I've tested it and confirm that it skips the Metro screen.
I have Classic Shell set up on two Window 8 machines, a desktop and an ASUS Q200e laptop. And it is thing of beauty on one machine but less so on the other. The desktop works just fine but on the ASUS I cannot skip the Metro screen. At boot, the Metro shows up for a long, long time before Classic Shell shows up. Yes, I have the 'skip Metro' item checked . On the desktop Classic Shell shows up immediately without showing any trace of Metro. I have compared the settings on both machines one by one and they are identical as far as I can see.
I made a Registry edit to produce a Classic Shell service log and here is the content of that log.

I believe the problem has something to do with one of the ASUS programs that gets loaded at startup. The OS is the one installed and shipped with the computer while the desktop is a clean install from a DVD.
I was wondering if we have a way to customize the Start Orb/Button with this software? I downgraded to an older version because the newest one had a look that literally appears to be the Shell gasoline logo! At least with this version it simulates the Windows color scheme.
I am using Version 3.6.7. The current version is 3.6.8. but it has a blued out background with the Shell logo prominent.
If it were not for Classic Shell I would not be using Windows 8 at all.
So, i have installed classic shell, newest version, to add start menu, disable charm bar. But, this program doesnt actualy disable them, it just visually removes things, i still can open charm bar with shortcuts, like with touchpad - i have to cross though touchpad a little bit from the very right to left, and charm bar opens ... So, how to disable these shortcuts ?

Now I have no task bar, now way to get to my programs and the classic icon is gone so I cannot turn it off. Also I cannot open Win 8 start page and the symbols do not appear on the left hand side.

The loss of the Classic Shell toolbar in Windows Explorer is still puzzling me.
I've been through all the Classic Shell options (I think!) and messed around with Windows Explorer, but after installing 8.1 the toolbar seems to have disappeared.
I used to have all the View buttons pinned to the bar and I'm really missing it. I know they can be put in the Quick Access Bar, but it's not as usable/fast as the Classic Shell version (the change as hovering I also find very annoying).
EDIT: Just realise I hadn't checked the version I was using. It's 4.0.4 and re-checking the developers site I've now realised that they're up to 4.0.6 ------ Could this be the issue?
I seem to remember that 4.0.6 was not yet stable, or have I dreamt that - I think I probably have
I find that I am using the Classic Shell less, but still want to have the format available. My problem is that every time I reboot my computer, I have to reset the Classic Shell settings.

There is no icon for the pdf file on the taskbar. So then I have to open it again from scratch. What am I doing wrong?

I went through all the checks in the tutorial on here, but at best, I can only get the desktop IE tile to pin to start. I would rather have the metro version tile on my start.

I have changed the title to more accurately reflect the problem. A bunch of the features that come with Windows 8 CP (the tablet friendly Settings page, Remote Desktop, the show desktop tile, The Windows Store, etc) all vanished shortly after I installed Windows 8. I tried reinstalling and the same thing happened again.
I have accidentally changed the Icon for the Picture Viewer on the Start Metro Screen.
I opened a Scan image and by default it used the Picture Program that was bundled on the Start Screen.
Somehow I made the Scan the default new icon, which looks awful. How can I get the Icon back to its original?
So, I have been trying to rid my Toshiba Satellite of a ton of bloatware they put on a new laptop running Windows 8. There are also some unnecessary Windows 8 tiles I can't get rid of from the big blue Metro start up screen.
Some, the ones that I guess are "apps" I can right click on, select "unpin" and they're gone, but others I cannot get rid of
Here's how my problem presents:
I select ALL APPS by right clicking on the blue Metro start screen.
Then I right click something like a game "It Girl" or "Polar Bowler" and I see PIN TO START, which I don't want to do, UNINSTALL, which I DO want to do, RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR, or OPEN FILE LOCATION. Uninstall just takes me to the control panel's "add/remove programs." Well there are no games there. I uninstalled them from there already. The other options just take me to the desktop
I'd love to be able to delete these tiles (some games, but also a number of Toshiba programs I'm never going to use.) But I've been unable to find the key.

Also the Windows store app is missing so I can't download the apps from the Windows 8 store. What should I do to bring em there? I also have a Windows 8 disc. So anyways, while playing movies (which are stored on a Maxtor 250gb HD), I am experiencing skips or chops every so often. Sometimes it will get so bad it won't even play the movie, it just pixellates and cuts out sound. But that's only happened one or two times while watching Oblivion in HD.
I have tried using different media players: the Video App skips, Windows Media Player skips, and VLC is just plain awful.
Computer specs:
Movies stored on Maxtor 250gb HD
HP 110 tower with an AMD E1 processor, model h5p35aa#aba
Came with Windows 8 pre-installed
Can i remove this Metro thing? I deleted every tab i didnt need on it and it left me with a blank screen? Why cant it just integrate with the desktop similar to the side widget thing but faster? That way I can still have my start menu but then have live tiles on the desktop.
Anyway how do i remove metro and put my start bar back??? As I can't access any of my newly installed programs without going to Computer>C:Pogram Data> then the program folder and finding the actual exe...
How can I have more than one web site (split screen) on my screen using ie10 from the metro screen.
I can do it from the desktop but I have not found a way to do it by launching ie10 from the windows 8 metro screen.
So I noticed the Start button's Windows icon is missing in my metro mode. I'm not exactly sure what it's called, but it's the multitask pane on the left side of the screen that appears when you hover over the top left corner and slide down. Rather than a Windows icon it now assumes the Accent color in PC settings.
I have some modding software installed, such as UxStyle, Aero Glass for Windows 8, and a custom theme, although this issue existed without these installed.

I've just bought a new Dell desktop computer which came with Windows 8.1 preinstalled. I like using the new Start menu (Metro) and want to avoid Desktop mode as much as possible now, to avoid confusion and flicking between the two modes repeatedly. My Windows boots into Start (Metro), as I want, and then I open an application, for example Firefox or Outlook. So far so good. However after closing any application, I'm returned to Desktop mode. I then have to click on the Windows logo in the bottom left to return to the new Start menu.
How to boot directly into Desktop mode, how to keep a desktop computer with a keyboard and mouse in Start (Metro) mode. Exiting an application should not return me to Desktop mode, it should return me to Start (Metro) mode.
Some items may not show up on the Metro "All Apps" list. (Such as a file, a folder, a web page that you saved in a folder, or some unusual kind of item, or any item in a folder that Metro doesn't search.) If you want to pin such an item to the Start Screen, here's a way that works. Open this folder:
C:Users(Your Username)AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms
In that folder, create a shortcut to the item you want. (If Windows insists on creating the shortcut only on your desktop, cut and paste it from there to the folder.)
Right-click the shortcut, select "Rename" and give it a name different from the item's actual name.
Then look on the "All Apps" screen for the name you gave to the shortcut.
I have 2 monitors and am wondering if there is some way to make it so that when I bring up the new metro start menu on my 2nd monitor that I can make it stick there?
As it is now, if I open the new menu on my 2nd monitor and then go back to what ever program that I have open on my first monitor (like chrome or I.E. etc) then the start menu will close from my 2nd monitor.
I'd like to make it where it stays open on my 2nd monitor. Is this somehow possible?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
I've been getting a "File Access Denied, You'll need to provide administrator permission to rename this file", popup window even with UAC turned off?
The files in question are shortcuts in the C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms.
It also happens in C:UsersUser-NameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms.
Basically what I'm doing is renaming the title of the tiles/programs displayed on the Metro Start screen. If there is a better way I'm all for that as having to click continue every time is getting old.
