I just installed Windows 8 last night. The start screen will only scroll if I left-click and drag the bar at the bottom. clicking the arrows won't work and neither will using my arrow keys to go from app to app (once it hits the side of the screen it goes out of view but the screen doesn't pan to follow it). I am also unable to click the minimize button to see the apps so that i can create column headers for my tile collections. I installed Windows 8 on my laptop a couple of weeks ago and don't have this issue.
Updated to Win 8.1 and just started having this issue. Will launch a game and it will minimize right away and everytime I click to open it it will minimize right back down.
Usually when on my Desk Top screen I could go to Google Search, find a site that I wanted to add to my desk top (not bookmark) , minimize it and then drag the address on to the Desk Top screen.
What happens now is that when trying to minimize it shows a blank screen underneath ? The only way that I can get back to the Desk Top is by going to top left corner and obviously I cant drag to there. How to rectify this.
received a 8.1 computer for Xmas, but only know how to navigate in Windows XP. I am constantly closing tabs by accident and loosing data because there is not a minimize or maximize icon in front of the X on each tab like there used to be. When switching between tabs, the X is SO close to the title of the tab, that I keep accidentally hitting it.
Is there anyway to minimize a tab down to the bottom of the screen onto the taskbar where I can keep it safe? Or is there a way to add the minimize and maximize icons to each individual tab? Or has the concept of minimizing been removed from the mindset?
Also, while I'm at it, is there any way to get all the tabs down to the bottom of the screen just above the taskbar. With this big screen I am really having to stretch to get up to it.
I hate the PDF reader on windows8. It opens the PDF and I cannot minimize it or put another program in front of it. Is there a way to minimize it or a better pdf reader aside from adobe?
I design software for clients, I need a way to have my software to be the only thing accessible on that computer. No task bar no icons, no way to go online.....I found software online that does control access to multiple computer functions but, these software are not Windows 8 Compatible.
I'm setting up a laptop. I have installed Classic Shell, and am working from the desktop.
My problem is that when I open up Google Chrome there are no minimise, restore, or close icons in the upper right corner as there are on my own computer.
That means that every time I do anything, like download and install CCleaner I can't minimise Chrome, I have to close all the Windows one at a time to get back to the desktop to see the install window.
I have a problem. Sometimes when I'm playing a game or any other application, it will minimize without me doing anything. I did a scan with Malwarebytes and it found a virus, I removed it, but this behaviour still continues. I did a sfc /scannow and it found some files that were corrupt but couldn't be repaired. It told me to reboot my computer, and that's what I did but I don't know if the files were repaired or not.
Task Manager, or as I like to call it, El Diablo, has defeated me. My goal is : Like in past Windows, set it up so that it minimizes to the tray when it's run automatically upon login (or startup).
This never used to be a problem: 1) Run Task Manager and set Options/Minimize on Use. 2) Put a shortcut to taskmgr.exe in your Startup group 3) Access the properties of that shortcut and set Minimized.
Note: A new thing in Win8 is that Task Manager will not run on Startup at all unless it's run as admin, so be sure to set that in the shortcut.
But this doesn't achieve the goal, since Task Manager is minimized to the taskbar, so you have to click it to open and then click minimize for it to go to the tray.
I'm assuming this is a bug, but no matter. So I turned to Task Scheduler, but nothing I tried there worked any better.
I even tried incorporating NirCmd, using a command like you see below, but it only wants to work when I run it manually from a command prompt, not from a scheduled batch file.
In some apps like facebook, twitter and other many i'm unable to scroll but at the same time i'm able to scroll in windows store app and other app like ESPNcricinfo.
I'm able to scroll through my touchpad then why I'm not able to scroll in one of the prominent apps as a substitute for scrolling. I've to use keyboard arrow keys which is very tedious and laborious.
i have a "microsoft wireless mouse 2000" and my pc is running win 8 pro. most of the times after i resume from hibernation the scroll speed is insane! moving the scroll wheel 1mm causes for example the browser to scroll over one page! in scroll settings it shows "roll wheel one click to scroll 3 lines", no matter what i set this to it still scrolls excesivly.. i need a full system reboot to regain control over scroll speed. this was never an issue with win7.
Is it possible to change the background color as well as the scrollbar color with win 8.1? I went to personalize to change the border color, Also can the taskbar color be changed?
