for Windows 7, you released some registry entries to add My Computer/User Folders/Control Panel onto the desktop for all users, which I've incorporated into an image to use with MDT. Anything similar for Windows 8? It's difficult to have to do this for individual users.

I got a nasty Malware program "WeCare" from the Imgburn Install (I think) and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to get rid of all the stuff it put in the registry. That seemed to work. I also ran CCleaner a couple of times. Again that seemed to work. However, now SOME of the shortcuts that I created for standalone programs - IBT, HWinfo, Prime95, SSDLife, and RegEdit show as a blank page with the upper right corner folded. I have also run into this issue on a W7 system but managed to force Windows to pick up an Icon from a different source. What file can I delete that would cause Windows to rebuild the Desktop Icons?
I found a .bat file that deletes the Icon Cache and rebuilds it. That solves my immediate issue...but...still curious on who or what caused specific Icons to go to default or whatever.
I am installing the Direct Download version of Windows 8. As it begins to setup it goes to a screen named "What needs your attention". It says "The following things need your attention before you can continue to the installation". It goes on to say "Change the folder or file name of C:users on drive C:"
It gives me an option called "Open" which takes me to this C: drive. However, I cannot change the name of C:users. Not even with administrative permission.
I've already tried the whole regedit thing where I changed ProgramFilesDir and ProgramFilesDir from C: to E:
I've only got a 60GB SSD drive where Windows 8 is installed but I've got a 2TB HHD where I want to install all new programs.
My SSD is now full and I can't download app updates or update to 8.1 due to lack of space.
Would it be easier to move windows onto my HDD? And if so, how do I do that?
I have a Dell inspirion 15 laptop running Windows 8.1. A while ago I decided to try Ubuntu out. I installed it alongside Windows 8.1 in dual boot configuration with its own separate hard drive partitions. This means that when I powered on my laptop a GRUB menu (Linux boot manager) would come up allowing me to choose between Windows and Ubuntu. However, Ubuntu was more pain than it was worth so I decided to uninstall it. I did this by deleting the hard drive partitions that Ubuntu was installed on using Windows Disk Management. Now when I power on my laptop the GRUB menu still comes up but there are no options to choose from, only a command line interface. I now have to type Code: exit
which exits GRUB and takes me to my BIOS Boot Manager which looks like this:

Why GRUB is still there even though I have deleted the Linux hard drive partitions? Also, why is Ubuntu still listed on the BIOS Boot options? And why is it listed twice?
Since I installed Windows 8 (on top of Vista x64 Ultimate) I have two Control Panel icons in the Taskbar.
If I right click and choose Delete to the one on the left, nothing happens.
If I right click and choose Delete to the one on the right, it deletes, but it reappears after a Reboot.
I only want one icon. How can I achieve this?

At first I assumed that those icons were not compatible with an HD screen or something, but then some of them fixed themselves. Others are still blurry.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIn our domain we have a policy to change the wallpaper every month. The change is done from server side. Now wallpaper of most of users is changed but for few it remains the old wallpaper.
For example I have windows 8 and mine is not updated. I also have tried gpupdate /force. No luck.
This issue is only with few systems running windows xp 7 and 8.
These systems only show the last months wallpaper not the one updated.
Also these windows are fully updated as of now.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a new HP envy t215 desktop with intel I7 Processor on a Megatrends MB with an EFI partition. The computer came with windows 7 pro but I want to temporally installWindows 8.
I want to remove the hard drive with Windows 7 Pro and insert a new 1TB Sata drive for a fresh install of windows 8. I have an almost new 1TB Sata WD hard drive formatted GPT/NTFS.I have completely wiped the hard drive. I will have to have the EFI partition on the windows hard drive.
The real question is will the windows 8 OEM software create the correct partitions when the system is installed.I know I need the EFI partition and the operating system partition at a minimum.
I have done a re-install of Windows 8 due to stabilty and speed issues.
It is a DUAL boot with Ubuntu 13.04, but this is not the problem.
The DESKTOP (I use Classic Shell) to get to the Desktop not the START screen. This worked well with my previous install.
However, I can't put ANYTHING on the blank Desktop - the folder Desktop has TONS of stuff in it.
Checked Permissions. Tried to Create a new folder or shortcut - it SAYS it's OK, and puts the New Folder in the Desktop folder, but it does NOT appear on my Desktop.
The Background works and I can get the Next Background by right clicking and selectin Next Desktop Background.
The START screen Icon of Desktop is also blank, except for my Background.
I love Metro, but I think booting into it is worse for me than if the Start menu were hanging open everytime you booted 7. I have to say this is an additional step that makes it feel a bit forced, a bit in the user's face. How to go straight to the dekstop?
View 9 Replies View Related Last week, I tried to dual-boot install Fedora Linux onto my Windows 8.1 PC (Asus CM1435 Desktop). I resized the Data Partition (not OS partition) by 100GB. I then restarted the PC, and Fedora seemed to work okay, however, I could not got Windows to start anymore. I then turned on Secure Boot and other Windows 8-optimized settings and tried to start up again; it did not work, Windows could not boot. I tried to search up some details on how to fix this problem, and I came across bcdboot and bootrec commands, and ran them (/fixmbr, /fixboot, /rebuildbcd), however, there was no luck, as /rebuildbcd gave me a 0 disks found error. I also followed the instructions here [URL] At this point, "Windows Bootloader" disappeared from the BIOS. Restarting resulted in a "Missing Operating System" error.
I tried using a Windows 8 installation disk, and tried Reset and Refresh, but neither worked. Reset gave me "Recovery Partition could not be found" (was still there, just got messed up in the resize or something), and Refresh gave me "Disk where windows is located is locked" (perhaps from fast reboot?) Then, I gave up all hope on the current installation. I booted into my Windows 8 recovery disk, formatted C:, and installed it from there. When it got to "Windows needs to restart to continue", restarting put me to "Missing operating system", and I could not continue the installation. I tried it again, (formatted and ran again), but no luck there. TLDR: Installing Linux broke Windows. Deleted Linux and could not reinstall Windows from repair disk. Formatted partition for Windows and used Windows 8 disk to reinstall, but errors.
Current Issue: Cannot install
Deleted all partitions except a factory recovery partition and a data partition. SYSTEM partitions and boot partitions were deleted.
Put Windows 8.1 disk in, installed into unallocated space. After installation got to the "Restart Needed" part, PC restarts and does NOT continue installation. I looked at the partitions the setup installer made, and it seems everything is correct (MSR's, EFI boot partition, etc). However, PC won't boot from Windows Bootloader. My PC is on a GPT disk, UEFI BIOS. Windows Bootloader used to be listed in the UEFI menu, but now it is not listed, and cannot be booted to it. When I disable UEFI and boot, I get "Missing Operating System". With UEFI, it just says I need to disable it to boot.

