Security :: Encrypted Drive Using Bitlocker - No Prompt To Choose Password
Mar 12, 2013I have a Windows 8 Pro laptop with a single SSD. I just encrypted the entire drive using Bitlocker. The process prompted me to save the recovery key, which I did to an external drive. The encryption was successful but nowhere during the process was I prompted to choose a password. So I have the drive encrypted but when I reboot it does so normally without asking me for a key or password to access the drive.

Nov 17, 2013When Windows 8.1 was released, I upgraded my current Windows 8 installation. Overall, it has been a great experience. However, I've run into a couple of strange problems that I have never had before.
The first problem is, whenever I boot into Windows 8.1, my USB devices don't work right away (keyboard and wireless mouse). It doesn't matter if I restart my computer or have just turned it on. In order to get the keyboard to respond, I have to unplug and plug back in the cord. It's very annoying to have to do this every time I boot Windows.
The second problem is, while Windows is logging in, I get a UAC prompt. The UAC prompt says "Service Control Manager Configuration Tool". This prompt also happens every single time I log on, which is also very annoying.
I have checked my startup programs and have found nothing obvious that could solve these problems, but maybe I'm missing something.
Have these problems happened before? I really would prefer not to do a clean install since everything else is working perfectly and it's not slow at all.
Right Click -> Open On Shortcuts Doesn't Work
Mar 9, 2014I upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate x64 to Windows 8 Pro x64 and then to 8.1 (too many installed programs for a clean install)
Now, when I right click a shortcut and do "Open" or "run as administrator" it does nothing. If I double click it, it works fine. Also, if I try to open a cmd from the bottom left context menu it also doesn't work. I've no problems though to do "open" or "run as administrator" on the actual executable files, the problem is the shortcuts. Obviously there's something in the registry that needs fixing, but I've no idea what. I've tried all the usuals, sfc scanning, ccleaner, etc, but no luck. I tried with shellexview to check what is registered where in the context menu, but I didn't find that very useful either. The same happens in safe mode too.
EDIT:I did assoc .lnk at cmd and returned "lnkfle" and then I did ftype lnkfile and returned that nothing is associated with this. Dunno if that's how it should be in 8, but that's the same winxp returns.

Jun 8, 2012I've been getting a "File Access Denied, You'll need to provide administrator permission to rename this file", popup window even with UAC turned off?
The files in question are shortcuts in the C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms.
It also happens in C:UsersUser-NameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms.
Basically what I'm doing is renaming the title of the tiles/programs displayed on the Metro Start screen. If there is a better way I'm all for that as having to click continue every time is getting old.
DVD Drive Doesn't Appear In File Explorer?
Mar 10, 2014I've recently installed a second DVD drive, and it's not appearing when I open File Explorer. I see it listed in Device Manager, Disk Management, when I click on My Computer, and the drive works fine. Everything is fine except for its absence from File Explorer. how to add it to the list of drives?

Oct 19, 2013I was hoping the update from 8 to 8.1 would fix it but no luck.In a nutshell: Windows search for Files stopped working out of nowhere, searching for Apps/Settings works fine, but searching for Files yield no results, not only that, when I enter a file to search for it just sits there without any info on whether it is searching or not (Just says "Files" and nothing more where it usually would also say "Searching...").
I've been troubleshooting this but no one has had this exact problem, here are the solutions I've tried:
- Going to Indexing Options and manually adding the drives I wish to index to "Index these locations" and allowing for a full index. No results, no "Searching" phrase comes up either.
- Using Microsofts Windows Search Troubleshooter which essentially is supposed to fix problems like database corruption and crashes. Part of the fix is it resets the index (so my drives I added aren't in the list anymore), and it says it has Fixed the issues, but upon trying search: I do get the "searching" phrase, but I get very slow (about 25 seconds) and half-assed results (and only when I hit enter or click the magnifying glass icon), it's no longer a list of files in the search pane that starts to list file suggestions in the search pane. It also doesn't find folders.
Finally what I discovered today was in the Windows Features dialog box there is no Windows Search option (which I know should be there, it's on my laptop running Windows 8). I think this may be the key to all of this.
Maintenance :: Why Doesn't File History Backup Skydrive
Jan 29, 2014I really like the way Skydrive synchronises my folders between my work and home laptops and I have my Skydrive docs available offline. But why is Skydrive excluded from the list of libraries that are backed up by File History. I want to be able to back my docs up onto an external hard drive. Is there no way of doing this? Same with Backup on Windows 7, Skydrive seems to be excluded.

