Server 2003 - How To Register DNS With Existing Domain Controller

Mar 7, 2014

I am running into a problem with newly upgraded windows 8 computers not being able to register DNS with our existing domain controller that is currently on server 2003.

I am getting the following error: The system failed to register host (A or AAAA) resource records (RRs) for network adapter with settings:

Adapter Name : {0D2F7524-B997-4850-BE6E-50B502FE46A8}
Host Name : ########
Primary Domain Suffix : #####.#######.com
DNS server list :
172.29.1.10, 172.29.1.12
Sent update to server : <?>
IP Address(es) :
172.29.5.145

The reason the system could not register these RRs was because of a security related problem. The cause of this could be (a) your computer does not have permissions to register and update the specific DNS domain name set for this adapter, or (b) there might have been a problem negotiating valid credentials with the DNS server during the processing of the update request.

You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its settings by typing 'ipconfig /registerdns' at the command prompt. If problems still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator. See event details for specific error code information.

I blanked out the computer name and domain name.

Network / Sharing :: System Cannot Contact Domain Controller

Feb 5, 2013

I have two computers:

LOFT
mapped network drives M, N, O

BEDROOM
mapped network drives P, Q, R

If I am on the LOFT computer i can see all mapped network drives, M,N,O,P,Q,R

if I am on the BEDROOM computer I can see mapped network drives P,Q,R but not M,N,O. I click on M,N,O and it comes up with a windows asking for login and password and states the following, "the system cannot contact a domain controller to service the authentication request, after I type in the info I can then see the drives.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 / Microsoft 2003 Server And Folder Redirection

May 2, 2014

Sys: Windows 8.1 Pro clients attached to MS 2003 server domain. (yes I know its best to have a higher win server version with 8.1, but i do not have that currently)

Ok, so the problem is that roaming profiles and folder redirection work but on only SOME of the windows 8.1 clients!!!!

How can these both work fine on only SOME of my essentially identical workstations?

I realize that I need different Profile types for the different OS's. I have applied the V4 registry edit and created a V4 default profile in my sysvol directory on the DC so that the workstations get a proper V4 starting profile.

All PC's are in same OU container.

My GPO's for roaming profiles and folder redirection have not changed from my XP workstations, Windows server 2003 domain controller.

So I create a new user, and log into one of the Windows 8.1 client machines on my local lan. Wow, profile works, V4 created in the profile share, redirection works perfectly. So I log out. I then remote to an identical PC across my wan. Log in as same user and it works fine, get the redirected desktop, and profile. But now the fun begins. I log out to complete the profile "swap" back to the server. I try to log back in and the disaster starts. (Yes, I have triple checked my permissions on all shares etc.)

I get the "DESKTOP cannot be loaded error". Logs show REDIRECTION SUCCESSFUL for my desktop!!! What the?

I have received the "redirection gpo not applied till next login" log, but it is intermittent. Its like the OS does does not know it nose from its butt! How can my desktop be redirected successfully and I get a message that my DESKTOP IS NOT AVAILABLE?

So I go back to my local lan machine and try logging in as this same user, IT WORKS FINE OVER AND OVER AGAIN!

How I can get my roaming profiles and folder redirection to work normally with my Windows 8.1 clients on my MS 2003 domain server?

Network / Sharing :: Can't Map Network Drives On Server 2003 Machine In Win 8.1

Dec 29, 2013

I'm trying to map a Server 2003 network drive in Windows 8.1

For some reason, in the 'Map Network Drive' window, the server doesn't show under 'Network' when I click the 'browse' button. Additionally the server doesn't show under 'Network' in file manager but I can ping it just fine.

Is there perhaps some kind of incompatibility between Win 8.1 and Server 2003 that could be causing this ...

Setup Installation :: Unable To Register Evaluation Copy (Pro Preview) Of 8.1

Jan 3, 2014

I upgraded my computer's OS from W7 to Windows 8 some months ago. Not long after, I upgraded to the preview of the Windows 8.1 Pro. My Windows-license is legit, bought and valid. However, when I returned from my christmas holiday, I noticed the message in picture #2. Fair enough, I thought and proceeded forth.

Clicking 'Get Windows' got me to the screen pictured at #3. Oddly enough, I am unable to click any of the buttons, including Download, Home, Your apps and Your account. I can access the links further down on the page (which aren't included in this screencap) but for some reason I can't press anything else.

When I've tried to access the Windows 8 Store before this problem arised, even before I installed Windows 8.1, I have literally never been able to access the Windows 8 Store (See picture #1).

How do I go from here? I would like to register the Windows 8.1 ...

Network / Sharing :: W2K3 Server Can Access Windows 8 Computer Can't See W2K Server

Jan 15, 2013

Why does Windows Networking always seem to hose things up ( Linux works EVERY time)

I have two computers on the SAME test private LAN one Whitehorse (W2003 server) and the other Blackdog (Windows 8 Enterprise) both enabled "Shareable and Visible".

