I hate the PDF reader on windows8. It opens the PDF and I cannot minimize it or put another program in front of it. Is there a way to minimize it or a better pdf reader aside from adobe?
View 1 RepliesI just downloaded Adobe reader 11, and have been trying to open pdf files from the "My Documents" folder. Specifically files that I have just written and saved from MS Word. Adobe says: "There was an error opening this document. Access denied." However, if I save the file into the Downloads folder, it will open no problem.

But the window is empty like in the attachment (Image1).
when I tried to install from the Microsoft site it showed a window with two option of skip feature and preparing
after that it was replaced by a window like the one shown in Image2.
Applications like Adobe Reader or Office 2007 don't work.

Anyway, our problem right now is with PDF documents, she can download & view PDF's if she downloads them, but she's not a computer guru like me and just wants to view them in firefox when she clicks on them inside the browser window, but for some reason PDF's won't load in firefox, and we're not sure why.
Does that functionality require Java or flash or something? otherwise we're not sure what could be causing it. sure we're missing something though. Why PDF's aren't loading in firefox in Windows 8.1?

problem: installing Adobe Acrobat Reader
error: running the installer from go.adobe.com/reader from within firefox or IE
I get error saying "invalid function in Dynamic Link Library C:windowssystem32dxtrans.dl error window appears and continues to appear over and over after pressing OK until you either restart the computer, or somehow close the running task, but I've yet to figure out how to get to the task manager since this WIndows 8 stuff is still very new to me. I keep telling her for now she can download the pdf's and use the built in adobe reader, but apparently she's been having issues with that too lately. I think she wants to be able to read them in her web browser but without being able to install adobe reader she's not able to do that so.
Not sure why, have never experienced this in previous versions of Windows,but I can't seem to get pdf files to open in Firefox.

Got adobe reader installed fine, and adobe flash player installed fine,but still pdf files won't open in firefox.
when I click on a pdf file to open it in the browser, it doesn't do anything,its like the link to the pdf won't open at all. Happens every time.
Only way I can open pdf's on the web is to right click on the pdf link,click on 'save link as' download it to the computer, and open it in adobe reader.
I can do that, problem is this is my wifes computer, and she's not as computer literate as I am, so she has to ask ME to do all that for her whenever she comes across a PDF document on the web, which happens alot with her taking online classes right now. don't want her to have to call me every time she needs to open a pdf document ya know? especially when its something small like a groupon or something she only needs to view once to print the thing...
I have Adobe Reader 11.06 installed. I can open a single pdf perfectly well from Explorer, but when I double click on a second pdf to open it, nothing happens (it doesn't open). This only happens when I already have one instance of Adobe Reader open - opening the first pdf works just fine. And if I close the first one, I can open the other file (I just can't open them simultaneously). Opening a second file from Adobe Reader's open file dialogue also works fine.
After some investigation, it seems that when I open multiple PDFs on my SSD (which Windows is installed to), it works perfectly. It only runs into issues when opening PDFs located on another hard drive, which is an issue for me because my Dropbox folder is hosted on a separate hard drive.
All you have to do is disable security measures in Adobe Reader XI (Edit -> Preferences -> Security (Enhanced) -> Sandbox Protection -> Enable Protected Mode at startup -> turn off).
Updated to Win 8.1 and just started having this issue. Will launch a game and it will minimize right away and everytime I click to open it it will minimize right back down.
View 4 Replies View Relatedreceived a 8.1 computer for Xmas, but only know how to navigate in Windows XP. I am constantly closing tabs by accident and loosing data because there is not a minimize or maximize icon in front of the X on each tab like there used to be. When switching between tabs, the X is SO close to the title of the tab, that I keep accidentally hitting it.
Is there anyway to minimize a tab down to the bottom of the screen onto the taskbar where I can keep it safe? Or is there a way to add the minimize and maximize icons to each individual tab? Or has the concept of minimizing been removed from the mindset?
Also, while I'm at it, is there any way to get all the tabs down to the bottom of the screen just above the taskbar. With this big screen I am really having to stretch to get up to it.
Usually when on my Desk Top screen I could go to Google Search,find a site that I wanted to add to my desk top (not bookmark) , minimize it and then drag the address on to the Desk Top screen.
What happens now is that when trying to minimize it shows a blank screen underneath ? The only way that I can get back to the Desk Top is by going to top left corner and obviously I cant drag to there. How to rectify this.
I design software for clients, I need a way to have my software to be the only thing accessible on that computer. No task bar no icons, no way to go online.....I found software online that does control access to multiple computer functions but, these software are not Windows 8 Compatible.

