Power Consumption With Windows 8 And 8.1?

Jan 5, 2014

I realized something interesting what happen using Windows 8 and 8.1, compare to Windows 7: a quite huge difference in power consumption!

For some special reason I was need ti install Windows 7 on my computer at home. I done that on an new HDD with 320GB, running solo for the installation by removing the power cables form the other HDD's, a total of 8 SATA3 HDD's. That was done 2 days ago and I firstly I installed only those Apps I need to use on Windows 7, no any gimmiks, whistles or bells! On Windows 8 I use Gadgets and the CPU Gadget show at middle 20%-25% while doing normal work.

I also have 3 different power circuit's at my home office, to each an Ampere Meter connected. On the circuit with my computer, which is connected to an 1.2KW UPS is also the Modem/Router 4 Port, LAN Switch 8 Port and and Debian Linux Server running. 2. Power Circuit has an Survailance Server and an Mail Server running and 3. circuit is for the normal other electric use like lights, power plugs etc.

Now on my computer's circuit the Amp Meter is 0-10A and with Windows 8 and 8.1 and the other devices, as pointed above, the consumption is about 2.6A-2.7A, depend on the work done on the computer. There is only 1 printer connected via the same power circuit, an Brother QL570 Thermal Label printer which is 99.8% of the time off line!

Now the interesting: running Windows 7 on the exact same computer with all HDD's running, as Windows 8, the power consumption is between 2.2A and max 2.4A! So, I installed more apps, mainly now the same a s running in 8/8.1 and also the gadgets. The CPU usage is mainly between 2-6% and may goes up to 15% by heavier work but reach 20%!

Both, the CPU usage and the power consumption is a quite huge difference using the exact same hardware, only difference is the OS Windows 8/8.1 vs Windows 7! In this, Windows 7 wins clearly!

Windows 8 Power Options Gone?

Apr 25, 2013

I just noticed that when I go to the Power Options that the options are missing. It says the Power Plan is missing or unavailable or something such. One answer said to do a refresh or reset of Windows 8. Isn't that a bit drastic? Is there no way to do it by tweaks. I did that refresh once and lost more than I thought I was supposed to.

Windows 8 - Blinking Power Light

Oct 6, 2013

I've had Windows 8 sitting around since February, and got around to installing it yesterday. So far all is well, except for when I shut my computer off the power LED will keep flashing. At first I thought my computer was just in sleep mode, but after hitting a couple keys that was not the case. Is there a setting some where that would cause this. I know it's a minor issue but damn that LED is bright.

My systems specs
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300

EVGA 123-YW-E175-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3750640AS 750GB

CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

Yeah this machine is over five years old, working on getting a new one together soon.

Windows 8.1 Will Not Completely Power Off Randomly?

Nov 22, 2013

My computer won't power off completely, SOMETIMES, i'm going nuts here.

Here are my system specs:
ASUS Forumla IV latest BIOS
ASUS GTX 690
2x4 2333 GB RAM
ANTEC 1200W PSU
1 SSD & 4 HDD
Creative ZXR SB

using latest drivers for all the above

sometimes the PC power off completely when i shutdown, sometimes not, the screen would go black but the power won't get turned off, the fans are still spinning and no BSOD...I have to either hard reset or hold the power button to turn it off.

I tried resetting CMOS, turning on and off the Fast boot feature in power options

With or without overclocking

Is there anyway to diagnose or investigate what is causing the PC not to power off completely?

Maintenance :: No Power Option In Windows 8

Jan 23, 2013

I recently upgraded to Windows 8 (64-bit) and noticed I don't have power options available. I own an HP Pavilion DV7, usually when I leave the laptop to do something over night, I go into "Choose what closing the lid does" and I get the error saying my power plan info is not available. Whenever I try to create a powerplan it tells me the same thing, but when I hit next, it tells me it can't find the file specified. I have no power options at the moment. I tried resetting to defaults using cmd, rebooted, and the only power option I had (Razer Gamebooster) was gone, and had nothing after.

Windows 8 Kernel Power Error

Jan 20, 2013

I installed clean Windows 8. I checked the event viewer to see if everything is OK. But it has 4 critical error and they were all Kernel Power Error. I noticed these Kernel Power Errors are caused by when I restart my PC. Example is when I installed Photoshop, I restarted and I checked the Event Viewer Log. There was an event Kernel error created.

but here is where it gets complicated. When I boot to desktop after restarting my PC, it doesn't say my computer suffered from a serious error. I have to check it manually by going to the Event Viewer Logs. If I don't check the Event Viewer Log, I won't know.

