Virtualization :: Sharing Files Between Win8 Host And XP Guest?
Jul 7, 2013
As I am having problems with USB and getting my workfiles onto my guest machine I thought I could load them onto my host then access them via file sharing. I have set up the VMware player with the location of a shared directory on the host but I cannot see that on my guest XP desktop. The steps I need to do to get this working. So far I am having no end of problems getting this new laptop to work with my old software. Using Windows 8 Pro 64 bit on host and Windows XP Pro

I have done installation of windows xp sp3 on a guest virtual machine and i have problem with networking. On my host machine (windows 8.1 ) i have 1 static ip and i can't have anotherone. So from this ip i have to share network to guest machine. The guest machine tries to get ip from dhcp but it can't. When i give it manual ip address (the ip from host computer) it works ok but i have to turn off host's network card because they cant have tha same ip address.

I'm at the point of no return with Hyper V. I have finally gotten access to the Internet. For the next step, where I can find Step-by-Step instructions to gain access to a Host Hard Drive from the VM. I have the MS Windows 8 Inside Out and it is of no luck. For some reason accessing a Hard Drive wasn't important.

If say I have a Windows Guest running its own AV software whether it's Windows defender or anything else then it seems to me that by having the HOST also running an AV software we are going to have two pieces of AV software running on the same data areas (the VM Disks).
It would seem to make sense to exclude the VM directories from the HOST's AV scan when the VM's are running -- but I haven't seen any mechanism to dynamically turn off parts of the AV system -- it's either an ALL or NONE mechanism.
I'm sure the performance of both HOST and GUESTS could be enhanced if AV software was ONLY running on the machines it needed to be - but AV software doesn't seem to allow for excluding certain parts of the machines.
If I have up and running say 4 VM's - that's my normal usage - then on the Virtual Machine directory on the Host I could have 5 (yes FIVE) AV pieces of software scanning / protecting it (The VM directories / data areas) at all times -- The VM's of course need to be individually protected if they are on the Net.

In Windows 8.1 Pro as host, with vmware player 6.02, Ubuntu 12 or 14, server or desktop guest:
Network adapter set to Bridge. The guest OS installs just fine. Guest gets an IPv4 address from DHCP server on the same subnet as the host. Guest can connect to the Internet for downloads. Host connects to the Internet. Yet a ping from host to guest or guest to host results in destination unreachable. Occurs even if NIS "smart firewall" is turned off.
I've used essentially the same setup with a Win7 host with no issues. Any clues why the two won't talk to one another?
[fwiw, I bounced off Hyper-V when I saw how sluggish it was compared to vmware player.

As my machine doesn't support SLAT in HyperV I am using VMlite XP mode to run some 16 bit programs I need. Very occaisionally VMlite hangs on close after it has saved state or shutdown the guest machine.
I go to task manager and click end task on the Workstation GUI and it closes but very occaisionally end task wont closed the program. Sign off wont close the program either and restarting hangs at the blue screen 'restarting' I have to push the reset button on the tower to get the machine to restart.
Is there any hidden way of closing VMlite so I dont have to restart, a sort of hard end task?

Win7 installed on SSD for 1 year now. 2 more HDD: one 2TB (name K: ) one 4TB (name T: )
About 3 weeks ago tried WN8.1 on a third HDD (1TB). After install all looked OK. Boot on WIN7 and windows tried to check disk. I let it and all looked OK. Worked normally in WIN7 and add 300GB+ of MXF files (video recorded with my camera) and 100GB+ on NEF.
After a week (approximate) boot again in Windows 8.1 . Moved from another 1TB HDD (name J: ) 55GB date on partition T (4TB HDD) and downloaded from camera 6GB MXF on partition K. On this moment I realized that on K I don't see recent MXF wrote on WIN7 after last Windows 8.1 boot.
Boot again in WIN7 and let it do Check Disk. No result: in WIN7 a see only what I see in Windows 8.1. Check Disk made an FOUND.000 on K but no files. On T I had back-up all K but some back-up was not complete after writing 55GB on it in Windows 8.1.
Now I'm scanning with recovery programs but on T I thing all is lost because of those 55GB wrote. On partition K a don't see hundred of GB (1.14TB see windows as properties of files but only 150GB free on partition so ther ar some files that ar not see by WIN7 or Windows 8.1). On T partition no unseen files (total partition space - free space = total file properties).
For testing I tried on another 1TB HDD: partition created in WIN7 and write file on it, boot Windows 8.1 and see all files, boot again WIN7 and write another files, boot Windows 8.1 and second write files are not seen.
Now I bought new 4TB HDD for scaning partition K and saving all files from it on new HDD. At this moment I have aprox. 100GB of NEF and MXF on partition K that was overwrite in back-up on partition T and for the moment is lost. Didn't work dual boot with WIN7 and Windows 8.1

installing apps on my laptop running window 8.1. I select install the app I want. The store downloads it and "installs" it. The files are hidden in the program files however in the start menu the app icon is just a box. When i click on it, it says that there is a problem and it cannot be opened. the store would repair the install. I have tried that but no luck. No apps seems to be working that I download and i cant delete them because there is no such option in the start menu. And then manually deleting the files is also impossible because windows blocks it even when i have admin rights.

