Jul 5, 2013I have a problem which started recently. The problem is that everything closes unexpectedly. I am using the classic desktop environment to use this system and all the 'apps' I use a classing Windows programs.
Randomly all of the programs that are running on the machine close down without warning (And I mean ALL of them, even explorer.exe). I know that this has not been caused by a recent installation of a program as I have not installed anything recently. I also checked the computer with an Anti-Virus software as that could have been a cause but there wasn't anything.

Apr 16, 2014I recently turn off the login password on Windows 8.1, HP laptop. The next time she went to turn it on, all the normal tiles from the Start Screen were gone with the exception of five tiles: IE, File Explorer, Store, SkyDrive and Desktop.
The File Explorer icon opens a folder showing the various libraries and devices/drivers. When she clicks on the Documents folder it doesn't show any of her files. I did eventually find them by going to her name in the Users folder, but we cannot understand why simply taking away the requirement for a login password would change everything. All her browser favorites were also wiped out, and she had to reinstall Chrome.

Windows 8 - Can't Remove System Icon Off Desktop
May 3, 2014I sent my computer to the repair shop and they apparently reinstalled everything. For some reason they put the "Homegroup" system icon on my desktop and I don't want it there, I don't even use that. When I right click it, there is no delete option at all. How to delete this? Its annoying. I really get tired of Windows 8 trying to force me to use things that I don't wish to use.
I noticed when I click on the icon it has the option of "Leave the homegroup". I don't know if that would get rid of the icon or not but I am afraid to click leave the homegroup because they said my windows was corrupted and they fixed it. I am afraid to do anything drastic on my computer for fear it might corrupt it again. It seems like any little thing you do messes up this Windows 8.

Aug 12, 2014I have created a shutdown shortcut on my Win 8.1 tablet that works nicely.
My tablet has a physical button on the side that is used to put the tablet into instant sleep mode.
You press the button and the tablet immediately turns off (goes to sleep).
You press the button again and the tablet immediately turns on again (comes out of sleep).
I would like to create a shortcut on my desktop (NOT the Metro start screen) that will function the same way the
physical button does, that is, the tablet will immediately turn off (goes to sleep).
Someone posted something close, but not quite the same thing; ....powrprof.dll.SetSuspendState Sleep. When I create a shortcut with the above code the tablet actually *shuts down*. I know this because when I press the power button the tablet goes through the cold start up routine.
I would like the shortcut to do EXACTLY the same thing that happens when I press the power button on the tablet; go *immediately* into sleep. And pressing the power button after that should turn the tablet *immediately* back on.

Apr 3, 2012I finally found a "problem" with the Windows 8 desktop. Its a problem in Windows 7 too but I had never started a Homegroup. The darn icon won't move and you can't delete it. There is a Windows 7 fix for the problem at HomeGroup Desktop Icon - Add or Remove - Windows 7 Forums and it works with Windows 8.
If you want access to the Homegroup shortcut be sure to pin it to the start menu (I guess we call that the Start screen now) before you delete it.

This resulted in my external hard drive being partitioned into DBR_Master (F), which used 31.5 GB of the 1TB hard drive; and, DBR_Boot (G), using 23.6 MB. What is DBR_Master (F) all about? What is DBR_Boot (G) all about? In the event of an OS crash, will I be able to re-boot from the external hard drive? How often is it recommended to do a full system backup?
Since a system backup does not backup applications like MS-Office, is the purpose of periodic backups to capture future fixes & revisions to the OS? Since there is still a lot of unused space on the external hard drive, is it ok to save my daily data backups to the external hard drive? I tried to save data backups using File History to the DBR_Master (F) drive but it would not let me. I created a new folder in DBR_Master (F) but that didn't work. I receive a message that the destination was not connected. Where should I save daily data backups? Last question - does it matter whether I use File History or Dell Backup and Recovery to do daily data backups? Are there any advantages or disadvantages to using one over the other -- they seem to do the same thing?

Jan 16, 2013I have Classic Shell set up on two Window 8 machines, a desktop and an ASUS Q200e laptop. And it is thing of beauty on one machine but less so on the other. The desktop works just fine but on the ASUS I cannot skip the Metro screen. At boot, the Metro shows up for a long, long time before Classic Shell shows up. Yes, I have the 'skip Metro' item checked . On the desktop Classic Shell shows up immediately without showing any trace of Metro. I have compared the settings on both machines one by one and they are identical as far as I can see.
I made a Registry edit to produce a Classic Shell service log and here is the content of that log.

I believe the problem has something to do with one of the ASUS programs that gets loaded at startup. The OS is the one installed and shipped with the computer while the desktop is a clean install from a DVD.
