Could there be a way to make the task menu launch from the startmenu to be a big square like skype is "phone eddition"
This would be useful because when im in games and the game freezes, i can bring up the start menu like SUPER FAST and it is visible but when i launch the task manager it is behind the game no matter what, so im always pressing the key stroke of the first letter of the game and pressing delete to see if i closed the game or not.
My PC takes its sweet time to boot given the specs it has. (around 1.75 mins) Especially the "black" part seems to take so long. I've fastboot enabled and I use UEFI. how to make the PC boot faster ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have setup Windows 8.1 so it boots directly into the old Windows 7 desktop interface and that works fine for me.
Since I never have any use for the app desktop, is it possible to avoid that desktop from even loading so as to make the boot faster?
I have over 600 GB on my HDD from games, media, and files. I bought a 250GB SSD to boot my OS off of and put some selected programs on. Even after deselecting all my media files, there is still too much on my HDD for the included Samsung clone client to proceed. I just want to use my new SSD as a boot drive for the OS and for several programs while retaining all my other files on my existing HDD.

Working on desktop, when I right click the drive in File Explorer, I can open AutoPlay and select an action. But after doing so, then removing and reinserting the card or drive, nothing happens.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEvery time I boot up Windows 8.1 I get a RunDDL error. Now I have done some research to see what is causing all this , and apparently I had a malware on my computer , so the reason this error keeps popping out is because it's looking for the file that has been removed. Now my question to you is how can this be fixed. I have an image provided below with the error message.
UPDATE : I was able to solve it all I had to do was the following steps:
1.)Download CCleaner
2.) Run Cleaner
3.) Go To Tools > Start Up > Remove The File.
For whatever reason the SSD didn't have an EFI partition and Windows 8 wasn't installed on a GPT partition... So it didn't show up as bootable UEFI device.
Been fiddling around with it now for one day but didn't get it running. My notebook had a hardware defect... so I removed the SSD and sent it to the hardware service provider.
Yesterday I received the repaired notebook but I totally fail in setting up UEFI so it would boot from the SSD again (with my old Win installation).
When installing Win 8 it was probably all handled automatically.
But now I'm lost... There's a "Windows Boot Manager" entry in the UEFI but it points to the hard disc... and I can't select the SSD. (It's detected as Hard Disk 1 in the UEFi's info tab though)
There is a BOOTMGR file in the SSD's root.
So, my desktops seem to have stopped launching after restarting my laptop. After logging in all I get is a black screen with no right-click available, no taskbar, nothing. I am able to open programs by CTL-ALT-DEL into Task Manager and opening the file manager. When I minimize opened programs they minimize them to the bottom-left corner of the blank screen.
I ran a system restart but that didn't do anything. I don't know if I've contracted malware or accidentally screwed up a setting, but all of this seemed to start right after the latest round of automatic updates.
I just got an HP 2000 laptop and when installing adobe photo deluxe I got a message:" Not enough memory (ram) to launch this program". I checked and I have in windows (C 443GB and 401GB free. In Recovery (D I have 21.9GB and only 2.1GB free. I've never ran into anything like this before but it seems that everything I'm installing is going into D: drive.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently bought Dell Inspiron with i5 4th generation and preloaded Win 8 on it.
I upgraded it to Win 8.1. Am trying to login to my works station through IE11. am able to successfully login to web vpn website and when i try to give my IP and hit submit,
Java tries to load for a brief moment and am getting a message.
Error: click here for more details in a split window.
However am able to launch remote desktop using IE8 from my XP box. IE11 does not support.
1) make remote desktop work on IE11 or
2) in installing IE8 on Win 8.1
Stuff tried so for, for making it work:
-uninstalled IE11 and tried installing IE8 (failed) IE9 (it says already installed though it is not)
-tried developer tool and changed browser mode to IE8 ( internet stopped working- unable to load any page from internet.)
this is my Desktop at the moment and I have optimized Quick Launch on the task bar as I like
How can I backup my Quick launch Task bar? If I format my Win 8 and reinstall Win 8 I want back my Quick launch. another Problem, is there a way to set Live Mail into the tray?
I click on them but they won't launch. A blank grey screen appears after trying to launch them. Words near the bottom of tile say "Microsoft.WindowsLive.Mail", "Microsoft.WindowsLive.Calendar" and "Microsoft.WindowsLive.People".
View 4 Replies View RelatedI uninstalled my mcafee A/V a while ago and instead I installed kaspersky antivirus. I use my laptop for gaming and never had a problem with that until i used kaspersky.
It now takes 2-3 minutes to start a game, during this time the laptop slows down a lot, and when i check my task manager it says that kaspersky is taking almost 100% of disk space. when the game finally starts everything goes back to normal.
Is there a way to fix this without uninstalling kaspersky?
When i launch certain programs in windows desktop they close after a second (or less). I noticed that if i run them with administrator mode they run normally.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an XP style Quick Launch bar on my taskbar.* Every once in awhile, such as this morning, it disappears on startup and Sys Restore doesn't bring it back. It's located via %appdata%MicrosoftInternet Explorer and there's already a Quick Launch folder. Short of recreating it, is there a quick way to bring the whole thing back in one piece?
*Bring back Windows XP Quick Launch in Windows 7Being PC | Being PC
Update: Strange. I created a new Quick Launch toolbar, got rid of show text and show title, and all the links were there to be dragged to the left, only in alphabetical order, per the folder list. So problem solved, something learned. Though not sure why it disappears every so often.
Every time I connect my camera to the USB, the Photo App automatically launches and it is driving me nuts. I wouldn't mind using the Photo App but it doesn't give me any option to delete the photos once transferred. I am aware I can right click the device in My PC and Import that way, (like the Windows 7 of old), but the App still opens forcing me to close the screen! I've clicked on the Default setting for Photos and chose Do nothing but the photo App still automatically launches!!! What can I do? I just want the Windows 7 method of importing.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Windows 8 on my laptop like 5 days ago, everyone worked fine and dandy there but somehow now most of my programs won't launch but i can see it in Task Manager, my DVD drive won't open when i try to eject it physically, when i try to right click and eject it in My Computer, it freezes immediately and doesn't recover so i'd have to end it via TM.
But this is what i don't understand, after i put my Laptop to sleep by pressing briefly on the power button, when i turn it on again, the DVD drive then opens after the long time i tried to open in while using Windows, i then login and the program.s that wouldn't open like Origin and iTunes would be opened after logon..
Windows Media Player also freezes when i use it to open music files and play as it is the default player, sometimes it plays the music but it won't let me pause or change volume, sometimes i won't play at all and it'd just freeze..
And sometimes when i try to restart, the system hangs and won't actually restart leaving me to hold down and press the power button to shut-down the system. I'm almost regretting upgrading to Windows 8..
I just installed Windows 8, everything was fine. Until I opened up Steam and launched a game. Every game that I launched using Steam did not load, it just froze and has a black screen then becomes Not Responding, so I had to End Task it. But if I launched the game by itself (without turning on Steam), then the game works fine.
I tried everything from reinstalling Steam, reinstalling the games, Verify game file cache, etc. None has worked so far.
I also tried all the latest Nvidia drivers from 326.80 Beta to those older ones.
My system spec:
Windows 8 Pro 64bit
i7 2600k
Asus Sabertooth Z77
Kingston 8gb Ram
GTX 780
Enermax 850W psu
Some of my applications launch smaller than others. As seen in the picture the blackberry link is normal sized and the aio remote and the bitdefender are both much smaller.

