Apps / Software :: Installing Adobe Reader In Windows 8.1
Jul 14, 2014
Gateway SX2185-UB37
AMD E1-2500 APU
Radeon HD 8240 graphics
500 MB HD
4GB RAM (I upgraded to 8GB after noticing Windows 8.1 was running way too slow on this machine)
problem: installing Adobe Acrobat Reader
error: running the installer from go.adobe.com/reader from within firefox or IE
I get error saying "invalid function in Dynamic Link Library C:windowssystem32dxtrans.dl error window appears and continues to appear over and over after pressing OK until you either restart the computer, or somehow close the running task, but I've yet to figure out how to get to the task manager since this WIndows 8 stuff is still very new to me. I keep telling her for now she can download the pdf's and use the built in adobe reader, but apparently she's been having issues with that too lately. I think she wants to be able to read them in her web browser but without being able to install adobe reader she's not able to do that so.

Not sure why, have never experienced this in previous versions of Windows, but I can't seem to get pdf files to open in Firefox.
Using the latest version of firefox, video drivers, and adobe reader.
Got adobe reader installed fine, and adobe flash player installed fine, but still pdf files won't open in firefox.
when I click on a pdf file to open it in the browser, it doesn't do anything, its like the link to the pdf won't open at all. Happens every time.
Only way I can open pdf's on the web is to right click on the pdf link, click on 'save link as' download it to the computer, and open it in adobe reader.
I can do that, problem is this is my wifes computer, and she's not as computer literate as I am, so she has to ask ME to do all that for her whenever she comes across a PDF document on the web, which happens alot with her taking online classes right now. don't want her to have to call me every time she needs to open a pdf document ya know? especially when its something small like a groupon or something she only needs to view once to print the thing...

Computer is:
Gateway SX2185-UB37
AMD E1 2500 APU
Radon HD 8240
500 GB HD
8 GB DDR3 RAM (had 4 but I put another 4 G stick in there due to windows 8 being soo slow)
Anyway, our problem right now is with PDF documents, she can download & view PDF's if she downloads them, but she's not a computer guru like me and just wants to view them in firefox when she clicks on them inside the browser window, but for some reason PDF's won't load in firefox, and we're not sure why.
Does that functionality require Java or flash or something? otherwise we're not sure what could be causing it. sure we're missing something though. Why PDF's aren't loading in firefox in Windows 8.1?

I hate the PDF reader on windows8. It opens the PDF and I cannot minimize it or put another program in front of it. Is there a way to minimize it or a better pdf reader aside from adobe?

I have Adobe Reader 11.06 installed. I can open a single pdf perfectly well from Explorer, but when I double click on a second pdf to open it, nothing happens (it doesn't open). This only happens when I already have one instance of Adobe Reader open - opening the first pdf works just fine. And if I close the first one, I can open the other file (I just can't open them simultaneously). Opening a second file from Adobe Reader's open file dialogue also works fine.
After some investigation, it seems that when I open multiple PDFs on my SSD (which Windows is installed to), it works perfectly. It only runs into issues when opening PDFs located on another hard drive, which is an issue for me because my Dropbox folder is hosted on a separate hard drive.
All you have to do is disable security measures in Adobe Reader XI (Edit -> Preferences -> Security (Enhanced) -> Sandbox Protection -> Enable Protected Mode at startup -> turn off).

I just downloaded Adobe reader 11, and have been trying to open pdf files from the "My Documents" folder. Specifically files that I have just written and saved from MS Word. Adobe says: "There was an error opening this document. Access denied." However, if I save the file into the Downloads folder, it will open no problem.

I tried to install .NET 3.5 Framework using windows 8 features (turn on or off).
But the window is empty like in the attachment (Image1).
when I tried to install from the Microsoft site it showed a window with two option of skip feature and preparing
after that it was replaced by a window like the one shown in Image2.

I can't find an option to set Adobe Acrobat (either Reader or Pro) "View on top", i.e., keep the Acrobat window visible at all times even when opening other windows (for example if I want to view a PDF while doing something else). Is it possible with Acrobat?

How can I do that properly? I used the uninstaller from Adobe but the residual files in system32 and in sysWow64 those Flash.ocx files and such, I tried Safe mode and other ways, are they needed to remove in order to have a proper reinstall and how to delete them? Access always denied
It has to do with Shockwave Flash Object, in IE, can I remove this add on to let these files be deletable. I managed to move out the Macromed folder out of system32 but so much for it. in syswow64 cant even move out the folder

I am having trouble trying to find out how to keep adobe file showing on top of program in use.
As an example, I use an on line portal for my work and when I click on the program button to view an invoice it opens in an adobe file but then stays behind the program screen, I then have to go to the task bar to bring it to the front so it can be printed.

When selecting FILES and OPEN in apps such as ADOBE PHOTOSHOP (and others) all I can see is silly little fake pics instead of the real one. Very maddening and am unable to figure out how to change it in WINDOWS8. Seems to be a default fixed feature but I surely hope not.