Oct 18, 2013I am getting the errors Could Not Enable File History: The System Cannot Find the File Specified and File History Doesn't Recognize This Drive. I tried deleting the File History folders on the external drive and in the AppData folder (although the File History folders never contain any files, they are always empty). I tried sharing the File History folder on the external drive with Everyone. Nothing has worked.
I've also tried to select another drive or reselect the external drive; I get the message "We found some files you previously copied using File History" and asks if I would like to move them. It won't let me choose No, i.e. choosing No has the same effect as choosing Cancel. If I choose yes, I get an error message saying it can't complete the migration. It seems like I need to reset File History somehow and maybe get rid of these leftover files (although I don't know where they would have come from, because I don't think I've ever turned on File History in the past, but I could be wrong there.) At any rate I don't know where these leftover files would be located because I've already deleted every File History folder I could find (in AppData and on external drive).

Mar 8, 2014Windows 8.1 with Excel 2007. On one PC is it ok but not on another PC:
*a file with xls or xlsx suffix doesn't open as the exe-file of Excel is not found.
*Excel on it self is starting up and after opening the dedicated xls-suffix the file is visible
In configuration / program's /file type linking with xls to the Excel program isn't seen
The doc-suffix is correctly linked to Word 2007...

Choose Own Pictures Folders?
Mar 23, 2014The Pictures Library in the Photos app/tile in Windows 8 doesn't offer me the option to choose my own pictures folders as it does my video ones. It only offers me to create a folder (I don't know where) or to import pictures from a camera or a cell phone, I suppose.
Is there any way for me to pick my own pictures folders instead of having to move my pictures into a Windows default folder only to have to move them again (or lose them)

After Choose Windows 8 It Goes To Blue Recovery Screen
Jan 16, 2013Dual booting Win 7 and Win 8. Win 7 is C: Primary installed first, Win 8 is installed to a primary partition (25GB). I get the blue recovery screen after starting Win 8 from bootloader menu. Win 7 starts fine. I have installed Win 8 on another computer using the same flash so I know the flash is good. First I defraged and cleaned out C: then created the partition. I have installed it on the computer before (preview edition) then removed it(formated D: partition), this is the RTM 9200 build. Did I mention that on the other computer when installed it asked for Key which I temporarily skipped, on this computer however when installed it did not ask for the key. Before the install I ran bootrec /fixmbr, /fixboot and also /rebuildbcd from Win 7 install disk.
I don't think it's a problem with the Win 7 boot loader. My guess is some registry value or other setting or file in Win 7 is preventing normal startup of Win 8. I do believe it's not hardware related. Any thoughts on what could cause this? Could it be the Win 8 bootloader now causing problems and if so how would I fix this issue? Do I need to fix bootloader in Win 8 and should I run the bootrec cmd's from the Win 8 flash this time? Not sure which has taking over now! I have searched in these forums and online for a couple of day's to no avail though references have been made that the Win 8 bootloader has now taken over, if so were does the now functioning bootloader reside - C: or D: (partition) and which one is it Win 7 or Win 8 loader?
8.1 Choose Default Program - Always Gives Error Message
Oct 29, 2013Started using my freshly installed Windows 8.1 Pro this week...When i go to a file (any filetype...i tried like 10..) and click "choose default program..." in the context menu, the following error message will always come up:
Sure i can go to Config panel > Select default programs etc.But this is odd... since i am 100% confident it used to work fine before.I already did a 'sfc /scannow' checkup with an original 8.1 Pro x64 image but it says integrity is completely fine.
Could it be a random piece of software i uninstalled which was perhaps freeware and did not state it was Windows 8 compatible, leaving a cluttered registry key which is affecting this command from my context menu?
Alt X Shortcut Not Allowing To Choose Letter Option
Jan 21, 2013Why I am not able to choose the underlined letter when hitting alt-x which brings up the quick list of shortcuts? I was able to before and now it no longer allows it. I have to select w/the mouse. No huge deal but want things to be how they were. I 've also tried using Win 8's "refresh" to no avail.

