Tablets :: How To Reset Acer W510 Without Recovery Disks Or KB Dock

Feb 13, 2014

I was given an Acer W510 that came with no recovery media (the original disks or a micro USB flash recovery)

It also does not have the keyboard dock with it. I am stumped as to how I might reset this tablet. How to make a USB recovery drive, that might work but they would have to have the same tablet, right?

Acer Iconia W510 PC Tablet / Windows 8 - Blue Screen Appearing For No Reason?

Mar 6, 2014

I have an Acer Iconia W510 PC Tablet and I am talking about this error right here. [URL] ....

Okay, so this started appearing and I got a little worried. Each time it happens, I go through a restart and am just fine. So, I started to think about why it appeared. Then it happened more often. I'd say it pops up for no apparent reason every couple days, sometimes more frequent.

Every day, I do the following:

- Run Disk Cleanup
- Run Defrag
- Do a Manual Full System Scan with Norton Antivirus

I do all of these things and try to never download shady files, but it happens all the time. Sometimes it will be when I'm talking to someone on Skype (Text, not Video), or in an app like One Note or OK Cupid Touch.

It happens so frequently that I feel like there is something I'm missing.

Possible To Reset Windows 8 Laptop Without Disks?

Aug 24, 2013

Windows 8. My laptop has been experiencing problems lately, and i'd like to start fresh. I realize there is an option to reset your laptop (deleting all your files and start new) but i have one question. Since my laptop came with windows 8, i have no installation disks for them. I've read in this article here, Windows 8 features a reset button: Re-install Windows without a disc - Liliputing , that the windows 8 image-thingy (im not good with computers so i dont know the correct terms) is "built in" to the operating itself. Would this mean that i am able to reset my whole laptop (deleting everything and set to factory settings) without having to bother with burning disks and such? If so, would it mean that this is as simple as clicking one button and letting the laptop do all the work?

Setup Installation :: How To Make Recovery Disks

Jan 6, 2013

I bought a new PC the other day, and it has Windows 8. It advised me to make recovery disks, so I started the Setup Wizard. However, when it tried to actually burn the first disk there was an error, and it didn't complete.

Now, when I try to do the recovery disks again, right after it has prepared the files, the following error comes up: "Unhandled Exception: cannot create a file when that file already exists.".

So i'm a bit stuck. Is there a way to get my recovery disks done?

Setup Installation :: Can't Reinstall From Factory Recovery Disks - Possible MBR

Jul 25, 2013

My daughter brought her Gateway NE71B laptop to me because it was running like a snail. She had NO anti-virus software so I plugged in an external HDD and created what I thought was a Recovery Partition. When I had the computer boot to the external drive I tried the auto repair twice and failed both times.

When I tried to recover from the external drive I got an error message that said I/O error that could be caused by the fact that a portable device needed to be plugged in to continue.

Didn't know what to do so I unplugged the drive and tried again. No bootable devices found. Plugged the external drive back in and got the same I/O error. So I thought I'd just order the recovery media from Gateway. The day it arrived, I put the System Recovery disk in, It booted to the recovery screen with 3 options; Full recovery (original factory setup), Full recovery after removing data and Exit. I've tried both the first 2 options and up pops a window that says; Recovery must be done in Legacy Mode.

So I changed the bios from UEFI to legacy, restarted the computer with the Sys. Disk still in DVD tray, It start to load the recovery screen and up pops a window that says; Recovery Can Only Be Done In UEFI Mode.

If I were to guess, I would say I have an MBR virus and it's playing tricks with me. I've ordered a new identical hard drive to install when it arrives and hope to be able to get the recovery media to get back to normal.

Setup Installation :: HDD To SSD With System Recovery Disks - No Bootable Media

Jun 22, 2013

Not sure if it's Lenovos only, but trying to migrate Windows 8 OEM to an SSD has been a huge pain in the ass. This process should not be as difficult as Lenovo/Microsoft has made it.

