View 9 RepliesI never like upgrades, so am planning on a format (Samsung SSD) and a clean install of Win 8.1 from the image I downloaded.
However I have one (biggish to me) concern, I still like to use a program called (Ex7forW8exe) this gives me the Windows 7 lookalike/classic shell, Start button and Start Menu etc, so What program works with Windows 8.1 ?
The latest version of Classic Shell supports Windows 8 Consumer Preview. The new features are:
A customizable start button. You can pick from Classic, Aero and Metro styles, or select your own image. Unlike Start8 and ViStart, this is a real start button. It can extend beyond the taskbar, and works well for any taskbar position, even in auto-hide mode.A new Metro skin for the start menu. For people who like Metro, but not the start screen. All settings are updated to reflect the changes to Windows 8. For example the status bar settings are gone, because the status bar in Windows 8's Explorer can't be customized. The check for new version is more responsive and can be disabled during installation.

The loss of the Classic Shell toolbar in Windows Explorer is still puzzling me.
I've been through all the Classic Shell options (I think!) and messed around with Windows Explorer, but after installing 8.1 the toolbar seems to have disappeared.
I used to have all the View buttons pinned to the bar and I'm really missing it. I know they can be put in the Quick Access Bar, but it's not as usable/fast as the Classic Shell version (the change as hovering I also find very annoying).
EDIT: Just realise I hadn't checked the version I was using. It's 4.0.4 and re-checking the developers site I've now realised that they're up to 4.0.6 ------ Could this be the issue?
I seem to remember that 4.0.6 was not yet stable, or have I dreamt that - I think I probably have
I find that I am using the Classic Shell less, but still want to have the format available. My problem is that every time I reboot my computer, I have to reset the Classic Shell settings.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if we have a way to customize the Start Orb/Button with this software? I downgraded to an older version because the newest one had a look that literally appears to be the Shell gasoline logo! At least with this version it simulates the Windows color scheme.
I am using Version 3.6.7. The current version is 3.6.8. but it has a blued out background with the Shell logo prominent.
If it were not for Classic Shell I would not be using Windows 8 at all.
My bios shows uefi boot option but no uefi shell... I enabled uefi boot option and booted my dvd it asked me to partition my hd using a GPT format... I even did so so... but when I run
Code:
bcdedit /enum
In elevated command prompt it shows me this
Code:
Windows Boot Manager
--------------------
identifier {bootmgr}
device partition=DeviceHarddiskVolume1
description Windows Boot Manager
[Code] .....
The bold line means my system does not boot from efi... isn't it?
So, i have installed classic shell, newest version, to add start menu, disable charm bar. But, this program doesnt actualy disable them, it just visually removes things, i still can open charm bar with shortcuts, like with touchpad - i have to cross though touchpad a little bit from the very right to left, and charm bar opens ... So, how to disable these shortcuts ?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have Classic Shell set up on two Window 8 machines, a desktop and an ASUS Q200e laptop. And it is thing of beauty on one machine but less so on the other. The desktop works just fine but on the ASUS I cannot skip the Metro screen. At boot, the Metro shows up for a long, long time before Classic Shell shows up. Yes, I have the 'skip Metro' item checked . On the desktop Classic Shell shows up immediately without showing any trace of Metro. I have compared the settings on both machines one by one and they are identical as far as I can see.
I made a Registry edit to produce a Classic Shell service log and here is the content of that log.
0x50F664F7 Starting service
0x50F664F7 Session 0 (4)
0x50F664F7 Session 1 (0)
0x50F664F7 Starting process: C:Program FilesClassic ShellClassicStartMenu.exe -startup
I believe the problem has something to do with one of the ASUS programs that gets loaded at startup. The OS is the one installed and shipped with the computer while the desktop is a clean install from a DVD.
I have a Toshiba laptop running Win 8.1. Things were fine when I shut down lsst night. Now I have no task bar, now way to get to my programs and the classic icon is gone so I cannot turn it off. Also I cannot open Win 8 start page and the symbols do not appear on the left hand side.

