How Long Windows 8.1 Can Be Non Activated

Oct 1, 2013my laptop came with win8 core edition. Anyways, i updraged to pro version using add features to windows and activated it. DONE
everything was fine untill for some stupid reason i remembered that i have a wmc key (the one microsoft gave for free for some time). So i searched my email and found the key. I was not expecting it to work as the time period to install the free key was over.
Anyways, i decided to try it out. I enter the key in add features and i am surprised to see that it says the key is valid. so i clicked next. It installed fine and when it rebooted i was even greeted with a screen saying everything worked fine. Then i notice windows is not activated. I go to activation and it returns the error saying the key is blocked.
Now my windows has wmc BUT is not activated. I can not use my win8 pro key since it does not have wmc. I searched online and it seems that the only way to go back is to reinstall win8
Is there any way to remove wmc? Or any other way i can activate my windows using my pro product key?
I dont understand if the key was blocked why did it say that the key works :

Mar 25, 2014I used my retail Windows 8 Pro key to activate Windows 8.1 RTM. Then used my Windows Media Center to add features and get Windoes Media Center
I used my laptop for like 5 days, now suddenly I see the build number mentioned on the desktop, so I checked my activation status and it said windows is not activated
I clicked Activate Now, and it shows my product key ending in: GBFNG-2X3TC-8R27F-RMKYB-JK7QT that is a default installation key and not an actual product key
So I hit the Enter key button and enter my Windows 8 key again, that says : "this key cannot be used to activate this edition of Windows".
I used the WMC key, that also says "This key didn't work try another key"
Could this be because I tried to use the Windows Setup box yesterday?

The upgrade went ok but now I'm seeing a message that Windows is not activated. I call Microsoft and they said it is a volume license key and I need the retail key. I called Staples - no luck.

Dell :: XPS10 - Windows RT Is Not Activated / Device Gets Stuck At Boot Logo
Jul 22, 2013I upgraded my Dell XPS10 from Windows RT 8 to Windows RT 8.1 Preview.
It has 2 serious issues:
1) Windows RT is not activated.
2) Device gets stuck at boot logo.
Now I'm trying to use a USB recovery drive to roll my XPS10 back to Windows RT 8. Unfortunately I failed to use the recovery files from Microsoft Surface RT, XPS10 could not boot with those files.

Apr 11, 2014I bought my Dell desktop about 3 years ago. Since then I replaced the HDD with a new Samsung SSD and reinstalled Windows 8 on it. After that it started running really fast.
I usually don't reboot it too often, I do it maybe once a month after installing updates. What I've been noticing lately is that it takes progressively longer to boot this desktop up. I initially thought that the SSD was going bad, so I cloned it 1-to-1 to the original HDD that the desktop came with and that I never used, but the boot time didn't change. I timed it today and it took about 5 minutes to boot up while showing this window:

Aug 21, 2013Windows 8 which I installed recently (from factory recovery image) suddenly now takes too long to shutdown.
Around 2 minutes and 20 seconds. I tried disabling and enabling "Fast Startup" but that didn't affect the shutdown time.
Also reduced the "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" from 5000ms to 3000ms but also there is no effect.
Also the "ClearPageFileAtShutdown" is set to 0.
I even tried hibernating instead of shutdown and it took 2:20 minutes too !Also disabled hibernate with "powercfg -h off" and tried to shutdown , and took 2:20 minutes too.
Windows 8 - Long External HDD Access Times?
Sep 23, 2013In windows 8 everything worked pretty great, but now after doing a clean and fresh install of 8.1 pro it can sometimes take up to 30 seconds to access any of my external usb or esata hard drives. This never ever happened on windows 8. It doesn't always happen but it happened enough for me to make this thread. I tried changing ownership and security policies to my account just to make sure, and i tried reinstalling the drivers for the drives too and it still does this!

Windows 8 Takes Long Time To Boot / Restart And Shutdown
May 2, 2014I recently purchased alienware m18x r2 with following specs
I7 3630m
Gtx 680m sli
12gb ram
750gb wd
120 (windows installed)
& 256gb sdd
Now for the problem when I receive the laptop it was preinstalled with window 8 and on the first boot it took around 5 to 6 mins to boot to desktop..I reinstalled the windows considering it to be the bloatware fault..
The problem gets solved but after i download alienware osd drivers , alienware command center and nvidia drivers the delay is back ..
It starts with a bsod (your pc ran into problem)error window minidump memory.dmp.etc and after that windows boot restart and shutdown after almost 5 to 10 mins..
In the duration of delay there is no hdd activity and after 3 to 5 minutes when the hdd gets actives it boots to desktop in 5 secs..

However I was given an upgrade key fro Win 8 prowmc. After putting code in it said that this key works, I restarted and it does say windows 8 pro with media centre but it also says that windows is not activated.
I just want to revert back to how it was when I received the laptop last week. I have tried restore both windows and dells and I have made a recovery image with USB but when I try and boot from this it says that there are files missing.
I Just want everything wiping and laptop back to how it was when I unwrapped it.
Is this possible? I know I shouldn't have used the key.
Windows 8.1 Pro 32bit - Icons In Folders Taking Too Long To Display Correctly
Mar 22, 2014Whenever I open a folder with more than a couple of icons it takes about 10 seconds for the icons to appear correctly. Sometimes some icons won't even display the way they should even after those 10 seconds, it's just a generic blank icon.
Is there a way of correcting this?

Creating Windows 8 Recovery Drive Taking Extremely Long Time
Aug 7, 2013I am creating a Windows 8 recovery drive on a new 16GB flash drive (The only option with my new refurbished Gateway NE56R49u Laptop). The process has been running approximately 5 hours now with the green progress bar being only 1/32 inch from complete for approximately 4 hours. Should I click the "cancel" tab and/or the "red X" to close the program? If I do, will I be able to start the process again? This just seems like an extremely long time to complete such a small portion (1/32 inch on the progress bar) of the process.

Apr 24, 2014I have a virtualbox running on my Ubuntu Server 13.10. My goal is to run virtual machines on HDD, while every other stuff is running on SSD. Because the CD/DVD drive wont work on the server, I had to install Windows 8.1 in Virtualbox on my own computer. After successful installation, I transferred the .vhd file to the server (HDD) and created a new virtual machine from Ubuntu Server / php Virtualbox using the .vhd file I just transferred.
But now the Windows 8.1 running on the server's HDD complains that it is not activated. I tried to activate it using the key card from the box, but it says that the code is not valid.
Yes, the first time I installed Windows 8.1 on Virtualbox on my own computer, I entered the activation code successfully. So I can't make copies from activated .vhd files?
