Windows 8 - Won't Even Show Login Screen On Restart
Nov 5, 2012
Recently I downloaded the new Windows 8, replacing Windows 7. It was running flawlessly for a few days until recently when I restarted the computer, it won't even show the login screen. Everything is black, and I cannot even see my mouse pointer. I've been reading several people's similar problems saying to go into safe mode, but It won't even boot me into safe mode when I try. The screen just goes black.
Windows is asking me for a password despite I've never had a password.
Here's what happened:
I've never had a password and choose during the win install to have 1 local account without password.
I used to have a user/login name with an non ascii character (é), and it was causing me some trouble. Hence I decided to change it with ascii only characters. Control Panel, users etc ... properties, changed the name of the local user.
Reboot, and boom, Windows asks me for a password and is displaying the former user name !! But there's no option to change the user name, I've read that there should be a back arrow but it's not here (probably because windows "thinks" there's no point since there is only 1 user).
I don't know what to do, I used a Linux live usb distro to use some tools that can reset password and unlock account, however:
1/ it can only reset password, which seems not to be the issue here, the issue is the wrong user name 2/ the linux tool shows 1 local user with the last update name
So I'm guessing windows is not using the proper name to login, but doesn't provide any mean to change it.
I am running windows 8.1 and have noticed I am not given a choice anymore between my account and guest account. I have gone to control panel (users and accounts) and Guest Account does not show. However when I go to turn on Guest Account, it is already on. It just will not show up on my login page.
In Windows 8.1 do the on screen notifications only show on the Start screen?
I'm talking about the big ones I see with the black bar, such as low battery warning.
Twice I've been on the desktop and I never got a low battery warning. To test I made sure I was on the Start screen and sure enough the warning popped up. Also, when I switched over to the desktop the battery icon showed the exclamation point where I don't think it ever did when always on the desktop.
Every time I Restart my Laptop, the Lock Screen does not show the Welcome Screen and skips directly to the User Account login screen. Actually, it shows a darkish blue screen for a couple of seconds and then jumps to the user account login.
When I use the logout function or the shutdown (and I power it back on) everything works normally.
I have ran SFC / Scannow in windows (8.1 by the way).
I have recently installed windows updates and after restart the black screen occurred after I typed my password. About five days before that I have reinstalled my Mobile Intel 4 series driver and now in Device manager it shows 3 grayed out monitors which were installed when I have reinstalled the Video driver. The monitor driver that Is currently loaded was installed when I installed the OS itself.
This morning I woke up to find that I could not log in to my windows 8 computer. The first 'lockscreen' would appear, but the when I clicked to go to the next screen to log in, all I see is text in the bottom right hand corner telling me about windows updates that will automatically update in two days (I have already installed most of the newest WUs).... Having issues with the latest WU?
Just installed 8.1. When I logged back on, there was only a blank screen with a cursor. I activated task manager and a warning appeared stating, "?CreateRect@Value@DirectUI@@SAPEAV12@HH... could not be located in the dynamic link library C:WindowsSystem32Windows.UI.Immersive...
SFC scannow fixed the issue for awhile then i got force logout then i login the same issue reappear... I dont feel like doing fresh install ...
After installing a game of Minecraft he claims that around that time, the computer has not been able to boot. So he brought it over to me, and I'm not to familiar with Windows 8. So I try turning on the laptop and it freezes at the login screen. It has his username, and the little loading screen like its trying to load the account, then it freezes and it stops there. So what I'm trying to do is a system restore to an earlier time. Maybe even to boot into safe mode. How to access System Restore is to hold shift while restarting the computer. Except I can't access the computer. It doesn't go past the login screen. I can go into the BIOS, but nothing else. Any method were I can do something to access system recovery another way? What I can do besides a system restore? But simply put.. Turn on, goes past the Asus loading screen, gets to login screen, username is displayed. Computer freezes. Sometimes it just goes to a black screen and stops there.
For some reason after I sign into my user on my desktop, A blank screen appears and nothing loads. I tried the avast configuration since I'm using avast but it didnt work. I tried scanning the system in command promp and it says one corrupt ile was repaired...
I have noticed on all my clean installations of Windows 8, that there is 10 Second Hang before the login Screen. (Nothing but a black screen). It gets pretty annoying when you're often changing in between a triple OS set up.
