I am the only user of my pc. Now, when I attempt to modify some programs, it says that I have to be an administrator. Since I'm the only user besides "guest" (which I've never used), how can I get this OS to recognize me as admin?
View 9 RepliesI purchased a Inspiron 17 7737 directly from [URL] on 12/5/2013. It was delivered on 12/182013. It had Windows 8 as the operating system. I had assumed that it would have the latest version of Windows when it arrived since 8.1 had been issued in October. I opened the Store app and the upgrade to Windows 8.1 was not available to me. I understood that this was a problem for others and did not pursue it further at that time. I was out of town for 2 weeks in January and did not use the laptop during that 2 week period. When I returned, I opened the Store and found prominently placed the invitation to the free upgrade to 8.1. I was signed in using the Administrator account and when I hit the download button for 8.1. I was given the message "You need to use an account with Administrator privileges to install Windows 8.1, try logging in with the user account of an administrator of this PC and try update again".
I verified that my account had Administrator privileges and tried again and got the same message. I created another user account and gave it administrator privileges and tried the download again signed in on that account and got the same message. I called technical support and for over 5 hours over 2 different days, the technician attempted to resolve the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling Windows updates. When that failed to resolve the problem, he "refreshed" my PC which, I understood put it back to the status it was in at time of delivery. He then had to do all the Windows updates (approximately 65) and tried to download 8.1 again.
This did not change the error message when trying to download to 8.1. At that point, I was told that they were elevating it to a technical team who would research all the logs from my machine and come up with a solution. They indicated that they would call me back when a solution is found. Although my Administrator account was not recognized when attempting to do the 8.1 download, it recognized the Administrator role when the technician needed administrative approval to do all the uninstall and reinstall activities when trying to resolve the issue.
I make my acc there because i have a problem with admin/standard, I made my local user to standard and one other to administrator and this user amdin i cant see in the switcher users what can.
I Trued:Cmd/net users administrator /active:yes (access denied error 5)...
I have a 2-month-old Dell Inspiron 15 notebook running Windows 8.0, and trying to upgrade to 8.1. I have plenty of HD space and 4GB memory. I have 2 user accounts, one with admin designation. I want to change the admin to the other, but I cannot. When I try to change the user accounts, I get a message requiring the account with admin to OK any changes.
When I enter that account's password, I get a message that the password is incorrect. I changed the password in the "reset password" site online, but that password doesn't work in the change users part of the PC. So I am stuck. Right now, I cannot affect any changes to the system, because that requires the OK of the admin user account, and that in turn requires a password, which seems not to match the password that I entered for that account.
i have recently migrated to Windows 8 from Win7 Pro and am coming to grips with the elevated security MS has dropped on us.Either by design or accident when i installed Windows 8 i made my account a standard account not an Admin account.
Following the steps outlined on this site, which has been highly useful, i have learned that the home edition of Windows 8, which i have, is rather more useless in changing many settings that were taken for granted in win7.
My issue in changing my account to an admin account is after successfully activating the admin account and signing into that, the changes i make in that account to my standard account, are not saved or reflected when i log back into my standard (or what should now be an admin) account.
My standard account remains a standard account no matter how many times i log into the admin account and change the account type.I am more than frustrated by the lack of ease Windows 8 has infused into what should be a simple process of having my account be the administrator account.
Recently, I set up a test administrator account and a test standard user account. Having served their purposes, I deleted them--or so I thought. Now, when I go Computer > C: > Users, I still see both of the user folders. When I try to delete them, I am told that I need administrative permission, but I am logged on as an administrator, specifically, the original administrator on the computer. Perhaps I need to take ownership of the folders in order to delete them, but I have not had to take ownership in such a long time that I am hesitant to do so without hearing from others--that taking ownership is the right path to deleting the folders. I know that we have a "take ownership" tutorial so I can check it out if need be.
I also have the option of stopping sharing of the folders--which would work a little since one or both still show up as shared folders on my network in a place or so. Probably this part of what I have typed is best ignored since stopping sharing won't delete the folders.
Coming from XP, I am trying to get oriented to Windows 8. What has me confused is how to control the passwords of Users.
I am the Administrator and some time ago I created a User without Admin privileges. Unfortunately I did not write down the PW, however, as Admin, I do not see a way to change the password (as Admins could under XP).
What are my options besides deleting the user (it is actually for me)?
Windows 8 pro: I have a user account with admin rights. It used to work fine till one day, after rebooting, I had no tiles in the start view. I ran chkdsk and it seems to have fixed the problem but now when I run any application as "Run as administrator" I get: Windows cannot find '[The exe]'. Make sure you've typed the name correctly, then try again.
If, however, I run the same app as normal and it works - thus the exe exists and there is no problem with the app itself. (Also check in the file system)
If I create a new user with admin rights I get the same issue.
(The other old user with admin rights are working fine.)
I'm experiencing a weird problem with Windows 8 Pro x64. Although I'm on the only user account on Windows (that is the administrator one), it looks like I don't have the Admin privileges and need to manually request them each time.
For instance, when I install some programs (e.g., VLC, Deamon tools, Dropbox...), I often receive errors similar to "Windows could not elevate", or "Windows doesn't have sufficient rights to install from a temporary directory". This is easily fixed by right-clicking the executable and selecting "Run as administrator", but is this working as intended? I have another Windows 8 installation where it just works without this workaround.
Do I need to change some settings?
On Windows 8 how do you get a program and associated files from administrator account to a user account. Specifically MS Money.

