I'm at the point of no return with Hyper V. I have finally gotten access to the Internet. For the next step, where I can find Step-by-Step instructions to gain access to a Host Hard Drive from the VM. I have the MS Windows 8 Inside Out and it is of no luck. For some reason accessing a Hard Drive wasn't important.

I'm running Windows Server 2012 R2 on a Dell Poweredge R310. I just bought a G-RAID 8TB external USB 3 hard drive. I plugged the hard drive in and when I switched it on the computer crashed.
I didn't notice right away since the computer is headless. But when I got back to my desk I noticed the computer was rebooting. When it fished POST it gave me some warning about IRQL_NOT_LESS_EQUAL and rebooted again.
I removed the USB drive and now the computer is running fine.
whenever i connect my samsung 1TB portable Hard drive on a Dell xps 15inch laptop running windows 8 pro, it completely freezes the whole system. i can move the mouse but i cant click anything or go to task manager using ctrl alt delThese are the things i have tried:tried different cablestried different usb portsRemoved usb driversChecked event logs(the laptop crashes when i launch the event logs)Ran CCleaner cleaning registryAll the above did not work. i even tried to roll back to a previous restore point and that did not work either.I tested the hard drive on my brother in law's laptop and it worked fine. it is a acer laptop running fresh copy of windows 7.Is this a windows 7 error? do i have a virus maybe?(i am going to do a full system scan soon)What other things can i try?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've created a "Powered on machine" virtual installation of my Windows 8 on VMware VCentre Convertor to run in VMware Player, the size of the Hard drive was about 130GB, in the virtual machine I've deleted all my media files and uninstalled the large programs. The size of the C: drive is now 40GB which is more manageable for a Virtual Install which will be used to tweaking experimentation before I do it to my real Windows 8 installation.
How do I shrink the Virtual Hard drive from 130GB to say 45GB, I have installed the VM Tools and reading on the VMware website it saying you go to the VM Tools in the ghost install by right clicking it in the system tray or going to control panel on the ghost install and click on shrink. I have the icon in the system tray but the only right click options are about and there is nothing in control panel.
I have tried the "compact" option in the virtual machine settings by right click my Windows 8 virtual machine from the VMware player but it doesn't shrink the volume, it wirred away for an hour but the hard drive stayed the same size.
IF has Win 8 Pro 64bit in Wmware Player could they look to see if the shrink option is there on the Virtual install of Win 8 by right clicking VM tools in the system tray and clicking settings or options.
I can't RDP from my host to my VM in Hyper-V,I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro. I have enhanced session mode enabled,all integration services running,I'm allowing RDP connections in System Properties,RDP is allowed through Windows Firewall,and I can ping the VM from my host.

On my host machine (windows 8.1 ) i have 1 static ip and i can't have anotherone. So from this ip i have to share network to guest machine. The guest machine tries to get ip from dhcp but it can't. When i give it manual ip address (the ip from host computer) it works ok but i have to turn off host's network card because they cant have tha same ip address.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIf say I have a Windows Guest running its own AV software whether it's Windows defender or anything else then it seems to me that by having the HOST also running an AV software we are going to have two pieces of AV software running on the same data areas (the VM Disks).
It would seem to make sense to exclude the VM directories from the HOST's AV scan when the VM's are running -- but I haven't seen any mechanism to dynamically turn off parts of the AV system -- it's either an ALL or NONE mechanism.
I'm sure the performance of both HOST and GUESTS could be enhanced if AV software was ONLY running on the machines it needed to be - but AV software doesn't seem to allow for excluding certain parts of the machines.
If I have up and running say 4 VM's - that's my normal usage - then on the Virtual Machine directory on the Host I could have 5 (yes FIVE) AV pieces of software scanning / protecting it (The VM directories / data areas) at all times -- The VM's of course need to be individually protected if they are on the Net.
I got Hyper V setup (I think). The GUI client starts and I can go to the server. I could not get the continuous page after page setup to work unless I first set up a virtual hard drive. I think there was an option to install the OS if I set up the Vm and the VHd at the same time. I am now starting the VM and connecting to it and trying to install the OS using my original OS disk in the CD/DVD drive. It went to drive/DVD and I got the usual promtp: what do you want to do, including "run setup" which is what I selected.
When I do that it takes a long time to setup/copy files and when it gets tot he screen as to what partition to install to, it only shows the system reserved, my boot partition, my data partition (which has the VHDX) and my MBR (BootIt Bare Metal main boot record) partitions. At this point I stopped the OS installation by powering down as while I had these all imaged/backed up I did not want to overwrite any of them. it did not show the VHDX as an option to which to install.
as for other options like install over a network, my network adapter doesn't show and even if I made an ISO image of my OS disk, i don't know how I would get access to it.
In setting up Hyper V I ran the following in a supershell:
enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V -All
I tried to run the following in a command prompt:
Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Hyper-V All
but got an error that it did not recognize " -all "
I then ran it without the dash or maybe with a slash in front of it (I can't remember).
I don't even know what this command does and whether it could have an effect on installing an OS to a VHD.
I am running Win 8.1 Pro on an x220 with 8Gb RAM and a 500Gb SSD. I am trying to install Win 7 Ultimate on the VHD. How to install the OS to a virtual hard drive.
I have just upgraded to 8 using my 7 settings on a couple of my machines. Is it possible to put back the original 7 SSD drive - clone it to a spare drive and then create the VM set up on that cloned drive using the upgraded drive? I would of course remove the original 7 drive and just use the clone.
I'll just get an OEM 8 to install if what I have cannot be done.
I'm booting off my SSD which is drive C: and I have games and programs on an extra hard drive which was origanally drive H: but after a restart it switched to I: and when I go into Disk Management to change it Drive H: isn't there.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Essentials, it's filled with tons of old photos, movies, docs, games, and I'm scared to think of what else. The SATA to USB connector broke on it, so I took the drive apart and put it inside my computer. I opened up device manager because it wasn't showing up automatically and the 2TB is showing up as unallocated, I'm freaking out now because I'm scared the data was somehow deleted.What do I do?
edit: I realize also this isn't directly related to Windows 8 (besides the fact it's the OS I'm on), but I don't know where else to post it. I'd also like to say that I had a really deep feeling the drive was going to break continually for about two weeks before it happened, so if you have a similar feeling about something, don't ignore it!

