Virtualization :: Cannot Make Copies From Activated VHD Files?
Apr 24, 2014
I have a virtualbox running on my Ubuntu Server 13.10. My goal is to run virtual machines on HDD, while every other stuff is running on SSD. Because the CD/DVD drive wont work on the server, I had to install Windows 8.1 in Virtualbox on my own computer. After successful installation, I transferred the .vhd file to the server (HDD) and created a new virtual machine from Ubuntu Server / php Virtualbox using the .vhd file I just transferred.
But now the Windows 8.1 running on the server's HDD complains that it is not activated. I tried to activate it using the key card from the box, but it says that the code is not valid.
Yes, the first time I installed Windows 8.1 on Virtualbox on my own computer, I entered the activation code successfully. So I can't make copies from activated .vhd files?
As I am having problems with USB and getting my workfiles onto my guest machine I thought I could load them onto my host then access them via file sharing. I have set up the VMware player with the location of a shared directory on the host but I cannot see that on my guest XP desktop. The steps I need to do to get this working. So far I am having no end of problems getting this new laptop to work with my old software. Using Windows 8 Pro 64 bit on host and Windows XP Pro
I went to them to purchase yet another updated copy, but refuse to lease the software for an annual fee, which appears to be their new business model. ("N, O, nu-uh".)
Yes compression comes native with Windows, but I'd like to password protect backups and such, and find it handy to have it in the menu when I right-click on a file(s). Is there a standout alternative for the 64bit Win 8.1 environment? I've heard of 7-Zip, but know nothing about the various competing apps.

After installing the 8.1 Pro update on a fresh install of 8 Pro, I only entered the Power options one time: to change the "high performance" plan to never turn off the display. (as I usually do when setting up windows)
Today, I noticed my display turn off after a few minutes, so I went to see if something had changed my power plan. To my surprise, I have found that I now have over FIFTY copies of the High Performance Power plan! Many of them have different settings in minutes regarding when the display shuts off, and when the PC goes to sleep.
I can't delete any of them, as windows apparently considers them ALL as default plans. If I didn't create these plans, how did they get there? How can I delete them? I know deleting default power plans is dangerous and can cause errors so I just want to avoid another re-install of windows.
I am trying to add photographs to my pc and make files for different sets of pictures but the photos app that is bundled with windows 8 is not very useful. It wont let me make separate files and when I want to print from this app I cant. I have looked at other available apps in the store but they all appear to be the same with poor write ups. also when I import pictures into pc it makes two copies so if I upload 20 pictures it copies 40 and then I have to delete half of them, this is really starting to irritate me now, I am trying to start photography as a bit of a hobby but I am finding windows 8 not very user friendly at the moment.
I built my own PC last year and I've done several OS upgrades in that time frame. First I started with windows 7 basic which I then promptly upgraded to 7 ultimate because my university offered upgrades for $7. I then upgraded to 8 when it first came out and then 8.1 too. I put a new SSD in my PC and copied all my 8.1 data on to it I then turned the old SSD in to a second boot drive for OS X. I'm having problems with 8.1. I wanted to create a repair drive to hopefully root out and fix whatever is causing windows explorer to crash. It's not a virus I've made sure of that. I have a feeling whatever caused this happened when I upgraded to 8.1 and then copied over the SSD. What my product key is for 8.1 pro i just found the email microsoft sent me with my windows 8 key but i have no disc.
when i followed the instructions to make a recovery drive it told me that some of the required files are missing and to use a windows installation disc or media which is a problem because all my windows 8 upgrades have been done online.
also my PC currently doesn't have a disc drive i removed it because i only ever used it to install windows 7 basic.
I am trying to debug some crash dumps which all point to NTOSKRNL.EXE but I am unable to debug or even analyze it because the WinDBG throws me an error :-
Code: ************* Symbol Path validation summary **************Response Time (ms) LocationOK C:symbols Symbol search path is: C:symbols Executable search path is: C:symbols Unable to load image SystemRootsystem32 toskrnl.exe, Win32 error 0n2*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for ntoskrnl.exe*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for ntoskrnl.exe
Now, I am unable to understand what is the reason behind this even after much browsing. Also, the symbols are downloaded and saved in C:/Symbols. I am sure that these are working because some DUMP files which do not point to NTOSKRNL get debugged fine.
Also, one more issue I am facing that whenever I have to open another crash dump file immediately after closing one, the option for opening the Crash Dump gets greyed out -_-' . The only way to open another DUMP file is via closing and opening workspace and everything again?
