View 2 RepliesMy Dell Inspiron 3520 was going quite slow for unknown reasons so I decided to 'refresh' it using Windows advanced start-up setting. Since that time I have been unable to install Windows updates. Well, I can 'install' them, but they won't 'configure'. Once installed and 'configured' 100% I get this error message advising following reboot : "Failure to configure updates. Reverting changes". The laptop then stays paralysed on that screen.
This only started to happen AFTER I "refreshed" my laptop, which was running Windows 8.1 pretty-much problem-free, though a bit slowly, until a week ago. For now I have found a temporary 'fix' by disabling automatic updates; otherwise the laptop is constantly stuck on the "failure to configure updates" error page (because, obviously, it's automatically attempting to install updates). I have done all the standard troubleshooting, including running MS Fix It, Dell Dr ('My Dell' found no hardware issues), MS Malware removal and Mcafee anti-malware. All reported "no issues". I have been in command prompt and found no issues I even tried to 'refresh' the laptop again two more times. I have also spoken to two Windows "technicians" and allowed one of them to remotely access my laptop. He found no issues or "violations".
Obviously, the temporary 'fix' of turning off auto-updates isn't a long term solution, and 'refreshing' the laptop hasn't worked (it actually caused the issue). Running Windows 8 on Dell Inspiron 3520.
I'm guessing full format needed? - Would a format resolve the issue, since a 'refresh' caused it?
I have a micro-usb cable for charging my mouse that the cats chewed through. It was doing the device connect/disconnect sound over and over with an annoying popup. Oddly enough, the cable still works but now it shows as an "Unknown Device" in the Device Manager under "Other devices".
The way I did my cable management in the back of my desktop is I ran everything through a tube, so even though I have a replacement for that micro-usb, in order to remove it and replace it with the working one I'd have to spend so much time and effort. What's funny is the reason I did all of this cable management was because of the cats, I had all of my usb cords going through a separate piece of cardboard to where they plug in but they still managed to find an exposed area to chew.
So my solution was I replaced the connect/disconnect .wav with a .wav with no audio. The pop up is what is still giving me trouble though, every time it pops up it forgets that I set it to "Hide icon and notifications"
"USB Device not recognized: The last usb device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it" - How do I get this message to permanently shut up.
My printer has also been giving me a similar pop up but it's only once I boot since it's not turned on then. There has to be a better solution to either permanently tell Windows Explorer Notifications to simply resolve this error without having to stress replacing the cable with a fresh one that they'll probably also screw up.
I have build my Windows 8.1 machine recently. And I have installed multiple applications such as Adobe Acrobat Readers, and MS Office on it.
I have a strange problem happening when I restarted my PC this morning. All application that I installed have completely disappeared. I cant even find them in Control Panel under Programs and Application.
The computer instead of asking me to login using my live account, asked me to login as local user this morning, and when I login again using Live Account, ALL installed APPS are gone and machine went back to out-of-box stage.
I have noticed that applications that are launched from the Metro IU load and run much faster than the same applications launched from IE under desktop. I have even created Metro tiles for applications I normally run as they load and run much faster than launching them from the desktop. This site (Windows Eight Forms) would not load from desktop IE but loads immediately from a Metro tile I created.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI went into my power options to change some of the advanced settings and most of them are missing? I am on windows 8.1 with a week old Surface Pro 3. I want to say I read somewhere that hyper-v can cause options to be missing, but I honestly don't even know what that is and I don't have it installed.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have several printers at work all hooked up to a samba share so that the whole office can use them. We have Konica Minolta, HP and Lexmarks predominantly but some other brands as well like Kyocera.
I have a fresh Win 8.1 Pro install and i have installed the printer drivers via the Windows update mechanism for all the printers. Some i've added via the samba share some via direct ip connection.
For whatever reason i cannot add/delete or config any of the printer ports as seen in the attached screen cap. I've even tried the windows Administrator account to no avail. UAC is off and i have admin rights to the pc.
I have sought support on freenode's #windows channel and googled the hell out of this topic, to avail.
I cannot replicate the issue in Win 7.
So when I install update 2903939 it installs fine but upon reboot it goes to 7%, reboots, reboots again as soon as the background color for the login screen shows, and then says windows was unable to update.
So far I have tried:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
SFC /scannow
Restart background intelligence service
Remove extra USB devices
Disable antivirus ( I don't have one except for bitdefender)
Renaming distribution folder in %systemroot% to .old
SFC said something couldn't be repaired and I don't really understand the log. DISM said it repaired a store component or something. I am very lost on where to go next. I cannot seem to upload the CBS.log as a .txt I get an internal error.
He says the last thing the computer did was a windows updated and the day after did not start, when i start it so comes the logo forward "VI10" and a loading circle below for a 1min or 2. then you hear the fan is increasing and it is reading something, then it jumps to a black screen for 1-2 minutes then comes "Preparing to configure Windows".
I let it stand for six hours before I turned it off and start looking try start it in safe mode, have used boot setup before on XP and W7 so know how it looks / works but I can not access it anywhere, I read somewhere you could force it with F8 but do not work .
Also try to bot with cd = same shit