I purchased a Y400 along with a 256G SSD. I'd like to clean install Windows onto the SSD, I did not want to copy image. I went through forums for hours trying to put a recovery system on a usb with no luck (even with the instructions given by a Lenovo moderator on their website), I kept getting "missing partition drive". I broke down and paid Lenovo the ridiculous "shipping charge" of $59 for the recovery disks.

These are my steps so far:

-My SSD is installed and I removed the HDD (until Windows 8 was installed, I'd then format it)
-Put Disk 1 into the optical drive (Disk 1 states it's the format sequence and starting point for restore, Windows 8 actually on disk 2, I believe)
-Pressed the "Novo" button on the left side of the machine (gives options of Normal Startup, BIOS Setup, Boot Manager and System Recovery)

*FYI - Boot Manager lists: Windows Boot Manager and 2 EFI volumes (when HDD is plugged in, just the EFI's when uninstalled)
System Recovery only works with the HDD installed and it's Lenovo's One Key Recovery which just restores to a restoration point.*

Went into BIOS setup
Tabbed over to "Security"
Disabled the "Secure Boot"
Tabbed over to "Boot"
Changed the Boot Mode to "Legacy Support"
Changed Boot Priority to "Legacy First"
Saved then exited.

Pressed the "Novo" button once more, went into BIOS setup
Tabbed back to "Boot"
Boot device priority was now displayed with SATA ODD, SSD and Network Boot.
I reordered to boot from SATA ODD
Saved and exited

Upon restart, I pressed F12 (select boot device), and chose the SATA ODD
It went into a DOS looking screen and gives "No Bootable Device - Insert boot disk and press a key"
I've also tried variations of the above procedures for a few hours with no luck.

I have not tried to boot from "Lenovo Recovery System" (which is only available with the HDD installed), I figured it would default to the HDD and not let me chose to install onto SSD.

Setup Installation :: Acer Aspire M7710 - No OS After Windows 8 Reset

Jun 29, 2013

I have an Acer Aspire M7710 which I installed Windows 8 on.

I wanted to use the reset windows option under the advanced settings option. After selecting the reset option it said it would reboot. This was about 5 hours ago and all I have had is a black screen.

Eventually I powered off my computer after 4 hours waiting as something seemed wrong. When I powered my PC back on I get nothing, just a black screen again.

I thought I would just boot from the Windows 8 dvd and reinstall but for some reason I can't boot from dvd anymore.

I googled around looking for option how I could enter my bios or change the boot order for cd/dvd but I can't get any keyboard shortcuts to let me boot from dvd or enter the bios.

How I can boot from dvd and reinstall?

Tablets :: Acer Iconia W700 - Creating Website (Touch To Move And Copy Text Element)

I have got my Acer Iconia W700 and it is good.

But i have 1 problem that i am trying build a Tablet News website on Weebly and when i drag and drop text or other element in the website it is good but when i touch on the text it goes straight to the text editor instead of the bar where you can delete or move and copy the text element and i can't do it because i want to delete the text element and it is getting annoying and it happens with most elements as well.

I tried using it with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7 pen to get to the bar of the element to delete/copy/move the element but it is the same.

Is there a mouse method on the Acer Iconia W700 because i think that would be better selecting without going to the text editor like the text element and goes to the bar(move/delete) elements in my website.

Weebly.com is a drap and drop website builder that is very easy to use.

Maintenance :: Acer Desktop - Setting OEM Recovery Image

Jul 10, 2014

I had my Acer desktop come back from the factory a couple of weeks ago. They did a great job in reparing it, however:

When confirming that they had did everything correctly, I out of curiosity, ran the ''reagentc.exe /showcurrent'' command from an elevated command prompt. Whoops, there was no recovery image specified.

After hurting my brain somewhat, I deduced I would need to mount the ''Push Button Reset'' partition with a letter - I used ''Z'' for clarity. *EDIT* So I could locate the folder that the image was stored in, and specify it in the command..** (I used Acronis Disk Director for this simple operation)

I was then able to use the ''REAGENTC /SetOSImage ... '' commmand and specified it in the folder in my OEM Push Button Recovery partition.

