Virtualization :: Cannot Ping Ubunto Guest In Vmware Player

Apr 29, 2014

In Windows 8.1 Pro as host, with vmware player 6.02, Ubuntu 12 or 14, server or desktop guest:

Network adapter set to Bridge. The guest OS installs just fine. Guest gets an IPv4 address from DHCP server on the same subnet as the host. Guest can connect to the Internet for downloads. Host connects to the Internet. Yet a ping from host to guest or guest to host results in destination unreachable. Occurs even if NIS "smart firewall" is turned off.

I've used essentially the same setup with a Win7 host with no issues. Any clues why the two won't talk to one another?

[fwiw, I bounced off Hyper-V when I saw how sluggish it was compared to vmware player.

Virtualization :: How To Add Virtual Network Editor To VMWare Player

Mar 21, 2012

This enhancement applies to VMware Player standalone. If you have VMware Workstation installed, you don't need to apply this as Workstation includes all the features (and also includes VMware Player).

As the most VMware Workstation users know, there is a virtual network editor available that lets you configure the virtual networks, add new networks and delete networks for the virtual machines and also bridged networks with the host computer.

Edit:

One of the usage of the network editor is fixing the bridged network connection: How to fix bridged networking in VMware player - YouTube

The editor is useful (mostly for advanced users...but you'll never now when it might be needed) to add, delete and configure the default virtual networks that come pre-installed with Player.

VMware Player is Workstation's little brother, it's free and comes with less features. There is no Network editor with VMware Player (...or is it?)

The network editor is available in the VMware Player installer but it's default set NOT to install with the rest of the features (don't know why).

It seems different fixes need to be applied to each of Player's version 4, 5 or 6.

If using version 4 of the Player, this also applies to version 3.

I'm gonna show you how to add the network editor to VMware Player.

It's easy, or it should have been... but each version has its surprise.

Keep in mind that techniques used for one version apply for newer versions too but the files need to be extracted form other installers and other archives or additional files may be required.

Player version 3 and 4 To begin we first need to extract the VMware Player installer with some extra parameters (name-of-installer.exe /e .extract). You put the installer in a folder of your choice and create a shortcut of it as shown below (1) with the extra parameters in the target:

Then you run the shortcut that creates a folder (extract) containing all the components.

Go to folder "extract". We are interested in "network.cab": open or extract it and there you see "vmnetcfg.exe". It's the network editor.

Copy or move it in the VMware Player installation folder ("Program Files (x86)VMwareVMware Player" should be the default path).

This is shown below:

Now we are ready. The network editor is part of VMware Player just like in Workstation.

The virtual networks that appear in the notification area in Windows Vista and later can be configured or deleted:

Don't delete them if you use networking in your virtual machines. The network editor works as seen in last screenshot.

Player version 5 The fix above doesn't work in VMware Player 5: the file we need is included with Workstation. (using "/e extract" parameter for the installer still applies). Read here: VMware Communities: Whither VMware Player 5.0 VMNetCfg.exe?

Extra update: Vertigo here later on the thread: How to add the "Virtual Network Editor" to VMware Player some extra info is provided how to simplify things out: VMware Player 5 already has a vmnetui.dll included and the whole procedure posted above is not needed anymore!

Player version 6

Then, See post here. Until a command is discovered to see if Player includes the network editor again, the extraction technique of vmnetcfg.exe still is considered as 'the' fix.

Virtualization :: VMware Can't Connect To Network

Oct 26, 2013

if you UPGRADE to Windows 8.1 rather than clean install then the VMware adapter settings (ON THE HOST) get hosed up. Your VM's won't be able to connect to your network ( and / or the Internet too).

Either re-install the adapters manually - via the VMware program "Repair program" or uninstall VMware and install the latest version - in my case VMware workstation 10.0.1

I made another post about this in the Forum elsewhere.

Virtualization :: Windows 8 - Shrink Hard Drive In VMware

Feb 7, 2013

I've created a "Powered on machine" virtual installation of my Windows 8 on VMware VCentre Convertor to run in VMware Player, the size of the Hard drive was about 130GB, in the virtual machine I've deleted all my media files and uninstalled the large programs. The size of the C: drive is now 40GB which is more manageable for a Virtual Install which will be used to tweaking experimentation before I do it to my real Windows 8 installation.

