View 6 RepliesI am running Windows 8.1 Pro X64. Recently I have noticed that Notification Area Icons for some apps have disappeared.
A reinstall or a repair install sometimes brings them back but then they disappear after a while, and usually after the next reboot.
Have checked forums for the affected products and the only solution offered there is reinstall or repair install. I very much doubt that this issue is down to the products. It is almost certainly a Windows problem but of course Windows Tech Support offers nothing other than the usual banal references to largely irrelevant "how to" articles.
I am running windows 8 and I would like to delete unused icons from the notification area. Can this be done?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed mouse software on my 8.1 Pro laptop. The software starts every time I start my computer and shows an icon in the taskbar. There is one very annoying thing that it does, when I first login to my computer the notification icon for the mouse software pops up a window saying that it's running:
I opened Customize Notification Area to see if I could turn off notifications BUT keep the icon there (so I can right-click it and open the software).
I noticed there is no option to "Show Icon And Hide Notifications".
So the only way i can keep that annoying popup message from appearing every time I login is to hide everything. But then, as I said above, I won't be able to right click the icon and start the software.
Is there a way I can show icons but hide notifications?
I noticed when I was looking at the custom notification area window that there were entries for programs that I no longer have on my machine:
Is there a way to cleanup/remove these?
Lenovo laptop with Win 8.1. I uninstalled the pre-installed McAfee anti-virus with:
- Uninstall McAfee in Programs and features
- Reboot
- Run the MCPR McAfee uninstall utility
- Reboot (many times)
With that Windows Defender shows it is running, but there is no Icon in the notification area.Should there be an Icon in the Win 8 notification area, like Security Essentials in Win 7?
I disabled all of the OneDrive sync settings on my PC and checked the Startup programs, still OneDrive icon shows. How to get rid of this?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have installed a new program (Soundswitch) that I want to keep and I need it running in the background. What I don't need is the icon in the notification area. I only use the program's keyboard shortcut and have no need for the GUI. I keep my notification area very clean and only have icons for the three things I actually use in it. Most programs offer a way to disable their own notification icon, but this one does not. And, unfortunately, hiding the icon through the Windows 8 options created another icon (arrow), which I don't want either.
Is there a way that I can keep the program running but have the icon removed from the notification area?
Windows 8.1 upgraded from windows 8
So far I have Clicked the arrow to view Hidden icons (it is not visible)Click on Customize to Show icons and notifications (AVAST is not even on the list)Opened Action Center to see that AVAST is turned on and up to date
It was there and then it's gone. I have uninstalled it and then installed a new copy from a fresh download. Maybe this is something new but I feel a lot more secure with the icons showing.
Is there a way to change what temp is being displayed in the notification area? In mine, it showing 31 degrees which is associated to Temp1 and HD1...being both are the same. I would like it to display my CPU temp.

Now my task-bar is crowded with all these icons and so I must put them back. The problem is, I have tried clicking all over the task bar but can't find the tool/option to do it.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThis is an absolute CLASSIC example of a TOTALLY BOVINE use of Metro - replacing the old accessories==>calculator by the Metro Calculator.
The wretched thing works Totally in Full screen -- what use is that to Man or Beast - especially if you have a Form or some text (not spread sheets) on your screen and you need to refer to them for your calculations.. What you need is a POPUP calculator that they had from the first versions of Windows 3 until Windows 7.
The calculator could also be useful as a popup on TOUCH screens too if you need it - but the stupid full screen thing -- totally useless.
I as actually quite surprised when I searched calculator and it operated like that. - Normally I use a nice calculator app on my mobile phone - but the battery is empty so I need the computer !!!. how to you take a screenshot of a small area on the screen.
I have Windows 8.1 and the latest Outlook and I cannot get it to work like the Old version and automatically insert the (default) area code....
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if it was possible to get the old, unobtrusive low battery notification from Windows 7 on Windows 8? As it stands, whenever I hit 10% battery, this huge bar pops up right in the middle of my screen and minimizes anything I might be working on. This is fine in most cases, except for when I'm gaming and end up running off a cliff while trying to get the game window back up. -_- Is it possible to just have a little popup appear above the taskbar when my battery gets low, like in Windows 7? I'm really trying to like Windows 8, but stuff like this is unacceptable.

I have been getting the infamous BSOD when restarting my laptop with the error message of "page fault in nonpaged area". I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with an intel i3 2.40ghz processor, 6gb of ram and a 500gb hard drive.
It mostly happens when doing a system restart but occasionally happens
when booting up after the system has been shut down, I have uploaded the zip file that I got from running the SF Debug tool.
How to see other computer(s) in a free wifi spot area?
The case: We have here 2 laptops (Windows 8) side by side in free wifi spot . I know that in such spots, for safety purposes I have to set my laptop not to share and mine is set accordingly.
But how can I see the other laptop next to mine on my own screen? It is my mom's brand new laptop. It is not set for safe hot spot browsing by default. So, I should be able to see it, but how?
So, question is how to set my laptop to show my mom's laptop sitting next to mine? I believe something must be set in control panels, perhaps?
I just recently purchased a windows machine and I would like to disable the right click area of the trackpad. Since you can use two fingers to right click, I don't see any reason to have that area designated for that purpose.
View 9 Replies View RelatedFor the past few days, my laptop has been crashing upon waking from hibernation. I initially thought it was a trojan or virus, but after poking around more I think its either a HD or driver issue. I installed Who Crashed and Blue Screen View, which mostly return ntoskrnl.exe, but have also thrown in tcpip.sys, AMPPAL.sys, and usbhub.sys. Asus Install seems to think I'm up to date on all the drivers, but after looking at some of these files, I'm not so sure. Dumps attached.

Since last night, I've had this Automatic Maintenance notification randomly pop up in Action Center which simply refuses to go away:
I've already run the maintenance multiple times, and it seems to complete just fine, but the notification never goes away and it always tells me the maintenance was delayed after it supposedly finished:
I've also gone into Task Scheduler and manually run the Regular Maintenance task per the solution here, but no dice. Also rebooted the system many times.
Ok, so here's what I keep running into.......I turn off UAC, and within a few hours I start getting a notification that I need to activate Windows 8. It's a legit install, and this only happens when I turn off the UAC.
If I turn UAC back on, then the activation is not a problem and all is good. However, if I try to re-activate with the UAC off, it runs into an error.
When I try to activate Windows 8.1 Pro, I get a messege" Windows is in notification mode" .
