DOS And System Messages Not Displayed?
Feb 6, 2014My Windows 8.1 desktop system is not able to show DOS-based messages. That is, messages from the system as it is starting up and before Windows opens, and other DOS-like displays. For example, Windows 8.1 has a "Windows Memory Diagnostics" app. When I start this app from within Windows, nothing is shown on the monitor.
For example, upon powering on my computer the first thing I used to see was the Gateway monitor logo. Now nothing shows until Windows boots.
For example, the computer crashed unexpectedly and began restarting immediately. I was not presented with the typical screen that offers to start in safe mode. Instead, it takes a minute or two and Windows appears.
For example, (pure speculation) when the computer crashes I am wondering if the system is trying to show me the Blue Screen of Death. But nothing is shown at all and the computer reboots.
Suspects: I have a dual monitor system with an XFX R7700 graphics card. It was suggested I remove the card and plug in one monitor with VGA cable. That "fixed" it and I am seeing DOS-like displays.
Related Problem: My computer has been crashing unexpectedly and often -- several times a day. When it does it is so immediate and complete it is as if the power plug had been pulled. It starts up again immediately but may take a bit more time to get going than usual. Then everything is fine until it crashes again.
Administrator Rights Error Messages?
Mar 24, 2014Win 8.1 Pro x64, single-user computer. I don't know if it started with updating from 8 to 8.1 in December, but roughly since then I've getting been a fair number of error messages while saving or changing a program's default setting, saying directly or indirectly that I need administrator rights to do the operation. My user account is Standard and shows me as Administrator, and everywhere I look says I am Administrator with full administrator rights. Yet, as the screenshots below show, I now can't save to the system drive (C:) and can't even uncheck the default file manager setting within the XYplorer, my normal file manager. The other day I couldn't save an extracted folder under in its intended program folder in Program Files (x86), something I did numerous times with new versions of the same program under Win 8 and Win 7. What is the way to overcome this?

Feb 24, 2014Recently my taskbar has begun to obscure messages that appear and I can't click on the message now.
For example sometimes when I go to a website I would get a warning message saying this website wants to ....
Allow once or Allow Never. I'm pretty sure these used to appear above the taskbar now they are underneath it and I can't access the message to click on Once or Never.
Also I have a desktop programme that has certain options at the very bottom of the screen and now the taskbar won't let me access this either. I can see through the taskbar but can't action anything.

How To Save To Folders Without Permissions Messages
Sep 9, 2013I'm on a new laptop running Windows 8 Pro, and I'm running into permission issues. I just created an icon (using Axialis Icon workshop), and tried to save it to a folder which I myself created. But I got this message:
C:Program FilesIconsIN-USEGS.ico
You don't have permission to save in this location.
Contact the administrator to obtain permission.
Would you like to save in the My Pictures folder instead? No, I wouldn't like to save in My Pictures. I never use it. How can I get permission to save to the folder I want? I'm a sole user; I'm a member of administrators; I've tried (unsuccessfully so far) to give myself permission to run all programs without being nagged.
I suspect that taking ownership of the C:Program Files might do the trick, but it seems like an extreme measure. Should I simply follow the steps in Brink's tutorial 'How to Allow or Deny Access Permissions to Users and Groups in Windows 8'?
Browsers/Mail :: Messages In Outbox Won't Send

Jun 12, 2014For a while now I've been getting BSODs, sometimes while playing games, sometime when watching Youtube, sometimes when using other programs. I'm suspicious of a driver issue, but when I tried using verifier.exe and rebooting I get another BSOD - "driver_verifier_iomanager_violation" followed by it rebooting a couple of times, more BSODs, giving an error and forcing a system restore.
Zip attached - I have a whole load other minidumps going back a couple of months if they're useful!
Windows Phone 8 - Finding Text Messages?

Phone is Nokia Lumia 520 - ATT
I have 2 groups of contacts, which are 'family' and 'common contacts'. I pull all contacts from outlook online and facebook, in addition to the phone itself. So family and common contacts do not have all my contacts listed in them, because there are quite a few.
These contact 'boxes' tell me who has texted me in the past, by saying 'New Message', etc. Also, my lock screen tells me if I have missed texts, calls, etc.