How do I shrink the Virtual Hard drive from 130GB to say 45GB, I have installed the VM Tools and reading on the VMware website it saying you go to the VM Tools in the ghost install by right clicking it in the system tray or going to control panel on the ghost install and click on shrink. I have the icon in the system tray but the only right click options are about and there is nothing in control panel.

I have tried the "compact" option in the virtual machine settings by right click my Windows 8 virtual machine from the VMware player but it doesn't shrink the volume, it wirred away for an hour but the hard drive stayed the same size.

IF has Win 8 Pro 64bit in Wmware Player could they look to see if the shrink option is there on the Virtual install of Win 8 by right clicking VM tools in the system tray and clicking settings or options.

Network / Sharing :: Connection Was Reset Message After Installing VMware-player And VirtualBox On Firefox / Chrome And IE

Sep 18, 2013

After I installed VMware-player and VirtualBox, I started to get this error "The connection Was Reset" (got that on firefox, different name on Chrome since it has an error code, but leads to the same error).

Weird thing is that I can still explore some of the website that are open, for instance I leave a Facebook tab or Twitter tab, or any other site (not necessarily a social network). But if try to open a "new" site, which is not explored yet, then I get the error.

Things I tried so far:
1) delete cache, doesn't work at all.
2) Change the MTU Value, that was quite interesting, since I do get an error when i try to ping with my current value, but when i find a value that apparently should work, after I set that value as my MTU, I get the error with that value, so i go down a few numbers until i get a working value, set the MTU and error again. and so on.
3) Made a repair of my windows 8 install, preserving my personal files, but didn't work.
4) Only thing that seems to work is restart my pc.

I didn't have time yet to try to reinstall my antivirus (Avast) .

Network / Sharing :: Max Value For -w In Ping Command?

Nov 15, 2013

Trivia question: max value for -w in ping command? I don't mean the max wait a ping can experience. I just mean the maximum value after -w on the command line that will not give an error. If they use a 32 bit integer then it's pretty big. But if it's only 16 bit maybe we're limited to 64k?

ping 127.0.0.1 -n 2 -w 50000 > nul
--------------------------^^^^

For the purpose of this trivia let's limit it to Windows 8 command line .. not Linux or OS/2 or whatever.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 Pro - Can Ping Server - Can't Map Drive

Jun 13, 2014

I can ping our work server (windows 8 server) as well as connect to it using a remote desktop connection, it just won't map as a network drive.

I had this problem a few days ago, so I tried everything I could think of (dns flush, ip config release/renew, restarting, disconnecting from network drive & re-mapping) and nothing would let me back on. I did a system restore to 2 weeks ago and it works again. So of course then windows wants to do its updates, I let the updates happen and the problem returns.

It seems like the windows updates are the root of the problem. For now I'll have to restore to before the updates & turn off the updates.

Network / Sharing :: Ping Via Hostname SLOW But Via IP FAST

Dec 17, 2013

Host machine on same network LAN address 192.168.1.102 on WLAN - perfectly good connection / internet etc

Name BROWNBEAR

Windows machine to be pinged -- BLACKDOG on 192.168.1.103 but on a LAN (Ethernet)

Both PHYSICAL machines (i.e not running inside VM's)

FROM BLACKDOG no problem pinging BROWNBEAR either by Host name or IP address

BLACKDOG in the Ethernet connector seems to have a Connection specific DNS suffix WAG320N (Where that came from I haven't a clue !!) - It seems to be the HOSTNAME in the router.

BROWNBEAR pinging BLACKDOG via IP address 192.168.1.103 --works fine and shares accessible via mount via IP address.

Now when BROWNBEAR Pings BLACKDOG via Host name (BLACKDOG) it returns slowly PING BLACKDOG.WAG320N(62.169.151.91) -- haven't a clue where it got that IP from !!!.

Looks like I've got a DNS hose up somewhere

How to "Unhose" it. I don't want to refer to BLACKDOG by IP address each time since after reboots this will change (should be managed by DHCP). I haven't a clue on WHICH machine the problem is on -- BROWNBEAR is WIFI connected while BLACKDOG is on Ethernet.

Windows networking

IPCONFIG for BLACKDOG (Ethernet connected) shown

Router Ethernet settings shown (should I have a Domain !!) Always worked without one before.