There has also been times where my PC won't boot to Windows 8. I goes past BIOS and Windows boot screen, but it hangs there. It simply crashes.

I don't overclock my PC. My PC temps are always low old IDLE and always within the max temp under full load.I have installed and updated ALL drivers and BIOS. I thought this might be driver issue but I realized this happened when I installed it clean and booted up for the first time.

This does not happen in Windows 7. Only in Windows 8.

I ran Prime95 for 12 hours -- no error
I ran Intel Burn Test for 9 hours -- no error
I ran Memtest for 12 hours -- no error

My PC specs:

CPU: AMD FX 8350 4GHZ
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6870
RAM: 8GB Corsair Dual Channel
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0
PSU: XFX 450W
Samsung 830 128GB SSD

Windows 8.1 HTPC - Unexpected Power On

Feb 8, 2014

I'm troubleshooting a Windows 8.1 HTPC (ASrock Vision 3D 252B) that sometimes starts up on his own.

Unexpected power on seem to be periodical, but checking scheduler, registry and BIOS, there's no scheduled power on.

It's connected to a SmartTV via HDMI, but unexpected power on happen also when SmartTV is off, so I think this is not a cause.

This computer is often powered on via WoL but, if there's no stange packets coming, i think this is not a cause, too.

I've just been disabling RTC Wake Up in BIOS, I have no idea what this feature is.

Windows 8 Screensaver And Power Options Not Working?

Aug 29, 2012

I installed windows 8 on a desktop computer that had windows 7 before. Screensaver was working perfectly on windows 7. Since windows 8, the screensaver won't start, the display won't turn off after 15 minutes like I set it up in power options. Just to test, I removed all USB devices that could prevent the screensaver to start. I closed all the programs running in the taskbar, including those hidden. The screensaver won't start even if I set it to one minute.

Pressing the preview screensaver button works. But letting it go by itself doesn't.

Is there a way to copy the power settings and apply them to any new laptop we build out?

Example:

Laptop 1: Power settings are set to never go to sleep, not require passwords on wake up, brightness set to max, disable adaptive brightness.

I am hoping to be able to run a batch file or something to accomplish this on every machine I build out.

Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit - Power Button Sleep Only Works Once

Mar 20, 2013

I'm running Windows 8 Pro 64 bit on a Dell Precision 490 desktop. I upgraded from XP so it was basically a clean install.

I have my power button configured to put the system to sleep and it will do that ONCE after I turn it on. After that, pushing the power button does nothing until the next reboot or power cycle. Going to Charms -> Settings -> Power -> Sleep always works.

This obviously isn't a critical problem, but it's really annoying because I'm in the habit of hitting the power button and usually it just doesn't work.

Things I've tried:
- searching Google - can't find the needle in the haystack
- searching this forum - nothing that matches
- checking the Event Log - nothing interesting or suspicious
- apply all Microsoft updates - no change
- disable my Comodo Internet Security - no change
- change power options and then change them back - no change
- checked if I could stop and restart the power service - nope

Installed Windows 8.1 - Power Plan Information Is Not Available

Oct 19, 2013

Installed 8.1 about a week ago and I'm fairly happy with it so far (after removing charms, going straight to desktop etc) however I have a few minor problems.

Firstly my windows keyboard shortcut key is not working (Logitech G15)

Secondly in power options there are no plans that I can change, if for example I try to create a power plan I get the message "Your power plan information is not available". Tried sfc etc but no problems are detected.

Finally it just seems slower in some respects vs win 7 x64 ultimate, especially booting up. SSDs are all trimmed and aligned and all drivers are installed.

Windows Shuts Down When Closing Laptop Despite Power Plan

Feb 4, 2014

I recently reinstalled Windows 8 completely because I bought an SSD for in my laptop. I exported my power plans I used before the reset (when Windows was still on the HDD) and imported them again after the reset. In every power plan, Windows should go to sleep mode when closing the laptop lid, but that's not what's happening. Instead, Windows shuts down entirely, but the power light on my laptop indicates it's in sleep mode (flashing slowly). I also tried the built-in power plans (after just adjusting the appropriate setting), but the same happens. When i change the setting to do nothing (instead of going to sleep mode), it acts like it should: it does nothing.

Debugging :: Driver Power State Failure On Windows 8.1

Mar 6, 2014

I am experiencing a severe problem with my laptop, a pretty new ASUS S550CB. It started two weeks ago and I really cannot figure out what is the cause. The problem is that the laptop is no longer unable to wake up from sleep or hybernation modes. If it goes to sleep, after it wakes up it is able to show the login screen (sometimes) but when you're typing the password it freezes and after a while, a blue screen saying that the computer stopped working due to a Driver Power State Failure is shown. A minidump is saved and the computer is restarted. The whole operation takes a looong time. I also notice that boot times are much longer even when waking up from power off state.

