I have noticed on all my clean installations of Windows 8, that there is 10 Second Hang before the login Screen. (Nothing but a black screen). It gets pretty annoying when you're often changing in between a triple OS set up.
View 9 RepliesMy little brother has an 8.1 laptop, and from what I understand, when it prompted him for updates he clicked to restart. Now when the laptop tries to restart he sees his manufacturer logo and the Windows 8 loading circle, but after this the monitor goes black and stays that way. At some point a bluescreen pops up, says something about fixing the PC, goes to 100% after 5 minutes, restarts the PC, and the PC goes back to the manufacturer logo to start the loop again.

Here's what happened:
I've never had a password and choose during the win install to have 1 local account without password.
I used to have a user/login name with an non ascii character (é), and it was causing me some trouble. Hence I decided to change it with ascii only characters. Control Panel, users etc ... properties, changed the name of the local user.
Reboot, and boom, Windows asks me for a password and is displaying the former user name !! But there's no option to change the user name, I've read that there should be a back arrow but it's not here (probably because windows "thinks" there's no point since there is only 1 user).
I don't know what to do, I used a Linux live usb distro to use some tools that can reset password and unlock account, however:
1/ it can only reset password, which seems not to be the issue here, the issue is the wrong user name
2/ the linux tool shows 1 local user with the last update name
So I'm guessing windows is not using the proper name to login, but doesn't provide any mean to change it.
I have recently installed windows updates and after restart the black screen occurred after I typed my password. About five days before that I have reinstalled my Mobile Intel 4 series driver and now in Device manager it shows 3 grayed out monitors which were installed when I have reinstalled the Video driver. The monitor driver that Is currently loaded was installed when I installed the OS itself.

SFC scannow fixed the issue for awhile then i got force logout then i login the same issue reappear... I dont feel like doing fresh install ...
After installing a game of Minecraft he claims that around that time, the computer has not been able to boot. So he brought it over to me, and I'm not to familiar with Windows 8. So I try turning on the laptop and it freezes at the login screen. It has his username, and the little loading screen like its trying to load the account, then it freezes and it stops there. So what I'm trying to do is a system restore to an earlier time. Maybe even to boot into safe mode. How to access System Restore is to hold shift while restarting the computer. Except I can't access the computer. It doesn't go past the login screen. I can go into the BIOS, but nothing else. Any method were I can do something to access system recovery another way? What I can do besides a system restore? But simply put.. Turn on, goes past the Asus loading screen, gets to login screen, username is displayed. Computer freezes. Sometimes it just goes to a black screen and stops there.

It was running flawlessly for a few days until recently when I restarted the computer, it won't even show the login screen. Everything is black, and I cannot even see my mouse pointer. I've been reading several people's similar problems saying to go into safe mode, but It won't even boot me into safe mode when I try. The screen just goes black.

How to solve Windows 8 black screen problem after login - It didnt work.
I shut down my computer last night. It runs 8.1 and when I shut it down I do not believe it installed updates.i tried to boot it. It boots and after I type in my PIN, shows my desktop for a few seconds. Then, my display will either turn black or a blueish grey. There is no cursor. It does this every reboot now. I can not do anything except reset when it happens.
System info:
Two GTX 760's in SLI
Two Asus monitors
Possible culprits:
1 - I have Actual Multiple Monitors trial installed. The freezing/display blanking seems to happen when the trial time left window shows up, but that may be coincidence.
2 - I heard graphics card driver updates and windows updates can clash in some way and cause a similar issue. From what I've read, a cursor is still on screen and task manager can be opened with CTRL SHIFT ESC. Neither of these work for me.
3- Virus? I have avast so I doubt it.
I have had Windows 8 since it came out and a little while after I started having issues with it not waking up/randomly freezing. I reinstalled 8 and for a while I have not had any trouble but now I am having issues again.
Basically the computer randomly freezes... but not really. So certain things don't work like opening or closing applications but the cursor can still be moved. Eventually most things won't work but again the cursor is still moveable.
Then again tonight it happened when I got home from work. This is the same problem as before. My computer was left on and locked and when I returned the logon is missing but my cursor is there and moveable.
I have been trying to fix this since the last time it occurred and still cannot find why this is happening. I have the latest drivers, ran scans with Bitdefender and Malwarebytes, checked the event log but nothing shows up from the time I left to the time I got home. I've attached a picture showing the screen frozen with just the cursor and no username/password on the screen.
Running Windows 8 Pro since its release and it has been a nice journey so far but recently or more precisely since last 3-4 days,windows has been hanging up and being unresponsive and the only way is manual hard shutdown.
One time it hang up in middle of skype call and last time it hang up in middle of browsing in Google Chrome.Windows is updated to the last update i.e 02/03/2013.
Also when laptop hangs up the fan starts rotating at high speed.
Any tests i need to run to pinpoint the source of hang ups??
I think its more of a software issue rather than hardware ...

