I click on them but they won't launch. A blank grey screen appears after trying to launch them. Words near the bottom of tile say "Microsoft.WindowsLive.Mail", "Microsoft.WindowsLive.Calendar" and "Microsoft.WindowsLive.People".

Now, if I right click my Word or Excel icon on the task bar, I see my pinned and recently accessed files, but if I click to open (or right click and then click open) the following happens - the menu goes greyed out for slightly less than a second, then the entire task bar disappears for a second, then the notification icons reappear, and half a second later the task bar icons reappear, but no files open. The icon itself works, to open the program, it's just the files which will not open. It only seems to Office which is affected.

View 9 Replies View Relatedhaving installed and configured all the software I need, I felt almost ready and relieved to finally create a backup image of my system. However, I have just realised that most built-in Metro Apps have stopped working.
In detail, Weather, Maps, Mail, Skype, Calendar, Contact, Stocks (and probably few more) do not work, i.e., when I click-open them, there is the short animation in which the App symbol is magnified to full screen, and then immediately afterwards I am sent back to the Metro interface. However, the apps do still appear in the Metro Apps' taskbar on the left side of the screen. Re-Opening them from there leads gives the same result.
Very few apps work, like Skydrive, Photos and Store.
I can confirm that I neither had this issue with Windows 8 nor right after my Windows 8.1 installation, which is when I checked Metro apps for the last time.
What settings in the meantime have caused this disruption, I can only say that I have not done any real work with the computer since the fresh install but merely installed and configured everything to my specifications.
Just for the sake of ruling out some possible causes, I can confirm that: I have no third-party firewall or antivirus programs installed; that I have no nvidia or ATI/AMD graphics card, just the Intel HD 4000 onboard graphics; and that I use the most recent drivers everywhere.
I have already read Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter - Fix Apps in Windows 8 and gone through most of the points, except the refresh install, which I would like to avoid since this is a newly installed computer.
The following errors are reported in the application event log of Windows:
1) Event id 10: "Fehler beim Laden der Anwendungseinstellungen for Paket "Microsoft.BingMaps_8wekyb3d8bbwe". Fehlercode: 5" This is the original German message, translated to english this means:
"Error loading applications settings for package "...". Error code: 5"
I get this type of error for every app I launch, and a few more errors like:

So on my dad's notebook, an ASUS K55N, all of the sudden, all of the Modern UI apps stopped working, every time he clicks on one he gets a message saying "This App Can't Open", and all he did was run Windows Update this morning (he downloaded SP1 for Office, the big Update was installed yesterday, and he could use these Apps with no problem).

View 7 Replies View RelatedEvery time I connect my camera to the USB, the Photo App automatically launches and it is driving me nuts. I wouldn't mind using the Photo App but it doesn't give me any option to delete the photos once transferred. I am aware I can right click the device in My PC and Import that way, (like the Windows 7 of old), but the App still opens forcing me to close the screen! I've clicked on the Default setting for Photos and chose Do nothing but the photo App still automatically launches!!! What can I do? I just want the Windows 7 method of importing.

I have no "reset" point that can fix this, and I have tried "sfc /scannow" (without having a clue what it does). After the sfc /scannow, the command prompt message said I had some corrupt files, and not all of them could be fixed automatically.
What can cause several programs to stop working all of a sudden, and what can possibly fix it?(Without re-installing Win 8 of course)
I have noticed that applications that are launched from the Metro IU load and run much faster than the same applications launched from IE under desktop. I have even created Metro tiles for applications I normally run as they load and run much faster than launching them from the desktop. This site (Windows Eight Forms) would not load from desktop IE but loads immediately from a Metro tile I created.

It took some time to put together the partitions and programs I wanted to install on my new SSD and set up the external storage drive with my old hard drive, but it was totally worth the effort. I love the operating system and how it works with my desktop and hardware. It boots quickly, the themes are aesthetically pleasing, and access to everything is far easier to navigate.
However, I do have some issues with the Metro Menu / Applications. I have downloaded several applications, notably Twitter and Skype. Those two applications have been snapped into the left side of my screen. While they are useful and important to me, what troubles me is that I don't have a copy / cut function for either application.
Is there a way to add that feature to both applications? I would much rather avoid the clutter of a desktop Skype program or view Twitter via Google Chrome.
I just did a fresh install of 8.1 pro on my computer with an SSD. When i click the start button and use the apps window(not metro) to launch desktop programs they load extremely slow. The start menu doesn't even close on its own when i click to launch a program either i have to manually close it then a few seconds later the program will launch. When i open the program from explorer it loads instantly but for whatever reason doing anything through the new start menu is extremely slow.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMaybe it's just me that this annoys but i hope there is a setting that can be changed to fix it. In Windows 8/8.1 if you try to open an app that is already open it does nothing.
Example:
1. Click start >> Type MSTSC >> Press Enter and connect to a remote computer/server.
2. Do the same again (not on the remote computer/server) >> you will notice after hitting Enter that it doesn't open the Remote Desktop dialogue.
It will either go back to the desktop or open the original remote connection. It is the same with any application (Excel, Word...)
It didn't work that way in 7, it would open a new instance of that application is there any way to change this?