My question is this, if I unmount the letter Z, and therefore make it a hidden partition, I guess that Windows won't be able to find it if I need to do a recovery? Would you know of any work a round, or if I could perhaps use another command to specify the OEM recovery image, which is located in that hidden partition.

Windows 8 - Recovery From HD Failure On Acer Aspire M5-581T

Jun 30, 2014

My system started pausing/freezing, log files showing some errors about not finding some *.dll files. The system will still boot; I enabled the administrator account, but have lost the original user profile. All the docs/files are still there in the usual c:usersusername... directories. Installed Seagate's SEATOOLS app and it reported a failure, not completing the process. I used the recovery app from Acer and created a bootable recovery device (Seagate expansion portable drive) and a CD of drivers and apps. I am told this system has a small SSD, but it is hidden because it is for the OS, Windows 8.

I've put an identical replacement drive in; I changed bios to boot from the external USB device and it comes up in what appears to be recovery mode. I select option to completely refresh system, but it then comes up with "drive where windows is installed is locked". I select the reset option, it asks whether I want to re-partition. If I select yes, it returns 'unable to reset pc system drive cannot be found'. If I select no to repartition, it returns 'unable to reset. A required drive partition is missing.'

Using the recovery app, I can get to command prompt; it comes up as windows ver 6.2.9200, x:windowssystem32, The c: dir<enter> command returns efi (D), bootmgr, boot (D), bootmgr.efs and sources (D). I insert another usb stick and those files show up correctly.

Also, a byproduct of installing drive it indicates it can't find a battery now!

Why the reset or recovery options are not able to see the replacement drive? Since I used a Seagate expansion portable drive rather than a 16gb USB drive, is that the problem? I believe Windows 8 won't allow the use of a DVD for the recovery process (size issue?).

Could I consider doing a reformat and clean install of Win7 pro? Will I need to change the boot bios setting from UEFI to legacy? Would I still be able to reinstall Windows 8 at some point in the future if necessary, or should I try to work with the Windows 8 configuration?

Setup Installation :: New MSata Install From Acer Recovery USB - In Bios No Boot

Jan 14, 2014

These are the steps I've taken-- OS Win 8, pre-installed by Acer.

1) Make recovery USB using the Acer recovery wizard, with the laptop in stock configuration.

2) Install msata as secondary drive

3) Go to Computer management and initialize the msata and format with GPT style. Format the drive, assign a drive letter. (I only see 1 partition). I did this as NTFS/default allocation size. Is this where I went wrong?

4) Remove the factory HDD (listed as HDD0 in BIOS)

5) Boot to BIOS
5a) in BIOS, disable secure boot.
5b) Go to legacy mode
5c) Set msata (HDD1 in BIOS) as #1 in boot order

6) boot to USB recovery drive, follow steps to restore from USB (clean install, make partitions as it wants)

7) remove USB, reboot.

Error message-- no bootable device. I can basically load the USB again or the BIOS.

Tablets :: Dell Latitude 10 Essentials - Cannot Use System Recovery

Jul 24, 2013

I've got this Dell tablet and it's touch screen has gone kaput. It works sometimes, it doesn't most of the times. It has gotten worse in the last few days. It only used to do that when resuming from Standby previously.

There is nothing I can do about it from my end. I have contacts Dell support and it seems they will take it back for repairs.

In the meantime, my recovery partition seems to be not working either. I first wanted to factory reset it to see if it is a software issue. (Easier to RMA as well) Dell has their own recovery software called Dell Backup and Recovery and it doesn't work. It would reboot back to Windows 8's recovery environment (F8) and wait there. I have used Recovery once and maybe it screwed up everything. I don't know.

I tried Windows Refresh and Recovery features and they don't work either. Refresh asks me to insert the media .

Recovery tells me that i cannot find a recovery image in my drive.

I have used Refresh many times when the touch screen problem originally appeared, and then it didn't ask for the install media. Seems that it was using the recovery image that was originally in the drive.

Now the recovery image is either missing or inaccessible by any sort of recovery. I tried creating a Recovery media using the Dell Backup and Recovery software and it also stops saying that an error has occurred. How informative.