When I right-click on any tiles it doesnt show the right click option like to change the tiles size, remove the tiles and such.. It just show the "tick icon" on it but no menu option.
While I am not new to Windows 8, I am new to Windows 8.1 Pro. First I installed 8.1 Pro from a dvd, restarted it, no problems... then installed the updates, then when I restart, it hangs on restart screen.... So I have to reboot.
I got fed up doing that so I formatted the hard drive, installed windows 8 Pro, tested restarting....no problems... then updated, no restart hangup... then upgraded to 8.1 pro...still no restart hanging...
Installed all updates, still no hangup...installed Soundblaster drivers...still no restart issues...then installed Creative Console launcher....now it is back to hanging on restart screen....
If I uninstall Creative console software, it still sticks on restart screen....it's like windows got messed up by installing software but even tho I uninstalled, still have the restart screen hangup...
I have a Laptop with a 120GB Solid State Drive. My primary operating system has been Windows 7 Ultimate. Recently I decided to try and Install Windows 8 Pro Along side windows 7 . Dual Boot. I read about Dual Booting in this Official Windows 8 Magazine and it seemed easy. I ran into a few problems:
1. I was able to 'shrink Volume' to create another partition of atleast the 20GB minimum required for windows 8. I did 25GB's because my 120gb solid state drive was almost full with other windows 7 files and partitions. The problem I ran into was in creating a 'New Simple Volume' and formatting my new 25GB's of space. An Error message saying "not enough memory or space available to perform operation" kept popping up. Am I getting these error messages because I already have 4 different partitions on my drive? The different partitions were A: Windows 7 OS and Files, B: Windows 7 Hibernation, C: Windows 7 Recovery and D: an unknown 8gb primary partition
2. I decided to delete the Windows 7 Recovery partition, because I have my Windows 7 DVD, and I didn't mind re-installing everything if I were to mess up. Plus my OS doesn't run from that partition, and I'll have room to create my new Windows 8 simple volume. (probably a dumb decision)
3. Disk management didn't want to delete my Recovery partition (probably for good reason) and merge it's free space with my 25GB' partition that I had previously created and was unable to create the New simple volume in. I had to use a 3rd party program called Paragon Partition Manager free edition to do this. I had to restart my laptop for Paragon to delete the 2GB recovery partiton and merge the space with my un-formatted 25GB partition. After the Paragon program finished, my laptop wouldn't boot windows 7 and just hung up with an Intel boot agent screen.
4. Luckily, I had already made my Windows 8 bootable flash drive to Install the OS. Since Windows 7 wasn't booting, I decided to go ahead and try to install windows 8 with my flash drive. It worked! I found my 27GB partition in the setup menu, was able to format it, and install Windows 8. Now windows 8 starts up! My other partition with windows 7 also shows up in Disk management and In my computer!.
5. My biggest question is, How can I make that Windows 8 Dual boot screen pop up when I turn on my laptop? I can boot into windows 7 if I go to Disk Management in Windows 8, Right click my windows 7 partition, and click "Make Active partition". I then hit restart, and my laptop boots to Windows 7 no problem. I Can boot into windows 8 by doing the same Thing in Disk Management in Windows 7. "Make Active Partition" and restart Pc. So in a sense, I have what I want; Windows 7 and Windows 8. But, I shouldn't have to go into Disk Management each time I want to change the system Im using. how to get the Windows 8 Dual Boot option at startup?
I power my computer on and seems to startup fine and gets to the loading screen for windows. Then when its get to the screen where its suppose to sow the lock screen its just black. I can here the windows startup sound and can see my mouse and move it around but can't do anything. I have been trying to find a solution for the past couple days but can't get to much due to time restrictions. Deployed right now so I'm kinda limited on what resources I can use and instead of dicking around with this problem id just use my time to skype family and friends. I usually like to solve to computer problem myself for the know how but don't have the time.
The laptop I have is an ASUS g74, I purchased the copy of windows 8 from microsoft's site, upgrading from windows 7 pro. I opted to keep all my personal files/apps because the programs it warned me as being incompatible were random games and such.
I googled this problem, and it seemed fairly common months ago when windows 8 first came out on dell/HP laptops. It worked flawlessly when I first upgraded and booted up fine but once I restarted I couldn't see anything other than the screen occasionally flickering brighter and darker.
