen because earlier versions of Windows don't recognize the startup files used in more recent versions of Windows and can overwrite them." What should I do? I have found some information on installing Windows 7 as a second operating system on a Windows 8 computer thus creating a Dual Boot computer and giving you the best of both worlds and full app compatibility as some of your Windows 7 applications may not be supported in a Windows 8 environment.
