Updates :: Getting A Notification To Activate Windows 8?
Aug 4, 2013Ok, so here's what I keep running into.......I turn off UAC, and within a few hours I start getting a notification that I need to activate Windows 8. It's a legit install, and this only happens when I turn off the UAC.
If I turn UAC back on, then the activation is not a problem and all is good. However, if I try to re-activate with the UAC off, it runs into an error.

Jul 11, 2014A niggle that's potentially quite a problem is that my 8.1 laptop Taskbar is not notifying me that "New Updates are Available."
I never set to install them automatically, I like to know what's going on and choose how to use my connection and processing power, but the notification from the Log In screen is easily missed and not satisfactory in my opinion. I think there's a third party piece of software to correct this, but I was wondering if there's a better way to restore the function?

May 28, 2014I have an Asus GAC computer with Windows 8 OEM version. When I go to Windows store I see the 8.1 upgrade notification. When I click on it I get a message asking me to do all the upadates. When I do all the updates, the Store notification disappears.
I have to uninstall some updates to have the notification back on the Windows store but still asking me to do all the available updates.
My Windows 8 version is fully activated 'ASUS OEM)

Oct 28, 2013I came back to my laptop 8 pro to find a blue band across the screen with an upgrade notification. I don't want it(8.1). Can I stop that notification coming up again. It did lock the screen and I had to log out to get arround it.

Windows 8.1 Pro X64 - Notification Area Icons Disappear
May 6, 2014I am running Windows 8.1 Pro X64. Recently I have noticed that Notification Area Icons for some apps have disappeared.
A reinstall or a repair install sometimes brings them back but then they disappear after a while, and usually after the next reboot.
Have checked forums for the affected products and the only solution offered there is reinstall or repair install. I very much doubt that this issue is down to the products. It is almost certainly a Windows problem but of course Windows Tech Support offers nothing other than the usual banal references to largely irrelevant "how to" articles.

Feb 20, 2014Lenovo laptop with Win 8.1. I uninstalled the pre-installed McAfee anti-virus with:
- Uninstall McAfee in Programs and features
- Reboot
- Run the MCPR McAfee uninstall utility
- Reboot (many times)
With that Windows Defender shows it is running, but there is no Icon in the notification area.Should there be an Icon in the Win 8 notification area, like Security Essentials in Win 7?

Jun 10, 2014I purchased a new ASUS LAPTOP which came with windows 8 installed. When i tried to restart after installing Gtalk i got this message.
"Failure configuring windows updates. reverting changes. do not turn off your computer ".
I got this on last friday i.e the 6th of june, ever since i am not able to do anything with my laptop. I don't have windows 8 dvd as well. How do I reboot it?
Model number : Asus 15634 Laptop Intel Core i3 .
I also tried pressing the power button for 15 secs , still no luck. Tried f8 f9 and windows + r and windows+ X keys no luck.

May 24, 2014After a BSOD and utter failure to boot (presumably a critical OS file damaged) I ran the recovery tools for a total factory reset.
Connected to the internet and worked for an hour or two, then tried a reboot. Windows update had 104 updates to process. It did them, then "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer"
This should take half an hour. After 90 minutes it has rebooted 5 or 6 times. It keeps reverting to the same "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" message. Looks like it might want to reboot through each of those 104 updates.
I'm going to repeat the factory reset and the FIRST thing I will do is disable updates. I'm going to see how long I can work without any updates.

May 11, 2014I just reinstalled 8 on a ssd and tried to install 8.1 from the store but it says i need to update windows first. I tried running windows update but i get an error saying "Windows could not search for new updates" error code 80240440. I tried everything I could find online and nothing seems to work. I tried restarting windows update, i tried turning off firewall, I tried reinstalling windows again and selecting "check for updates online" before installing from the cd, i tried running a check disk, and there is absolutely no program installed on the drive other than windows.

