I have been using windows 8 from past many months, recently I updated my windows to windows 8.1. But due to compatibility issues with some software I had to refresh my windows back to windows 8. Since then, the PC settings icon is greyed out. I am not able to access any settings of my PC. I have attached the screenshot of the same.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIE opens, but doesn't function properly, won't display web pages and the settings are all greyed out. running 8.1 Pro with Media Center 64 bit. Ran SFC/Scan, but got the error that it found corrupt files but couldn't repair them. Then I couldn't find the file cbs.log to see. I also turned off IE11 rebooted and turned it on then rebooted with the same result. I did have a virus (which I can't remember the name). that is gone but now this.

I can't seem to get Secure Boot enabled on my laptop, the secure boot option is greyed out and I can't change it to enabled, my computer came with windows 8 on it automatically so I thought it would've been enabled by default.

I do not have touch screen so all my taps are with a mouse. When I open the gear icon on the charms bar all is ok and all choices are shown. The only one that doesnt work is "Change PC Settings". When I click on it nothing happens except a small jump of the screen.

I am currently trying to change UAC, but if I click on Change User Account Control Settings, nothing happens. Same thing if I click any of the links with the admin shield next to it. My account says local account administrator and I have installed programs as administrator just fine. I have also tried the .reg files posted, but it didn't seem to do anything.

I got tired of it sleeping & changed the sleep setting to "Never".
It still went to sleep after 2 hours.
So I checked in advanced settings & found that "hybrid sleep" was turned on.I shut it off & my computer quit going to sleep.
i'm wondering how to change my language preference. i've followed the guides on Input Method - Set Default Language in Windows 8 yet i'm still having troubles.
when i install my windows 8 this afternoon i set my location into indonesia. so all of my settings was in bahasa. i've done as the guide said but in my "START", things like Music, Weather, Pictures and some others are still in their bahasa language. while others like Maps and Computers are already changed into English.
I'm not on high contrast theme. Everything show it's color as it should be but only on the settings page it's mostly black and I can't do the setting..
View 1 Replies View RelatedEver since upgrading to Windows 8.1 I haven't been able to change my update settings. The drop-down is greyed out and can't be clicked on. Above the drop down it says "Some settings are managed by your system administrator"
I've deleted my user account and created a new one, but the problem remains. I've unlocked the Administrator account, but even through that account the settings can't be changed. I'm not in a homegroup, as I've heard this could solve the problem and I've disconnected and reconnected my Microsoft account to my User Account to no avail.
Windows keeps updating and I don't have the bandwidth to continue this way.
Using the keyboard hurts my workflow, like to know if this could be done.

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy computer is so messed up Version 8.1 . I first noticed that I had a problem with Kaspersky. It said my license was unable to verify and to update data base to solve. It wont let me update. In fact it wont even let me uninstall, and secondly I cant download ANYTHING off the internet. My main problem is OFFICE keeps freezing and I need that program it also says there is a problem with my license and I have not been able to fix it it just freezes. So I thought I will download open office, but as I mentioned I cant download anything when I click run nothing happens when I click save it says corrupt or unreadable file. I thought no problem I will just hit F2 (yes I have tried hitting every single key after this and nothing) and enter bios screen and recover from my USB but do you think F2 (or any other key takes takes me there, no. Products like Kaspersky, Office, I have paid for etc say they are unlicensed which they are not. Anything I try to download, anything, like a new virus program will not work. I can't download, I cant even get into Change my PC settings it just freezes when I click this. I have had people try and trouble shoot this, Kaspersky has not gotten back to me and everyone is telling me stuff I cant do. I cant download, I cant access bios, I cant even access Change my PC settings. Ready to hear all the generic "it should" or "you should be able to"
View 9 Replies View Related I'm an IT pro and I'm in the process of creating Windows 8 Pro (64-bit) images for my workplace using audit mode (i have done this countless times on windows 7). The problem is, the 'Change PC settings' button does NOT work when I click on it in audit mode. Nothing happens at all, the charms bar just slides away as it should, and then....nothing.
Heres what I'm doing:
1. Installing Windows 8 using our (MAK) dvd on my base image PC (Dell Optiplex 780). This is a CLEAN install on a wiped hard disk using verified installation media.
2. I Press Ctrl-SHift-F3 at the 'Personalize' screen to launch audit mode
3. The system logs in as it should with the built-in admin account
At this stage, Windows is not yet activated. The change PC settings button does not work.
I then:
4. Activate Windows 8 using the 'slui 3' command to input my volume product key. This activates OK.
5. I reboot to complete activation
6. I verify in system settings that windows IS activated.
The 'change pc settings' button still does not respond at this stage (nothing happens at all, no errors etc). And this is with ZERO changes to the PC.
Attempted Workarounds
For the record, I have tried countless things in a bid to fix this, including but not limited to:
* put the resolution to 1024x768 (as some forums recommended) - 'change PC settings' still not working.
* installing ALL available windows updates (before activation, after activation etc) - 'change PC settings' still not working.
* updated the PC bios and tried again - 'change PC settings' still not working.
* I have created new local accounts (admin and non admin) just to test it using the new accounts, and that doesnt work either.
* I have wiped the disk and attempted complete wipe and reinstalls countless times (and on 3 different models of PC), with the same result. 'change PC settings' still not working.
* tried countless possible fixes found in forums all over the web - none of which worked.
I have done all this and more, countless times, and in countless different orders to try and beat this thing, but to no avail.

