Unable To Install Windows 8.1 RTM - Selected Disk Has MBR Partition Table

Sep 7, 2013

I previously had Windows 8 installed on my desktop - I've just booted to Windows 8.1 Pro Setup so I can install it on my desktop - I've formatted my hard drive from within the setup but when I try to install Windows 8.1 Pro on the partition, I get the following error message:-

'Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI Systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT Disks'

What can I do now as I don't have a version of windows installed anymore...

HP Notebook With GPT Partition Table?

Jan 29, 2013

i brought an HP Pavilion G6 and it comes with an GUID partition table (GPT), EFI and Secure Boot. However i need an MBR partition table, so i tried disk managerment but the option "convert to mbr" is greyed out and when i run the "diskpart - list disk - select disk 0 - convert mbr" i get an error "cannot convert a partition which has a pagefile on it" (disabling the pagefile didn t worked).

I guess my only other option is to format it, but the notepad comes with an lincesed Windows 8 which i dont wont to loose. So what are my options? I dont ave the CDs, as it s HP packet.

Update:I ve successfully formatted my Notebook. All i had to do is enter legacy mode, disable secure boot and boot from the Windows 7 DVD. So if you ave no intention using Win 8 it won t be a problem to "downgrade" in an UEFI/EFI System.

Unable To Merge Partition Using Disk Management?

Jan 20, 2013

I have a laptop with Windows 8 installed in a 256Gb SSD. There's a 32Gb recovery partition whose purpose is to recover the drive to factory install. Since I already imaged this recovery partition to an external drive I would like to delete it and merge it to the main C partition to increase capacity. I know I can do this easily with 3rd party solutions (Easus, etc), but I'd like to do it using the Windows 8 built in Disk Management. I tried but when I right click on the 32Gb recovery partition the only option that shows up is "Help", it does not show any other option that shows for the other partitions (Shrink, etc).

How To Restore Partition Table - Aspire V5 552p X440

Jul 30, 2014

I recently tried installing Ubuntu dual boot with my Windows installation as I had done with a previous system. I somehow failed to notice I had whole disk selected rather than the option for partition. Well. Obviously it wiped my whole disk along with my Windows 8 installation. I aborted the Ubuntu install progress right away and shut down, of course it was too late to save everything.

I resorted to Testdisk. It was able to find my C: (windows) and M: partitions, which I am able to restore in order to copy and access my data, but not simultaneously. It must be only C: (Acer) or M: at a time.

At this point my data is safe. My only concern now is fixing the Windows installation, I had neglected to create a recovery drive until after this headache transpired, and that was done with my friends Dell machine. I do not have any Windows 8 discs or drives, nor do I know how to aquire it without purchasing, which is not an option.

I suppose I'd like to know if I'm going to be able to boot Windows again, using testdisk to restore the proper partition table setup and (I don't need M:, it's been backed up)

I cannot restore or refresh the system via the recovery Usb created on the other pc as it reports the drive is locked.

Laptop is an Aspire V5-552p-x440.

I cannot access Acer Recovery.

Windows 8 - Cannot Extend Partition In Disk Management

Jul 9, 2013

After installing Windows 8 my computer had four partitions; I thought they'd be fine but want to change it to have two big ones, one for Media and one for typical C: usage. I moved everything out of D: to delete the volume so I would have free space to the right of C:, which I've read is what you need to do in order to extend partitions using Disk Management. However, the option is still greyed-out when right-clicking C: as shown:

I did this because I've read mixed things about using 3rd-party software to extend partitions; some that don't truly extend it and just trick your computer into merging the two... I like doing things the purest way possible and would like to truly combine C: with the free space to the right of it. Why the option is not available?

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 Cannot Be Installed To Disk 0 Partition 1

Nov 8, 2013

I am trying to do a clean install of windows 8 on my laptop (Elitebook 8770W) from a USB stick with original MS Windows OEM iso. Once I boot from usb stick, at the setup screen I enter the product key and then choose advanced to do a clean install. I then choose my hard disk partition to install windows but I get stuck here with this error:

"Windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partition 1"

I deleted the partition and choose to install on the unallocated space (150GIG) But still get the same error and when I click on the error this is what I get:

"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's Bios"

In bios I have my disk set as Raid and I also have a m-sata Flash cache. If I change raid to AHCI I will be able then to install windows. But if I turn it back to raid after install I will no longer be able to boot I have to be in raid mode to use my m-sat as cache drive.

