Desktop Fails To Launch After Restart
Mar 23, 2014
So, my desktops seem to have stopped launching after restarting my laptop. After logging in all I get is a black screen with no right-click available, no taskbar, nothing. I am able to open programs by CTL-ALT-DEL into Task Manager and opening the file manager. When I minimize opened programs they minimize them to the bottom-left corner of the blank screen.
I ran a system restart but that didn't do anything. I don't know if I've contracted malware or accidentally screwed up a setting, but all of this seemed to start right after the latest round of automatic updates.

New Dell XPS 8500 following installation of programs and an attempt at creating a image using the built-in imaging program now fails to restart or shutdown from the start screen. When I attempted to create an image I got a statement that "there is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location". I had 1.34 TB free on an external drive for an image calculated by Windows as 135.78 GB. After the image attempt the problems started. Today's session with Dell did not solve the problem. Their tech will call to walk me through reinstalling the system to the original state. I hope this is not a common Windows 8 problem.

I keep experiencing increasing memory usage by Windows Explorer. Most frequently when moving files, or if I use the "Open containing folder" for a file playing in Foobar. It takes several of these to amount to an actual increase but that's only a minor annoyance.
The real problem is that, after opening task manager and selecting to restart explorer, it quite frequently acts as if it has restarted (explorer.exe appearing in the program list), but does not actually load. No desktop, no icons, no start button (I use classic shell), no charms menu, and the windows button to return to the start screen does nothing. All I get is the system clock and the few icons next to it. The problem continues even if you continually restart, until it randomly corrects itself. Could take 1 additional restart, could take 15-20.
This is majorly problematic and annoying, google turns up nothing, and I'm honestly starting to wonder if there's just something wrong with my computer. There's already a hardware problem in that my webcam has an internal disconnect and the display itself has vertical lines randomly appearing, which I am settling with HP, but there are no other noticeable problems.

I'm having a rather annoying issue on Windows 8 with my ASUS Laptop.
When moving from Wi-Fi to Ethernet (disable Wi-Fi, plug-in Ethernet cable then enable Ethernet port) my computer fails to recognize the Ethernet connection. I have to restart my computer to solve the problem.
Is this intentional or is something going wrong?

I finally got Windows 8 installed on my Dell M4600 dual boot with the Win 7 install. This is my business laptop so I needed to maintain full functions to Win 7 (I will completely migrate to 8 in the future) and ensure I could continue to work with it. I have two SSDs: Drive 0 is a 2.5" 256 GB used for data as d:. Drive 1 (this is how the bios designates them) was originally a 128GB MSATA SSD. I cloned this to a newer 240GB SSD to provide more room for the two OSs (and provide a good fail safe). With the clone I cleared the Dell recovery partitions and added the partition for Win 8. Currently I have some wasted space at the front but I will sort that out in the future. It has taken a week to get Win 8 up and running properly (tracking down drivers, getting the fingerprint scanner to work etc) but it seems to be stable and I have started to use it. Now to the problems:
1. The boot screen is the old Win 7 type (not really a problem by itself). I have used EasyBCD to adjust the default to Win 8. If I do a "restart" from 8 and then select 7 no problem. On the other hand, any restart to 8 brings up the MS flag and twirling thing and stops. I need to power down and start back up. No problem if I shutdown and then restart. I've been working on figuring out how the whole process works and I suspect the problem has to do with the switching drive letters depending on which OS is started and/or the Resume parameters in the BCD. Additionally, during all the hassle with installing Win 8 the boot loader is on the Win 7 partition. I'm hesitant to start using BCDedit on this laptop as I would prefer not to mess anything up. I also will not go through the hassle of re-installing Win 8 again - 3 or 4 times was enough.
2. At some point I will delete the Win 7 partition and expand the space for the Win 8 (I'll need to use some third party tools to do this). My concern is that the boot loader is on the Win 7 partition so how to move it to the Win 8 partition if possible.
I've attached two screen shots for the disk management status (win 7 an 8) and attachedoutput form BCDedit /enum all for both OSs.

