View 8 RepliesI just installed mouse software on my 8.1 Pro laptop. The software starts every time I start my computer and shows an icon in the taskbar. There is one very annoying thing that it does, when I first login to my computer the notification icon for the mouse software pops up a window saying that it's running:
I opened Customize Notification Area to see if I could turn off notifications BUT keep the icon there (so I can right-click it and open the software).
I noticed there is no option to "Show Icon And Hide Notifications".
So the only way i can keep that annoying popup message from appearing every time I login is to hide everything. But then, as I said above, I won't be able to right click the icon and start the software.
Is there a way I can show icons but hide notifications?
I noticed when I was looking at the custom notification area window that there were entries for programs that I no longer have on my machine:
Is there a way to cleanup/remove these?
Lenovo laptop with Win 8.1. I uninstalled the pre-installed McAfee anti-virus with:
- Uninstall McAfee in Programs and features
- Reboot
- Run the MCPR McAfee uninstall utility
- Reboot (many times)
With that Windows Defender shows it is running, but there is no Icon in the notification area.Should there be an Icon in the Win 8 notification area, like Security Essentials in Win 7?
I have installed a new program (Soundswitch) that I want to keep and I need it running in the background. What I don't need is the icon in the notification area. I only use the program's keyboard shortcut and have no need for the GUI. I keep my notification area very clean and only have icons for the three things I actually use in it. Most programs offer a way to disable their own notification icon, but this one does not. And, unfortunately, hiding the icon through the Windows 8 options created another icon (arrow), which I don't want either.
Is there a way that I can keep the program running but have the icon removed from the notification area?
Windows 8.1 upgraded from windows 8
So far I have Clicked the arrow to view Hidden icons (it is not visible)Click on Customize to Show icons and notifications (AVAST is not even on the list)Opened Action Center to see that AVAST is turned on and up to date
It was there and then it's gone. I have uninstalled it and then installed a new copy from a fresh download. Maybe this is something new but I feel a lot more secure with the icons showing.
Is there a way to change what temp is being displayed in the notification area? In mine, it showing 31 degrees which is associated to Temp1 and HD1...being both are the same. I would like it to display my CPU temp.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows 8.1 Pro X64. Recently I have noticed that Notification Area Icons for some apps have disappeared.
A reinstall or a repair install sometimes brings them back but then they disappear after a while, and usually after the next reboot.
Have checked forums for the affected products and the only solution offered there is reinstall or repair install. I very much doubt that this issue is down to the products. It is almost certainly a Windows problem but of course Windows Tech Support offers nothing other than the usual banal references to largely irrelevant "how to" articles.
I am running windows 8 and I would like to delete unused icons from the notification area. Can this be done?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using Onedrive since it was skydrive under windows 7 , now that I am on 8.1 update 1 pro x64 I am still using it but recently I've come across with a problem.
The onedrive tray icon says that onedrive is starting up all the time , no matter what I am doing e.g. : syncing or adding files and the icon remain the same like in the picture.
I have a problem with SkyDrive. Windows 8 is now using OneDrive, but I still have the SkyDrive icon shown in Explorer on my computer. When I try to open or delete it, it does not work. What should I do?
View 1 Replies View RelatedUntil the other day my drive was working perfectly. Since then I have made no changes to the system, but syncing has stopped. The drive icon constantly says checking for changes and then appears to crash. It has also started "finding files" and i am unable to change options to view online of offline while "setup is being completed" the trouble is it never completes... I can add docs etc from the web and it will sync on other PCs but my win 8.1 tablet refuses to play ball. I have spoken with Microsoft and they want me to pay for the solution (maybe). I have tried the troubleshooter but no luck.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is an absolute CLASSIC example of a TOTALLY BOVINE use of Metro - replacing the old accessories==>calculator by the Metro Calculator.
The wretched thing works Totally in Full screen -- what use is that to Man or Beast - especially if you have a Form or some text (not spread sheets) on your screen and you need to refer to them for your calculations.. What you need is a POPUP calculator that they had from the first versions of Windows 3 until Windows 7.
The calculator could also be useful as a popup on TOUCH screens too if you need it - but the stupid full screen thing -- totally useless.
I as actually quite surprised when I searched calculator and it operated like that. - Normally I use a nice calculator app on my mobile phone - but the battery is empty so I need the computer !!!. how to you take a screenshot of a small area on the screen.
Since the last Windows updates a couple of days, I frequently get "OneDrive has stopped working" messages.
Running Win 8.1 with Update 1 and all available updates.
