Windows Disc Image Burner Not Available In Windows 8.1
Sep 15, 2014
I'm trying to burn an .iso image, so I right-click on it and I expected a "Burn image" option, but it doesn't show up.
Is my Windows installation bad or has this feature been removed for Windows 8.1?
I can't find "Windows Disc Image Burner" anywhere in my Windows. I've had to install imgburn in order to burn the the iso.

I have 10 computers with identical hardware that all have their own oem license. What I want is to have the same setup on all 10 computers. What I remember from previous Windows versions is that you had to activate Windows individually with its own oem key for every computer you restored with a preferred disk image. From what I read the product key procedure is a bit different in Windows 8 and that the key is stored in the bios? The activation should also be handled automatically by Windows, is that correct?
So what I really wonder is: Do I still have to activate every restored pc manually or will Windos 8 do this for me?
A second related question: Are there any imaging/cloning software that can be set up to promt me for a new computer name in the restore process?

OK, so I made a backup DVD of some OS related programs for my computers onto a DVD, but when I attempted to MOUNT the image from the disk to Win 8.1's included virtual drive, I get an error that the Disc Image is not formatted for NTFS file system, and cannot be mounted.
I can copy the files from the disc to a location on the desktop and execute the files from there, but it's a royal pain in the neck to do this every time.
(Yes, I understand, I probably will need to build a new image and burn it to a new DVD, but I want to make it one that I can run the disc from my optical drive and it will work!).
USB is volatile storage, and can be erased. I prefer hardcopy backups for this reason.

I have problem mounting .iso images in Windows 8 Pro.
The error message I was getting was this:
and in powershell I got this:
Essentially the problem is that windows .iso mounting does not like 'sparse' files. I had used Acronis backup to backup my original .iso files and this DOES use sparse files. You can check if a file is 'sparsed' by looking at the files details in properties. The 'P' in the attributes represents a sparse file. See the screenshot below.
The result? When I restored my .iso images I could no longer mount them.
The simplest solution I have found is to just copy the .iso to a new file - this seems to create the new file without the sparse flag set.

I've been dual-booting Windows 8 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate, but a while back my Windows 8 kind of went "South" and wouldn't boot at all (I got an error message that a device was "not attached"). I have a recent system image on an external USB hard drive, but when I boot to "system recovery" using my repair disk it can't seem to find my USB drive at all.
The tutorials here mention installing a SATA driver to access disks that are not recognized, but this doesn't seem to be the case.

Upgraded to windows 8 pro, worked fine for sometime, but now it does not boot- says either error loading operating system or disc read error. Re installed Windows 8 after booting with another hard drive with winXP, worked fine for sometime, then it failed again displaying the same error messages. Been using this system since long, but this has never happened before. I have reinstalled again by the same procedure, but always wary of the same problem happening again.

I am trying to copy a CD to disc using Media Player. When I try to set the destination location by clicking CHANGE in Rip settings/More options/Rip music to this location, nothing happens. I can't set a location. When I click the Rip CD button, I get the message "Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play, burn, or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a file that has been moved, renamed, or deleted."
The Media Player sees the CD and can play the tracks from the CD, so it's not that it can't find the CD.

So I just got my computer about a month ago and I have noticed that 2 or 3 times a week it freezes up for 15-20 minutes or more, and the Disk usage is at 100% on the performance monitor. I checked the system error logs and found that the Bonjour service from apple had a critical error when it froze. I then disabled the service from running and computer ran fine for a week or so then started freezing again. I have ran disk optimizer, defrag, and virus scans with no success to fixing the problem. On the processes tab of the performance monitor it will show a few different processes using the most disk i/o. Windows Installer, Windows Module Installer Worker, System, and few others I cant remember right now.
Side note: this problem happens at any time with 0 programs up and running or 10 programs. I have 16 GB of memory so its not a memory problem. Just hope its something that can be fixed and I didnt just waste a bunch of money on a crap machine.

I have a system that froze and I have been struggling with for days. Long story short, Lenovo Twist with solid state hard drive and no optical disc drive. I woke up last week and had a black screen. So I rebooted and went through the steps to recover (not 12 after a couple of days of free time I had to force the recovery with f10 and then I could only get the reset windows option to come up wanting me to insert my recovery media.
I don't have any. Windows 8 was preinstalled so I don't have the key. Yes it was visible on the system but that's not an option now and without a optical disc I couldn't burn a recovery disc.
After arguing with Lenovo, Staples, and Microsoft about warranties etc. I want to just get my system running. I want to buy windows 8 and install from a stick or external optical drive right? I cannot just download to the stick and insert into a usb slot. I cannot restore from a factory (Microsoft) CD if I bought the external drive.

How do I ensure that nobody can slip in a Windows 7 or 8 disc and reinstall windows on my laptop? I have a BIOS password, but in the boot priority order it doesn't list my disc drive as an option.. Only "Windows Boot Manager"... So I'm unsure as to whether someone can just stick a disc in and reinstall windows.
Reason being is that I had my laptop stolen two months ago. I had tracking software on it (Prey), but the theif never connected to the internet, which is required for the software to work. Which leads me to assume that they just formatted (my win 7) laptop and reinstalled windows straight away. So I'm learning from my mistakes, and wanting to do it right for my new laptop.

