Windows 8 - Programs Won't Launch And DVD Drive Not Eject
Oct 31, 2012
I installed Windows 8 on my laptop like 5 days ago, everyone worked fine and dandy there but somehow now most of my programs won't launch but i can see it in Task Manager, my DVD drive won't open when i try to eject it physically, when i try to right click and eject it in My Computer, it freezes immediately and doesn't recover so i'd have to end it via TM.
But this is what i don't understand, after i put my Laptop to sleep by pressing briefly on the power button, when i turn it on again, the DVD drive then opens after the long time i tried to open in while using Windows, i then login and the program.s that wouldn't open like Origin and iTunes would be opened after logon..
Windows Media Player also freezes when i use it to open music files and play as it is the default player, sometimes it plays the music but it won't let me pause or change volume, sometimes i won't play at all and it'd just freeze..
And sometimes when i try to restart, the system hangs and won't actually restart leaving me to hold down and press the power button to shut-down the system. I'm almost regretting upgrading to Windows 8..

Running Windows 8, the system boots into a user account without login.
The launcher seems to work, I can bring up the desktop. From the desktop I cannot launch any programs, other than a non-admin DOS window- but from there I can't launch any other non command.com EXE.
When I try and run any desktop app, the icon comes up and highlights for about 5-10 seconds, then goes back to normal. I can't even ht CTRL-ALT-DEL and run Task Manager. It just never comes up.
Logging out never gets me back to the login screen.
I can swap accounts- but the other account never gets logged in. Just waits forever (or, at least, a long time).
When I launch Metro apps, the splash comes up to the app... and that's it. I can CTRL-F4 it, and that's it.
Hitting F8 on boot doesn't do anything (no safe mode anymore?).

This issue has been happening for 2 days. I have Windows 8.1 in an Asus G46V. My anti-virus is Norton 360.When I logged into my computer, I got an error message saying that I could use the computer because I was administrator or something like that. It was the first time I had seen that in my life. I ignored it and I tried to launch Chrome. It took around 4 minutes to start, normally it takes 5 seconds. I didn't know what it was, so I looked at event viewer and I saw I had several errors of Service Control Manager, event ID 7000. Maybe it was related, I don't know. So far I have reinstalled Chrome and re-started my PC with no success.

All of a sudden many of my programs either won't launch or stops working right after launch.
I have no "reset" point that can fix this, and I have tried "sfc /scannow" (without having a clue what it does). After the sfc /scannow, the command prompt message said I had some corrupt files, and not all of them could be fixed automatically.
What can cause several programs to stop working all of a sudden, and what can possibly fix it?(Without re-installing Win 8 of course)

I have recently purchased and new computer with Windows 8. It's running smoothly, however I am encountering one particular problem.
My primary boot device is a 128GB SSD and obviously I want that space for the operating system install and some essential programs (photoshop, fireworks etc.).
My secondary device is a standard 1TB HDD. This is what I want to be my storage space for files, documents and non-essential programs.
The problem - Whenever I try to install a program to my second drive it comes up with the following error
"Error Writing to D:lahblahlahlah.xml. Verify that you have access to that directory"
I have check my permissions in the security tab and made sure that all the right check boxes are clicked. I have made sure to run the program as administrator and I've check to make sure that the directory is not set to 'read only'.

I am running Win 8.1 Pro x64. Today I noticed that the "Eject" option from the right-click menu doesn't work for either of my 2 CD-Rom drives, nor for a "virtual" drive - I get the same error message on all 3: "An error occured while ejecting [drive]".
Device Manager shows no errors, and I've tried uninstalling the drives and rebooting, but error persists.
Also, to be clear, it is NOT a physical problem with the drives, as I can open them without a problem through the buttons on the front.
Finally, if for some reason I can't fix this issue, any way to at least just DELETE the "Eject" from the context menu?

I'm running a Win 8 Pro x64 box, with Windows on C: and most of my Applications on D:
Is there any way to reinstall windows to C: without breaking my programs on D: ? I mean, a lot of the stuff will still work without any special tricks, but the things with hundreds of hard to find registry entries concern me.
Could I possibly reinstall to C: then run a repair installation for all the programs that reside on D:?

I have a retail version of Windows 8 pro. All updates have been applied. I have a 128g SSD and several SATA3 hard drives in my system. Often I'll be working on my PC and a program like photoshop or thunderbird or even explorer become unresponsive and greys out and sometimes if I wait long enough it comes back but only for a short while before it happens again.
Many times it will happen when I am accessing the file structure, i.e. file > open and other times it will happen in an explorer window when trying to access a random folder, i.e. I can browse the c:windows folder but not the c:windowssystem32, but after waiting a bit it shows up.
Sometimes this happens with other (non system) drives.
Also, when I try to open task mgr or event viewer or many built in OS executables I immediately get an error stating:
c:windowssystem32 askmgr.exe (or mmc.exe, etc.) The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion
A reboot fixes this problem, but only for a short while. It may even be that this only happens after coming back from sleep but I haven't spent enough time in front of the machine post-boot but pre-sleep to know for sure.
I have had some intermittent issues with coming back from sleep where either the monitors (video card is HD7870 and mobo is ASRock Z77 Pro 3 - firmware up to date) never initialize or I get the splash login screen but my usb keyboard doesn't recognize input to allow for the password prompt and the mouse cursor moves but clicking does nothing.
Does it sound like a mobo hardware issue with hybrid sleep? I like the hybrid sleep with my SSD for fast boot and wakes but I'm at a loss. Also, I had RTM before the retail version with all the same hardware and never had any of these issues.
One thought is maybe disconnecting a drive to see if its a bus issue where one drive is causing the others to become really slow reads/writes???
Oddly, my chrome browser never seems effected by this.I have also tried disabling my Avast AV s/w just to be sure it isn't that.