View 8 Replies View RelatedRunning Windows 8, the system boots into a user account without login.
The launcher seems to work, I can bring up the desktop. From the desktop I cannot launch any programs, other than a non-admin DOS window- but from there I can't launch any other non command.com EXE.
When I try and run any desktop app, the icon comes up and highlights for about 5-10 seconds, then goes back to normal. I can't even ht CTRL-ALT-DEL and run Task Manager. It just never comes up.
Logging out never gets me back to the login screen.
I can swap accounts- but the other account never gets logged in. Just waits forever (or, at least, a long time).
When I launch Metro apps, the splash comes up to the app... and that's it. I can CTRL-F4 it, and that's it.
Hitting F8 on boot doesn't do anything (no safe mode anymore?).
I update my PC on Windows 8.1 six month before, I works without any problems. And from two week ago I got a BSOD at each launch of my computer, I just need to shutdown him and it start normally but it took almost ten time longer.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThis was working until today. Now, if I right click my Word or Excel icon on the task bar, I see my pinned and recently accessed files, but if I click to open (or right click and then click open) the following happens - the menu goes greyed out for slightly less than a second, then the entire task bar disappears for a second, then the notification icons reappear, and half a second later the task bar icons reappear, but no files open. The icon itself works, to open the program, it's just the files which will not open. It only seems to Office which is affected.
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy problem is that I want to install a higher version of win 8, respectivily win 8 pro in a computer that already came with another version of win preinstalled (win 8.1). It's possible to do this in a bios that prevents csm launch.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis issue has been happening for 2 days. I have Windows 8.1 in an Asus G46V. My anti-virus is Norton 360.When I logged into my computer, I got an error message saying that I could use the computer because I was administrator or something like that. It was the first time I had seen that in my life. I ignored it and I tried to launch Chrome. It took around 4 minutes to start, normally it takes 5 seconds. I didn't know what it was, so I looked at event viewer and I saw I had several errors of Service Control Manager, event ID 7000. Maybe it was related, I don't know. So far I have reinstalled Chrome and re-started my PC with no success.

Notification on logon:
I want to launch the Windows Store Control Panel in Windows 8 from Desktop command line, i know the EXE file is
"C:WindowsImmersiveControlPanelSystemSettings.exe".
What I am asking for is a request to manually size the icons in the QuickLaunch toolbar. I do not want a suggestion that states an alternative way for viewing my icons (for example, pinning programs or what-not).
I am asking to see if there is a registry tweak that manually sets the size of the icons in the QuickLaunch toolbar (refer to the image). They are a bit small, and want to slightly increase their sizes.
All of a sudden many of my programs either won't launch or stops working right after launch.
I have no "reset" point that can fix this, and I have tried "sfc /scannow" (without having a clue what it does). After the sfc /scannow, the command prompt message said I had some corrupt files, and not all of them could be fixed automatically.
What can cause several programs to stop working all of a sudden, and what can possibly fix it?(Without re-installing Win 8 of course)