Today my beloved Win 8.1 gave me a surprising license deactivation, meaning the license just suddenly became void despite working properly for some few months. I suspect two reasons:
- I changed GPU the day before (but it's not like the problem occurred right after changing GPU)
- during system boot right before occurrence of the issue Windows was performing (routine?) HDD autorepair. This could suggest that some system files were damaged in the process
Obviously, my license is genuine.
I did try slui.exe 4 - nothing loads after selecting region. The loading icon just keeps running. I also tried sfc /scannow. It said some files were corrupted which could not be repaired. I'm attaching the log file. I also tried performing autorepair from Windows CD - to no avail.
I don't even know if buying a new license key (which I obviously would like to avoid) would work for me. An activation suddenly disappearing is just so... windows.

I have successfully done the following:
Integrated French (fr-FR) language pack to Windows 8.1 Enterprise en-US (x64).
Integrated French (fr-FR) language pack to Windows 8.1 Enterprise en-US (x86).
Combined the above 2 into an AIO.
I was able to install any of the 4 operating systems to install without requiring the serial number (image only contains enterprise sku).
The problem now is that I have a Windows 8 64-bit installation. I want to upgrade it to 8.1 using the disc. When I put the disc in, it complains that I need to insert the 64-bit disc.
Is there anyway to make my AIO image support upgrades for 32-bit and 64-bit?

This is for a Samsung NP550P5C... having typed it into Google, the options appear a little confusing with the best option being how to make recovery discs for an HP laptop (presumably using HP's built in wizard), requiring 4 DVD's. Other suggestions seem to tell you how to make a "Repair" disc for Windows 8 with one readers comments of.....
" Windows 8 recovery Disk is used to reset your PC - it is supposed to reload the operating system and restore factory default settings. You need a USB flash drive 16GB or larger. I haven't found yet a way to create Windows 8 recovery CD/DVD, which can be used to reinstall the operating system."
It's not even clear how to do it on a Flash Drive though I would prefer using discs...

My Gateway machine was performing a windows update when the neighbourhood power went out. It was off for four hours. When I went to turn the computer back on, it said automatic repair the diagnosing your pc.....that lasted about 5 hours! Then a blue screen with options came up. When I went to pick the advanced options, I clicked accidentally on the first one and it rebooted into the repair loop again. Since it takes so long for the diagnostic part, when the blue screen came up again it was likely the middle of the night.
I saw it at 7:00 am and tried to click the advanced options but the computer had gone to sleep by then and so once again it got rebooted into the loop. Gateway refused to support since the warranty is up. I can't find a Recovery disc image for 8.1 to put on a usb stick, and I'm back to trying to find answers on my 12 year old machine running XP. I tried the boot to safe mode with alt+F10 but can't get that to work either. If I knew how to force a reset to factory defaults without being able to get into windows I would. I've been doing this for 3 days now and I was just starting to like 8.1 too...

I have already created two Recovery Disc for my Dell 15R 5537 with OS Windows 8.1. Yesterday, i tried to create a partition and mess up the whole laptop. I tried to use the two Recovery Disc to bring the laptop back to its original factory OS. I booted with Disc 1 and works fine; when Disc 1 finished, it ejected, and I put the Disc 2 in. Then it no longer continue. It stuck at:
Progress: 53% completed
OK - Initializing.......
OK - Backing up Dell Backup and Recovery settings...
Then, the "Preparing your hard driver..." just keep turning and won't go any further for several hours.
How to have my Windows 8.1 recovered?

I updated to windows 8.1 for a test drive.
My windows store apps work now which is good and so far have not seen any problem just yet.
However, if I do encounter a problem and need to use my repair disc. Will it work with a windows 8 repair disc?
Note: can not use a recover because my bios does not let me boot from a USB drive.
Now, I Do Know You Can make a CD or disc that will let you boot from your USB drive using
Plop - Documentation / Manual / Examples - Free Boot Manager, builtin usb driver, native usb, boot different operating systems, cdrom, usb, freeware, option rom bios but rather use my own CD If I can.

I have a laptop running 8.1. Just bought it, never really used 8.1 before.
The error message I'm getting is:
"MagicDisc can't open driver(mcbus), please make sure that MagicDisc is run as administrator. You need to right-click MagicDisc.exe on Windows Explorer, and click "Run As Administrator" to run."
Even when I run the program with admin privileges.
I have an iso image I need to run. If magicdisc can't run on 8.1, then I could someone recommend a good program to run disc images with?

I just got a new laptop, a Lenovo X230, for which I paid extra to have the OS on it as Windows 8 Pro.
So--now I have it, and Win 8 Pro 64 is installed and activated on it. I am a legal owner of Win 8 Pro.
However, I would like to do a clean install of Win 8 on the computer, to have it free of bloatware, etc. (In fact, I would like to set up a multi-boot with Win 7, and perhaps even triple boot with Xp as well. (I have installation media and my product keys for XP and 7 though, so those are not really a problem.)
The computer came with no discs at all. There is a procedure to make recovery disks. I may do that, but I think those will be to restore the computer to how it came from the factory, and therefore not usable for a clean install.
I don't see my product key for Win 8 anywhere. Not on the computer, not on any kind of card that came with it, etc.
I looked at the tutorial here for clean install of Windows 8, but it requires an install disc and product key. I have neither, although I am a legal owner of Windows 8.
Is there a way I can create (from my installed Windows 8) a win 8 install disk, that can be used for a clean install? Or a link to download one? Is there a way I can get my product key?