Up until today, whenever I had a USB flash drive connected and I wanted to remove it I would click the icon in the System tray for "Safely remove hardware and eject media" and then my drive letter would be shown and I'd click on it to safely remove it. I am running Windows 8.1 and today when I click on the icon to remove the USB flash, all I see are three dots which do nothing. Above the 3 dots ... is the normal Open Devices and Printers. how to get the drive letters to appear instead of the 3 dots?

Recently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.
I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.

Every time I boot up Windows 8.1 I get a RunDDL error. Now I have done some research to see what is causing all this , and apparently I had a malware on my computer , so the reason this error keeps popping out is because it's looking for the file that has been removed. Now my question to you is how can this be fixed. I have an image provided below with the error message.
UPDATE : I was able to solve it all I had to do was the following steps:
1.)Download CCleaner
2.) Run Cleaner
3.) Go To Tools > Start Up > Remove The File.

For whatever reason the SSD didn't have an EFI partition and Windows 8 wasn't installed on a GPT partition... So it didn't show up as bootable UEFI device.
Been fiddling around with it now for one day but didn't get it running. My notebook had a hardware defect... so I removed the SSD and sent it to the hardware service provider.
Yesterday I received the repaired notebook but I totally fail in setting up UEFI so it would boot from the SSD again (with my old Win installation).
When installing Win 8 it was probably all handled automatically.
But now I'm lost... There's a "Windows Boot Manager" entry in the UEFI but it points to the hard disc... and I can't select the SSD. (It's detected as Hard Disk 1 in the UEFi's info tab though)
There is a BOOTMGR file in the SSD's root.

I just installed Windows 8, everything was fine. Until I opened up Steam and launched a game. Every game that I launched using Steam did not load, it just froze and has a black screen then becomes Not Responding, so I had to End Task it. But if I launched the game by itself (without turning on Steam), then the game works fine.
I tried everything from reinstalling Steam, reinstalling the games, Verify game file cache, etc. None has worked so far.
I also tried all the latest Nvidia drivers from 326.80 Beta to those older ones.
My system spec:
Windows 8 Pro 64bit
i7 2600k
Asus Sabertooth Z77
Kingston 8gb Ram
GTX 780
Enermax 850W psu

I've added task manager to my scheduled tasks at logon. Everywhere I google, they say to put the /min or -minimized arguments in it to launch it minimized, except neither option works for me. Task Manager launches, but just sits there on my desktop.
Is there a new argument for minimized in Windows 8?

My old desktop (upstairs) and my laptop are both running Windows 7. I can very easily use remote desktop connection from my laptop to the upstairs computer. My new desktop (downstairs) runs Windows 8.1. I use a local login, not the Microsoft login. My user name and password are the same on all three computers, and all three are on the same home network.
When I launch remote desktop connection from the Windows 8 machine, and enter the name of the Windows 7 machine, along with my User name and password (same on all three computers), the Windows 7 screen (from the upstairs machine) appears along with "The user name or password is incorrect".

Being impossible to get my dial-up shortcut from the desktop onto the taskbar of my new Windows 8 laptop, I followed the tutorial to add Quick Launch toolbar to the taskbar, and successfully moved the shortcut tothere.
With Vista, XP etc, one click on Quick Launch toolbar shortcut icon would open this "Connect TPG" window shown below. You then just clicked <Dial> button to connect directly to the ISP.
(Note: TPG is the name of the ISP)
However, with my Windows 8, three mouse operations all over the screen are required to arrive at this window:
1. You click the Quick Launch shortcut icon and the Charms sidebar opens.
2. Then you have to select the ISP under the Connections header, which causes a <Connect> button to pop up.
3. Which when clicked finally brings you to the above "Connect TPG" window.
how to open this window directly from the Quick Launch toolbar or how to pin a shortcut to the taskbar to achieve the same outcome?
NB, pinning "Network Connections" shortcut to taskbar is not the answer, as you still then required to the go through the same 3 operations mentioned above.
For further info, the properties window of the dial-up shortcut is shown below.
The target string is: {BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

So, my desktops seem to have stopped launching after restarting my laptop. After logging in all I get is a black screen with no right-click available, no taskbar, nothing. I am able to open programs by CTL-ALT-DEL into Task Manager and opening the file manager. When I minimize opened programs they minimize them to the bottom-left corner of the blank screen.
I ran a system restart but that didn't do anything. I don't know if I've contracted malware or accidentally screwed up a setting, but all of this seemed to start right after the latest round of automatic updates.