The start screen will only scroll if I left-click and drag the bar at the bottom. clicking the arrows won't work and neither will using my arrow keys to go from app to app (once it hits the side of the screen it goes out of view but the screen doesn't pan to follow it). I am also unable to click the minimize button to see the apps so that i can create column headers for my tile collections. I installed Windows 8 on my laptop a couple of weeks ago and don't have this issue.

My problem is that when I open up Google Chrome there are no minimise, restore, or close icons in the upper right corner as there are on my own computer.
That means that every time I do anything, like download and install CCleaner I can't minimise Chrome, I have to close all the Windows one at a time to get back to the desktop to see the install window.
How do I get the normal Windows icons back?
I have a problem. Sometimes when I'm playing a game or any other application, it will minimize without me doing anything. I did a scan with Malwarebytes and it found a virus, I removed it, but this behaviour still continues. I did a sfc /scannow and it found some files that were corrupt but couldn't be repaired. It told me to reboot my computer, and that's what I did but I don't know if the files were repaired or not.
View 3 Replies View RelatedTask Manager, or as I like to call it, El Diablo, has defeated me. My goal is : Like in past Windows, set it up so that it minimizes to the tray when it's run automatically upon login (or startup).
This never used to be a problem:
1) Run Task Manager and set Options/Minimize on Use.
2) Put a shortcut to taskmgr.exe in your Startup group
3) Access the properties of that shortcut and set Minimized.
Note: A new thing in Win8 is that Task Manager will not run on Startup at all unless it's run as admin, so be sure to set that in the shortcut.
But this doesn't achieve the goal, since Task Manager is minimized to the taskbar, so you have to click it to open and then click minimize for it to go to the tray.
I'm assuming this is a bug, but no matter. So I turned to Task Scheduler, but nothing I tried there worked any better.
I even tried incorporating NirCmd, using a command like you see below, but it only wants to work when I run it manually from a command prompt, not from a scheduled batch file.

I am having a issue with new windows 8.1, it was all working fine few days back then of a sudden some applications, like calendar, Bing Finance, Mail when clicked automatically minimizes on the taskbar. It looks like it has lost focus and is not working.
I understand there might be a third party application doing this and most probably it is the Dropbox that is doing this. However I have tried clean boot and system restart with safe mode, none of which has resolved this issue.
On the same system i have an another user account, this account has no such issues. Every application works and opens fine. I am not sure what went wrong in my primary admin account.
I bought many Adobe font packages back in the win 3.1 days. I have a stack of 3.5 " diskettes full of these Adobe Fonts collections? Win 8.1 Pro x64 Control Panel > Fonts applet rejects them all when I try to copy them to the Windows Fonts library.

I have been having some strange issues with transfers from a USB 3.0 compact flash reader lately. When I start the transfer the speeds top out at 130 Mb/s but soon drop to 0 Mb/s. This seems to happen the moment that Windows 8 "populates" the Explorer window. When I am getting normal speeds explorer shows no files in it's window that have transferred. Once the files that have transferred populate the window the transfer drops significantly for the remaining transfer. I have recorded a small video to show this. Very bizarrre. Almost seems like an indexing thing.

When trying to print from Devices "charm" in Microsoft Reader, my default printer is not shown. It shows up in Printers on the desktop. Reader does show, however, a fax version of my printer, which is NOT installed. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the printer....no change.
I'm using a HP Officejet 7310 printer, which has the most current driver, and works in all other Windows apps.

I use a card and card reader for accessing lock boxes in my real estate profession. The company is called Sentrilock. I have installed their card reader utility and when I insert the card into the usb card reader, an internet window opens [URL]
If everything is working properly, there is supposed to be a green bar at the top of the screen to renew my card. It does not appear, tech support at Sentrilock says ports need to be open in the firewall but they couldn't give me further information.

i bought a laptop which runs on windows 8 since Feb 2013, and since then i have trouble making my jpg display or pdf display to occupy 50% of the screen, so i can open another different file, such as world doc at the same time that i am viewing the pdf. however, i have no idea how to do that. back to windows 7 all you need to do is put the mouse at the edge of a display window, and you can expand or minimize it to any size you want.