== Version 3.5.1 general release (Jun, 2012): - Enabled the custom start button for Windows 7 and added more settings - Added a setting to skip the Metro screen on startup - Improved compatibility with the IE10's Enhanced Protected Mode - Fixed some bugs found in the previous version
I've tested it and confirm that it skips the Metro screen.
I need to switch back and forth between an open pdf file, MS Word, and websites. I can open the pdf file fine. But if I switch to another task, the pdf file disappears. There is no icon for the pdf file on the taskbar. So then I have to open it again from scratch. What am I doing wrong?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a problem which started recently. The problem is that everything closes unexpectedly. I am using the classic desktop environment to use this system and all the 'apps' I use a classing Windows programs.
Randomly all of the programs that are running on the machine close down without warning (And I mean ALL of them, even explorer.exe). I know that this has not been caused by a recent installation of a program as I have not installed anything recently. I also checked the computer with an Anti-Virus software as that could have been a cause but there wasn't anything.
My wife has a new Asus X750j Laptop.
I've spent the last day and a half setting it up.Now I want to make a system image of the C: drive using Paragon.
I do this from a bootable DVD, but it isn't set to boot to the DVD first in the boot order.
I've tried tapping the F11, F8, Del, Esc and F2 keys and it just boots into Windows 8.
My computer which has an ASUS motherboard, shows a message when I boot, saying select "Delete" to boot into the UEFI Bios.
But I can't seem to get either a boot menu of the bios option on the laptop.
when I start an application (such as word, excel, task manager, etc.) from start menu, windows goes to the classic desktop and runs the application itself. Once I have finished using it and close, it returns to the classic desktop, not to start menu.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have windows 8.1 and downloading the 13.12 Drivers gave me this program called "AMD Feature Manager". It has a green AMD logo and shows up when I right click anywhere in the desktop, right under "AMD Catalyst Control Center". Whenever I click on it - the program just loads AMD CCC. It seems pretty redundant to include this since I have "AMD Catalyst Control Center" right above it that does the same exact thing. Is there registry edit that can get rid of the option in the Context Menu or can I just uninstall it completely?

I have ASUS S400CA windows 8.1(upgraded from windows8). When I right click for openwith for jpg,png files, I get option of opening with Photo gallery. But in my Dell venue pro tablet with Windows 8.1, I don't get this option. Any way to get it in dell venue 8 pro?
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter creating a UEFI bootable USB thumb drive with Rufus (using Windows 8.1 Enterprise ISO x64), for a Dell Optiplex 3010 (configured as UEFI only, no CSM, latest firmware version, Windows 8 installed), I didn't see a USB boot option, so I tried to add one manually. Unfortunately I erased the existing boot option (boot manager) by mistake. Although there were two boot options for PXE booting, the machine will not start anymore, even when there is an active WDS server on the network.
I also see Led's 2 and 3 lighting up, meaning according to the manual 'hardware ok but bios possibly damaged/corrupt'.
I understand I cannot start the machine from a bios boot disk because of GPT partitioning, and the UEFI USB boot disk I made might be corrupt (as it didn't show up as a boot option), however I don't understand why it won't boot from the PXE network card, as these boot options are still there.
I purchased a new laptop with Windows 8 OS pre-installed and SKYPE application pre-installed as well.
This new way of Skype behavior is very annoying. How I may return into classical use of Skype, as it was in Windows XP and Windows 7, where I had a Skype shortcut on my desktop and clicking the Shortcut opens the Skype application directly in the desktop.
When Skype in Windows 8 opens in a new lay out feature is very uncomfortable and unfamiliar. how to get back to the previous classical way of behavior for Skype.
I have installed Blue 8.1 on a separate drive in my system along side 8.0. When I restart the 8.0 boots unless I manually select the 8.1 drive in bios. How can I alter the Boot menu to add the option to boot from either OS?

But wait, it get interesting: Even though the weather app crashes, I have a live tile option on for that app, and it shows me weather nicely.

I have been on Win 8 Consumer Pre and Release Pre... I love the 2 menus and love the reach across productivity/business and basic consumer with an apps loaded menu. BUT! How about giving us the option on what we want to load up at the start instead of needing a desktop tile on the menu.

I'm thinking a second HDD and something like Acronis and bypass the MS backup tools. Or perhaps boot from the install DVD and use Macrium Reflect.

I suppose if Windows to Go is being used on different computers and the idea is to use the external device totally then it obviously doesn't make sense to store a file on the Host PC's HDD.
Anyway two screenshots -- you can see the Windows to Go doesn't have a fast boot option. Ist screenshot is from Windows to Go -- both running Windows 8.1 enterprise update 1 x-64 on REAL (not Virtual) Machines.
I have had to reinstall my laptop and now i'm having some trouble finding the tweak to remove the "insert a smartcard" option from my logon box when i try to connect to an external computer with the remote desktop client.
