Win 8 - IE 11 - File / Send To Greyed Out
Apr 16, 2014I just bought a new HP computer. Came with 8.1 and IE 11. Recently had windows XP pro, worked fine but needed to get a new machine. Anyway, lost outlook express, took a while to figure out to add windows live mail and set it as default, so now the "icon" in IE 11 works. Yahoo mail is my main guy but couldn't get it to set as default, although my Yahoo still works. So back to the issue, in IE 11, if I click on "File" / Sent, the "sent to" is greyed out and thus it won't work.
Computer is really slow, that will be the next challenge and what stuff to safely uninstall.

Apr 7, 2013Windows 8 sucks big time. It reminds me of Win Millennium Edition. I have Outlook (actually all the Office Suite 2013).
In the Windows Explorer I cannot right click & send to an email. It just shows blank. And forget about reinstalling the whole thing, I don't buy that type of solution. Can't compute.
In Regedit, I have the same parameters shown above.
When I save & send using Excel 2013, Outlook just crashes.

Jul 13, 2014I have a Gmail account and signed it in on windows mail program I know that Gmail let me to send 25MB attachment with my emails When I try to send an email with more than one attachment which is only 7MB at all, I face this error: "problem with windows messenger program, check with your provider for more info" and also this happens when I try to send them in a compressed folder. then I have to send them one by one... what is the problem?

Apr 27, 2013I'm bravely tackling Windows 8 and am upset to find there is no button above web pages to 'send to mail recipient' or 'send link to mail recipient', which I found invaluable in XP.
The only way I could find to do it was create a shortcut on my desktop and then send that to a mail address but even that didn't work properly.

Sep 15, 2014Just updated my desktop and it came installed with Windows 8.1. Previously used Vista & XP. Thought I had set up user accounts etc correctly. Have a Hotmail and talktalk account supposedly installed but now my talktalk email looks totally different from Vista and will receive but will not reply or send. I log into it through 'google/talktalkmail otherwise using the mail icon it opens just like Hotmail and I have only my limited hotmail contacts. Where to access various settings etc. I do not have a 'start button' ...

I have set up( eventually) Windows 8 mail to receive mail from an extra email address as well as the initial one e.g [URL], and [URL]. Now, while I can read incoming mail from both, if I reply to mail coming in on the second address, the reply shows up as originating from the first address. How I can reply to an email that came in to the second address with that same address as point of origin?

Dec 21, 2013New Windows 8 machine. Want to keep my POP3 email, so have downloaded Windows Live Mail. WLM receives ok, but will not send. Error screen simply says 'Failed' under Status with no error designation. The WindowsLiveMail.log shows this at the point of the failure: "SMTP [rx] 535 Incorrect authentication data".
Now the weird thing is this: I have a Windows Vista machine running in the same room which also uses Windows Live Mail and it sends just fine. The account properties & settings (ports, checked boxes, login info, etc.) authentication data are identical on both machines.
In addition, the same settings are used in my iPad mail app and it sends just fine. But WLM on Windows 8 just won't send. I have uninstalled WLM and redownloaded it, but the same problem. FYI, my antivirus is Avast, and it is set to not scan outbound mail.

Jun 18, 2013With a website opened on the desktop that I want to send the 'link' or 'page' by email, I go to 'Page', (top right), but both the 'Send page by email' & the 'Send link by email' are greyed-out. They won't even work if I select/highlight the page first. Why? How do you normally accomplish the same thing with a site from the 'Start screen'?

In the old XP days when ever I received e-mail with that annoying vertical line down the side of the page it was simple enough to get rid of them by using the instructions below. Now of course in this modern world things are different with tool bars turning into ribbons. When I open the e-mail there is no View.

Mar 23, 2013I setup a Lock Screen picture through PC Settings/Personalize in Windows 8 last week on my laptop and it synced perfectly to my desktop as well. But yesterday I noticed my lock screen picture was not active when I opened my laptop it went straight to my picture password.
The lock screen picture still is functional on my desktop when it awakes from sleep or a test lock. But it refuses to show up when my laptop comes up from sleep/lock. So I went into my laptop PC Settings under Personalize and it is showing this screen.
I cannot access any Group Policy stuff on my laptop since it is using Windows 8 (Home). But my desktop is using Windows 8 Pro (w/ Media Center). Both of my copies of Windows are already activated and I use my Microsoft Account to log on to both so everything will sync correctly.
*Edit* All of my Group Policy information on my desktop is set to "Not Configured" so it shouldn't conflict with any prevention of settings on my laptop.
I really like Windows 8 and this problem is a little silly and I'd like to correct it!