I have put together a PC for the first time. It' POSTs and All is well. I have installed a SSD 250G drive as my primary drive with windows 8.1 install. Also have a 1.0 Terbyte Hard Disk for storage. How do I make sure that all data files(downloads, applications, etc) are sent to the hard drive.
The thing is, i open java files with Eclipse by default. Today i wanted to take some notes about Java the programming language which include text and code. I used Notepad++, and with it you can save the file as a wide variety of types, among them java file. I chose this, but since they are associated with eclipse, it makes opening them with Notepad++ tedious. I want to ask if there is a way to set the default program for some java files Notepad++ and leave Eclipse for the rest? This would be a useful feature for few other types too.
I use SkyDrive quite every time. For each file, I copy to my Windows explorer folder of SkyDrive, I have to individually right click each file and select Make Available online only. I want the explorer to do this for each and every file I copy to the folder so that I don't need to waste time to do it all by myself.
With KMSMicro 5.0,I have successfully activated Windows 8.1 Pro (6.3.9600.16384) with KMS key ,but when I add the function of WMC,the system shows that this version windows can not be added functions. Why? In the past ,I activated Windows8 Pro successfully with KMSMicro 4.0,then I added successfully the function of WMC .
I installed Windows 8 Pro with this key -*****-J8CK4 and activated with KMS. My system works perfectly, but when I have upgrade with free upgrade WMC key I not have function add features and Add features to Windows 8.
Why I don't have a setting for personalization? I am activated and running a pro edition of Windows 8.1 [URL] .... When I goto main pc info next to my "your copy of windows is activated" is a terms button which gives me [URL] .....

my laptop came with win8 core edition. Anyways, i updraged to pro version using add features to windows and activated it. DONE
everything was fine untill for some stupid reason i remembered that i have a wmc key (the one microsoft gave for free for some time). So i searched my email and found the key. I was not expecting it to work as the time period to install the free key was over.
Anyways, i decided to try it out. I enter the key in add features and i am surprised to see that it says the key is valid. so i clicked next. It installed fine and when it rebooted i was even greeted with a screen saying everything worked fine. Then i notice windows is not activated. I go to activation and it returns the error saying the key is blocked.
Now my windows has wmc BUT is not activated. I can not use my win8 pro key since it does not have wmc. I searched online and it seems that the only way to go back is to reinstall win8
Is there any way to remove wmc? Or any other way i can activate my windows using my pro product key?
I dont understand if the key was blocked why did it say that the key works :
My Dell Inspiron All-In-One came with Win8 preinstalled. Purchased from Staples I have the pc for about a year and was forced to do the 8.1 upgrade. The upgrade went ok but now I'm seeing a message that Windows is not activated. I call Microsoft and they said it is a volume license key and I need the retail key. I called Staples - no luck.
I have three Laptops in office and we have windows 8 Pro x64 activated with same Volume License Key. Now I need Windows 8.1 Pro x64 and tried searching 8.1 in store but cant...then tried with windows 8 key and it says you cant use retail key so read in forums that I need windows 8.1 x64 Pro volume License iso file.
Is there any magnet or torrent link where I can download windows 8.1 x64 pro for VL installation? Also tell me if I would be able to activate 8.1 pro x64 VL iso with the existing VL key of windows 8 64bit pro.
I bought a new xps12 with Win8 last week and absolutely love it.
However I was given an upgrade key fro Win 8 prowmc. After putting code in it said that this key works, I restarted and it does say windows 8 pro with media centre but it also says that windows is not activated.
I just want to revert back to how it was when I received the laptop last week. I have tried restore both windows and dells and I have made a recovery image with USB but when I try and boot from this it says that there are files missing.
I Just want everything wiping and laptop back to how it was when I unwrapped it.
Is this possible? I know I shouldn't have used the key.
I've just activated my teacher's laptop (ASUS K34AS) with Windows 8.1 ProWMC via Skype, but after i shutdown it and restarted, it won't boot. Keep showing error "Your PC ......... We must restart ........." (BSOD) .........
i just got a new computer, it came with windows 7 home premium pre installed, however it is not activated and it says i have 30 days to activate it.
however i dont have a key as i didnt purchase the OS, instead i have ordered Windows 8.1 64Bit Operating System DVD English OEI/OEM International and my dvd disc comes tomorrow so my question is, can i install windows 8.1 over windows 7? i would just put the disc in delete whats on the harddrive, format it and install my new OS right?
I bought yesterday an OptiPlex 7010 with windows 8. Product key is in the bios as I have read on the internet. Due to a crash of the os I had to reinstall windows 8 using the operating system cd included in the package. I have booted from dvd. After a clean reinstallation the os is not activated and I can not do anything about it because no product key is available. What should I do?