I have never dabbled in the installation or reinstallation of Windows 8 so far, but I am looking for information on how to re-install windows 8 onto a desktop computer that does not come with restore discs.
Now is it true that the CD-Key is stored on the BIOS? Or was that just a rumor that was floating around, I have never had true clarification on that.
If the answer is no, where would I find the CD-Key at that point?
Basically it is for a desktop computer that is no longer functioning and there were no restore discs created during original operation of the computer.
Original ACER desktop with Windows 8 and it was upgraded through the Windows Store to Windows 8.1 The upgrade came up with errors "the Secure Boot watermark".
I tried various things suggested to fix the error but was unable to.
I backed up the computer data.
I formatted the drive and installed Windows 8.1 from a thumb drive and it installed correctly without errors.
I was unable to install a Product Key Licence as the computer had it imbedded in the bios and I have no label with the key on the machine.
I should not have to purchase another licence. How do I find the original licence key?
Is it possible to repair or reinstall windows 8 pro while keeping the desktop app using the windows 8 installation disk and if so any link to a site that explain how to do it.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have received a new laptop from HP to replace my original purchase which turned out to have a defective keyboard. I am in the process of clearing my personal info/history from the defective computer before returning it to HP.
I have deleted all my files and have uninstalled all the programs that I installed. I also deleted the items shown in the "Desktop" directory (which were the shortcuts I created). That may have been a mistake because now I am attempting to clear the shortcut icons from the desktop, with no success! Since the files to which the shortcuts pointed have been deleted, I get a message telling me the file is no longer located in the "Desktop" directory (no kidding, I deleted it!). I can't delete them or even rename them or delete their names. I realize now that I should have deleted the shortcut icons before clearing the "Desktop" directory.
These shortcuts don't link to anything, but because their names give an indication of my personal interests, I would prefer to have them removed. I could reformat the drive, but I assume HP would like to get the machine back complete with all files that they originally supplied with it. I really don't want to do a restore and start over clearing my info.

I don't like seeing my desktop icons, so I did right click on desktop -> View -> Show desktop icons so that they disappear. They're gone, but every time I restart my laptop, they appear again.
I'd like to solve the problem correctly without just deleting all of my desktop icons.
I am trying to display my desktop icons as a list. Note: I am using the "Windows 8" app (the add-on start button).
Windows 8 does not offer this setting, but there is an app: [url].....

I recently upgraded from XP to Windows 8 and subsequently to 8.1 I'm having persistent problem with desktop icons disappearing. This happens when our PC has been on for around 10 minutes, regardless of whether the PC is active or not.
The second problem is the icons on the taskbar will not work correctly - only a very small window opens above each icon and it will NOT maximise. The only way to solve this I've found is to restart the PC but it's becoming more and more frequent ..
For some reason when I started up my laptop recently, all of the icons on both the taskbar and the desktop have turned invisible/disappear completely and I am unaware has to how to fix it. I have put a picture in the attachments that shows what the "icons" look like when they are highlighted and non-highlighted.

The only way I've found to add app icons to the desktop is to go to the All Apps screen, right click, go to file location, then add a shortcut to the desktop from there. Is there an easier way?

After still no joy of windows updating properly (another unsolved thread)........ now suddenly my desktop icons will not hide! If I right click to go to view menu..... black screen, nothing can be done - restart and impossible to resume without restart AGAIN!
This is the second time of windows 8 being put on my machine and there is so much not happening that should it makes a mockery of buying the software!
Last september i formatted my hdd and installed windows 8 ultimate, then updated to 8.1 ultimate, i don't exactly remember when but after some time it was installed desktop icons began to move by themselves. Last month i got an SSD and i decided to just reinstall windows 8.1 PRO from scratch. i did. After 1 or 2 days icons started moving by themselves again. i'm pretty sure there is a recurring way they do it, there must be an even that because of a bug triggers the movements, i haven't been able to determine it tough.
There isn't much more to say other than:
-"AutoArrange Icons" is disabled.
-I tried to download some .ini fixes for similar problem but they fails.
-I tried programs to manually restore icons position manually with a previous save. useless.
-i have no viruses and no strange programs installed.
-At the time i started having the problem i only had: StartIsBack 1.5.2, chrome and Visual Studio.
I want my desktop icons to be arranged to a pattern I like. But whenever I do this Windows 8 will destroy my pattern randomly back to default. Is there a way to stop this? I have Auto arrange icons unchecked BTW.
I have Start8 and Windows 7 widget support installed if this makes a difference. (I don't want to remove or diable them)
