Is there any way to reinstall windows to C: without breaking my programs on D: ? I mean, a lot of the stuff will still work without any special tricks, but the things with hundreds of hard to find registry entries concern me.
Could I possibly reinstall to C: then run a repair installation for all the programs that reside on D:?

Now is it true that the CD-Key is stored on the BIOS? Or was that just a rumor that was floating around, I have never had true clarification on that.
If the answer is no, where would I find the CD-Key at that point?
Basically it is for a desktop computer that is no longer functioning and there were no restore discs created during original operation of the computer.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently went through a ton of issues with my lenovo y510p laptop and since it didn't come with a recovery disc, I was forced to reinstall windows 8 through a recovery disc on a usb stick. However, the only one I was able to get was an "evaluation version" of windows, so I've lost my original version of windows 8 after the reinstall. Is there any way to find my old key so that I can upgrade? I've tried a key finder, but it only finds the evaluation key.
Would I have to contact Lenovo to see if they can give me my product key or is there an easier way?
I have a laptop that has win 8 but not the Pro version.And it apparently does not have Bitlocker on it.
I have the win 8 Pro upgrade software but i think its the full version which i bought for another pc.And the upgrading instructions on the outside of the box talks about upgrading from vista or xp only.I am running win 8.
The only reason I am wanting to upgrade to win 8 Pro is to have Bitlocker.
Is it not possible to install the win 8 Pro OS?
Or is there another way of obtaining Bitlocker?

Will it be possible to boot Windows 8 from a GPT partition using BIOS (not UEFI)? I'll be using the 64bit version.

Last night I was playing League of Legends when I got a BSoD. I didn't think much of it, and just waited for my computer to restart. However, as it restarted, I saw that it was auto repairing and then diagnosing. After that it said auto repair failed, giving me the directory c:windowssystem32logfilessrtsrttrail.txt. I tried system refresh, which shoot me back system refresh failed straight away. The same happens with system restart, but it takes much longer for it to say the restart failed. I have no system restore points to choose from and I have no recovery disks as Windows 8 came preinstalled on the computer. I've troubledshooted for hours and come to opening SrtTrail.txt with the command prompt. It says:
Root cause found: The operating system version is incompatible with Startup Repair.

Me and my girlfriend both have recently bought new laptops that came with Windows 8 installed (HP Pavilion) but wiped the drive and installed Ubuntu straight away without booting Windows 8.
Now that 8.1 is out we want to give it a chance. I see I can download 8.1 preview from Microsoft but it comes with a product key, so I'm guessing that it will expire once 8.1 is officially released, but both laptops had Windows 8 preinstalled so they should have an embedded product key, correct?
Is is possible to install 8.1 preview and get it to use the embedded product keys, or do I have to buy a HP recovery disc and use that to install Windows 8 on both laptops, then update both to 8.1 through the store?
Also, if I was to buy a Windows 8 DVD in store (only about 20 more than a HP recovery disc), could I use that to install Windows 8 on both laptops (using the embedded product keys), and then use the product key that came with it to upgrade a family member to Windows 8?
Let's say your computer comes with Windows 8 (not 8 Pro) preinstalled, using a SLIC and not a product key. Yu decide you hate the OEM crapware and want to do a clean reinstall. Bt you don't have reinstallation media, or the media includes the crapware.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI had my system set up for Dual boot (on separate hard drives) for both Win 8.1 and Win 7. Win 8.1 developed a problem and unfortunately the only back up I had (my fault) was for Win 8 before I installed Win 7 and the dual boot.
I reinstalled from the backup and then updated Win 8 to 8.1. Both the Win 8.1 64 bit and the Win 7 64 bit work OK but the dual boot is now missing in Win 8.1.
Is there any way of repairing/creating the dual boot, either in Win 7 or Win 8, without using BCD Edit?
I have removed a Linux Distro from my dual boot, it was running GRUB2 as the bootloader and now I need to repair windows to get the bootloader fixed and overwrite GRUB with the normal loader.
However for whatever reason, it is notoriously difficult to do this without a disc or having made a backup drive within windows before things went tits up.
Is there a simple way to install a recovery disc onto a USB, boot from USB and then repair?
My daughter brought her Gateway NE71B laptop to me because it was running like a snail. She had NO anti-virus software so I plugged in an external HDD and created what I thought was a Recovery Partition. When I had the computer boot to the external drive I tried the auto repair twice and failed both times.
When I tried to recover from the external drive I got an error message that said I/O error that could be caused by the fact that a portable device needed to be plugged in to continue.
Didn't know what to do so I unplugged the drive and tried again. No bootable devices found. Plugged the external drive back in and got the same I/O error. So I thought I'd just order the recovery media from Gateway. The day it arrived, I put the System Recovery disk in, It booted to the recovery screen with 3 options; Full recovery (original factory setup), Full recovery after removing data and Exit. I've tried both the first 2 options and up pops a window that says; Recovery must be done in Legacy Mode.
So I changed the bios from UEFI to legacy, restarted the computer with the Sys. Disk still in DVD tray, It start to load the recovery screen and up pops a window that says; Recovery Can Only Be Done In UEFI Mode.
If I were to guess, I would say I have an MBR virus and it's playing tricks with me. I've ordered a new identical hard drive to install when it arrives and hope to be able to get the recovery media to get back to normal.
I got windows 8 online and I went to try and use the re install feature but its prompting me with this "Some files are missing. Your Windows installation or recovery media will provide these files" But since i got it online I don't have the CD but I do have the product key

View 9 Replies View RelatedI would like to reinstall Win 8 on my ASRock UEFI motherboard in the UEFI mode. I have Win 7 OEM and the downloaded Win 8 Pro upgrade. I have the Win 8 Pro upgrade burned to an ISO disc. I also have the hard drive backed up to Acronis 2013 and have an Acronis WinPE rescue disc to boot with to restore.
Several questions.
(1) If I convert to UEFI and format the drive to GPT, will Acronis restore to the GPT (from MBR)?
(2) If Acronis won't restore, will converting to UEFI/GPT affect installing or activating the Win 7 OEM and/or the Win 8 Pro upgrade (I assume I'll have to install Win 7 and then upgrade to Win 8).
(3) Will a UEFI system read other hard drives that are MBR formatted?
I have an Acer aspire e1-570 where the c: drive partition is deleted. (It is a friends pc and he treid to put win 7 on it) All the other partitions are still there. He did not make any recovery dvd or usb stick.
I trayed to get i restored to factory settings, but can not.
It says it is missing a partition.