Sep 9, 2013I have a micro-usb cable for charging my mouse that the cats chewed through. It was doing the device connect/disconnect sound over and over with an annoying popup. Oddly enough, the cable still works but now it shows as an "Unknown Device" in the Device Manager under "Other devices".
The way I did my cable management in the back of my desktop is I ran everything through a tube, so even though I have a replacement for that micro-usb, in order to remove it and replace it with the working one I'd have to spend so much time and effort. What's funny is the reason I did all of this cable management was because of the cats, I had all of my usb cords going through a separate piece of cardboard to where they plug in but they still managed to find an exposed area to chew.
So my solution was I replaced the connect/disconnect .wav with a .wav with no audio. The pop up is what is still giving me trouble though, every time it pops up it forgets that I set it to "Hide icon and notifications"
"USB Device not recognized: The last usb device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it" - How do I get this message to permanently shut up.
My printer has also been giving me a similar pop up but it's only once I boot since it's not turned on then. There has to be a better solution to either permanently tell Windows Explorer Notifications to simply resolve this error without having to stress replacing the cable with a fresh one that they'll probably also screw up.

Mar 13, 2014I was reviewing my windows updates and saw two optional updates that were pending. First one was for MS office and it went through fine. Second one was some update to AMD vision control center. During that update screen flashed couple of times and went for re-start. After that I am unable to get into the system. I tried safe mode/debugging/low resolution mode etc.. But all resulted in the same blue screen with the 0xc000021a error message.
I am able to go only to command prompt. Nothing else (fortunately I am able to backup my photos by connecting external hard drive and using command prompt). I checked the SRT log file but it doesn't say any issue. All passed.
I tried refresh PC but it came back and said "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes made".
I tried using win ISO image bootable flash drive. It couldn't get through me in (I just tried with PC repair option when I booted with ISO image).
Is there a way I can get over it without re-installing?

Sep 15, 2014I am currently having an issue on my laptop at the moment where it's stuck in an infinite loop of 'reverting changes' after having tried to update and failed at 30%, I have done some reading at ways to boot into safe mode however it would appear windows 8 doesn't give me the chance.
I do not have a copy of my original windows 8 disc and am at a loss!
I have tried spamming F4, F8, F10 buttons and none are allowing me to enter boot mode.

Jun 21, 2014I just bought new Asus Vivotab Smart Windows 8 tablet, after the very first windows update it failed to install some of the updates, and then after the reboot I am now stuck with the message "Failure configuring Windows updates, reverting changes".
It never gets any further than this, it never reverts, I have left it running for an entire day and have restarted several times.
This is a tablet, so there is no keyboard so I cannot press any F keys to get into recovery mode, and no CD to boot from etc.

Dec 22, 2013I don't see any option to hide the updates which you don't want to install. In windows 7, one can simply right click and choose hide the update, but no such thing in windows 8.1.

Screen Greyed In Normal Mode But Vibrant In Safe Mode
Jan 2, 2014My screen seems to have a grey filter overlaying it. See attached.
When i booted it in safe mode, the screen is showing the right vibrant colors. When i booted it back to normal mode, the screen is greyish but strangely the mouse is showing the correct white color.
I have googled across numerous website but none of them bring me closer to the issue. I have read the thread, Personalize Suddenly Greyed Out but this is not what i encountered. The options or buttons or selections did not grey out, it affects the screen only.
I cannot afford a system restore because i shared this laptop with my gf.
Getting Win 7 Low Battery Notification Back On Win 8?
Jun 8, 2014I was wondering if it was possible to get the old, unobtrusive low battery notification from Windows 7 on Windows 8? As it stands, whenever I hit 10% battery, this huge bar pops up right in the middle of my screen and minimizes anything I might be working on. This is fine in most cases, except for when I'm gaming and end up running off a cliff while trying to get the game window back up. -_- Is it possible to just have a little popup appear above the taskbar when my battery gets low, like in Windows 7? I'm really trying to like Windows 8, but stuff like this is unacceptable.

I've already run the maintenance multiple times, and it seems to complete just fine, but the notification never goes away and it always tells me the maintenance was delayed after it supposedly finished:
I've also gone into Task Scheduler and manually run the Regular Maintenance task per the solution here, but no dice. Also rebooted the system many times.

Sep 19, 2013I just started using Windows 8 and I am getting a steady litany of system sounds that are indicating something, but without any popup, what they are trying to say. I get a simple beep or multiple beeps every 4 to 5 minutes or so throughout the day.
It is kind of similar to removing or inserting a USB device in 7, but not exactly. So I detached all USB devices and I am still getting the sounds.