Dec 29, 2012Since i did a fresh reinstall of Win 8 64 i have never been able to change the folder view options. Example; I am in a windows explorer window, everything is displayed as a large icon (yuk), i right click go to view and change to details. I then click 'view' on the toolbar and click options, I then navigate to the 'View' tab whereby my intention is to apply the 'detailed' view to all explorer windows in future yet both fields are greyed out (the 'Apply to Folders' and 'Rest Folders').
It has never been usable since this fresh install (ie on previous versions of win 8 installs i recall it working, but not this one, ie its not a recent problem, has always been like this).

No Text Box For Typing In Admin Password And OK Button Greyed Out?
Mar 31, 2013Today, my windows 8 desktop acted up for no reason. When I tried to install a program/software, it prompted for an Admin. Password. However, in the dialog box, there was no text box for typing in the Administrator password and OK button was grey out.
Tried to open an elevated command prompt box using "Run as administrator", no luck. Selection was grey out too. I could not enable hidden administrator account via "net user administrator /active:yes" from elevator command prompt. I also could not install any software because the Administrator password dialog box contains no text box to enter Admin password and OK button grey out. I could only clicked the Cancel button.
HP Pavilion 23bw - Brightness Option For Monitor Is Greyed Out

I need to dim the monitor screen because it is too bright but the brightness control in the Windows 8 settings is greyed out. All drives and OS are up to date. The adaptive brightness has been changed in the power settings but that did nothing.

Windows Busy Circle - System Restore Button Is Greyed Out?
Jul 31, 2013I'm running Windows 8 on an HP P2-1310.
Examples where I see the windows busy circle:
1. I right-click on the recycle bin icon2. If I right-click on the recycle bin I get the busy icon. For a few minutes, I get the busy icon if I hover over the recycle bin. Eventually, things seem to go back to pre-busy state in that I don't get the busy icon, but the right-click menu never appears. I get a busy icon for the recycle bin even if I shut down browsers, etc.
2. right-click on the time and date in the lower-right portion of the screen, in an attempt to launch Task Manager. If instead I do CTRL-ALT-DEL I get launch Task manager immediately.
Maybe related: if I bring up Control Panel - System Properties - System Protection, the 'Protection Settings' table says:
"Available Devices
Searing"
forever.
The System Restore button is grayed out.
Occasionally, I get the busy icon in other cases, but I have yet to find it repeatable.
When I get the busy icon, it is only on the application mentioned, above. I can generally operate a (3rd party) browser with no problems.
Task Manager reports the sort of numbers I'm used to seeing when things are running normally:
1. ~50% CPU usage (due to browser).
2. ~25% memory usage
3. 25% disk usage
4. 0% network usage
I now have gotten things into a mode where the desktop is semi grayed out and shows the busy icon if I hover the mouse over the desktop. Also, I get the busy icon if I hover over the 3rd party Start button or any of the app buttons on the task bar (this is the bar just to the right of the Start button; I hope I'm using the right term).

Dec 31, 2013IE opens, but doesn't function properly, won't display web pages and the settings are all greyed out. running 8.1 Pro with Media Center 64 bit. Ran SFC/Scan, but got the error that it found corrupt files but couldn't repair them. Then I couldn't find the file cbs.log to see. I also turned off IE11 rebooted and turned it on then rebooted with the same result. I did have a virus (which I can't remember the name). that is gone but now this.

Apps / Software :: Open Laptop Lid - Screen Momentarily Goes Dark / Excel Cells Greyed Out
Jan 9, 2014I have a Sony Vaio Pro 13 laptop, running Windows 8.1. If I have a couple of Excel spreadsheets open, close the laptop lid, leave it a minute or so, then re-open the lid, the screen momentarily goes dark, then comes to life again. All open apps are OK with the exception of the Excel sheets. In these, all the cells (& ribbon) are unviewable. The whole worksheet area on the screen is not the normal cells but a screen full of whatever colour I set for the default ribbon colour (some kind of beigy grey...). You can't click on any of the cells, can't see what's in them etc... you CAN close the sheet using the window close x at top right (even though you can't actually see the x) but that's all.
I have set up Windows so that NO ACTION is taken on closing the lid. It seems to be the same problem as described at hibernate - Excel windows invisible when laptop comes back from sleep - Super User but no working solution is available. (The one on this link refers to clicking 'restore' but that doesn't work) Running Excel 2013 (part of Office 2013).
I'm stuck as to what may be causing this... but I guess it should be an Excel problem since other apps (e.g. Word) don't exhibit this problem, but that may be a function of what's open at the time the lid is closed / re-opened?
Windows 8.1 Won't Send PDF's Emails
Feb 17, 2014I just upgraded to Windows 8.1 because Microsoft said Quickbooks Pro 2012 would work. Well, it won't!! I still can't send PDF's in an email or save a report in the PDF format.
