I have been on Win 8 Consumer Pre and Release Pre... I love the 2 menus and love the reach across productivity/business and basic consumer with an apps loaded menu. BUT! How about giving us the option on what we want to load up at the start instead of needing a desktop tile on the menu.

Why I am not able to choose the underlined letter when hitting alt-x which brings up the quick list of shortcuts? I was able to before and now it no longer allows it. I have to select w/the mouse. No huge deal but want things to be how they were. I 've also tried using Win 8's "refresh" to no avail.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI previously used ubuntu in my Windows 8 Pro and Windows got many errors so i deleted the folder of ubuntu..did not uninstalled and all that. now it shows ubuntu on OS choose Screen. then i thought installing Ubuntu would overwrite the existing one..but sadly i have two Ubuntu Choice..one is empty and another is working.
Now, how can i edit that screens setting. by setting i dont mean going to advance setting and choosing default os. I want to edit like in Windows 7, boot.ini file.or If there's any other way to remove that empty Ubuntu from the OS choice Option
The Troubleshoot icon that should be under the 'Advanced Startup' Option is missing. System is a new Dell Latitude 10 ST2 Tablet running Windows 8. Have access to 9 other identical tablets, all configured the same and they all have the Troubleshoot Option. Have tried multiple methods of getting to "Advanced Startup" display (including Safe mode, 'shutdown /r /o', etc.), but all result in only having the 'Continue', 'Use a Device', and 'Turn Off your PC' options - No Troubleshoot. Other than missing this icon, system is working fine. Shy of wiping the disk and starting over.
View 4 Replies View RelatedLately, when I start my laptop I'm logged in as "Other User" and I don't know why. It started doing this about two weeks ago. I can use the computer just fine logged in as "other user", but it's just bothersome. What caused this and more importantly, how to make it so I'm logged in under the primary user? And fwiw, no one else uses this computer and I didn't even know there was an "other user" setup.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to boot from USB in order to start using Ubuntu but my problem is that when I go to the advanced settings - troubleshoot - there is no UEFI Firmware Settings, which, from what I have gathered is necessary to be able to boot Ubuntu from my USB flash drive. So far the solution that most people have is that there is no UEFI on that particular computer/type of windows 8, and on the startup screen to press f2, f11, esc, etc but there is no indicator as to what key is is on the ACER splash screen, similar to this. scn101.jpg
Therefor, I cannot get into BIOS?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows 8.1 (standard/ home edition) and can't download a couple .exe files. I get "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this folder". errors. I'm the only user on this computer and have administrator access.
The file resides on mediafire and via my ipad I was able to manage to transfer it to dropbox, but I still get the same error. The filename (partial) is created but no further downloading is done.
I can't take ownership of the file-- it doesn't exist on my computer yet.
I can't change the local security policy (I understand this is only available in Win 8 Pro version).
UAC is already disabled as much as I can figure (via the slider set to never notify).
Short of setting up a super admin account (would this even work?)
I have had to reinstall my laptop and now i'm having some trouble finding the tweak to remove the "insert a smartcard" option from my logon box when i try to connect to an external computer with the remote desktop client.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy problem is simply this, when i boot my pc into windows the boot takes maybe 3 seconds to desktop, but the icons on the desktop do not appear for another 10 seconds. The same can be said for the icons in the start menu. The biggest problem is that even if i run the icon such as firefox, before the icon has fully loaded, the program will not run. No programs will run until 13 seconds after boot once the icons have loaded.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I've been experiencing this pretty much from the first day after installing Windows 8.1.
It goes as follows:
1. I power on the PC (or restart), windows boots up, I put in the password and it is fairly quick to enter destkop mode.
2. Now this is when my issue occurs, the startup programs may take up to 2 minutes to start load.
This is not because my computer is slow or anything like that, it almost seems like there is a set delay and only then my programs are allowed to start loading. Once they start loading, it only takes couple of seconds. The problem is, they won't start - only after I hang in destkop for about a minute or two.
So upon entering desktop from initial startup, all my icons are missing. The loading symbol shows if i move my cursor over the taskbar at the bottom. If I CTRl-ALT-DEL and signout i takes a minute but than i can sign in and it works fine. Im not getting any BSOD and this occurs about 1/3rd of the time. Also resetting does not solve the issue. I couldn't find anything about blank/empty desktop screens via google.

I am using the Classic Shell also. I have the latest 8.1.
Dual booting Win 7 and Win 8. Win 7 is C: Primary installed first, Win 8 is installed to a primary partition (25GB). I get the blue recovery screen after starting Win 8 from bootloader menu. Win 7 starts fine. I have installed Win 8 on another computer using the same flash so I know the flash is good. First I defraged and cleaned out C: then created the partition. I have installed it on the computer before (preview edition) then removed it(formated D: partition), this is the RTM 9200 build. Did I mention that on the other computer when installed it asked for Key which I temporarily skipped, on this computer however when installed it did not ask for the key. Before the install I ran bootrec /fixmbr, /fixboot and also /rebuildbcd from Win 7 install disk.
I don't think it's a problem with the Win 7 boot loader. My guess is some registry value or other setting or file in Win 7 is preventing normal startup of Win 8. I do believe it's not hardware related. Any thoughts on what could cause this? Could it be the Win 8 bootloader now causing problems and if so how would I fix this issue? Do I need to fix bootloader in Win 8 and should I run the bootrec cmd's from the Win 8 flash this time? Not sure which has taking over now! I have searched in these forums and online for a couple of day's to no avail though references have been made that the Win 8 bootloader has now taken over, if so were does the now functioning bootloader reside - C: or D: (partition) and which one is it Win 7 or Win 8 loader?

View 8 Replies View RelatedThe Pictures Library in the Photos app/tile in Windows 8 doesn't offer me the option to choose my own pictures folders as it does my video ones. It only offers me to create a folder (I don't know where) or to import pictures from a camera or a cell phone, I suppose.
Is there any way for me to pick my own pictures folders instead of having to move my pictures into a Windows default folder only to have to move them again (or lose them)
I tried downloading AutoCAD on my laptop, but got an error message. I removed the McAfee which came with Windows, but no luck. I then also removed AVG and it managed to download.
I've then attempted to restart, however the 'Toshiba Leading Innovation' screen simply kept flashing at the start up and didn't continue.
After approximately 15 minutes of flashing, it's now stopped and the page is static.
It's been just over 20 minutes total now, and the page continues to be static with the fan making more noise than usual.
I've powered down twice, but this keeps happening...
Should I re-install windows?
downloaded some software on laptop which required to disconnect from the internet and run a script and I noticed that this turned off the virus checker / firewall etc. I decided I would insert the Windows 8 recovery disk and start again, however as the hard drive is partitioned this has only wiped c: and left everything on the d: drive. How can I start again so nothing remains in my laptop.

Your computer from starting before a certain time or the operating system from logging you in before a certain time.
As an example, say I wanted to limit access to my computer before 9am how could you go about this?

View 8 Replies View RelatedStarted using my freshly installed Windows 8.1 Pro this week...When i go to a file (any filetype...i tried like 10..) and click "choose default program..." in the context menu, the following error message will always come up:
Sure i can go to Config panel > Select default programs etc.But this is odd... since i am 100% confident it used to work fine before.I already did a 'sfc /scannow' checkup with an original 8.1 Pro x64 image but it says integrity is completely fine.
Could it be a random piece of software i uninstalled which was perhaps freeware and did not state it was Windows 8 compatible, leaving a cluttered registry key which is affecting this command from my context menu?