Network / Sharing :: Ethernet Doesn't Have Valid IP Configuration - Ping Went Up

Aug 7, 2014

Nothing would fix the problem ""Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration".

After playing a match in "League of Legends" with my desktop I noticed my ping went up and I disconnected right after, I looked at my network icon in the taskbar and saw an yellow error mark. I clicked on the network icon and it said "Unidentified Network" and "Limited". I tried to troubleshoot the problem and the problem found was: "Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. I ran ipconfig with the cmd tool and I noticed Ipv4 Address was 169.254.171.146 (As ive heard that means windows is using a default ip by itself).

I have a lot of devices in my house like laptops and smart-phones that work perfectly good. One thing that did work was sharing 3G internet from my iPhone to my desktop via usb.

Solutions tried: Resetting router, disabled the "allow computer to turn of this device to save power" in ethernet options, tried different cables, restarting pc and updated drivers (installing the driver to a usb from my laptop).

Network / Sharing :: High Latency / Lag / Ping When Playing Online Games

Feb 9, 2013

I installed the Windows 8 Consumer Preview last december and since then, all my online games both from local and international servers have been experiencing extreme lag during gameplay and loading. This only happened after i installed the consumer preview and since then has been happening everytime i try playing any of the online games. I tried playing offline games to see if it might be the graphics but did not encounter any graphics lag and the offline games played perfectly.

I've contacted my ISP and one of their techs came over to check my connection and found nothing wrong with it or from the connection from their servers. Even streaming and downloading speeds are normal.

I've checked my connection at speedtest.net and my ping and internet connection are also registering as normal

Now i tried contacting support for 2 of the online games Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, they requested a pathping file which i sent to them and copied below:

Tracing route to 202.9.67.254 over a maximum of 30 hops

0 Boni [192.168.1.101]
1 192.168.1.1
2 112.203.160.1.pldt.net [112.203.160.1]
3 119.93.255.233
4 210.213.131.46.static.pldt.net [210.213.131.46]
5 210.213.131.93.static.pldt.net [210.213.131.93]

[Code] ....

My graphic driver is up to date and i'm running a 2GB RAM 800 mhz + 8 GB readyboost RAM

Seems my problem is loss of data packets during the exchange of data going on during online gameplay.

How to resolve this problem, considering streaming and downloading speeds are fine and only online games are affected, both the game support and isp support are blaming each other for the problem and i'm still left back in square 1 with my problem.

Hardware Drivers :: HDD Clicking And Win 8 Stuck After Installing VMware Or VBox

Aug 15, 2014

I've had my computer for about four years with an Asus motherboard, and I recently (like two days ago) had it changed to a Digilite motherboard. I'm also a regular user of VMware or VirtualBox, whichever is feeling fancy to me.

About six months ago, my Seagate hard disk started clicking regularly at about 10 seconds interval, which quickly came down to 1-2 second interval, causing the hard drive to click furiously. Due to this, my Windows 8 would get stuck and won't even give a BSOD. Same thing would happen at restart. Automatic Repair didn't work, but chkdsk would find some corrupted sectors and fix the issue. On the next restart, after running smoothly for 5 minutes, the clicking and stucking would start again. I finally narrowed down the problem to VMware and removed it and ran chkdsk again. This seemed to solve the problem.

After getting my new motherboard, I thought the results might be different, so I installed VMware and ran it for a long time. There was no clicking of HDD until the next startup. As soon as I logged in, desktop became slow and stucky, and finally I heard the horrific sound of that clicking again. (Now whenever I hear ANYthing click ANYwhere, I freeze for a second.) I knew what the problem was and applied the same solution I applied months ago.

I need to be able to run VMware or VirtualBox to go through a few Linux and python books I'm reading. My brain just cannot grasp how a software could affect the hardware this badly! I'll try a few other things to narrow down the problem while I wait for responses. At this point, where changing the HDD seems to be the only option

Windows 8 - App Security For Guest Account

I can go in one-by-one and deny Guest access, but I must have over 100 apps they can access and run. They can even uninstall programs.

It would nice if Windows 8 had set all tiles to deny guest permissions for all of the app tiles and let us turn the few apps we give guest "on."

Any way or a program that you could deny guests access to these app tiles in bulk?