I have more than 7 messages listed on the lock screen that I cannot find the source to. They aren't in my family or common contacts or it would display 'new message' in the green box, so they must be from someone else in my address book. Also, whenever someone who is not a family or common contact messages me, I get the message, but no notification except on the lock screen (which says how many new messages I have, but not who from).
How To Disable Messages From Upper Right Corner Of Screen
Nov 8, 2012how to disable those messages that slide out from the upper right corner of the screen.
I've tried disabling notifications for 3 hours but it doesn't disable the notification that pops out every time that I go to print a document.
It's basically warning me every time that I print a page on my printer that the ink is low. I know it's low, I will probably be able to still print a hundred or more pages before the cartridges actually have to be replaced.
The main problem is that the way that I have to do real life work, I need to print one page documents one after another, so in an afternoon I may end up printing 150 separate pages, so that means I get that message sliding out 150 times and the warning sound playing 150 times, about once every 20 seconds or so as I submit each page for printing.
Anyway, probably more than you wanted to know, so how to turn off the notifications that appear in the upper right corner of my screen.
Maintenance :: Repeated (Not Responding) Messages In Windows 8 Pro
Nov 27, 2012I saw the other thread here about "Windows 8 Pro Randomly Freezing," but I think I'm seeing something slightly different. In my case, I'm getting random, repeated instances of various desktop applications temporarily "locking up" and displaying a "Not Responding" message in the title bar of the effected app.
I see this most commonly in Firefox (32-bit version, v17.0 release). These lock-ups last roughly a minute. It seems to minimize the Firefox window (yes, even when not responding, window controls are operative) and then restore it. It will still display the "Not Responding" message, but this seems to clear within 10 or 15 seconds. Not sure this is a fix, and it could be coincidental.
While I initially thought my problem was Firefox, I'm seeing it in other apps, including Evernote and Windows Explorer. I think on a couple of occasions I actually saw this "Not Responding" message appear in dialog boxes.
Windows 8 Messages App Doesn't Work Properly
Sep 8, 2012I really like Windows 8, but I have a problem with the app that controls messages. It's linked with Facebook, so whenever one of my friends is messaging me, I'm can answer from the app. Pretty smart, I think.
However, I have a problem. I have to friends with same name and last name.
My problem:
Friend number 1 is chatting with me.
Friend number 2's profile picture appear in the app.
Sometime friend number 2 recieves the message I'm sending to friend number 1.
Another problem is that the app doesn't seem to figure out if I already read the message on Facebook.

Debugging :: Random Error Messages Appears In BSODSs
Sep 15, 2014I have a Samsung R580 laptop and bad things appeared two days ago and continues until now.
The first thing happened is my computer freezes while I'm doing normal things with it. No way for Ctrl-Alt-Del, no way for soft reset. All I could do is Power off the computer, and then turn it on. After turning on, I saw that the system could not boot but stopping at POST screen. If I Ctrl-Alt-Del at that time, it can boot to Windows. If I let the system freezes again, the procedure returns. If I shut down Windows by myself, the next time I turn on the laptop is OK, no freezing at boot time but freezing in Windows will be a certain fact.
The symptom returns after some random time. Maybe 1 hour, maybe more or less.
Initially I thought it was the cooling system problem. I had the laptop to service, they clean it carefully and the heating problem could be bypassed.
Nevertheless, the problem still came after I brought the laptop home.
I wanna seek for minidump file. Things I did to have it are as follow
The OS did not ask me to restart but I did it to avoid any complicated things.
The crashes still occurred and after a long time waiting, I saw this BSOD screen
After a long time waiting (the record of waiting is the amount of 5 hours 30 mins), the collecting process is still 0%. No minidump file found.
I formatted the C: partition and reinstall Windows 8.1. Just Windows and Firefox, no more softwares. The BSOD problem still occur, but the error code changed to CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIE. Still no minidump file.
Memtest86+ shows no errors. As the below picture