- AMD FX-8350
- AsRock 970 Extreme3 2.0
- 8 GB Corsair Vengeance LP RAM
- nVidia 9800GTX+
- Windows 8 OEM license
Everything was working well. After a few months I received an ATI Radeon HD5830 card from a family member. Uninstalled the Nvidia drivers, seated the ATI card, installed ATI catalyst and continued to work (happily).
I decided to do some gaming and installed BF4 (all official licensed) - during some online game I received a red screen and the computer powered down. After that I was unable to boot into Windows anymore. So I decided something must have gone wrong, so I installed windows again from scratch, setup all applications (except BF4) and continued.
However I noticed that everything, and I mean everything, works fine except for one and that's Adobe Lightroom 5.3 - for some reason when I'm editing photographs, or just importing them, I get random BSOD. The errors are also changing from KMODE_ ... to critical error, to WHEA_... First I thought it was the Kingston USB media reader, the most recent addition to the system, but crashes still occur when the device is not attached.
My second thought was maybe the newly attached keyboard, the CM QuickFire TK - again, same crashes when another keyboard is attached. I'm really really desperate. Since these crashes almost only occurred during a login, gaming or Lightroom usage, my opinion was that it must have been the graphics card. I uninstalled the ATI drivers, removed the card, re-seated my older Nvidia card, installed Nvidia drivers... still crashes.
Working in Lightroom becomes virtually impossible since it crashes the whole system, and as an amateur photographer, that's a real pain. I hope it's a driver issue, because I cannot afford to buy a new system at this moment. (and I hope it's nothing to do with AMD, since it was my first AMD build)
On a side note, but perhaps irrelevant: it's my second AsRock mainboard - and it's the second time it seems it's an unstable system (my previous i5 build had hickups from time to time, something I never had with Asus/Gigabyte and Intel as system before).
I attached a dump of all files, using the SF diagnostic tool. Here's a screenshot of BlueScreenViewer. As you can see in the screenshot - I'm confident that most, if not all dumps, were a result of using Lightroom.
As far as to my knowledge: BIOS is up-to-date (latest available version from AsRock)Latest version of AMD Catalyst software/drivers are installedInstalled all drivers for motherboard components (LAN, audio, etc.) from AsRock's websiteUpdates are set to install automatically for Windows - so I assume I have most recent updates for Windows 8.1
And I've been working since 14:54 (most recent dump file) without any problem - but then again, I haven't opened up Lightroom.
I can't find an option to set Adobe Acrobat (either Reader or Pro) "View on top", i.e., keep the Acrobat window visible at all times even when opening other windows (for example if I want to view a PDF while doing something else). Is it possible with Acrobat?

I've noticed that some YouTube videos are choppy and stutters with IE11 so I decided to downgrade the Flash player to more stabile version like 10.3 but this sucker doesn't allow me. Why the heck M$ didn't include a remove option? I don't know which one is worse, M$ for implementing such stubborn crap in Windows or Sadobe for releasing more and more crappy versions.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAll those programs that are present when you first open a Windows 8 desktop like Reader, Photos, etc. You know, the one's you want to replaces real fast with good programs have stopped working. Not that I want to use them or depend on them but it does bug me they all stopped. I don't see a way to uninstall them if they are not going to work. If they have to remain on the pc I would like them to work in any case.
why all these minimum use programs have stopped. And if the fix is drastic of course I wouldn't attempt it.
I've noticed that SmartCard service is running at my Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit system. I don't use smart cards and don't need it. I've also read Black Viper's Windows 8.1 Services guidance and noted that this service was presented there as disabled in every configuration.
Somehow, on my machine it has been automatically enabled. My machine (Dell Precision M4800) has a fingerprint reader - can it be related to this service? I'd rather expect it to be related to Windows Biometric Services yet this one has always been disabled on my machine...
Is it safe for me to disable SmartCard service or what other function / application may need it?
I keep wondering if it's necessary to have Adobe Flash player as a stand alone on Windows 8,
or is already included with Windows 8 ?
I am having trouble trying to find out how to keep adobe file showing on top of program in use.
As an example, I use an on line portal for my work and when I click on the program button to view an invoice it opens in an adobe file but then stays behind the program screen, I then have to go to the task bar to bring it to the front so it can be printed.

View 7 Replies View RelatedWIN 8 - i tried to find the controls/settings for Adobe Flash Player - don't want all those animated ads running - does my browser (Google Chrome) affect that or Internet Explorer (which is now loading as MSN and i can't seem to change that-happened after i accidentally removed IE from taskbar - now when loaded from ''tiles' it loads MSN) anyway .. i was able to go to CP/downloads & saw i did 'disable' Adobe Player but the adds still run. Is there more than one type of ''adobe'' ?