When I set it up new I linked it to my hotmail account so when it boots up it shows my email address and I login. I want to keep the laptop just the way it is but remove my login and email and assign a new administrator. Once with windows 7 I messed with the admin account. What is the proper way to remove me as a user and replace the login and administrator without loosing or changing any of the files or settings on the computer?

but yes button in deactive and there is not any password field to fill it.
I dont know in which type is my user account ?? standard or administrator?now I can't do many of actions in windows for this reason and can't enable administrator account and switch to it.
I have the version of MSDART for Windows 8. (I forget which version number that is.) I have created the USB boot disk for it.
It will boot into the MSDART environment, but many of the tools don't work (such as regedit, system restore, SFC, etc.), as it doesn't seem to recognize my installed (legal) Win 8 Pro (all the latest updates). (I forget what the error message is, but something about not having found an OS.)
I wonder if it could be due to the following. The computer (Lenovo X230 notebook) came with Windows 8 installed on the installed HDD, which is listed in the BIOS as Drive 0. I installed an mSATA SSD, and did a clean install of the OS on it, and formatted the HDD, which I use for storage. The BIOS clearly lists the SSD as the boot drive, and it boots up fine from it. (It is listed in the BIOS as drive 2, however.)
When I boot into MSDART, I can still use Explorer in it. I noticed (although I had chosen the option to keep the same drive letters as the OS, but I guess since it did not recognize the OS) that the hard drive is listed as Drive C: in it, and the SSD is Drive D:.
Therefore, I am wondering whether MSDART only looks for the OS on the HDD (listed as Drive 0 in the BIOS), even though the BIOS also lists the SSD as the boot drive?
After installing the first set of Win8 updates through Win Update, my PC no longer registers its DVD/CD drive. I've found this is a relatively common problem having looked online but can find no working solution for it.
I've done the reg edit tweak which is widely published but that does not correct it, nor does d/loading the free version of Win Media Centre.
I've decidede to upgrade my girlfriend's computer from Vista to Windows 8.I didn't dare to delete the old O.S, thus I installed it on a different hard disk. (*) Now I can choose to boot from Vista or WIndows 8. Both work.
From Vista everything is OK. It recognizes his partition and Windows 8's one as well.
But from Windows 8 I cannot acces the old Vista partition in the other disk (ntfs too). It says that is unallocated.What can I do?
I don't think I have to repair the partition because it's working well if I boot from Vista.With other tools such as easeus it's the same. From Linux everything is OK.
(*) In fact it's in an external disk, but it boots properly and everything seems OK, except the partition issue.but he had too many partitions. I hust have two primary partitions on each disk.
I just bought a new laptop and I'm try to move my music over. When I put the jump drive in it tells me there is no file in the folders.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo, I wanted to download a game from the windows store and had to create a Live/microsoft account. After doning so win 8 made that account the account that I use to sigh-in to windows. Didn't wanted that so I went to user managment and deleted the account from thare. The problem is that I also accidenly deleted my windows user account as well.
After I restarted, I got to the password screen and my windows user was gone, just "other user". I tryed to enter the windows user name and password but nothing. the screen also showed the microsoft acount name but here also the password dident work (probably because a deleted them both from the system...)
Latest updates installed, Windows 8.1 Windows Media Player will not play AVI files. All other file types work fine. Windows Movie Maker won't recognize them either.

i installed WINDOWS-8 RP 64bit for trail on DG41RQ mobo (as well as on other PC (DG31PR) where there is no problem).
all was well till i updated the intel chipset driver (Intel Chipset Device Software version 9.1.2.1008)
and the BIOS version (to RQG4110H.86A.0017.EB)
now the system doesn't recognize my LG DVD drive (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20) , (also in device manger and also in SAFE MODE) my BIOS dose recognize it and i CAN boot a live Win-XP from it.
i tried to roll back the IDE intel controllers drivers, but no change.
i have an IDE HDD as master, and the DVD Drive as SLAVE (recognized as such by BIOS).
my UEFI is desabled in BIOS (i don't know what it is actually).
(i have Activation Key (PRO) but i want to make sure all is well before activation)
I have a Samsung SE-218 External DVD drive, and I cannot seem to access it in Windows 8.1 (though I have not had a chance to try it on any other computers yet, so there is always the possibility that something is wrong with the drive). Whenever I plug it in the light comes on and it will spin the disc for a bit, but nothing shows up in File Explorer or in Device Manager.