Aug 5, 2013So, yahoo web mail's giving me grief on both this Windows 8 machine and my vista machine, which I'd done a fresh zero out and software reload on, neither machine will load yahoo messages, keeps spitting up error code 45s...
I saw they had a yahoo for windows 8 app available, lets try that! no such luck, yahoo mail Windows 8 app is doing the EXACT same thing.. sans the error code 45s.. Getting grief from their yahoo email?
The snapshot below is what it HAD been tossing up nonstop before the error 45s started saying hi.. as you can see..I had alot of mail tabs open on the mail screen..they were all spitting up errors.

Keep Getting Messages In Action Center That Say Defender Needs To Scan Computer?
Apr 26, 2013Every few days I get a message in the Action Center that says I need to update and Run Defender.
I have real time protection and everything else turn on, why doesn't it do this on it's own.
Also I don't see any options as there used to be about when to run scans i.e. time and how often etc.
As far as I can see it has never quarantined anything but when I manually run a scan it come up clean, not surprising I guess because I run Malwarebytes every day, and SuperAntiSpyware regularly, and I'm using Comodo firewall.
I did run a fake test virus and it caught it immediately so it seems to be working fine.

So I signed into the metro style Skype app on windows 8.1 but could not find voice messages. I tried on the surface rt app but no option for voice messages. I tried logging into the Skype website and again could not find my messages.
So how does one listen to their voice messages in Skype?

Oct 19, 2013I bought a new laptop (Vaio Pro) a couple weeks ago, and it's been bluescreening repeatedly ever since (about 20 times in two weeks). I'd send it back to the manufacturer, but I'm currently being interviewed for several jobs, each of which requires an interview presentation, so I absolutely definitely need access to it at the moment, and that's unlikely to change in the next few weeks sadly.
I've attached the Diagnostic Tool output.
The error messages appear unrelated, which I would guess is symptomatic of a fairly low level problem.? The most common ones are "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" and "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA", but there are others (see dump files).
There's no obvious pattern to when the crashes occur, except maybe a very slight increased probability when playing a game (although it still happens when I'm working as well) .
Maintenance :: Windows 8 - Temporary Freezes And Occasional (Not Responding) Messages
Mar 3, 2013Temporary freezes and occasional "not responding" messages are not often seen in Windows 8, but occur much more frequently than they do in W7. Same hardware, same software. Only the drives and a few drivers differ.
These hesitations arise in various programs or while manipulating UI options, and have since the earliest Windows 8 betas, though they have become less frequent with each release. No forum messages that I have come across relate specifically to this random issue.
Additionally, Windows 8 is a multitasking slug as contrasted to W7 when, for example, a large file is downloading in the background. Open another program in W7 and it pops up almost immediately; open in Windows 8 and it takes 15-30'. Priority has been assigned to both "programs" and "background services." Made no difference.
2600 Intel CPU, ASUS P8P67le MB, NVidia 210 GPU, at least 28G free space on each drive.
How to overcome it?
Various Blue Screen Of Death Error Messages - Have To Reboot Computer
Jun 22, 2014Every few days I get a blue screen if death error message and have to reboot my computer. The error messages are rarely the same. Today's message was Page_fault-in_nonpaged_area (igdkmd 32.sys), however, as I said, I receive many other messages. I have googled the various messages and the usual advice is to disconnect my various bits of hardware (printer, scanner, external hard drive, router and Inport {for recording from a turntable). I am supposed to see whether the BSOD appears after each piece of hardware is removed. This isn't practical as the errors aren't occurring consistently or every day so I wouldn't easily be able to tell which hardware is causing the problem.

Jul 2, 2013My Windows 8 Mail app shows I have 3 UNREAD messages in my inbox, but I dont actually have any unread emails. I have gone through and opened every single email, but it still displays 3 unread emails. When a new email comes through, it goes to 4 unread emails, but when I open the new one it reverts back to 3. Its as though its stuck? How to fix this, aside from uninstalling and reinstalling the program, but then I have to remove a few apps with it (calender etc) and that will lose too much stuff....