Adobe Fireworks won't start in Windows 8. It worked perfect in Windows 7 but won't anymore. I have tried CS3, CS4 and CS5 (I Dont have CS6) but they all do the same thing... Nothing. I have tried running them in compatibility mode for Windows 7 and XP. Also tried running as administrator but still wont start. Adobe Photoshop and other Adobe Products Work but not Fireworks.

I'm on 64 bit and have 8.1 Pro installed. When I double click a file reader does not open. This wasn't the case before the upgrade. Tried multiple times but it just doesn't open. Went to Task Manager and noticed 8 instances of Acrobat Reader and shut them down all one by one. The files started opening again. After a while again I have to go back to the task manager and close reader which is cumbersome and irritating.

When I open a .pdf it uses the Reader app. I have no problem with that except when I am on a website it opens the pdf in a new half window. Meaning the original site and the .pdf each are in their own side by side window. Yes I can drag it to full but everything I read said it should open full. Or at least that's how I would like it.
I have not found any settings to make it always open full. I should say that if I just open the Reader app on its own it does open full screen.

I have Office Pro 2010 on my 32bit XP Pro desktop. If possible, I'd like to uninstall Offc Pro and install it on my laptop that is running Win 8.1. Can this be done?
My Office Pro is a valid download with key but I only downloaded the 32 bit version and have changed the key one time as the result of a support call to MS soon after installing it on my XP machine.

Any success installing Asus Suite 3 V.10082 64-bit? I just built a new Asus Z97-Deluxe PC running windows 8.1 64-Bit and have tried multiple time installing Asus Aisuite 3, but each time I install it will install into the program files(x86) folder and runs in 32-Bit. Tried Asus support which turned out to be a waste of time.

I can't install new apps or update existing ones.
Each time I attempt to install or update through the app store I receive error message 0x80072ee4 or 080073cff. I tried:
1. Performing a clean boot. (Disabling all non-microsoft services and startup items)
2. Using the SFC /SCANNOW option to verify the integrity of windows files.
3. Clearing C:/Users/Myusername/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows Store and C:/Users/Myusername/AppData/Local/Package to clean the cache files.
4. Clearing C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution and restarting the Windows Update service.
5. Verifying that all windows services are running.
6. Disabling NIS 2013
7. Running troubleshooter
Nothing works. Don't tell me to run the windows restore function.
1. I don't consider that to be a genuine solution. (What if the same thing happens again?)
2. I don't plan on reinstalling all 50 non-windows app store applications.

Windows 8.1 x64
There are some programs that when I install them appear to hang when they're most of the way through the install. A current example is Hotspot Shield.
I've unregistered and reregistered MSIexec, to no effect. I've run sfg/scannow and the system integrity is 100%. When I check the process it appears to be doing something, though so trivial as to be barely worth recording, so I have to assume it's not hung, unless it's marking time. It's certainly not waiting on a write queue.

I always wanted to make a small partition for the OS and use the rest of my HDD to store my apps and files but I couldn't format my PC as I had nowhere to back-up my work projects and files I'll need. So finally, I got an external HDD yesterday so I jumped quick on my PC to back-up my files and format (Note that my DVD reader is broken so I performed a clean install from a Partition where I stored Windows 8.1).
Everything went smooth but whenever I want to install a software or something, it default path is on A: (A: is the symbol of the small partition where I installed the OS). I want to install all my apps and store everything on the C: partition (Which is the main partition that have 550GBs).
I already changed the ProgramFilesDir's on the Regedit but whenever I want to install a software it still shows up as "A:" and even after manually changing it to C: the software doesn't lunch.
-------------------
I'm also having another problem, after installing Windows 8.1, when my PC boots up it asks me from where I'd like to boot (Windows 8.1 or Windows 8). I want to delete that Windows 8 thing so it automatically boots on Windows 8.1.

I'm not using the lists which are available for Hostsman I've just set it up to block Opencandy, but have not had time to test it yet to see if it works.
I'm just wondering if there are any other simple ways to block Opencandy from installing.
I use Peerblock, would it be possible to block Opencandy using this program?
Why can't the lists which are available for Hostsman and Peerblock not block Opencandy as default?

I switched from Win 7 to 8 and everything is perfect except the Store...
Like there wouldn't be a problem of using Microsoft account in Win 8 but every time I turn on my computer or even logout I have to type in stupid password!
Is there any way I can download apps from store without using Microsoft account ?
Or to bypass that stupid password for logging in ? But I more prefer to be not logged in into any type of account to use my pc.

I'm using Windows 8.1, trying to install .NET Framework 3.5 through the "Turn Windows features on or off" menu, and for some reason it won't connect to the update server, but only for this one feature, enabling and disabling everything else works just fine. It spits out error code 0x800F0906. When I go to the support site linked on the error message [URL], it gives me a few things to try. None of them work. When I try the one that apparently fixes the issue for most people, Method 3, the terminal spits out an error about the files not being there [URL]. This error also being covered on the same page as the first, I read through that, made sure everything was good to go, and even tried it with a completely separate Windows 8.1 ISO (what I was originally using was a base Windows 8 ISO), still nothing.
Now, I had this issue a few days ago, and it was stopping me from running a few programs. Having gone through everything I could find on the matter, I decided it was just some sort of file corruption and decided to do a fresh "nuke & pave" reinstall.