I have three machines running Windows 8.1 Update 1 and for some reason one of the machines does not like OneDrive. When I first boot the system the OneDrive Cloud appears in the tray. However, as soon as I hover the mouse over it to see the sync status the Cloud Icon goes away and I think I get the SkyDive 1000 error in the Event Log. I don't know what I did to screw it up on this machine

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy notebook is setup with a local account instead being logged in with a Microsoft. Since Microsoft doesn't allow you to use OneDrive in Windows 8.1 with a local or network domain, I'm using the program syncDriver so I can continue using OneDrive on my notebook.
The issue I'm having is that when I add a link to OneDrive in my Windows Explorer Favorites, the link will get removed at some point without my interaction. My guess is that Windows is removing the link from favorites but I can't figure out when or why it's doing this.
how to stop Windows from doing this?
Whenever OneDrive tries to automatically sync its files (or manually too), there's a pop-up on the desktop saying: OneDrive Sync Engine Host - OneDrive Sync Engine Host has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program.
I have googled it a lot and tried the CMD command posted as a solution, but it didn't work unfortunately.
maybe fully reinstall OneDrive as it is a standard feature of Windows 8.1 Pro...
I hate it when I double click a file and Windows 8.1 pops up a message saying I have other apps that can handle this extension.
I disabled this notification through GPEDIT.MSC, it works now when I open pics/docs/etc.... but let's say I install another app, for example, when I install Pale Moon Browser,
I hate Windows 8 so much! Even with a start menu replacement, this ticks me off, it's crappy Wireless LAN manager sucks, its performance is less when I benchmarks my SSD
I can go back to 7, but I am trying to fix a few things if I could just to benefit from the UEFI boot mode as for installing 7, I have to enable legacy ROM which is much slower during boot.
is there a way to completely disable the OneDrive Sync Engine process from starting up with windows? I can't find it in the startup menu. Sometimes when it loads it will lock up my computer for about ~5 mins until anything becomes responsive. I was able to grab a screen shot of the process loading in the notifications. I just would like to disable OneDrive 100% if possible (running Win 8.1, update 1) as I do not use that service for anything.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having a strange problem with OneDrive. I am running windows 8.1 Update 1 Pro 64bit + all updates.
On my desktop the OneDrive app works properly. It synchs as expected between my desktop and my OneDrive website. In system tray, the OneDrive icon shows it syncs regularly.
However, when I check my system in the Reliability Monitor, the reliability history shows a critical message "Microsoft OneDrive stopped working". If OneDrive works properly, then what is the reason for this warning message? Below is the detail I get when I click on the message. This message started to appear about 13 days ago.

I'm a new Win 8.1 user trying to setup a more normal looking desktop on my wife's new laptop.
In an attempt to populate the desktop toolbar with apps on the start page, I found it can't be done as explained in the tutorial. Either when I touch/hold the app icon, or right mouse click, the app is checked and the bottom application bar appears. However, on the app bar my only choices are: "Unpin from Start", "Uninstall", or "Find in Start". I'm not given the option of "Pin to taskbar". I also don't see the choices: "Open new window", "Run as admin", or "Open file location" that I see in an example under that tutorial.
I'm running this account in admin mode. The most recent Windows update was 5/2014, with no new updates available when checked today. Is there something wrong or a control panel setting I need to enable to see the other choices?
This has only started recently when trying to reply to an email from the desktop or send a new email from the people icon, I start to type several words of the message, press the space bar to type the next word and the screen changes (flips back to show the icons) and the message or reply disappears.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Office 2013 two weeks ago. The setup automatically pinned Office apps on my start menu. But after couple of days, the icons from some of the office apps automatically got erased from the tiles and now it looks so ugly. I tried re-pinning apps on start menu but it didn't work. I also tried sfc /scannow but it was in vein. How to fix it and get the icons back on the tiles?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI notice a short flicker from desktop icons when you press the "win+d" short cut. Sometimes some application windows also flicker when you use this short cut.
I guess the reason is some kind of refresh for the icons, actually it seems to be the same behaviour when you use the context menu on the desktop (right mouse click) and use the command "refresh".
It can easily be seen when you are on the desktop with all it's icons and have a small window open and then press win+d a couple of times. The Icons refresh and therefore flicker. That should be smoothed out.I notice this behaviour in Windows 8, Win7, XP.
This is no problem with a similar command in OSX or Ubuntu.
Windows 8. In windows 7 when I switched from dual display to single display all windows stayed exactly where they were so when I switched back to dual display everything was were it supposed to be (i.e. chat windows + music player on side display)
In windows 8 each time I do that (switch from double display) all windows from second display are moved to the main/only one and upon switching back they are not moved back which is...
Can I somehow make windows 8 to behave like win 7?!
My "Notification Area Icons" was not working right, so I opened it and checked the box "show all icons and notifications on the task bar" and it did.... Now my task-bar is crowded with all these icons and so I must put them back. The problem is, I have tried clicking all over the task bar but can't find the tool/option to do it.