View from W2003 -- can see and access disks C,D, and F on Windows 8 Computer

View from Windows 8 - Networking shows the computer Whitehorse (W2003 server) but can't access any disks etc (or even its printer). PING even fails but Windows 8 obviously knows it's on the Network because its found it. The stupid Windows diagnostics when you click Diagnose doesn't work at all --in fact I've NEVER found the network diagnostic panel of the slightest bit of support ever.

I've switched off firewalls etc while testing so there's no security rubbish to take care of while I'm trying to get this to work. LAN is purely LOCAL -- no computer is on "the other side" of a router.

Both machines can access independently the Internet through a Local router and connections are via LAN cable so nothing should be simpler. !! But can I get this to work !!.

I had a similar problem with W7 but it seemed to "Disappear" without me actually doing anything -- the proverbial "Ghost in the Machine" I expect.

(Windows Networking Grrrhhhhhh! -- I'm not particularly technical with this stuff but any time I've used Networking with Linux it works STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX and there's no problem sharing from or to windows. !!)

Note -- Other W7 / Linux / XP computers connected to this SAME LAN (currently switched off) have NO problem accessing the server -- It's just this Windows 8 Machine (Windows 8 x-64 Enterprise version).

Apps / Software :: Can't Register Legacy Software In Fresh Windows 8.1

Nov 16, 2013

I use a really really old music production mastering software called t-racks 24 which I'm dependant on and I don't want to buy a new version because of this. I really like the old version and see no reason to stop using it. Considering it being so old I wouldn't expect any support from the company.

Installing and registering it in windows 8 is no problem, and it still works after upgrading to windows 8.1. But on my other desktop pc I did a fresh installation of windows 8 and did the upgrade to 8.1 first thing before installing any other apps. And now I'm screwed. I can't register because my digital ID is completely wrong. It is supposed to have random letters and numbers but all I get is AAAAAAAA-AAAA-AAAA-AAAA-AAAAAAAA. I found a really old cached question from a FAQ about the same problem but for Windows Vista and the answer was to run it in compatibility mode. I've tried all compatibility modes, both with and without admin rights, but it doesn't work.

I think it is really strange that it works in windows 8 and 8.1 IF it is installed prior to upgrading to 8.1. I did a crosscheck by installing windows 8 on an empty partition, installed T-racks, and then upgraded to 8.1 and it works. I can of course always keep in mind to perform it like this when I do a fresh re-install of windows, but I just got windows 8.1 set up on an SSD and have installed all applications I use and it would be nice to not have to re-install everything again just because of one single application. And also if I plan to get a device that ships with windows 8.1 (like the surface pro 2) I need to have another solution.

Outlook (Word Editor) 2003 Will Not Autofill Names

Nov 26, 2013

I installed 2003 outlook and word (outlook editor) on my brand new Win 8.1 netbook and when typing the "TO" and "CC" lines the names show up but when pressing enter they will not be accepted. I have to enter the first couple of letters of the names and then press the "check names" icon and go through the list even though the one I wanted was the one that showed up on the auto fill line singularly.

I know the auto fill does not go to the outlook contact book but rather remembers the names as they are "sent".

I have used outlook for years on both Win XP and Win 7 (various 32+64, Pro, Ultimate) and now with Win 8 it will NOT work the same way. My brother has the identical netbook and is running Outlook 2007 and it performs the same way - will not allow enter to complete the autofill. Whatsup over there at MS?

Browsers/Mail :: Outlook 2003 Won't Put Addresses Automatically?

Jan 2, 2014

I'm setting up my backup system as my main system is down for warranty repair on the motherboard.

I had Outlook 2003 setup on the main system in both Win 7 64 bit and Win 8.1 64 bit. I know Office 2003 is not supposed to be compatible with Win 8, but it works OK.

On the main system in Outlook 2003 when composing a new message, if I typed the first letter of an e-mail address in the "To" (or others) a drop down menu of e-mail addresses will appear and I could highlight the one I wanted and press enter and it would be entered on the address line. With the new install on this backup Win 8.1 system, when I highlight an e-mail address and press enter, all it does is enter the first letter and add a second line to the address line - see attached screen shot. I can't find where to enable this option (if it is an option).

Setup Installation :: Transfer Windows 8.1 To Different Controller / Same PC

Apr 23, 2014

My Windows 8.1 installation started developing some problems including malware. So I decided to reinstall Windows, but in order to make it without a hurry, I used a separate disk. This way I could use the old installation for everyday work until the new installation was ready for the switchover. But, I didn't have a spare SATA hard disk to start with, so I decided to use an old IDE hard disk.