I am dual booting Windows 8 and Win7, using one 500gb hard drive. Win7 has been my main OS, so all of my music, photos, etc. are stored there.
How can I access the user data from my Win7 install , from my Windows 8 install?
Everytime I try to go to it from Windows 8 ---- > My computer it says that I don't have permission to access the files for that user, then attempts to do so for some random period of time, and in the end nothing happens.

I have a virtualbox running on my Ubuntu Server 13.10. My goal is to run virtual machines on HDD, while every other stuff is running on SSD. Because the CD/DVD drive wont work on the server, I had to install Windows 8.1 in Virtualbox on my own computer. After successful installation, I transferred the .vhd file to the server (HDD) and created a new virtual machine from Ubuntu Server / php Virtualbox using the .vhd file I just transferred.
But now the Windows 8.1 running on the server's HDD complains that it is not activated. I tried to activate it using the key card from the box, but it says that the code is not valid.
Yes, the first time I installed Windows 8.1 on Virtualbox on my own computer, I entered the activation code successfully. So I can't make copies from activated .vhd files?

I had a similar issue when adding vista pro and W7 pro to a domain. I found I had to turn the UAC setting all the way off to have the VPN connections appear once the machine was connected to a domain.
Fast forward to Windows 8. Once the machine was connected to the domain can't see created VPN connections even after turning the UAC all the way off. I assume it is a GPO item I can change but I can't find any reference to what GPO or registry setting I should change to allow use of the VPN connections.
What I can change?

I got an Inspiron 15R and upgraded to Windows 8.1 and I noticed that the bluetooth driver for my Jam Classic wasn't working. I looked for hours and I found a post detailing another substitute driver and I decided to install it (Qualcomm Antheros). It worked for a bit but then it decided to crap out on me after I rebooted my system. So I uninstalled the driver and apparently it took the internet with it because my laptop can't find any wireless networks now and what's worse is that I've been using my Microsoft Account to login and I don't have any other accounts on the start screen to login with. I basically can't do anything.

As mentioned I have a USB network dongle that I use as a second network card. On my stationary pc it installed the driver automatically when plugged into the USB-port and it works perfectly. When I plug it into my laptop it also installs the driver automatically but.. the driver doesn't work and I have an exclamation mark saying the driver isn't working properly. I have tried reinstalling the driver countless times - no luck.
Both machines run the same version of Windows 8. What can I do?
EDIT: It's a Bluetooth device.

Lately, I have been experiencing a slowdown on my computer. As any other person would do, I opened Task Manager and saw that a process called WMI Provider Host took 20-30%, of CPU. I tried to end the task but it continued to open up. I went into my anti-virus software and found nothing wrong. I looked into my Event Manager and got back to a .dll opening the script making WMI Provider Host open. the .dll is called cimwin.dll. That opens it and other Activity Transfers open it.

Since I installed 8.1, my machine is running hot, 45c, but when I shut down one of the many Service Host:Local Service(s), it drops back down to 20c, where it was always with 8.
I can manually shut it down each time.... but I's like to block it from starting in the first place. Shutting down seems to have no other effect other than dropping the temp.
I need to find a fix.... or go back to 8.

I accidentally set "Windows Presentation Foundation Host" to default open in Google Chrome, I don't know why I did. I was experimenting, I guess. I don't know how to fix it.
Windows Presentation Foundation Host is an XAML file. I don't know a whole lot about how computers and their files work, but I know a little like how to navigate with task manager, file explorer, control panel, etc.

I am having trouble with my computer. A message pops up that Catalyst control center: host application has stopped working. And my PC will inform me when it is working. So I try to restart but it says that the host application is preventing the computer from restarting even though I know that it is not turned on. The problem is that it slows down my computer and even after I think I have solved it it goes back to not working.
The problem has caused me to not being able to use the internet. Also on occasion, when attempting to restart or shut down it took longer than 10 hours (I did not wait for it to complete I then manually shut it down). I have tried resetting it to a date where my computer functioned fine several times but it only solves the problem for a short period.

As soon as I start an application (Cadence Allegro PCB Designer 16.5 but I don't think it's relevant) my CPU usage gets to the roof and stays there long after I killed the application and I believe I every associated process. The CPU usage is so high that the battery will be drained after about 45 minutes (It usually last about 3 hours).
According to my task manager the responsible is "Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted)". As a matter of fact, preventing the executable from accessing the network sort of solves the issue. I don't believe I need that executable to access the network but I'd like to understand what kind of network service can consume that much CPU (was actually affraid of overheating) and to know if there's a more appropriate way to solve this.