This is the current state of Disk Management screen. Why are there so many partitions? The right click menu only pops up for C: partition. It's empty for other partitions.

BTW, I have Windows 8.1 Preview installed as well. I have used Refresh few times after that as well. I don't think it has anything to do with the issue. But it would be great if I can reset it back to factory image before sending for RMA.

Tablets :: Asus VivoTab Smart - Restore Recovery Partition?

May 6, 2013

My tablet is running fine, but I did something (not bright) which could leave me in a lurch later. Here's what I did, and what I'm looking for.

Soon after I purchased my Asus VivoTab Smart, I made a USB recovery disk, complete with recovery partition. Then, to save disk space on the tablet, I deleted the recovery partition on the tablet. So far, so good. Where I blew it was when I got my flash drives mixed up and then erased my USB recovery disk! The tablet runs fine, but if I ever want to refresh it or do a reset, I need the recovery partition, either on the tablet or on a flash drive.

Is it possible to get that partition back?

Optical Drive Often Won't Read DVD Data Disks

Sep 17, 2013

Both optical drives are shown as working properly in Device Manager, but 70% of the time will not read data DVD disks. That includes data disks burnt using Nero and ISO Joliet format; and either mutli-session or finalized after burning. And disks formatted like a flash drive in UDF format using Windows 8 burning software. And is the same for R or RW +/- disks.

Rebooting sometimes fixes the program, other times not.

I have an Intel mob and CPU but Intel do not support drivers for Windows 8 so all drivers are generic Windows 8. Running driver update from device manager says all drivers are up to date.

I also intermittently, but regularly, get the printer and webcam USB2 drives not detecting these devices. And occasionally the USB3 external hard drives. USB drivers are also up to date.

Windows 8 Boot Error Remove Disks?

Jul 13, 2014

I have a Samsung 700T (tablet) for work running Windows 8.1.

I connected via USB a HP Laser Jet 400 printer. After connecting I received an error. I researched it and found it was due to HP's Smart Install. The Tablet recognized the printer initially as a USB Mass Storage device and the drivers conflicted with it. Once I turned off the Smart Install on the Printer, everything loaded fine and printed fine. No problem here. HOWEVER!!! In My Computer, I showed a HP CD ROM as an accessible drive which was weird since I obviously didn't have a CD ROM hooked up. I figured it was due to the smart install. I didn't think anything of it and that it would clear itself since no CD or drive was present.

Fast forward,

I had to reboot my tablet to allow other updates to finish. Upon restarting I get the error "Remove Disks or other Media. Press any key to restart"

There is obviously nothing in/hooked up to my tablet so there is no media. I believe the OS is viewing the HP CD as still in the drive and is not proceeding to boot.

Note, I obviously can't load windows since it won't boot, so I don't believe I have any way of ejecting or deleting the CD or drive.

Hardware Drivers :: Phantom Local Disks In Explorer

Nov 12, 2013

External hard drive I'm using with my Windows 8 laptop.

First a little background. I had a desktop computer whose hard drive I replaced, so I decided to use the old hard drive (a WD6400 SATA drive) as an external (using a SATA to USB docking station) to use between my Windows 8 laptop and my dual boot Mac OS X/Ubuntu desktop. I formatted the drive as NTFS and it worked fine with the dual boot machine, however when I connected the drive to my laptop it wouldn't show up in explorer!

After a bit of digging around on the internet I managed to get it to show up by going it to Disk Management and assigning it a letter drive and path (D/) which worked fine until I removed the HDD from the computer. What I noticed was that after removing the HDD the path (D/) remained in explorer as a kind of ghost and the next time I connected the HDD I had to reassign it again using disk management, this time using (E/), as (D/) was unavailable. I'm now up to (F/) with this drive and I can't seem to get rid of these 'phantom' drives in explorer.

I have tried restarting the computer etc. How do I remove the Local Disks (D, E & F) from explorer and then is there any way for me to just permanently assign a letter to the drive so it will show up when I connect it and also disappear when I remove it?
