Apps / Software :: Classic Shell Gets Lost With Reboot
Dec 3, 2013
I find that I am using the Classic Shell less, but still want to have the format available. My problem is that every time I reboot my computer, I have to reset the Classic Shell settings.
I never like upgrades, so am planning on a format (Samsung SSD) and a clean install of Win 8.1 from the image I downloaded.
However I have one (biggish to me) concern, I still like to use a program called (Ex7forW8exe) this gives me the Windows 7 lookalike/classic shell, Start button and Start Menu etc, so What program works with Windows 8.1 ?
The latest version of Classic Shell supports Windows 8 Consumer Preview. The new features are:
A customizable start button. You can pick from Classic, Aero and Metro styles, or select your own image. Unlike Start8 and ViStart, this is a real start button. It can extend beyond the taskbar, and works well for any taskbar position, even in auto-hide mode.A new Metro skin for the start menu. For people who like Metro, but not the start screen. All settings are updated to reflect the changes to Windows 8. For example the status bar settings are gone, because the status bar in Windows 8's Explorer can't be customized. The check for new version is more responsive and can be disabled during installation.
The loss of the Classic Shell toolbar in Windows Explorer is still puzzling me.
I've been through all the Classic Shell options (I think!) and messed around with Windows Explorer, but after installing 8.1 the toolbar seems to have disappeared.
I used to have all the View buttons pinned to the bar and I'm really missing it. I know they can be put in the Quick Access Bar, but it's not as usable/fast as the Classic Shell version (the change as hovering I also find very annoying).
EDIT: Just realise I hadn't checked the version I was using. It's 4.0.4 and re-checking the developers site I've now realised that they're up to 4.0.6 ------ Could this be the issue?
I seem to remember that 4.0.6 was not yet stable, or have I dreamt that - I think I probably have
I was wondering if we have a way to customize the Start Orb/Button with this software? I downgraded to an older version because the newest one had a look that literally appears to be the Shell gasoline logo! At least with this version it simulates the Windows color scheme.
I am using Version 3.6.7. The current version is 3.6.8. but it has a blued out background with the Shell logo prominent.
If it were not for Classic Shell I would not be using Windows 8 at all.
So, i have installed classic shell, newest version, to add start menu, disable charm bar. But, this program doesnt actualy disable them, it just visually removes things, i still can open charm bar with shortcuts, like with touchpad - i have to cross though touchpad a little bit from the very right to left, and charm bar opens ... So, how to disable these shortcuts ?
I have Classic Shell set up on two Window 8 machines, a desktop and an ASUS Q200e laptop. And it is thing of beauty on one machine but less so on the other. The desktop works just fine but on the ASUS I cannot skip the Metro screen. At boot, the Metro shows up for a long, long time before Classic Shell shows up. Yes, I have the 'skip Metro' item checked . On the desktop Classic Shell shows up immediately without showing any trace of Metro. I have compared the settings on both machines one by one and they are identical as far as I can see.
I made a Registry edit to produce a Classic Shell service log and here is the content of that log.
I believe the problem has something to do with one of the ASUS programs that gets loaded at startup. The OS is the one installed and shipped with the computer while the desktop is a clean install from a DVD.
I have a Toshiba laptop running Win 8.1. Things were fine when I shut down lsst night. Now I have no task bar, now way to get to my programs and the classic icon is gone so I cannot turn it off. Also I cannot open Win 8 start page and the symbols do not appear on the left hand side.
== Version 3.5.1 general release (Jun, 2012): - Enabled the custom start button for Windows 7 and added more settings - Added a setting to skip the Metro screen on startup - Improved compatibility with the IE10's Enhanced Protected Mode - Fixed some bugs found in the previous version
I've tested it and confirm that it skips the Metro screen.
I need to switch back and forth between an open pdf file, MS Word, and websites. I can open the pdf file fine. But if I switch to another task, the pdf file disappears. There is no icon for the pdf file on the taskbar. So then I have to open it again from scratch. What am I doing wrong?
I purchased a new laptop with Windows 8 OS pre-installed and SKYPE application pre-installed as well.
This new way of Skype behavior is very annoying. How I may return into classical use of Skype, as it was in Windows XP and Windows 7, where I had a Skype shortcut on my desktop and clicking the Shortcut opens the Skype application directly in the desktop.
When Skype in Windows 8 opens in a new lay out feature is very uncomfortable and unfamiliar. how to get back to the previous classical way of behavior for Skype.
I have a problem which started recently. The problem is that everything closes unexpectedly. I am using the classic desktop environment to use this system and all the 'apps' I use a classing Windows programs.
Randomly all of the programs that are running on the machine close down without warning (And I mean ALL of them, even explorer.exe). I know that this has not been caused by a recent installation of a program as I have not installed anything recently. I also checked the computer with an Anti-Virus software as that could have been a cause but there wasn't anything.
I have stored many videos, contacts, notes, music files and more on my ipad. Unfortunately, I lost my some files on it owing to my wrong operation. Now I am looking for the ways how to get them back quickly, but it is failed. How to recover these lost files from iPad on Mac computer? 100 coins will be added!
PS: I just used Vibosoft iPhone/iPad/iPod Data Recovery tool, it works perfectly, it also work for my iPhone 4s, here is the guide: how to restore lost pictures from iPhone without backup.
I have had my *new* computer for quite some time now, but from the very start, my Windows store has never worked. Each time I tried installing an app, I would get some freaky error (I can't remember which). I mainly noticed this when I tried updating to '8.1 or installing any app. When I try to, it stays saying 'Pending'. I go to the start screen (still 'pending'), so I click on the app, to see it's progression. When I do, it says the app is downloading, then it throws back an error. I can't remember what the error was, and I can't find out (since I can't even get into the store).
