View 6 Replies View RelatedYesterday I installed an update for Win 8.1 (It was around 90 some mb) after I login I only get a black screen with a useless white cursor. Screensaver works fine, when I do a CNTRL/SHIFT/ESC the task manager box pops up for a few seconds and disappears. I was able to create another user account and everything works fine, but I need to get my first account working properly ASAP.

View 5 Replies View Relatedlong time ago I downloaded Windows 8 Enterprise x64 from MSDN and activated via microsoft, and now I got RTM and GA from other sources (what I mean it's that I did not download directly from MSDN). Now that I have some time I make some tests.
The activated machine has never get internet connection, results:
Enterprise 8 and RTM iso:
-I use the Setup.exe with graphical options.
- That iso don't allow me inplace update, only install with keep data, keep data and aps and keep nothing. Using keep data and apps, I got 8.1 deactivated.
Enterprise and GA iso:
-I use elevated cmd ---> setup.exe /auto:upgrade (seem this option is the same as install and keep data & apps)
-Using graphical interface of setup.exe is the same as before, no inplace update. Using keep data and apps, I got 8.1 deactivated.
-My account password did not work, as it install english keyboard layout and set it to default (mine is Spanish)
-A new pop-up appear after install in the upper right corner telling me how to use the charm bar (something that did not appear on RTM)
Is this normal? Or should I think I download a bullshit with same SHA1 as MSDN? Why I can't make inplace update with an activated Enterprise machine and GA iso? and moreover, Why are this iso's so different?
Then how to make inplace update to Enterprise edition without internet connection?
I just purchased a laptop with Windows 8 installed on it. I have one problem. I know if you hit one of the corners of the screen the right toolbar becomes activated and is displayed. My problem is that it tends to be displayed when I move the cursor in the middle of the screen. When it is displayed I have to deactivate it in order to continue what I was doing. I do not mind the toolbar if it is not so sensitive.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWindows is asking me for a password despite I've never had a password.
Here's what happened:
I've never had a password and choose during the win install to have 1 local account without password.
I used to have a user/login name with an non ascii character (é), and it was causing me some trouble. Hence I decided to change it with ascii only characters. Control Panel, users etc ... properties, changed the name of the local user.
Reboot, and boom, Windows asks me for a password and is displaying the former user name !! But there's no option to change the user name, I've read that there should be a back arrow but it's not here (probably because windows "thinks" there's no point since there is only 1 user).
I don't know what to do, I used a Linux live usb distro to use some tools that can reset password and unlock account, however:
1/ it can only reset password, which seems not to be the issue here, the issue is the wrong user name
2/ the linux tool shows 1 local user with the last update name
So I'm guessing windows is not using the proper name to login, but doesn't provide any mean to change it.
I've had windows 8 for a bit, but since I've installed the OS not a single one of my windows apps will work. I've tried a lot of options and none fix it. I will open up a app ( windows store app or PC settings for example) and it will open and display the icon and blown up screen then immediately minimizes and will not allow me to maximize it. I'm so tired of it! I can't download any new apps or update my old ones let alone use any of them. I ran a basic trouble shoot through Microsoft and it came up at one point saying I need a Microsoft account. which is crazy because I've put in my CD key like 50 times and registered it when I put the OS on this computer . After installing a game of Minecraft he claims that around that time, the computer has not been able to boot. So he brought it over to me, and I'm not to familiar with Windows 8. So I try turning on the laptop and it freezes at the login screen. It has his username, and the little loading screen like its trying to load the account, then it freezes and it stops there. So what I'm trying to do is a system restore to an earlier time. Maybe even to boot into safe mode. How to access System Restore is to hold shift while restarting the computer. Except I can't access the computer. It doesn't go past the login screen. I can go into the BIOS, but nothing else. Any method were I can do something to access system recovery another way? What I can do besides a system restore? But simply put.. Turn on, goes past the Asus loading screen, gets to login screen, username is displayed. Computer freezes. Sometimes it just goes to a black screen and stops there.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOver the past few months I have been unable to us any programs that require fullscreen and it is very hard to surf the internet or type anything because my computer keeps deselecting and reselecting my active window. I have tried disabling the touch pad and unplugging my external mouse so that is not a problem. I have also ran virus scan after virus scan and nothing has come up. The strangest thing is that this only happens on my account(adminitrator) and not my father's account(guest). I am running Webroot as my antivirus.

