Windows 8 Asus laptop dead hard drive
I understand all I need to do is install and it will pickup serial from bios and be activated
I found a windows 8 pro dvd but it did not activate maybe because laptop came with basic. I want to activate it without an activator as its not my laptop, and it did come with windows 8 genuine on it. I notice all the links here are dead and all the torrent are for other than basic windows 8.
I recently killed my windows 7 laptop (I don't want to talk about it). I pulled the hard drive and set it up as an external drive, so I can see all the files through my new windows 8 laptop. I downloaded and installed windows live mail 2012 on the new laptop, tracked down all my email files and manually transferred them over -- that worked like a charm. Transferring the contacts is not so easy, though.
The contact file appears to be "contacts.edb," but it's a hidden file. Even when I check the appropriate box to show hidden files, it still won't show. And if I search for the file, it doesn't show. BUT, if I search for the folder "DBStore" then the file "dbstore.ini" shows up, and when I select "open file location" the hidden files are visible in that folder, including "contacts.edb." Still with me?
I can't open the old live mail program to export this file -- I can drag it into the appropriate folder on the new laptop, but windows live 2012 pretends like it's not there. I've downloaded 3 different format conversion programs to convert an edb file to pst or csv or whatever, but none of them have worked. So, the only other thing I can think of is trying to get live email 2012 to look directly at the old file in it's old spot on the old hard drive, but I don't know if that's possible.
My Vista running laptop recently died. It boots as far as the screen saying it didn't boot properly last time and suggesting I boot into Safe Mode etc. Whatever I chose it doesn't work. I can boot into Ubuntu via USB disc so I know the laptop is fine.
My laptop has a genuine Vista license key but I don't have any install or recovery discs. Is there any way I can install Windows 8 using the upgrade license while it is still cheap?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a newer Toshiba laptop that I tried to clean reinstall Windows 8 using the "reset" feature. I wiped the hard drive completely deleting all partitions. Now I cannot boot into anything. Short of ordering recovery dvds from Toshiba, is there a legal way to reinstall Windows 8 back on this laptop?
View 2 Replies View RelatedA month ago or so I made a copy of the recovery partition using the Windows option to create recovery unit, and when it finished I chose the option to delete recovery partition from the internal hard drive.
A new 25 GB hard drive appeared, everything was fine.
Now I would like to sell this laptop but I don't know how to put the recovery partition back in its place or if it's even possible.
I know the backup it's complete because the data size t's the same and when i tried it, the restore was from the scratch, even with the sony wizard before the windows configuration.
I had a windows 7 laptop which finally died but before it did a made a system image backup to my external hard drive so I have all the files. How do I load that onto my new windows 8.1 laptop so I have all my files there?

To get a faster booting, i selected 2 processor instead of 1 in advanced boot option (msconfig) by mistake and now my laptop become dead slow on booting and startup.
I bought a new Sony Vaio laptop with Windows 8 pre-installed couple months ago; and all I have done since was installing just the MS Office and the Antivirus softwares. Now for no apparent reasons it shows the hard drive is full and I can not do anything with it. I've tried to create a system recovery with an USB flash drive, but it won't let me do it either.

It is not detected or recognized by my 2 usb slot on the left sight of my laptop but it can be detected by the slot in my usb slot on the right side which is the right side.. tried inserting usb drives on the 2 left usb slot and its working properly except of hard drive.

I have tried with an USB external adapter and connected directly to the motherboard with SATA and power cables. Neither way has produced a readable drive that I can see any files on.
I need to know if there is an issue with reading Windows 8 formated hard drives in a windows 7 environment or is there something wrong with this hard drive?
I'm booting off my SSD which is drive C: and I have games and programs on an extra hard drive which was origanally drive H: but after a restart it switched to I: and when I go into Disk Management to change it Drive H: isn't there.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Essentials, it's filled with tons of old photos, movies, docs, games, and I'm scared to think of what else. The SATA to USB connector broke on it, so I took the drive apart and put it inside my computer. I opened up device manager because it wasn't showing up automatically and the 2TB is showing up as unallocated, I'm freaking out now because I'm scared the data was somehow deleted.What do I do?
edit: I realize also this isn't directly related to Windows 8 (besides the fact it's the OS I'm on), but I don't know where else to post it. I'd also like to say that I had a really deep feeling the drive was going to break continually for about two weeks before it happened, so if you have a similar feeling about something, don't ignore it!