However, if I plug my laptop up to a TV with an HDMI cable I can see everything on the TV. It's just the laptop screen that is blank.
How do you change Windows 8 to startup with the list of users on the computer rather than the user who logged in last? I know you can hit the back button but it's just annoying adding unnecessary steps to logging in. How to change this?
I shut down my computer last night. It runs 8.1 and when I shut it down I do not believe it installed updates.i tried to boot it. It boots and after I type in my PIN, shows my desktop for a few seconds. Then, my display will either turn black or a blueish grey. There is no cursor. It does this every reboot now. I can not do anything except reset when it happens.
System info:
Two GTX 760's in SLI Two Asus monitors
Possible culprits:
1 - I have Actual Multiple Monitors trial installed. The freezing/display blanking seems to happen when the trial time left window shows up, but that may be coincidence. 2 - I heard graphics card driver updates and windows updates can clash in some way and cause a similar issue. From what I've read, a cursor is still on screen and task manager can be opened with CTRL SHIFT ESC. Neither of these work for me. 3- Virus? I have avast so I doubt it.
I have had Windows 8 since it came out and a little while after I started having issues with it not waking up/randomly freezing. I reinstalled 8 and for a while I have not had any trouble but now I am having issues again.
Basically the computer randomly freezes... but not really. So certain things don't work like opening or closing applications but the cursor can still be moved. Eventually most things won't work but again the cursor is still moveable.
Then again tonight it happened when I got home from work. This is the same problem as before. My computer was left on and locked and when I returned the logon is missing but my cursor is there and moveable.
I have been trying to fix this since the last time it occurred and still cannot find why this is happening. I have the latest drivers, ran scans with Bitdefender and Malwarebytes, checked the event log but nothing shows up from the time I left to the time I got home. I've attached a picture showing the screen frozen with just the cursor and no username/password on the screen.
i was customizing my desktop with Rainmeter and i wanted to know how to change my toolbar's color because i didnt want the blue, someone said to download Vistaglazz and repatch some files. after doing so my computer restarted and after the initial normal startup and it saying "Please wait..." like it usually does before it shows the login users, the screen went black, then for a split second the screen went pitch black, almost as if the computer turned off, then it would turn on again and go back to the normal "Please wait..." screen. this would be ok but its happening so fast and over and over again that i cant even hit f8 or Ctrl Alt Delete. im using a different computer because i literally cant log onto the other one.
Yesterday I installed an update for Win 8.1 (It was around 90 some mb) after I login I only get a black screen with a useless white cursor. Screensaver works fine, when I do a CNTRL/SHIFT/ESC the task manager box pops up for a few seconds and disappears. I was able to create another user account and everything works fine, but I need to get my first account working properly ASAP.
I removed the password login screen on my wife's Windows 8 laptop, so the laptop boots up to the Desktop with no login requirement. She no longer has Administrator privileges. Control Panel/User Accounts show a password protected Administrator user and Local Account Password protected Administrator user.
I want to run Chkdsk since her HD has a read sector problem but need full Administrator privileges to do so.
How do I restore the password protected Administrator logins?
I just updated my Windows 8.1 when I restarted my PC. When I was going to login, it was just a black screen. If you are in the login screen, the selected language in the right left corner and the internet connection in the left corner. Both of those two signs are flickering in the corners. And my cursor is also flickering.
Upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro from 8 through the Windows Store. Everything seemed to go smoothly. Updated graphics card drivers prior to install of 8.1. Now whenever I start up, I can log in, but then it goes to a black screen with a cursor. Ctrl-Alt-Del will bring up the task manager and from there I can access programs and get on the internet. So after maybe 5 minutes or so after opening a program (usually firefox) the Metro screen randomly loads. None of the store apps worked, though I was able to find a fix for that. Some of them still don't work right though. Is there a better way to upgrade from 8 other than through the store?
Title says it all. You can restart Windows explorer via task manager, but can I do the same with start screen? Because I changed the amount of tile rows on it, but I have to log off. Unfortunately, I am running a server which people are on currently and I'd hate having to wait a couple more hours to try this..
I'm administrator for my laptop runs windows8 pro.. I don't want every time have to type my password I tried using netplwiz but failed to do so, as looks as good only for second user ...
