When i don't use Windows 8 for about 20 minutes, it literally locks up and even though i can see the screen, the key board and mouse are functionless.
And all the while i thought it was my KVM switch, and so i disconnected the KVM mouse and keyboard, but continued using the screen KVM switch and that's when i realized, its not a KVM switch problem, its a Windows 8 problem or Windows 8 setting.
Windows 8 Start Up locks. When Voice recognition Tab appears at top of start screen then goes to "sleeping" system does not respond to any key stokes or mouse clicks. If I rush I can get into control panel before this happens. How do I remove "Voice Recognition"?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been having a bit of a problem with Explorer in Windows 8. Occasionally the explorer just locks up. Typically when I right click on an item, it will freeze. At which point I usually use the task manager to kill Explorer and start it up again. However, until I restart my machine, I am unable to change the listing view (details, medium icons, etc) because the buttons are greyed out, nor am I able to right click on the item without explorer locking again. Additionally, icons don't appear to render afterwards either.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two hard drives One is a SSD and the other is a WD 64 MB cache 2 terabyte drive. I have Windows 7 installed on the SSD which works fine. I later, when I received it, installed Windows 8 on the other drive for a dual boot. It works, the screen comes up allowing me to choose between the OS's. Like I said picking 7 works fine but when I go into 8 it boots up, shows the Metro and is locked solid. I havent waited more than 5 mins but i get tired of it locking. I have 16 gigs of Kingston Ram, 2 ATI 6950 with combined 4 gigs. AMD 8 core and a ASUS motherboard. Everything was bought this year. Except for the Video cards. I am trying to update the ATI software but it is locked so i cant.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows 8.1 preview and whenever I play certain games my monitor locks up and my GPU fans stop and the only way for it to work is by restarting my PC. I don't think my card is defective because I was able to run the game once until it crashed. I am running on 32 bit if that makes any difference. And I don't believe it overheats because I keep MSI Afterburner running the whole time. This also happened on Windows 7 32 bit.

It displayed a message saying "The Drive is Locked, you will have to unlock the drive to continue" so HOW do you unlock a Hard Drive?
How to do this before I either pull my hair out, or start from scratch and re-format the drive and do a complete new install of Windows 8.1
One thing I have done about a week ago which may be causing this problem is I converted the Drive from MBR to GPT and if this has locked the drive.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem connecting my laptop to an external monitor. I've encountered this problem a few times now. My external monitor will just stop working one day, and the only way I've found to fix it is to delete the keys located in the EFI partition.
After the keys are deleted I can reset EFI in the BIOS and the monitor will then be detected by Windows. It's getting to be really annoying having to reset EFI every couple days. So, I decided to see if I could unlock the EFI partition and try to remedy this problem.
So far I managed to set the partition as a basic data partition using SET ID=ebd0a0a2-b9e5-4433-87c0-68b6b72699c7
Next, I assigned it a drive letter. But if I try to explore the contents I get an error saying "I don't have permission".
How to assign the correct permissions??
I have a Gateway laptop running Windows 8. I have an auto diagnostics program called Auto Enginuity that I have "add ons" purchased for, when I type to put in the feature unlock key, after a couple days it will no longer be activated. Then when I installed the 8.1 update it will no longer accept the activation key, I can type the key in and it does not hold it. On the same note, I'm running Microsoft Streets and Trips gps software and when I go to update it,it updates like normal but after the update it still says update needed, like it doesn't "hold" any updates or key codes that I install.

I have been unsuccessful at building a WinPE image that provides BitLocker support. I searched around the internet and found many posts. Eventually, I ended up trying to build it with the various added packages I discovered in the various posts. However, in the end, none worked and this is the message I am getting after booting into my WinPE environment:

I can't get the custom sounds that I've set are not working. I do have the custom startup soind working but that's it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy PC was working fine before today, until I used Ultra UXtheme patcher for Windows 8 x64 and then applied a custom VS for Windows 8.
After a restart, Windows Explorer was not launching, so I opened task manager and did a sfc /scannow. After a reboot, I get to the Windows 8 boot menu (I have a dual-boot on this HDD with win7), and then the screen just turns on and off every few seconds, with the numlock light flickering with the screen.
I tried using the automatic repair, both from the boot menu and from a backup USB, but it does not detect anything. and I still have the same issue.
I restored the backups of uxtheme.dll, uxinit.dll, and themeui.dll, but that didn't work either.
Attached is my ntbtlog.txt.
There is no BSOD, the HDD keeps on spinning a few minutes after boot, and the numlock keeps on flashing. Anything else I can do from my win7 install? I'm currently trying to delete the theme.
Deleting the theme doesn't work, safemode doesn't work either. It seems to be a driver issue, but there were no driver updates when it was working?
I've having an issue that I think some ppl had, windows 8 crashing going to blue screen of death or blank black screen and then it restarts by itself, also I have noticed that it says repairing disk in D:/

I get a blue screen error of "driverirql_not_less_equal" when my laptop monitor dims.

When I turn on or restart my computer after the teal windows logo with the spinning wheel the screen will flash off quickly then come back on black and then 10 seconds later show the lock screen.

Everytime or almost everytime I click on an app or go to the desktop and try to get on IE 10 (desktop version), my screen flashes and goes black for a few seconds then returns me to the screen with the space needle, then I click on it and it signs me back in. When I try to use Google Chrome, the websites freeze up on me. I don't want to have to reinstall/reformat as I paid $40 for this for one, and secondly, I don't want to have to repurchase Office 2010 as my licenses ran out. I ran every update that comes up and restart, but this doesn't change this issue. . why it does this and any way to fix it without reformatting?

I'm talking about the big ones I see with the black bar, such as low battery warning.
Twice I've been on the desktop and I never got a low battery warning. To test I made sure I was on the Start screen and sure enough the warning popped up. Also, when I switched over to the desktop the battery icon showed the exclamation point where I don't think it ever did when always on the desktop.
Just had this new laptop running windows 8 and its an Acer.When I select the photos tile on the screen it goes to another screen which is black with a blue square icon and underneath it tells me that there are no files or folders in this view.There are photos in my picture folder as I just put then in.But if I go to the other method and select the My picture folder the photos are there.

The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
I have recently installed windows updates and after restart the black screen occurred after I typed my password. About five days before that I have reinstalled my Mobile Intel 4 series driver and now in Device manager it shows 3 grayed out monitors which were installed when I have reinstalled the Video driver. The monitor driver that Is currently loaded was installed when I installed the OS itself.

View 2 Replies View RelatedEach time I start the computer is is necessary for me to adjust the screen resolution to cause the screen tiles to appear when clicking "start" on the right side of the screen. What am I not doing? When I open the computer the next time I adjust the screen resolution back to a different setting and the tiles come up.
Also (I'm obviously a newcomer to W. 8), I get a dialogue box each time which refers to to: "RUNDll". Something about an issue with opening something???? I click "OK" and it goes away. Appears every time I start up.