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know there is good software out there to clone/image my hard drive and restore it to a new SSD drive. I'm just wondering though, since my laptop is brand new, I made a full recovery to a USB drive and included the OEM recovery partition.
Couldn't I just swap out the old HDD with the new SSD and boot with the recovery stick and do a full recovery back to the new SSD?
Also, however I do this, recover or image backup/restore, do I need to do some type of SSD alignment? I can't find a clear answer on that.

when plugging in my seagate freeagent hard drive i get the message "USB device not recognized. I have been to device manager and it appears as "unknown USB device (device descriptor request failed)". I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling, checked for new drivers/updates.

This is how it was setup. What I would like to do is to partition the amount of space i have from c drive into another drive.
Can manage to partition some hard drive space over to another driver letter, if i do a fresh install of windows, will this new drive be formatted too?
(Just asking this because when I owned a desktop computer, I had two drives. A c-drive and a d-drive. When I re-installed windows 7 on the desktop, all my files were still available on the d-drive, hence asking the above last question).

View 2 Replies View RelatedA few months ago my laptop broke and it needed repairs. The HDD was replaced and i got my laptop back with one new HDD inside and one "broke" HDD in a bag. Later the "Repaired" Laptop crashed again so i bought a new one and took the HDD out of the old laptop. I bought a HDD case with USB connection and both of the HDD's where intact. The oldest HDD contained windows 7 and the replaced contained windows 8. Now i want to sell the Windows 8 HDD so i want it to be clean of personal files but i want it to keep windows 8. I thought the solution was to run the windows 8 on the HDD so i can use the program deletation program of that windows 8. The problem is i dont know how to run windows 8 of a hard drive. I have searched the internet but with no success.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two USB 3.0 ports on the front of my Dell XPS 8500 Dell desktop. Once again I have caused the USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller to stop working because I did not disconnect the external hard drive before shutting down, it seems. It reminds me of leaving in a floppy drive but at least the computer would not boot in that circumstance. Now, there is no warning whatsoever. Dell technical support's answer is to refresh or reset the machine.
Any way that would be less time-consuming than having to reinstall all of my applications.
My HP laptop computer glitched up yesterday so I factory resetted it.
Just today, it finished, and I went to install some games on it.
While I was about to install BF4, it said that there was not enough disk space, so I went to my "THIS PC".
It said that I only had 4.18GB available out of 99.6GB.
When I purchased my laptop, it came with 1TB. And I have been using 1TB up until now. But it randomly shrunk by 900GB. WTF!?

While the new PC recognizes the drive it states that it needs to be initialized , doing so would wipe the data currently on the drive which would be unacceptable. How to get the new PC to recognize this drive and its data?
Recently lost my mobo due to a power surge no drives detected dead screen. i have a SATA to usb and can see my drive, and data is in tact but when i try to boot in the new computer (system recognizes drive) i get a( to quick to read message) something about the pc i think the issue is the computer im trying to put this drive in is about 3 years younger than the computer the drive was running in. when i use the win 8 recovery on a flash it loops. while running the flash quick message about pc(it does read from the flash but then fails) i was able to use the flash to load 8 on a formatted drive(in this computer) worked fine. and will use as a last resort but would really like to, of course keep all my drivers and settings and software settings etc
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have two Internal Hard disks in my system. First one is partitioned and used for system. i don't have problem on this hard disk. My second hard disk is 500 GB, and is not partitioned. I m using this drive for storing movies and music. The problem I faced is two of the folders are missing from this drive. THese two folders have several files. All other folders and files are intact. I just checked hard disk's used space and found to be 463 GB. I then selected all folders and viewed the combined spaces(including hidden and system folders) and I found it to be 389 GB only. Where are my these two folders? How can I retrieve it? Where is (463-389=74 GB) of space which is included in drive's "Used Space" metrics.

My computer is setup with two hard drives. My primary is a 120gb SSD and my secondary is a 1tb SATA. I use my secondary for all my data. Many times when I try to set a program to use that hard drive for storage, for example my camera software, it tells me I cant because I need administrative privileges. The same thing happened why I try to set my wifes iTunes account to store data on the secondary hard drive. We both have administrative rights so I don't understand whats going on. I don't want to go back to Windows 7 because I actually like Windows 8, but if this type of problem continues I just might.

I don't know how it works, it happen when my System is under Automatic Maintenance (in Windows 8). I want to save my disk space. I have check my disk using CHKDSK. i found error, and fix that. I tried to do this scenario before i start deploying uefi secure images for my company but it wouldn't show data. I can see the drive however in devices but it won't give it a drive letter and i can't access it.
Is there a resolution to this problem that i can troubleshoot just in case i run into it in the future.