I have a sony vaio pro laptop, originally running windows 8 but just updated to windows 8.1. However, this problem was the same when I had windows 8 so updating to 8.1 has not changed anything. I cannot add my xbox 360 wirelessly as a device to my vaio laptop. I want to be able to stream videos etc from laptop to xbox. When I go to Change PC settings>Devices>Add device the computer searches but will not find the xbox, despite it being switched on and connected to the wireless network.
The really frustrating thing is that I have another laptop running windows 8, now updated to 8.1, and it connects with the xbox with no problems whatsoever. As soon as I click 'add a device' on this laptop the xbox is found and I can connect to it/stream content with no problems.
I have tried disabling the firewall on my vaio laptop, still didn't work. I have ensured sharing etc is turned on on both the laptop and the xbox.
I set up Windows 8 Consumer the way I like it -- had to create a custom inf for the screen of my Dell Mini 10 among other things.
I then created a system image on another computer on my network.
Next I wiped and reformatted the disk in the Mini.
But now, when I try to restore from the system image on the network, Windows 8 can't see or recognize the backup. I can browse to the location on my network perfectly well, but no matter what folder I browse to, from the drive letter of the backup drive to the folder named "Backup 2012-03-14 015251," I keep getting a message that there is no image there.
How can I get Windows 8 to recognize my secondary HD? It is a WD Green 500GB SATA drive. My bios reads it, but Windows 8 does not.

Now, my question is, can I buy a wired Xbox 360 controller and connect it to my computer, and trust it to download the drivers correctly, and work like it's supposed to? I have got a new game, and really want the controller to work for it.

I can find it in the apps, I can even have it open but when I try to open a Word file I receive in an email for example I get the screen that asks me to either buy it or if I already have it, to enter the key. Enter the key and it says it's not valid, but is the key I used to download.
View 9 Replies View RelatedBasically, I just bought a pc, turned it on, put my old monitors vga in the port provided, and basically, I just see a black screen, the pc is booting fine, etc, but cant see anything on my old monitor.
what i did was, I went to my pc, there are 2 hdmi ports, one is the upper one, and one is down, put the hdmi one on the upper one, nothing.. wasnt able to see anything on my tv that has a hdmi input, but when I put the hdmi cable in the lowest hdmi spot I can see windows, and am able to write this now.
My question is, how can I acces my pc thru the vga port of my old monitor without having to put it in the lowest hdmi port on my tv?
So, I have been running 8.1 pro for some time now. During the last 2 or 3 weeks, I started having a login issue.
It loads bios, loads windows fine. I get to the login screen, and it seems to take forever to recognize internet connection. Gives me the little "!" over the internet. I put in password. Takes about a minute to finally log in.
I have gone to start up in task manager and disabled everything. This does nothing. I have changed from a live to a local account. Nothing. I have not installed anything recently other then video drivers. Internet seems to work fine while logged in.
Have all the most recent mobo drivers.......

Anything else in my hardware does not really seem relevant.....
I am attempting o OC my cpu and gpu and have to reboot a lot to dial it in.
Here is a really bad pic of what I am seeing on the login screen. It takes up to 3 minutes to establish connection when it used to be almost instantaneous.
Here are some other things I have done.
-Updated router firm ware: no change
-Tried static ip: nodda
-Disabled all virus software: nothing.
-Differnet cable. nothing
still having the issue......
I seem to be going round in circles trying to reconnect a working Windows 8 laptop to the WiFi after upgrading to 8.1
It refused to recognise the existing and working WiFi upon reboot after upgrade.
I have twice ran the 'netsh wlan delete profile name=[profile name]' command to remove the profile, rebooted the machine, re-added the profile, nothing happens.
The network symbol in the system tray when clicked doesn't show the profile I created, so I can't select it to connect to (though I set it to auto connect?), it just shows 'Hidden Network' , but when clicking this and I enter the SSID and WPA2 key, it just errors with a failed to connect message.
This was working fine, that's how I downloaded the update, now it's broken!
I have to galaxy s2 one of of the can't connect to the pc and the other one can. The one which dosn't connect a messege pops up ( the last device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and windows dosen't recognize it.

Nothing happens when I click or double click on the user account icon in the control panel.
I then went to check if our other pc was the same but that's fine.
I did notice that on mine instead of an icon of two people the icon is that of a folder.
I have tried accessing it through "Godmode" and it says it can't find it and also all the icons for user tasks are a blank piece of paper.
I am trying to add a second account to my machine and whether I try a Local or Microsoft account, I get the same "User Profile Service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded" error every time I try to sign in for the first time. I've Googled this a bit and it seems everything I've found yet (except one) has been with logging in to existing profiles. For the one that was with a new profile, the solution didn't work.
I tried deleting all files similar to the specified one (file in C:UsersDefaultAppDataLocalMicrosoftVSCommon12.0SQM with name of "sqmdata-####-###-#####.sqm"), but that had no effect. I'm guessing this is because I have VS2013 installed, as this happens with my laptop as well. I don't want to delete my profile, I have important (and large) data in my documents folder that I don't want to lose. I'm guessing this will have to do with messing with the registry, but I don't know where to begin.