Feb 15, 2013I'm dual booting Windows 8 and Linux Mint 14 right now with GRUB2 as the MBR. I changed the MBR to Windows, but didn't like the menu screen so I went back to GRUB2. Now, when I select Windows 8 from GRUB2, it has the choose operating system screen and it boots after 5 seconds or if I select it. I used EasyBCD to add the boot entry for Linux Mint prior to re-installing GRUB2 as the MBR. Then deleting the boot entry after switching back to GRUB2. I know on Windows XP, you would edit the boot.ini file located in the root of the c: driver, but on vista and later, I'm not sure how to edit the bcdedit.exe file in c:windowssystem32. When I type the command into command prompt, it displays all the information inside the file, but I'm not sure what command to use to fix the issue.

Feb 1, 2013I previously used ubuntu in my Windows 8 Pro and Windows got many errors so i deleted the folder of ubuntu..did not uninstalled and all that. now it shows ubuntu on OS choose Screen. then i thought installing Ubuntu would overwrite the existing one..but sadly i have two Ubuntu Choice..one is empty and another is working.
Now, how can i edit that screens setting. by setting i dont mean going to advance setting and choosing default os. I want to edit like in Windows 7, boot.ini file.or If there's any other way to remove that empty Ubuntu from the OS choice Option

Feb 17, 2013My PC is a dual boot system which had Win XP on disk1 and Win 7 on disk2.
When I installed Windows 8 several months ago, I chose to install it on disk1 and completely remove Win XP.
Everything works fine but my log-in screen now contains 4 start-up tabs instead of just 2 (see below):
Windows 8
Windows XP
Windows 7 (volume 1)
Windows 7
The only tabs which are valid are Windows 8 and Windows 7 (volume 1), the other 2 are non functional. How can I edit this screen and remove these tabs?
Command Prompt Needs To Run Anything As Admin
May 15, 2014I seem to be having a problem when command prompt needs to run anything as an admin.
This happens whenever it feels it needs to do so, like when setting a program to run as admin myself, or running an installer, like the setup for firefox (I'm in chrome right now, but I happen to prefer firefox)
Basically, whenever it needs to run anything, it'll open up to the user account controls window in this picture:
Upon clicking yes, it opens the command prompt you see in the left of the image for a split second, then closes. (it took many attempts to get a clear shot using printscreen, and I did edit it to have the UAC prompt in the same image to save space)
I'm guessing a manual regedit of some kind, as running any program is obviously blocked by the problem itself. (I cannot install any fixing programs, and anything that needs to run as admin to work is out as well).
Cannot Run Command Prompt As Admin
Oct 27, 2013I need to execute the command prompt as admin. When I try to do it the command prompt window doesn't open and there are no errors. If I run the command prompt without admin privs it works, but I then can't do what I need to do in the admin window.
Note: I am running Windows 8.1.
Dell :: No Prompt For F2 During Startup?
Dec 11, 2013At the risk of making a fool of myself, where is the prompt to enter the BIOS on an Inspiron 660?
According to the user manual
"During POST when the Dell logo is displayed watch for the F2 prompt to appear and then press immediately."
The logo displays but no prompt or beeps or else anything in fact but the pc will boot up into Windows and appears to operate correctly.