I recently bought Dell Inspiron with i5 4th generation and preloaded Win 8 on it.
I upgraded it to Win 8.1. Am trying to login to my works station through IE11. am able to successfully login to web vpn website and when i try to give my IP and hit submit,
Java tries to load for a brief moment and am getting a message.
Error: click here for more details in a split window.
However am able to launch remote desktop using IE8 from my XP box. IE11 does not support.
1) make remote desktop work on IE11 or
2) in installing IE8 on Win 8.1
Stuff tried so for, for making it work:
-uninstalled IE11 and tried installing IE8 (failed) IE9 (it says already installed though it is not)
-tried developer tool and changed browser mode to IE8 ( internet stopped working- unable to load any page from internet.)

My old desktop (upstairs) and my laptop are both running Windows 7. I can very easily use remote desktop connection from my laptop to the upstairs computer. My new desktop (downstairs) runs Windows 8.1. I use a local login, not the Microsoft login. My user name and password are the same on all three computers, and all three are on the same home network.
When I launch remote desktop connection from the Windows 8 machine, and enter the name of the Windows 7 machine, along with my User name and password (same on all three computers), the Windows 7 screen (from the upstairs machine) appears along with "The user name or password is incorrect".

Network on my Lenovo Yoga running Windows 8.1 works fine over both wireless and Ethernet (USB dongle).
I have an iMac initiating a Remote Desktop connection to the Yoga via a direct Ethernet cable between the devices. Everything works fine on the Windows 8.1 device except the WiFi can no longer connect to any access points and thus the Yoga has no Internet/network access--it just fails immediately when I select an access point for connection.
I do see an Event ID 8000 from NETwNe64 around the time of this failure; not sure if it's the same cause.
If I log back into the Yoga (and thus break the Remote Desktop Ethernet connection and take over that session), wireless works perfectly again. Thus it is clear that WiFi is only down when the device is accessed via RDP over Ethernet.

On booting up 8.1, lenovo z410, the first few attempts to use IE11 from the desktop fail. "cannot open page". Connection troubleshooter produces nothing.
go to APPS > IE and it works fine.
After using chrome and the tile app for awhile, IE11-Desktop will gain coherency and start working. Is there a way to reinstall the desktop side?
this is a clean install with little/nothing loaded on it, about to be deployed for real work so its important.

Prior to this issue I had not installed anything all week nor made any updates, etc. I boot up windows as always and noticed that upon logging in, my lock screen took a while longer to bring me to my desktop. Now my desktop is completely black and my taskbar icons are gone. Opening firefox or any other program through the start menu does NOT make them show up on the taskbar as they always would. My desktop's pretty much disabled. Here's a screenshot.
I would be fine resetting to factory settings, however when it says my computer must restart to enter recovery mode, my computer in the middle of the restart gives me a light blue screen that says Windows encountered a problem and my system must restart. That is cancelling my recovery mode boot and sending me back to my black desktop.

Every time I boot up Windows 8.1 I get a RunDDL error. Now I have done some research to see what is causing all this , and apparently I had a malware on my computer , so the reason this error keeps popping out is because it's looking for the file that has been removed. Now my question to you is how can this be fixed. I have an image provided below with the error message.
UPDATE : I was able to solve it all I had to do was the following steps:
1.)Download CCleaner
2.) Run Cleaner
3.) Go To Tools > Start Up > Remove The File.

For whatever reason the SSD didn't have an EFI partition and Windows 8 wasn't installed on a GPT partition... So it didn't show up as bootable UEFI device.
Been fiddling around with it now for one day but didn't get it running. My notebook had a hardware defect... so I removed the SSD and sent it to the hardware service provider.
Yesterday I received the repaired notebook but I totally fail in setting up UEFI so it would boot from the SSD again (with my old Win installation).
When installing Win 8 it was probably all handled automatically.
But now I'm lost... There's a "Windows Boot Manager" entry in the UEFI but it points to the hard disc... and I can't select the SSD. (It's detected as Hard Disk 1 in the UEFi's info tab though)
There is a BOOTMGR file in the SSD's root.