View 6 Replies View RelatedOutlook 2013 won't set up an email account if the TEST SEND EMAIL fails.
This is a really strange error -- if you are in some places often your ISP won't let you logon to your email server to SEND email from programs like OUTLOOK (SPAM protection amongst other things) but insist that you use their webmail unless you are actually LOGGED ON to the ISP.
ISP's have no problem with you READING Email while on say a public / other Wi-Fi system but often restrict the SENDING of emails through their servers from such Wi-Fi accesses - you often have to be logged on to your own ISP.
So if you are trying to set up the account while you are staying in a Hotel and using their broadband service it fails -- all I want is to be able to READ email until I can logon at home.
I can SEND via webmail or mobile phone so the stupid install process shouldn't stop me CREATING an account even if for the moment I can't use it for SENDING.
Rolled back to Office 2010 -- Outlook 2010 works fine - you can SKIP the test email send --this is what they should allow on Outlook 2013 as well. !!!!!
new build win 8.1 I am trying to configure an HP printer driver to digitally scan to a specific folder on a hard drive it says "the device needs to authenticate itself on the network before it can save to a network folder" then asks for my user name and password (not the wireless router name and password) direct Ethernet connection from main computer to router I have tried many variations without success how do I figure out my network computer and user name: in net speak ? e.g. ????????username ?? the Microsoft account adds a whole new level of complexity and woe is my user password my pin number or is it my MS account password or something else is my user name "Robert" as listed in windowsusers folder or is it some variation of in "netspeak" my new build screams but I am undergoing the usual trials of a new clean install (Win 8.1)

I was wondering if it was possible to get the old, unobtrusive low battery notification from Windows 7 on Windows 8? As it stands, whenever I hit 10% battery, this huge bar pops up right in the middle of my screen and minimizes anything I might be working on. This is fine in most cases, except for when I'm gaming and end up running off a cliff while trying to get the game window back up. -_- Is it possible to just have a little popup appear above the taskbar when my battery gets low, like in Windows 7? I'm really trying to like Windows 8, but stuff like this is unacceptable.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSince last night, I've had this Automatic Maintenance notification randomly pop up in Action Center which simply refuses to go away:
I've already run the maintenance multiple times, and it seems to complete just fine, but the notification never goes away and it always tells me the maintenance was delayed after it supposedly finished:
I've also gone into Task Scheduler and manually run the Regular Maintenance task per the solution here, but no dice. Also rebooted the system many times.
Ok, so here's what I keep running into.......I turn off UAC, and within a few hours I start getting a notification that I need to activate Windows 8. It's a legit install, and this only happens when I turn off the UAC.
If I turn UAC back on, then the activation is not a problem and all is good. However, if I try to re-activate with the UAC off, it runs into an error.
When I try to activate Windows 8.1 Pro, I get a messege" Windows is in notification mode" .

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just started using Windows 8 and I am getting a steady litany of system sounds that are indicating something, but without any popup, what they are trying to say. I get a simple beep or multiple beeps every 4 to 5 minutes or so throughout the day.
It is kind of similar to removing or inserting a USB device in 7, but not exactly. So I detached all USB devices and I am still getting the sounds.
So I restored my system because I had no other choice from it not booting before and it was working for a day, then when I restarted it said 'installing XX / 93 updates' so I let that run, and when It finally finished, it restarted said 'configuring windows updates XX% complete...' and then it suddenly said "Failed to configure updates. Reverting Changes." and then it looped this by restarting, trying to configure them, and then saying "Failed to configure updates. Reverting Changes." again...
I've got back into safe mode, what should I do to make it update properly again?
Someone suggested toggling "Secure Boot" in the BIOS, is that worth a try?
I am running Windows 8.1 Pro X64. Recently I have noticed that Notification Area Icons for some apps have disappeared.
A reinstall or a repair install sometimes brings them back but then they disappear after a while, and usually after the next reboot.
Have checked forums for the affected products and the only solution offered there is reinstall or repair install. I very much doubt that this issue is down to the products. It is almost certainly a Windows problem but of course Windows Tech Support offers nothing other than the usual banal references to largely irrelevant "how to" articles.
A niggle that's potentially quite a problem is that my 8.1 laptop Taskbar is not notifying me that "New Updates are Available."
I never set to install them automatically, I like to know what's going on and choose how to use my connection and processing power, but the notification from the Log In screen is easily missed and not satisfactory in my opinion. I think there's a third party piece of software to correct this, but I was wondering if there's a better way to restore the function?
is there any way to turn off this irritating message in IE 10's notification bar (when deleting browsing history)?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSome setting must have changed. Or maybe it was the 8 to 8.1 update.
I use to get a notification at the upper right when I turned on an external HD, or inserted an SD card. I could click on it, and it gave me the opportunity to open it in explorer.
Now I don't get the notification.
The device works, but I have to go to My Computer if I want to see it in explorer.
Is there a setting for this somewhere?
Is it possible to change the alert sound?
