View 5 Replies View RelatedI JUST bought a brand new PC a few weeks ago and it came with Windows 8. Last night I tried to load 3-4 of the programs I had gotten previously of CNET and loved.
When I went to the download screen, and clicked the green 'download' button, nothing happened. I tried 2-3 programs. I then tried to reboot and start fresh.
I have 4 user accounts set up, but I am doing this while logged in as the Admin/Main account.
I have had Windows 8 for a few weeks, and I just keep running into quirky issues. Is there any type of blocker I need to turn off or something?
I have upgraded to Windows 8.1 and have had trouble opening the default Windows apps. So I removed the news app. Now I am trying to reinstall it with Powershell. How can I do this? I don't have an account with Microsoft and don't want to create one just for this. I don't see it listed when I type Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers

I created add user account from it yet I do not test the drive D if it is readable, editable, or writeable, all the files I stored there. What I noticed was the Drive C of my personal files is fully isolated by password. So, my question is can I configure my Drive D too to view or read only my files for someone? I don't want to share because some files stored it contains terms and agreement.
View 3 Replies View RelatedEvery since I installed Update 1 to Windows 8.1, the Bing News App has stopped working. The computer will bring up the app after waiting 3 or 4 minutes. Once the app is up, it only stays up 5-15 secs then reverts to the desktop. The reason I know it is Update 1 that is causing the problem, is because I called for assistance from HP and after 2 of their "techs" got through with the computer it was completly messed up. I had to do a system restore. I chose a restore point going back before the update. After this restore the Bing News App worked. My next two steps were to get Norton AntiVirus working and then to again install Update 1. As soon as this was done, Bing News App quit working again.
I have also, uninstalled and reinstalled the app but this did not change it's performance.

I have a need for inspecting a huge batch of files created by Word 97. They mostly consist of a complex mixture of figures that (I've been told) on the original Word 97 were all ordered into columns (but no *tables* format was used). On my Windows 8.1, I have Kingsoft Writer installed and this shows me just a jumble of words and figures whose meaning I can't easily guess. It can't obviously read the exact format of Word 97.
I know I can find a Word 97 Viewer somewhere on the Microsoft site - but nowhere I'm seeing anything mentioned as compatible with Windows 8 and I'm reluctant to install something that might compromise my great new computer. Would it be o.k. to install on Windows 8 a Word Viewer created for previous operating systems?
On my desktop computer, when I try viewing youtube videos (and videos from some other sources) full screen, the toolbar across the bottom of screen in the desktop mode remains visible, blocking my view of (and use of) the player controls at bottom of the youtube player. All I can see is the seek bar moving as the video plays. If I put the toolbar in the AutoHide mode, then I can see (and use) the youtube player controls.
On my laptop with Windows 8, this problem does not exist. The entire player appears normally as if there were an "always on top" mode.
One difference is that the laptop had Windows 8 factory installed, while I installed Windows 8 over XP in my desktop. (That $39 deal offered at the beginning of the year was too good to pass up). Both computers have x64-based processors.
Computer comparisons:
Laptop: Samsung; AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon HD Graphics, 2.70 GHz; 4.00 GB RAM, 64-bit OS
Desktop: Homebuilt; AMD Athlon Dual Core Processor 5050e; ATI Radeon 3000 Graphics (with latest driver); 2GB RAM; 32-bit OS
Neither computer has the toolbar in the AutoHide mode.
On some sites with the desktop computer, when I move the mouse pointer toward the left edge of the player, the seek bar retracts and I can't grab it to drag it to the right. I don't know the if laptop also has this problem.
Im a computer repair tech, so I'm always hooking up hard drives from other computers to backup data or run certain off-line tasks
With windows 7, I could access the entire contents of a drive without any issues (via external USB dock)
Including documents and settings<user name> (Windows XP drives) or users<user name> (Vista, 7)
But with Windows 8, when I try to view the contents of the users folder, I always get
"You don't currently have permission to access this folder" - Click continue to get permanent access....etc
I never had to do this with Win7.
Now if I hit continue, I can indeed view those files and do my thing...but here's the issue: If Im trying to get a backup of somebody's dying drive, I can't afford the added stress of Windows making permissions change to an entire user folder...nor do I really want to make changes on the files (which the hard drive will be going back into original computer) by adding my credentials to every file/folder in there.
I just want to be able to get the files without any of the permissions prompts, something Windows 7 never asked for.
Is there some sort of setting I can do, registry or whatever....to eliminate this? I have UAC turned off, made some changes in secpol.msc.... so far no luck
I have a laptop running Windows 8.1 and I want to share the media on my pc to my Samsung television.I checked all the settings several times, but the laptop is not visible on my tv.My second laptop, running Windows 7 is visible; I can share media to my tv without problems.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't appear to be able to get videos working direct from 8.1 metro apps.
If I run videos/live streaming from within my browser everything works fine but from within metro, all I get is purple coloured dots going across the screen. I would assume that this could be a buffering issue but I might be wrong?
All add-ons - flash/java & silverlight as far as I can tell are up-to-date. The most likely problems are:
1. slow broadband (2 to 3 mbps) but from within the desktop, youtube etc works without any buffering issues.
2. I have Avast installed and I did read about problems with TV-Catch Up and I did read about the anti-virus plug in causing sites not to work. I have disabled it from within Firefox but TvCatchUp works whether its on or off from within the desktop browser but no luck direct from the app.
Everything worked fine from within Win 8 apps but not 8.1!
My last computer died a week ago so I bought a new desk top tower. I'm well conditioned to using W7 but everything seems to have W8 or W8.1 on it now so I got one with W8.1. First, I'm bummed that I have to learn how to use a new OS. Some say W8 is a better functioning version of W7. It's different, plain and simple.
I installed Classic Shell to add some of the familiar features from W7 to my W8.1. That did work with some things but when viewing pics, there is no task bar across the top of the screen like there was ion W7. I was hoping that Classic Shell would add one there but it did not.
Is there any way to add a task bar across the top of the screen in W8.1 when viewing a picture file like there is in W7?