There are some programs that when I install them appear to hang when they're most of the way through the install. A current example is Hotspot Shield.
I've unregistered and reregistered MSIexec, to no effect. I've run sfg/scannow and the system integrity is 100%. When I check the process it appears to be doing something, though so trivial as to be barely worth recording, so I have to assume it's not hung, unless it's marking time. It's certainly not waiting on a write queue.
I have build my Windows 8.1 machine recently. And I have installed multiple applications such as Adobe Acrobat Readers, and MS Office on it.
I have a strange problem happening when I restarted my PC this morning. All application that I installed have completely disappeared. I cant even find them in Control Panel under Programs and Application.
The computer instead of asking me to login using my live account, asked me to login as local user this morning, and when I login again using Live Account, ALL installed APPS are gone and machine went back to out-of-box stage.
I uninstalled google talk from control panel (uninstall a program) however I can still see Google Talk application group (with all icons) in the All apps screen. I also checked C:UsersuserAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart Menu Programs but couldn't find leftovers there.

I've searched the internet extensively for information on how to create an app for my windows 8 computer, but haven't found diddly squat. I see self-made apps in the store, but none of them are what I'm looking for so I decided to try and make my own. It's purely informational, with lists and links between pages inside the app.So how do I make an application?
Preferably, I'd like do it all with free stuff, because if I had the money to buy software, I'd just buy a smartphone and make an app for that. But the app I want to make is literally just a bunch of informational pages linking between each other for easy navigation. Like a PowerPoint, but as an app.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI usually reboot my computer once to three times a year. Every time I reboot my computer and reinstall windows 8 and then resign in with my Microsoft I.D. that I use for my computer it never remembers or syncs the apps that I have downloaded from the Microsoft Store app.
My question is, are any of the apps that I download or purchase from the Microsoft Store app remembered, stored or synced with the Microsoft Store in the cloud etc or do I have to redownload everything again and again and again every time I reinstall windows 8?
Attempted to update to 8.1 yesterday and the store just won't open. Every time I click on the Store tile it doesn't get past the green introductory screen before just disappearing (crashing).. Have restarted several times and used the link-through on the Windows 8.1 site. Also, I have since discovered that all apps won't open either (such as news and sports).

Win 8 fails to load 2 apps on initial start up. Razr Game Booster and Acronis Scheduler.If I do an immediate Re Start both apps will load correctly. SFC tells me no problems. Event log says Acronis failed to start, nothing listed for Razr app.

I go to access an item in windows explorer or say device manager and get a message system could not access or may not have permission. Most programs seem to be working, but a lot of services are not such as WiFi, sound, network etc. since I cannot access win32 applications I can not get into services.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI can not run the Windows Store apps after I updated my new laptop from Win 8 to 8.1. None of the Metro apps can be executed anymore. Each app will begin the run process, but the Metro UI returns after couple of seconds after the execution attempt. I do not get any error messages.
I have read earlier message threads concerning the issue and tried to solve it by following the instructions given by the specialists, but so far none of those instructions have solved the problem.

1) checked that I have admin rights
2) checked that my account is a Windows Live account (not a local one)
2) disabled my virus software (McAfee, I have not found Avast in my computer)
3) run the The Windows apps troubleshooter. It indicates that I may not have up-to-date graphics card drivers - I have downloaded the final version from the manufacturer's home page (Acer) (and also from NVIDIA pages)
4) checked that my dispaly resolution is high enough (1900 x 1080)
I have not
1) unistalled and reinstalled the apps, beacuse I can not run the Store, in where the uninstallation and the reinstallation would take place
I tried downloading various apps from the store, but the message I get was I can't install this app.For example, I tried to install PDF Reader 8, and I get error code 0x80070032. Does the error code reveal what the problem is? I am running Windows 8, not Windows 8.1, on the Lenovo IdeaPad.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI can only run apps when NOT connected to the internet. Only pre installed apps becauce I can't download new ones. When connected to the internet I can use a browser, use email and go to the apps store. If I try to run any apps they try to open up and then I get the message "Can't log into Xbox" or something like that. I DON'T HAVE AN XBOX. Why do microsoft assume everyone owns all of their products. I have uninstalled everything mention of Xbox but this get the same problem.
I tried to download an app - three days later it was still trying. I just get a blank square on the home screen with some dots scrolling along the bottom of the box. I have tried various apps and nothing ever downloads.