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know there is good software out there to clone/image my hard drive and restore it to a new SSD drive. I'm just wondering though, since my laptop is brand new, I made a full recovery to a USB drive and included the OEM recovery partition.
Couldn't I just swap out the old HDD with the new SSD and boot with the recovery stick and do a full recovery back to the new SSD?
Also, however I do this, recover or image backup/restore, do I need to do some type of SSD alignment? I can't find a clear answer on that.
Asus laptop Windows 8 stuck at Resetting PC 2%, Only option is hard reset??
This laptop belongs to my Grandma (87 years old). **She did not make the recovery disk for the computer.**
I got to the Recovery options and it has been stuck at 2% for about 6 hours. Asus OEM X55C Windows 8
NOTE: Yesterday I told Grandma I would see what was wrong, but it would bug out, freeze, etc when trying to log into the administrator. The screen would go totally black and then freeze. So, the computer has shut down improperly several times.
However, it did repair the disk last night before I attempted this recovery.
I have an Asus laptop with Windows 8. I got it last August and until last week I haven't had any problems with it. Last week, my sound stopped working. It shows that the sound is up all the way on speakers and system sounds, but I am only able to get sound when I plug my headphones into the headphone jack.

The folder for the back up was named Sue_ASUS_bkup and it was mapped as "W". The backup tools > Win 7 file recovery only provides a DVD as a backup location. Then lost connection to Internet went to update and restart as updates were needing to be done. After appearing to complete the updates, it then said failure configuring updates, reverting changes do not turn off. It has now been on this screen for 3 hours. It's being used like a desktop computer, with the lid closed connected to a monitor through HDMI and with mouse and keyboard. I have the Power4Gear Hybrid driver, to set the high performance mode in my PC, but after awhile it still goes into sleep mode (like 1 or 2 minutes). It's really weird, I checked every setting (on the driver app and control panel) and sleep mode is off everywhere.

He brought it in for being unable to boot into windows after having used it for a couple of weeks, and he demonstrated the issue to me. It literally just boots to grub. This customer is a basic windows user. No experience with linux or dual booting. He uses it for email. I have never come across this particular problem before, so I ran the normal partition tools to see if the table looked proper for a windows 8 machine. Everything checks out ok, however it is still booting to a grub prompt!!

Unfortunately I do not have the Windows disk so I'm looking for a solution outside of having to buy another one and wiping the hard drive to reinstall.
So recently I downloaded windows 8.1 onto my Asus laptop and my apps on the start menu will not work. whenever I click on them the apps blink or flash and don't open, I try clicking on them again but same thing happens the screen will blink them disappear again.

Since it has an open slot for a second drive i also bought an SSD for it , a Crucial M500 240Gb if that should matter.
So the laptop comes preinstalled with windows 8. There are no discs (recovery,repair,...) with the system. (a google search learned that this is normal)
Offcourse i want my laptop to run the Windows 8 from the SSD instead of the 1TB HDD (wich is actually a 3.5" , first time i see that in a laptop ).
1) What is the best way to do this ? Clone , fresh install , recover to SSD ? (alltough it seems the last one isn't possible)
I know a clean install is always the best way but since i don't have any Windows 8 disk to install from , i don't know how ... (read as : can you do a fresh install with a recovery disk ?)
2) How do i do it ? (a nice step by step if possible)
3) If i manage to do it , what do i do with the original HDD ?
Because it has 5 partitions now : 100MB (EFI-systempartition) - 900MB (recoverypartition) - 20,01GB (recoverypartition) - and a C and D (OS and Data).
Can/may they be deleted ? (want to use this just for data , all progams/games/apps will go to the SSD offcourse)

Not a noob to pc/laptop installs , but new to Windows 8 and it looks like it changed a bit since W7 and everything before that.
I've just received an Asus S301L laptop, with Windows 8 Pro preinstalled. The owner wants Windows 8 wiped and Win7 installed along with Scientific Linux.
I've disabled secure boot and enabled CSM in the BIOS, thus getting rid of the annoying UEFI boot process, and I'm now able to boot old-style from thumbdrives and whatnot.
My question is: given this partition configuration as shown by gparted, is it safe to wipe the whole damn thing and repartition from scratch, or will I run into bootup problems with the BIOS not seeing stuff where it wants to see it (like that suspicious FAT32 partition labeled "boot")?
I imagine this isn't a problem since I disabled everything UEFI, but better safe.
I am running Windows 8 on an Asus laptop. Two days ago it was doing updates and restarting. It did this 3 times, and on the third restart I received the blue error screen. It stated
"Recovery. Your pc needs to be repaired. A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error code: 0xc0000225
You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media [like a disc or usb device] contact your system administrator or Pc manufacturer."
It gives me three options at the bottom [press enter to try again, press f8 for startup settings, press esc for uefi firmware settings]. If I press enter I get the same screen just with a bit more text. f8 does nothing. Uefi takes me to the boot menu. I have been trying to boot from a dvd r with a flash operating system in order to recover my data before it is reformatted. However, it does not seem to recognize the disc. When I select to boot from dvd rom, it tries, then on the black screen appears text saying restart and select boot device or install boot media and press a key. I tried taking disc out and putting bavk in, then pressing a key, nothing, same message.