Oct 18, 2013I've just built a new computer that has a 2nd hand HDD as the secondary drive. It was causing messages to appear like "Hard drive failure imminent - do you want to back up the drive". Since I was still setting up everything on the primary drive I disabled the messages by clicking "Do not show these messages again". Now I realise I should enable the message and remove the offending HDD. I'm running windows 8.1.
How do I re-enable these messages?
Network / Sharing :: Intermittent Internet Connectivity / Varying Error Messages
Aug 26, 2014For about a week now, my computer has had intermittent internet access. It'll work anywhere from about 10 seconds to 45 minutes or so before cutting out. When it disconnects, it usually corrects itself within the next minute or so, or disconnecting/reconnecting to the network, running the troubleshooter, or turning on/off wifi will correct the issue slightly quicker.
When running the troubleshooter, I've seen about every error it has. Usually "Default gateway is unavailable." Sometimes an IP error, sometimes "network cable is unplugged," sometimes it'll tell me I have a router or modem error, or to contact my ISP. It varies. I've seen up to 3 errors at once, and then the next time the Troubleshooter runs it'll give me another entirely. The network itself is fine. A number of other devices function consistently throughout the day as my PC has issues. This PC worked on this current network for about 3 weeks prior to failing.
Normally, it thinks it's connected. Sometimes it shows the yellow symbol in the bar and says no internet access. Usually depends on how long it cuts out for.

I've checked for viruses (none), refreshed the PC (not a full restore, but the one that does not remove files, just programs and settings), done a couple things in command prompt, and updated the driver.
Audio :: Realtek HD Audio Driver - Keep Getting Error Messages That Force Computer To Restart?
Aug 21, 2014Recently I decided to go ahead and update to the Windows 8.1 version of the Realtek HD Audio Driver. I procrastinated because it told me I'd have to uninstall the original audio driver and I knew it would take a while to do everything needed. It didn't work that after uninstalling the original audio driver, then restarting like Windows told me to do, I kept getting error messages that forced my computer to restart until eventually my computer let me log in and install the updated audio driver.
However, with the updated version of this driver I had the same issue I got with the original one only much much worse. The original Realtek HD Audio Driver that I had on my computer made music and videos sound absolutely awful when headphones were plugged in. I found out that this is because the driver automatically puts on so-called "enhancements" whenever headphones are plugged in. This was a very simple fix, simply go to "Sound", then under "Playback" you click on "Speakers", then go to "Enhancements" and check the box labeled "Disable all sound effects." Then sound through headphones would return to normal.
Well, with the Window 8.1 version of this audio driver, I can do the same thing, but it never stays that way. Every time I plug in my headphones, it resets back to having enhancements. The strange thing though is that it says the enhancements are disabled but when I reactivate the enhancements(No difference in sound quality) then deactivate it again, suddenly the sound through my headphones is back to normal.
Did the audio driver not install properly? Is there something I can do to permanently disable the audio enhancements?
Disk Usage - Getting Error Messages Saying That Disk Is Almost Full?
Jan 9, 2014I'm running windows 8 on a partition so I use it mostly for gaming. I have 115 GB on the partition, and when I totaled all the files in my Bootcamp drive it comes to a total of about 80 GB, 50 from games, 20 from the OS. However, I'm constantly getting error messages saying that my disk is almost full and that 105 gigabytes have been used. I've tried CCleaner and disk cleanup but nothing big is found. So why would it be using space greater than what can be seen in the disk when using explorer and is there any way to fix this error (if it is one)?

Nov 17, 2012I just got a new laptop and tried to put the Microsoft programs in. It all went well until trying to organize the Start. My Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) are all on the desktop and I've tried to pin them to Start, but I don't see the usual "pin to start" button when I right-click. I've also tried to create shortcuts and searched through the apps to pin, but none of them worked. Is there a way I can pin them?