Since yesterday I noticed that the Bing News app crashes after I click on it. When I click on it, there's the normal animation of the tile flipping over and taking over the screen with the news icon in the middle. However, after 2 seconds the app crashes and brings me back to the Metro UI. I can still see the app open in the apps bar on the right but clicking on it keeps the app crashing. The Live tile is working properly but after I reinstalled the app (which didn't resolve the problem) it doesn't work anymore and there is no option to enable Live tile when right-clicking the app.
I didn't install any new drivers, software or updates (except for the Definition update for Windows Defender). All the other apps are working properly. Doing an SFC /scannow didn't find any integrity violations.

After yesterday's Windows 8.1 Update everything else is working well but the Bing News App has become unusable. Cold started or restored from Taskbar when suspended, the app allows me to browse news only a few seconds, then suddenly suspends and returns me back to desktop. See the video:
I've done everything I know in my efforts to get News App working (everything here except not contacted the publisher, Bing (Microsoft)).
Since the latest Bing News app update came out, that can sync your settings across devices, mine wants to crash shortly after starting it. And this happens on multiple machines. I have managed to get into settings and turn off the sync of settings, turn off reading offline, and still no luck. It crashes every time. This even happens on a machine that just had Windows 8.1 completely reinstalled on it, and on my surface pro tablet which has had windows 8.1 on it for a while.

I have 4 Windows 8.1 systems and the Bing News app crashes after a few seconds to a minute on all four. It used to work fine so obviously, the settings (which are synced by OneDrive) must be corrupted.
Is there any way to clear the app settings? I tried uninstalling, rebooting, installing and that didn't work.
I tried turning off sync on all 4 machines, uninstalling the app, deleting sync data using the web, rebooting, and reinstalling but the settings just come back!
I have a HP envy m6 notebook and when im viewing websites the brightness will keep randomly changing. Why is this and how do I stop it? I've gone into the settings and turned off the 'enable adaptive brightness' but it still seems to keep happening.
View 4 Replies View RelatedDownload from a site, like a picture or media file (music, etc.), it downloads it fully, but it still says it is still downloading even when you can see the current state such as 40.7MB out of 40.7MB completed only certain sites do this, but others don't So something is off here, and since I got this from FB and another site or more, Firefox might be having a bug issue. I tried a resetting Firefox, but it didn't do anything. Another issue that might be Firefox-related is Youtube. In this case, the viewing history doesn't show any videos. I thought it was a site issue. It could be, but it's still the case now. Since I mentioned one issue, might as well mention this one too.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI got a new video card, namely the Sapphire Vapor-X R9 280X to replace my old (broken) video card, namely the Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 Boost.
The problem is that I get no video signal when linking my new video card. The vga-led on motherboard turns on red (normally never) .
I thought my motherboard is broken, but then I tried the video card (Radeon HD 6950) from my brother and he just shows video signal. (vga-led turns not on red this time on motherboard) .
I would also say that on the box of my new video card is a 750 watt power supply recommended, but I only have a 600 watt power supply build in my pc.
Lately I am getting this error message when tying to download."You've reached the bandwidth limit for viewing or downloading files that aren't in Google Docs format. Please try again later. You can also try to download the original document by clicking here."I am using Win 8.1. does this in Chrome and Explorer, and in both Yahoo and Google search engines.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having severe playback problems with the Video app. Whenever I try to play any video from my PC (avi or mp4), it just freezes on the first frame while the audio continues. If I try to skip it will eventually play properly for 2-3 secs, but then go blocky and freeze again. I've tried playing videos that I rented from Xbox Video, and they play perfectly. All videos also play perfectly on both WMP and VLC. Is it just a very poor app?
I am also having trouble viewing any flash video content in IE10, both Metro and Desktop. Youtube will not play any video in Fullscreen; even at 480p, playback is jerky, with an almost "strobe" like effect on movement. When I was using Vista, IE would quite happily play Youtube videos at 720p in Fullscreen with no issues. If I try to play the front page video on Vimeo, the whole page freezes up. There is no option to disable video acceleration in the flash menu, so I am at a loss as to what else I can try. I have upgrade my graphics card from 256MB to 1GB in the hope it might make a difference, but it didn't. Have just downloaded Chrome and can play Fullscreen 1080p with that no problem.
I was wondering if the two issues might be related? I have looked and looked for Adobe Flash settings all over Windows 8 but can find nothing.
I have been trying to view webchat sites, the ones where you can type in a box and communicate with the person on the live stream however for some reason the video never loads. I have tried all browsers, updated etc but just doesnt work. In fact I cant even type in the message box.