From an initial investigation, the problem seemed to sit in iaStorA.sys (Intel Rapid Start Technology driver) not handing power modes correctly. So I tried to upgrade it to the latest version, and no luck. I tried to uninstall it, and uninstall also the ExpressCache software that the laptop came with, but no luck.

I then installed again first IRST latest driver, no luck. I then added ExpressCache on top of it (as stated in ExpressCache install instructions), no luck.

I do not have a recovery point saved before the problem started to happen (aroud 18 feb). I have tried to uninstall all windows updates received from 15 feb onwards but guess what? No luck as well.

The laptop all of a sudden became almost unusable, sleep and hybernation no longer work at all, and the SDD and IRST were a main driver in my choice of buying ASUS S550CB.

I attach to this post the outcome of SF Diagnostic Tool run today.

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 Won't Retain Changes To Power Option Settings

Sep 15, 2014

I've been trying to change my power options. I go into Power Saver, "change plan settings," and try to change the "On battery" setting from "Put the computer to sleep: 3 minutes" to "Put the computer to sleep: Never." (I want to make this change because I have a Dell XPS, and it can have difficulties waking up from sleep.)

I've made this change a number of times, but after a while my computer simply reverts back to the 3 minute setting on its own. So, I leave the machine alone for a few minutes, I come back, and it's asleep...even though I thought I had changed the setting to 30 minutes. And in fact, I *had* changed the setting to 30 minutes; the computer is somehow reverting to 3 minutes on its own.

Maintenance :: Power Saver Settings Option Windows 8?

Aug 30, 2013

Use of the Power Saver Setting in Windows 8 lowers my pc temperature (at idle) by at least 6 degrees. Using this setting, my pc now idles at 27 degrees C. When I use High Performance, my idle temp is usually at least 33 degrees, or more. For those who have problems with their pc's running warm, this is just one of the things I've found which works for temperature lowering. My biggest impact on lowering temp was air cleaning the pc case interior - getting all the fuzzy balls out...... At one point, my idle temp was in the 50 to 60 degree range and I figured my disk was failing. After checking for a possible problem, I found much of the problem was my own maintenance procedure failure. So, if your pc seems to be running rather high, look around for the simple solutions - clean pc, use power settings, etc.

Windows 8.1 Ignores Power Settings And Hibernates After 5 Minutes

Jan 20, 2014

My PC ignores all power settings and hibernates after approx 5 minutes of user inactivity. It is a Dell Vostro 200, which I had been running successfully on Windows 8 Pro. The problem appears to have been the result of upgrading to Windows 8.1.

Regardless of the power scheme settings, the PC goes into hibernation after 5 minutes of "inactivity"; i.e. if there is no user keyboard or mouse input. The hibernation also ignores most background processes, so it will go into hibernation even if I am streaming internet radio. I use Windows Home Server, and the daily backup process is currently failing because the PC wakes up to start the backup, but hibernates after 5 minutes, in the middle of the backup process.

The only exception I can find is YouTube - hibernation does not occur if I watch a video longer than 5 minutes, even if there is no user input.

I have tried various suggestions from other forums, without success:

The video drivers up to date.

BIOS is up to date, and ACPI is set to S3.

I have run power settings troubleshooter which reset power settings to "Balanced".

I have tried setting power to "Always on"

I have tried a clean boot process, disabling all start ups and other services, but the problem still occurs As noted above, the PC was previously working fine, and the only change I can identify is applying the Windows 8.1 upgrade.

Maintenance :: How Safe Is The High Performance Power Plan In Windows 8.1

Sep 15, 2014

In the future I'm planning to build a new computer to replace this old hunk of junk and I'm curious as to one thing as I'm not entirely sure on this. Just how safe is using the High Performance Power Plan in Windows 8.1?

You see, my current rig is running an old i5 661, normally on the Balanced Power Plan on an old ASUS P7P55D-E Deluxe Motherboard with a GTX 660 and 4GB of RAM on 32-bit Windows 8.1.

But my future plan is to use an i5 4690K with a Corsair H110 All In One Water Cooler for CPU Cooling on a Z97 Motherboard and 8GB of RAM in 64-bit Windows 8.1.

I'm hoping to get quite a bit of performance on this next computer cause hey... I'm planning on using it for gaming and such. But also web browsing and chatting with friends. I hear how High performance is suggested for 'optimising' Windows 8.1 but how much safer is it...

And how much of a performance increase could I possibly see in comparison to the old rig?