**Things to note >I can't get into the store, because it remains at the store's splash screen. I got in once, but it came up with a screen saying it (the store) isn't available. >It has been like this ever since I got my computer
I usually reboot my computer once to three times a year. Every time I reboot my computer and reinstall windows 8 and then resign in with my Microsoft I.D. that I use for my computer it never remembers or syncs the apps that I have downloaded from the Microsoft Store app.
My question is, are any of the apps that I download or purchase from the Microsoft Store app remembered, stored or synced with the Microsoft Store in the cloud etc or do I have to redownload everything again and again and again every time I reinstall windows 8?
This problem happens to me right after the installation of Stardock's Start8 or another app called StartIsBack. It could be those 2 apps or it could be something else I don't know.
The problem is, after a reboot, all of a sudden, the icons lose their image and they just become blank white files, if I right click on a file for example to Run As Administrator or anything else, the whole context menu doesn't appear and Explorer just freezes until I force restart
This happened to me in 8 diff. formats / fresh install I finally gave up and just reverted back to Windows 7. Could it be those start menu replacement apps or perhaps some dodgy windows updates?
When installing something and the software doesn't ask for a reboot during installation, do I really need to reboot the computer? For me it's an old habit because so many people say that problems can occur if you don't reboot after installing something.
One would like to think that later versions of Windows, especially Windows 8, can handle software installs without a reboot. Why I have to, or don't have to reboot my computer after I've installed something?
I would like to know how to enter the EFI Shell. After this, I would like to know also what is the command to "boot" partition with Windows 8.1 (not installation, but boot to install)
Is there a way to run a more CLASSIC version of windows in windows 8? Like windows 7, I'm having a hard time navigating windows 8. Don't like it at all!!!
how to migrate my electronic database of my personal CD collection from my old Windows XP Home Edition computer to my new one, which runs on Windows 8. I originally downloaded the software in 2003 and it now contains details of my extensive classical CD collection. The original designer and licensor of Classic Collector (which is very much a one-man-band) is no longer able to service enquiries owing to illness. I understand it is now available as a free download, but am not sure how much use that is to me as I already have a database containing several hundred 'covers' (CDs or CD sets) and several thousand individual music items.
I had win7 and I would right click on the desktop hit Personalize, in Personalize i would chose Windows Classic in Basic and High Contrast Themes but i just upgraded to win8 and used the win7 shell thing my brother told me about mostly everything looks like 7 but I have 8 cool but i cant get the folders to look the way i like them, the 7 shell didnt do it, is there a way to get my old folder look back?
Or is there a way to take files from win7 and add them to win8 so that i could get back to Windows Classic folders in Personalize?
I'm trying to set up a dual boot system with Windows 8, (already installed on a new laptop), and Win 7.
Following instructions from a forum thread I got as far as downloading oscdimg.exe into the Win7_ISO directory.
However whatever I try, full path, etc., I get this error Code: oscdimg.exe : The term 'oscdimg.exe' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operableprogram. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.
The command I am trying to run is Code: PS C:Win7 ISO> oscdimg -w4 -os -lWin_7_x64_UEFI_ISO9660 -m -o -n -pEF -e -bc:Win7 ISOefimicrosoftootefisys.bin c:Win7 ISO c:Win_7_x64_UEFI_ISO9660.iso
Every time I go to control panel and then hardware and then to touchpad settings I get a crash after making whatever change I want and clicking OK to finish and close. I don't know what the shell common dll is or why it fails but it gets old.
when I start an application (such as word, excel, task manager, etc.) from start menu, windows goes to the classic desktop and runs the application itself. Once I have finished using it and close, it returns to the classic desktop, not to start menu.
I did a clean install of 8.1 RTM yesterday and have a problem with Weather App. About 20x per second I get error id 10016 when I launch the app. It seems to be saying that my user does not have rights to launch "Immersive Shell" local server. From what I can see however this is picked up from defaults which do allow launch.
I've not changed any permissions as I don't really understand DCOM but do these setting look correct?
I made my own windows replacement shell, but im having trouble finding out where to replace it at , in windows xp all i had to do was go to regedit find windows explorer and replace it to some thing like this C:myprogramame.exe and then when i restart the computer my name.exe opens instead of windows explorer. How i can do this or even if i can on windows 8, its a lot deference then xp, Iv been an xp user for a long time and just went to windows 8 so im not fmiller with 8 yet.
I was trying to adjust my recording volume settings and realised that I couldn't access them at all. I can access volume mixer, recording devices and playback devices but as soon as I click properties I get an error "windows shell common dll has stopped working" checking for solutions. No solutions are found.
In the event log I have this: --------------------------- Log Name: Application Source: Application Error Date: 24/12/2013 14:45:38 Event ID: 1000 Task Category: (100) Level: Error
[Code] .....
I have updated the sound drivers and this does not solve the issue.
I have run sfc /scannow and get this error: Windows Resources Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I checked the CBS.log and mmsys.cpl is in the log:
2013-12-24 15:52:11, Info CSI 000002cc Hashes for file member SystemRootWinSxSamd64_microsoft-windows-mmsys_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.16384_none_4f2e2a4bb3222341mmsys.cpl do not match actual file [l:18{9}]"mmsys.cpl" :

There are also lots of other files with errors. I think this was caused by my faulty SSD and when I re-imaged back to my new drive, these errors are still present.
Do I need to re-install windows or can I repair install without losing my profile and data? I'd rather repair than re-install.
When I switched to a Windows 8 laptop from my MacBook, my iPod Classic is not recognized by the Win 8 machine. I've tried to copy and paste music files from the HD to the iPod, but once the iPod is ejected, no music shows up on the iPod. I've downloaded iTunes, which seems to recognize when the iPod is plugged in, but I haven't been able to move any music from the HD to the iPod.