My motherboard Asus P8H61 doesn't have an onboard IDE controller, so I used a Logilink IDE/SATA PCI-E card (JMicron JMB36X chipset) to connect the disk. I then managed to transfer some data to other places and freed a spare 500GB SATA disk so I could clone the installation since the old IDE disk was only 120GB. I used Acronis True Image 2014 and did an "As is" clone to make sure that the transfer would be successful and bootable. I would later extend the partition to take all the available space. So far so good.

The problem is that the disk works only connected on the Logilink card (JMicron JMB36X controller) and not when connected onboard (Intel controller). I attempted to repair Windows startup using the DVD-ROM but didn't manage to start Windows successfully, unless I connect the disk on the card. I wouldn't mind too much about it, but the card sometimes blocks when there are too many programs open increasing disk access freezing the system and I have to reset the computer. Not really convenient.

So what can I do to make the installation usable on the onboard Intel controller? Is there any workaround? Of course I would like to avoid reinstalling everything and waste a week's effort!

Realtek PCIe GBE Network Controller Cannot Start Code 10

Sep 15, 2014

first off this is a new fresh install of windows 8 i had to download and install 8.1 via updates. This computer is fully updated.

It is an older computer but I only use it for my TV to store Movie/Videos
ASUS M3A78-EM
AMD Phenom 8450 @ 2.1ghz
2gb gskill ram
blueray drive
3tb seagate
2tb wd
kingston 120gb SSD

after a fresh install everything worked fine until i tried to connect to my local network the onboard NIC has an error (code 10) it is a Realtek PCIe GBE Family NIC. after finding this i uninstalled and went to Realteks website and got the newest windows 8 64bit drivers. ran the install and it updated the drivers... but the device still cannot start so i uninstalled again and picked the drivers manually and that didn't change the issue either.

So i checked the back of the computer and noticed that non of the activity lights were lighting up on the NIC so i pulled the ram and battery AND power cord and let it sit. (ive delt with a similar issue before where a NIC would stay asleep and not wake up) after a wait i turned it back on and noticed that i had an orange light glowing again on the NIC.

After setting up the bios i booted back into windows only to see that as SOON as the driver were automatically installed the lights in the back go out and of course..... the device cannot start error.....

At this point I cant think of anything else to do. I do have a wireless card in the pcie slot that works fine. could that cause the onboard not to work? or... am i Just SOL and this is just a Windows 8 issue? should i just go and buy a PCIe network card?

Hardware Drivers :: VIA USB 3.0 Controller Stopped Working Now Hidden Device

Sep 15, 2014

This evening I went to use by portable USB drive and noticed it wouldn't work. I tried another port and it still didn't work. I then tried another device on the same ports and it also did not work.

I opened up device manager and saw that my VIA USB xHCI controller was no longer listed under USB controllers. I turned on Show Hidden Devices and it then appeared as a hidden device. I attempted to re-install the drivers for it but the installer wouldn't run because it said it didn't detect the hardware on the system.

I last used the ports 2 nights ago and didn't have any problem then. I thought the problem may have been caused by the Windows updates I installed today so I uninstalled them all, but the USB controller still doesn't work.

Hardware Drivers :: Xbox 360 Controller To Navigate Windows 8 Metro

Jul 1, 2013

To me, this is a huge oversight on Microsoft's part. Imagine being able to boot up your PC, go to Metro, then fire up Steam big picture mode and play your games without ever needing to touch your mouse and keyboard (except, of course, if you are playing an FPS or RTS :3 )

I don't get why this is not supported. It is just such a massive oversight. When I hit the Xbox logo on my controller I would want my PC to switch to Metro mode and allow the navigation of my PC using the thumbsticks, D-pad and face buttons.

Microsoft are trying to be very universal about their devices. Xbox, Zune, Windows, they are trying to get everything into one interface and one brand, so why is the Xbox Controller not supported with Windows for navigational purposes?

Accounts :: Disconnected From Domain Now Cannot Login

Aug 20, 2014

We were sent some Surface Pro 2 Tablets at work. They were already setup with the programs we needed, however they were not behaving correctly. Kept getting network errors for the domain, as everything else on the network was working but that.

Apparently at least unjoins our domain, restarts, and now I cannot login for anything in this world. I cannot get any other user accounts to show up but the last person who logged in, who was an administrator on tablet under our domain, and the password simply does not work. I have tried restarting in safe mode with and without network and that doesn't work because it won't recognize the password for the user. So I thought system restore would work but apparently I need to login to the account to do that as well.

Also tried rebooting to the command prompt. I apparently need to login for that as well. I have tried rebooting into a password recovery/reset disc but I cannot get it to boot to the cd, or at least if it is, it's certainly not reading the disc (which I knows works for XP & 7). I cannot do a reset password usb because alas, I need to be able to login to be able to create one of those. I've looked at several online things but most of them start with "you need to be logged in".