I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:
(Vimeo was taking forever to process)
It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
I am having a issue with new windows 8.1, it was all working fine few days back then of a sudden some applications, like calendar, Bing Finance, Mail when clicked automatically minimizes on the taskbar. It looks like it has lost focus and is not working.
I understand there might be a third party application doing this and most probably it is the Dropbox that is doing this. However I have tried clean boot and system restart with safe mode, none of which has resolved this issue.
On the same system i have an another user account, this account has no such issues. Every application works and opens fine. I am not sure what went wrong in my primary admin account.
I want to scroll through tabs on internet browser with right hand mouse alone
I don't want to discuss the specifics why but basically I don't want to use my left hand at all sometimes during certain web browsing sessions.
How do I browse through internet web browser tabs with just right hand mouse? Without having to click on each tab. I just want to use either a button, scroll wheel, or an extension/add on that will make scrolling through tabs only right handed.
Is there a way to activate or create a two fingers scroll on desktop apps, like for a PDF-Editing Software?Because I want to edit a PDF document and when I want to scroll I have to close the edit modus in the Software first. On an Ipad there is this feature. You can edit a PDF file and if you want to scroll, you have to use two fingers.
Is there an app to create this multitouch gesture or to activate it on windows 8?
In Windows 8.1 do the on screen notifications only show on the Start screen?
I'm talking about the big ones I see with the black bar, such as low battery warning.
Twice I've been on the desktop and I never got a low battery warning. To test I made sure I was on the Start screen and sure enough the warning popped up. Also, when I switched over to the desktop the battery icon showed the exclamation point where I don't think it ever did when always on the desktop.
My menu doesn't come up. It doesn't come up when I press the Windows button in the bottom left corner either. It only comes up when I press the Windows button on the keyboard.
I have a Dell laptop Inspiron 15 3531. When I went to configure the toucpad, the 'Edge Scroll & Zoom' tab is missing. I want to scroll vertically (up and down) on the edge of the pad.
I've tried uninstalling the current touchpad driver(from Device Manager) and then installing the latest version. But it didn't work.
I recently switched from OE to WLM because I purchased a new laptop (Win 8.1). I incorrectly assumed, since OE is about 8 years old, WLM would be far more advanced in every aspect.
A huge annoyance is: whenever I need to find a folder in Storage Folders, instead of keying the first letter of the folder I seek, as with OE, I must scroll down to find it. To make matters worse; all of the Storage Folders are expanded to reveal the sub folders by default. So, as I scroll down, each time, I must manually collapse each expanded folder.
Any way to cause WLM Storage Folders to behave like OE.
I bought the Asus Zenbook Touch (ux31a-bhi5t11) yesterday, and the 2 finger scrolling worked fine at first, but a couple hours later it just stopped working. I can scroll using the touch screen, but not the touch pad now. It's brand new, and I haven't touched any of the settings, so I don't know why it would just quit.
As I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button
When I try to add a shortcut to the start screen I get a message 'No such interface supported' When I install a new program or game it wont add the shortcut to the start menu even if I have ticked 'add shortcut to start menu. All games and programs run fine, I just cant add a shortcut. How to solve it?
I can't seem to find any way to lock my start screen once I get my apps organized and just the way I want them. Is there no way to lock your apps so that they can't be rearranged by someone? If not then that seems like a glaring omission. I spend a great deal of time arranging it and then my three year old comes along and messes it all up. I would like to prevent this. I know I can create a user password and just not let any use on it.
At least Windows 8 makes it easy to create a Start Screen tile for a program, or for a folder. But if you have a FILE that you open often (like a Word file, a Notepad file, or a PDF) and you want a tile to open it, there's no ready-made way to create one.
But you can do it this way. Open your Start Menu folder, which is C:Users(Your Username)AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms (It's a hidden folder, so just paste the above path into the File Explorer address bar.)
Then open the folder containing your file. Right-click the file's icon and select "Copy." Then right-click in the Start Menu folder and select NOT "Paste," but "Paste Shortcut."
This makes the shortcut look like an "App" to Windows 8, so if you then go to the Metro Search Screen and search for "Apps" it will come up there, and you can right-click it and "Pin to Start."
When I am away from the computer for maybe an hour or more and come back, the Start Screen will not operate, I have to keep rebooting my machine. It is getting frustrating. I have changed the settings to NOT allow hibernation of the computer to include the hard disk drive when not in use; however, the Start Screen after non-use does not want to work, freezes. What can I do?