I uninstalled my mcafee A/V a while ago and instead I installed kaspersky antivirus. I use my laptop for gaming and never had a problem with that until i used kaspersky.
It now takes 2-3 minutes to start a game, during this time the laptop slows down a lot, and when i check my task manager it says that kaspersky is taking almost 100% of disk space. when the game finally starts everything goes back to normal.
Is there a way to fix this without uninstalling kaspersky?

I have an XP style Quick Launch bar on my taskbar.* Every once in awhile, such as this morning, it disappears on startup and Sys Restore doesn't bring it back. It's located via %appdata%MicrosoftInternet Explorer and there's already a Quick Launch folder. Short of recreating it, is there a quick way to bring the whole thing back in one piece?
*Bring back Windows XP Quick Launch in Windows 7Being PC | Being PC
Update: Strange. I created a new Quick Launch toolbar, got rid of show text and show title, and all the links were there to be dragged to the left, only in alphabetical order, per the folder list. So problem solved, something learned. Though not sure why it disappears every so often.

Every time I connect my camera to the USB, the Photo App automatically launches and it is driving me nuts. I wouldn't mind using the Photo App but it doesn't give me any option to delete the photos once transferred. I am aware I can right click the device in My PC and Import that way, (like the Windows 7 of old), but the App still opens forcing me to close the screen! I've clicked on the Default setting for Photos and chose Do nothing but the photo App still automatically launches!!! What can I do? I just want the Windows 7 method of importing.

I installed Windows 8 on my laptop like 5 days ago, everyone worked fine and dandy there but somehow now most of my programs won't launch but i can see it in Task Manager, my DVD drive won't open when i try to eject it physically, when i try to right click and eject it in My Computer, it freezes immediately and doesn't recover so i'd have to end it via TM.
But this is what i don't understand, after i put my Laptop to sleep by pressing briefly on the power button, when i turn it on again, the DVD drive then opens after the long time i tried to open in while using Windows, i then login and the program.s that wouldn't open like Origin and iTunes would be opened after logon..
Windows Media Player also freezes when i use it to open music files and play as it is the default player, sometimes it plays the music but it won't let me pause or change volume, sometimes i won't play at all and it'd just freeze..
And sometimes when i try to restart, the system hangs and won't actually restart leaving me to hold down and press the power button to shut-down the system. I'm almost regretting upgrading to Windows 8..

I just installed Windows 8, everything was fine. Until I opened up Steam and launched a game. Every game that I launched using Steam did not load, it just froze and has a black screen then becomes Not Responding, so I had to End Task it. But if I launched the game by itself (without turning on Steam), then the game works fine.
I tried everything from reinstalling Steam, reinstalling the games, Verify game file cache, etc. None has worked so far.
I also tried all the latest Nvidia drivers from 326.80 Beta to those older ones.
My system spec:
Windows 8 Pro 64bit
i7 2600k
Asus Sabertooth Z77
Kingston 8gb Ram
GTX 780
Enermax 850W psu

Running Windows 8, the system boots into a user account without login.
The launcher seems to work, I can bring up the desktop. From the desktop I cannot launch any programs, other than a non-admin DOS window- but from there I can't launch any other non command.com EXE.
When I try and run any desktop app, the icon comes up and highlights for about 5-10 seconds, then goes back to normal. I can't even ht CTRL-ALT-DEL and run Task Manager. It just never comes up.
Logging out never gets me back to the login screen.
I can swap accounts- but the other account never gets logged in. Just waits forever (or, at least, a long time).
When I launch Metro apps, the splash comes up to the app... and that's it. I can CTRL-F4 it, and that's it.
Hitting F8 on boot doesn't do anything (no safe mode anymore?).