How to solve Windows 8 black screen problem after login - It didnt work.
I shut down my computer last night. It runs 8.1 and when I shut it down I do not believe it installed updates.i tried to boot it. It boots and after I type in my PIN, shows my desktop for a few seconds. Then, my display will either turn black or a blueish grey. There is no cursor. It does this every reboot now. I can not do anything except reset when it happens.
System info:
Two GTX 760's in SLI
Two Asus monitors
Possible culprits:
1 - I have Actual Multiple Monitors trial installed. The freezing/display blanking seems to happen when the trial time left window shows up, but that may be coincidence.
2 - I heard graphics card driver updates and windows updates can clash in some way and cause a similar issue. From what I've read, a cursor is still on screen and task manager can be opened with CTRL SHIFT ESC. Neither of these work for me.
3- Virus? I have avast so I doubt it.
I have had Windows 8 since it came out and a little while after I started having issues with it not waking up/randomly freezing. I reinstalled 8 and for a while I have not had any trouble but now I am having issues again.
Basically the computer randomly freezes... but not really. So certain things don't work like opening or closing applications but the cursor can still be moved. Eventually most things won't work but again the cursor is still moveable.
Then again tonight it happened when I got home from work. This is the same problem as before. My computer was left on and locked and when I returned the logon is missing but my cursor is there and moveable.
I have been trying to fix this since the last time it occurred and still cannot find why this is happening. I have the latest drivers, ran scans with Bitdefender and Malwarebytes, checked the event log but nothing shows up from the time I left to the time I got home. I've attached a picture showing the screen frozen with just the cursor and no username/password on the screen.
Windows 8.1 all working fine, but when I hibernate it then resumes again seconds later for no apparent reason
Tried powercfg /lastwake but it is not telling me what caused it to wake
What I can do to stop this?
I'm using Windows 8.1 Enterprise RTM
At the login screen I see my user ID and a Guest user. Can I hide the guest user at login screen - I only want to see my user.
I DON'T want to boot in bypassing the sign on screen. (Note this is NOT the same as booting direct to desktop !!!).
This is new in Windows 8.1 RTM - I never had this in previous editions of windows.
(Note I really don't want to DISABLE the account - I just don't want to see it at login).
i was customizing my desktop with Rainmeter and i wanted to know how to change my toolbar's color because i didnt want the blue, someone said to download Vistaglazz and repatch some files. after doing so my computer restarted and after the initial normal startup and it saying "Please wait..." like it usually does before it shows the login users, the screen went black, then for a split second the screen went pitch black, almost as if the computer turned off, then it would turn on again and go back to the normal "Please wait..." screen. this would be ok but its happening so fast and over and over again that i cant even hit f8 or Ctrl Alt Delete. im using a different computer because i literally cant log onto the other one.

I just updated my Windows 8.1 when I restarted my PC. When I was going to login, it was just a black screen. If you are in the login screen, the selected language in the right left corner and the internet connection in the left corner. Both of those two signs are flickering in the corners. And my cursor is also flickering.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an old desktop running windows 7 (spec below). I had a 60GB partition and figured I'd install 8.1. I downloaded 8.1, proceeded to the install and everything went fine.
Upon reboot the desktop loaded to the windows 8 icon and immediately rebooted itself, and then launched into windows 8 automatic repair (without showing OS choice beforehand).
The pc has been stuck in this loop and I cant get out of it. I've attempted to reinstall a few times but it's the same story. I ran a disk check but no problems were found.
Windows 7 runs fine and has done for years, just a little sluggish as it needs some cleaning.

CPU: Athlon X2 3800+
GPU: GeForce 8500 GT

I am using Windows Defender in Windows 8. I see that the Defender becomes only active after a few minutes.
If the Defender is activated before than every thing is in red , and unable to start it. The fault code is than 0x80070426.
But as explained already after a few minutes everthing is ok.
Question:
*does this mean that during that time one is not protected?
*maybe is it technically as such?
Upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro from 8 through the Windows Store. Everything seemed to go smoothly. Updated graphics card drivers prior to install of 8.1. Now whenever I start up, I can log in, but then it goes to a black screen with a cursor. Ctrl-Alt-Del will bring up the task manager and from there I can access programs and get on the internet. So after maybe 5 minutes or so after opening a program (usually firefox) the Metro screen randomly loads. None of the store apps worked, though I was able to find a fix for that. Some of them still don't work right though. Is there a better way to upgrade from 8 other than through the store?