Examples where I see the windows busy circle:
1. I right-click on the recycle bin icon2. If I right-click on the recycle bin I get the busy icon. For a few minutes, I get the busy icon if I hover over the recycle bin. Eventually, things seem to go back to pre-busy state in that I don't get the busy icon, but the right-click menu never appears. I get a busy icon for the recycle bin even if I shut down browsers, etc.
2. right-click on the time and date in the lower-right portion of the screen, in an attempt to launch Task Manager. If instead I do CTRL-ALT-DEL I get launch Task manager immediately.
Maybe related: if I bring up Control Panel - System Properties - System Protection, the 'Protection Settings' table says:
"Available Devices
Searing"
forever.
The System Restore button is grayed out.
Occasionally, I get the busy icon in other cases, but I have yet to find it repeatable.
When I get the busy icon, it is only on the application mentioned, above. I can generally operate a (3rd party) browser with no problems.
Task Manager reports the sort of numbers I'm used to seeing when things are running normally:
1. ~50% CPU usage (due to browser).
2. ~25% memory usage
3. 25% disk usage
4. 0% network usage
I now have gotten things into a mode where the desktop is semi grayed out and shows the busy icon if I hover the mouse over the desktop. Also, I get the busy icon if I hover over the 3rd party Start button or any of the app buttons on the task bar (this is the bar just to the right of the Start button; I hope I'm using the right term).
I setup a Lock Screen picture through PC Settings/Personalize in Windows 8 last week on my laptop and it synced perfectly to my desktop as well. But yesterday I noticed my lock screen picture was not active when I opened my laptop it went straight to my picture password.
The lock screen picture still is functional on my desktop when it awakes from sleep or a test lock. But it refuses to show up when my laptop comes up from sleep/lock. So I went into my laptop PC Settings under Personalize and it is showing this screen.
I cannot access any Group Policy stuff on my laptop since it is using Windows 8 (Home). But my desktop is using Windows 8 Pro (w/ Media Center). Both of my copies of Windows are already activated and I use my Microsoft Account to log on to both so everything will sync correctly.
*Edit* All of my Group Policy information on my desktop is set to "Not Configured" so it shouldn't conflict with any prevention of settings on my laptop.
I really like Windows 8 and this problem is a little silly and I'd like to correct it!
I just bought a new HP computer. Came with 8.1 and IE 11. Recently had windows XP pro, worked fine but needed to get a new machine. Anyway, lost outlook express, took a while to figure out to add windows live mail and set it as default, so now the "icon" in IE 11 works. Yahoo mail is my main guy but couldn't get it to set as default, although my Yahoo still works. So back to the issue, in IE 11, if I click on "File" / Sent, the "sent to" is greyed out and thus it won't work.
Computer is really slow, that will be the next challenge and what stuff to safely uninstall.
I have upgraded my windows 8 to 8.1 and now no apps will work and the pc settings wont open also I have activated windows but still wont work
View 14 Replies View RelatedSince i did a fresh reinstall of Win 8 64 i have never been able to change the folder view options. Example; I am in a windows explorer window, everything is displayed as a large icon (yuk), i right click go to view and change to details. I then click 'view' on the toolbar and click options, I then navigate to the 'View' tab whereby my intention is to apply the 'detailed' view to all explorer windows in future yet both fields are greyed out (the 'Apply to Folders' and 'Rest Folders').
It has never been usable since this fresh install (ie on previous versions of win 8 installs i recall it working, but not this one, ie its not a recent problem, has always been like this).
Windows 8 Pro, 64 bit. In Explorer (file manager) under File, open command prompt, and open Windows PowerShell are greyed out. This is a new situation. How can I restore them?
I didn't realize I had to have a drive or folder selected to activate the prompt.

View 4 Replies View RelatedToday, my windows 8 desktop acted up for no reason. When I tried to install a program/software, it prompted for an Admin. Password. However, in the dialog box, there was no text box for typing in the Administrator password and OK button was grey out.
Tried to open an elevated command prompt box using "Run as administrator", no luck. Selection was grey out too. I could not enable hidden administrator account via "net user administrator /active:yes" from elevator command prompt. I also could not install any software because the Administrator password dialog box contains no text box to enter Admin password and OK button grey out. I could only clicked the Cancel button.
I have a new HP Pavilion Slimline 400-034PC with a HP Pavilion 23bw monitor. I need to dim the monitor screen because it is too bright but the brightness control in the Windows 8 settings is greyed out. All drives and OS are up to date. The adaptive brightness has been changed in the power settings but that did nothing.