So here I am stuck not being able to install windows I even downloaded latest intel rapid storage technology drivers and put them on the usb stick with windows setup files. When i got the error I choose to load driver. But even after that I was getting same error and windows would not install on my HDD.

What's the right way to install in this condition (raid)?

Windows 8 - Unable To Start Due To Missing EFI Partition?

Aug 25, 2014

I accidentally deleted the EFI partition, required to boot into my Win 8.1 installation - unbeknownst to me that EFI partition was on a different disk to where my Windows is located. To complicate matters the Windows install is on a RAID0 array.

Windows repair using the original install media didn't work.

EasyRE didn't detect the RAID0 drive.I saw various instructions on how to reconstruct the EFI partition, but they all assumed that the EFI partition is still there, which in my case it isn't.how I can get my data off that drive and re-install Windows?

Unable To Format Partition With Unused Windows 7?

May 25, 2014

Basically I installed windows 8 on an SSD and partitioned one of my 2tb drives in order to install / transfers programs and documents etc into windows 8 from the old windows 7 install. This worked perfectly, however, windows is not not letting my format the windows 7 side of the partition so i can expand and let windows 8 have the full 2tb of storage!

Windows 7 is installed on E:, I think perhaps the bootmgr may lay inside of E hence why I can't format it.

Windows 8 Won't Load - Unable To Reset / Required Drive Partition Is Missing

Apr 8, 2014

My Toshiba Satellite Laptop has Windows 8. For some reason windows 8 wont load. It gets to the screen where you select which username you want. But from there its non responsive, I cant get into Windows, I cant restart to load it up in safe mode.

I got a Windows 8 disk which I had to change the bios to load it up. The cd loads but it says the automatic repair wont repair the laptop. I try to refresh windows 8 but I get a message saying the drive where windows is installed is locked. unlock the drive and try again. It also wont let me use system restore.

I try to use the reset pc option but I get a message saying unable to reset your pc, a required drive partition is missing.
At the start it gives me the option to install windows 8, I don't know whether to just do that? Is it ok to do with windows 8 already installed?

When I plug in the USB and boot from it it brings up the recovery menu with options to reset the PC but when I click it it says something like - "Unable to reset PC. A required partition is missing".

Unable To Move / Extend Gpt Partition?

Sep 15, 2014

I have a Windows 8 system on a SSD with about 200gb free on the left of the C: partition (left over from previous OS I dual booted). The ssd is gpt partitioned and boots using EFI.

I tried moving the partition to the left using Gparted which worked but windows wouldnt boot. I tried recreating the bcd files with no success. After doing some research I was lead to believe it was due to keys under HKLMSystemMountedDevices having the partition offset hardcoded as it would start to boot windows then crash with an error saying boot device inaccessible.

I got it booting again by moving the partition back to the correct position and recreating the bcd files again.

So are there any guides or tools that can move the partition to the left and update the relevant areas of windows so that it can boot? Or extend the partition to the left without breaking it?

Maintenance :: Disk Management Only Allowing 20GB Partition Out Of 946GB

Feb 20, 2014

I've long been an XP user, just purchased a new desktop with 8.1 and a 2TB HDD this week.

I was partitioning some drives to organize things, and i am stuck.
On a 2TB drive, i have so far allocated 900GB over 4 drives for files, etc. [100,200,300,300]

I have 946.42GB left on my C, and i was hoping to get at least 2-3 more 200/300GB drives before leaving the remainder to C, but when i attempt to shrink my C drive, Disk Management tells me ive only got 20835MB/20GB available space to shrink. Wtf? I have literally added nothing to the computer except uTorrent, ive used Disk Optimizer to defrag the C drive 3 times, and still all of this space is unavailable? The OS has unmovable files scattered that loosely??

Also if the recovery partitions are factoring into this can I move them to another drive or just outright delete them.