At the login screen I see my user ID and a Guest user. Can I hide the guest user at login screen - I only want to see my user.
I DON'T want to boot in bypassing the sign on screen. (Note this is NOT the same as booting direct to desktop !!!).
This is new in Windows 8.1 RTM - I never had this in previous editions of windows.
(Note I really don't want to DISABLE the account - I just don't want to see it at login).
With Windows 8.1 Update 1 Enterprise 64 bit, how do I make sure that, when I start the computer, the Login Screen is displayed immediately?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi was customizing my desktop with Rainmeter and i wanted to know how to change my toolbar's color because i didnt want the blue, someone said to download Vistaglazz and repatch some files. after doing so my computer restarted and after the initial normal startup and it saying "Please wait..." like it usually does before it shows the login users, the screen went black, then for a split second the screen went pitch black, almost as if the computer turned off, then it would turn on again and go back to the normal "Please wait..." screen. this would be ok but its happening so fast and over and over again that i cant even hit f8 or Ctrl Alt Delete. im using a different computer because i literally cant log onto the other one.

Screensaver works fine, when I do a CNTRL/SHIFT/ESC the task manager box pops up for a few seconds and disappears. I was able to create another user account and everything works fine, but I need to get my first account working properly ASAP.

She no longer has Administrator privileges. Control Panel/User Accounts show a password protected Administrator user and Local Account Password protected Administrator user.
I want to run Chkdsk since her HD has a read sector problem but need full Administrator privileges to do so.
How do I restore the password protected Administrator logins?
I just updated my Windows 8.1 when I restarted my PC. When I was going to login, it was just a black screen. If you are in the login screen, the selected language in the right left corner and the internet connection in the left corner. Both of those two signs are flickering in the corners. And my cursor is also flickering.
View 3 Replies View RelatedUpgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro from 8 through the Windows Store. Everything seemed to go smoothly. Updated graphics card drivers prior to install of 8.1. Now whenever I start up, I can log in, but then it goes to a black screen with a cursor. Ctrl-Alt-Del will bring up the task manager and from there I can access programs and get on the internet. So after maybe 5 minutes or so after opening a program (usually firefox) the Metro screen randomly loads. None of the store apps worked, though I was able to find a fix for that. Some of them still don't work right though. Is there a better way to upgrade from 8 other than through the store?

The problem is FXST30.dll. Replacing it with the Windows 7 copy resolves it. This may require taking ownership.

When I restarted, I found out that the input language for my password has also been changed, and my usual key combination for changing languages does not work. Thus, I cannot enter my password to change my language back to English. find a way to change the input language on the login screen?.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWindows 8 was fine. For Windows 8.1 I had Windows 8 format and do a clean install and then immediately upgraded to 8.1. Now at least half of the time when I boot up after BIOS info and the windows logo shows briefly I see a black screen for 2 to 5 seconds I'd say. Then the lock screen. So after I get to where I can input my password everything is fine.
But I can't figure out why there is this few seconds of black nothing before I can input my password. I can't see that anything is wrong.
I can log in, which takes much longer than ususal, to be taken to the desktop screen. everything is black except for the cursor and the windows icon in the bottom left. Ctrl+Alt+Del gets me to that normal menu and I can open task manager and from there open windows explorer and from there open most programs. I cannot get to the normal home screen, run disks or change tabs.
I have run start-up repair and enabled safe mode to no avail.
I cannot refresh or restart as i bought windows 8 online and have no physical copy of it.

I have had this issue for a while now, but never really thought about it.
Every time I log in on my account (and ONLY mine), as the screen is saying "Welcome" and the dot circle is spinning, I get a short screen flicker. It only happens once, and ONLY when I'm logging in.
Been running the upgrade to 8.1 from a factory installed Win 8 system on my Dell 5720 laptop. Download took quite long and now installation is taking even longer. It went through multiple steps on the Dell logo splash screen starting with "Getting Ready". Then it went to "Setting Up". Another lengthy time period. Now its doing "Setting up a few more things" and has been hung at 28% for over an hour. Hard drive activity very low and sporadic.

View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently I upgraded my Toshiba Portege R500 laptop from Windows 7 to windows 8 pro. Everything worked fine for almost a month and since last few days I am not able to see login screen, its just blank. Since I am unable to login I cannot access the apps/programs neither I can shut the laptop from Windows 8 via Charm menu or Cntrl+Alt+Del.
I am stuck as I cannot reinstall the OS as when I use power down button on the laptop the machine goes to sleep and on power up I cannot access boot priority screen to change to optical drive.
Right out of the blue, windows 8 loaded up painfully slow so i restarted my HP g6 laptop.After restarting the laptop the user login screen appeared fine fine but as soon as i login the metro tile screen flashes to a default coloured desktop screen and back to to the metro screen every second. It is continous and you can't access anything as the screen jumps to the other one before you can even do anything!
My laptop is only a few months old and there has been no hardware change/upgrade.I managed to get into the system restore and restored to a point a few days before this issue started but, when the laptop restarted, the issue remain and the screen jumped between the 2 screens.
There are no error msgs or any can of beeps that appear. There was nothing of any note that happened prior to this issue occurring and the laptop worked fine until this issue.
