Maintenance :: Disk Cleanup Gets Stuck When Reaches Windows Update Cleanup Stage

Aug 15, 2013

I've done a clean install of Windows 8 + installed all Windows updates.

After doing so I ran the disk clean-up tool to remove temp files and saved files from Windows updates, however I have ran into a problem. The disk clean-up tool gets stuck when it reaches the Windows update Clean-up stage. It's literally been on there for the past hour. When restarting it does say configuring updates but no % bar and also would just get stuck there unless you manually reboot.

Updates :: Disk Cleanup Hangs Trying To Do Windows Update Cleanup

Sep 15, 2014

I'm running 8.1 with all updates on, supposedly.

In Control Panel, Troubleshooting, System & Security, Fix Problems with Windows Update, Advanced, Run as Administrator: It says it fixed the problem (whatever that may be). I rerun it. It says it fixed the problem. This goes on ad infinitum. It never says there was nothing to fix.

I have run 'sfc/ scannow' and 'Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth'. The former found nothing. I can't recall whether Dism found anything, but if it did, it fixed it (no errors).

I have also tried Safe Boot and logging on as Administrator, then running Disk Cleanup. It still hangs.

Maintenance :: Disk Cleanup Not Deleting Files?

Jun 8, 2014

I recently ran a Disk Cleanup as part of my regular maintenance on my new computer. It had over 2.18GB of files to cleanup. That seemed a little high considering I run it every week to 2 weeks. It said it deleted all the files. I ran the Scan Disk again to be sure and it still had 2.18GB of files. I ran it again. Same result. I have a ton of room on the computer right now, but this could be a major problem down the road. Why my Disk Cleanup would appear to be working and then not delete anything?

Maintenance :: Disk Usage Stuck At 100% - Laptop Freezes?

Aug 16, 2014

I have a HP Pavillion Sleekbook 15-b002ee with Third generation core i5 processor 1.7 GHz, 500 GB Hard disk and 4 GB of RAM installed. Windows 8 came pre installed on it.

I bought this laptop 11 months ago and it worked fine for 10 months and then from the last month its presenting unusual problems. My disk usage is stuck at 100% and the laptop freezes and never lets me work or do anything. Heres what i have already done to solve the issue but have been unsuccessful:

1) I have reset my PC completely and reinstalled windows 8 using the factory setup. Didnt solve the issue, newly installed windows displays the disk usage 100% and the performance is same i.e the system freezes.

2) I have tried adjusting my paging file, no change made a difference to the performance of my laptop. The default system managed Paging file size is something around 3.89 Gb. Does my problem have anything to do with my paging file?

3) disabling the "Windows Search" and "Superfetch" services and still it didnt solve the problem.

4) I have also run checkdisk on my hard drive completely. It took me a complete day to do so but still no change.

5) Before resetting my laptop, an error called "Kernel_data_inpage(http.sys)" used to come on my upgraded windows 8.1. Whats the issue?

So what should i do? Is there any problem with my hardware? Is my hard drive having bad sectors and is that causing the problem?

Maintenance :: Unexplained 100% Disk Usage At Bootup After 8.1 Update

Nov 17, 2013

I just updated to 8.1 two days ago. I agreed to the update when my computer boot up, without issue, and was forced to reboot immediately (which, by the way, is idiotic. I wanted to do the install at night when I went to bed not lose my only computer for 1.5 hours that were suppose to be spent on volunteer activities because it won't let me delay the install!)

When my computer next booted up it was SLOW. I opened up task manager and it showed me at 100% disk IO, even though non of the programs running used enough disk IO individually to be anywhere close to the 100% mark. Even after all of my programs *finally* finished booting up the disk IO still showed at 100%, but every program on my task manage showed less then 0.3 MB/s and most were at 0.1. Eventually the diso IO goes back to a reasonable level, but I had enough time to search all over google and fail to find any answers before my IO went to 0 so it was hardly immediately. This is substantially slowing my bootup process.

I have checked all the bootup programs and they all look right. a *quick* scan of msconfig bootup (I already use a selective bootup from msconfig) looked right as well. I ran a malware scan and nothing came up. However, I didn't expect any of those to be the problem anyways. My computer was fin when it booted up without 8.1 I used it for 20 minutes visiting the same website I always do, then I was forced to do an install and everything was broken. This clearly sounds like it was caused by the 8.1 upgrade.

I will update with screen captures of task manager when I next reboot; My disk IO stayed at 100% so long I figured I could take the captures when I needed them, then it finally went to 0% the one time I actually wanted it to stay at 100% ...

Windows 8 Stuck On Diagnosing Your PC After Using Win Disk

May 24, 2014

I recently got all 5 restore disks, language disk, 3 of 3 recovery disks and the 1 of 1 system disk. I followed the instructions and on the 2nd thing where I did not need to insert a disk, I believe it was calling Passwords or something, forget. But it was at 96% when it then started doing [RETRY] about twenty times.

After that, it says ImageX Error: System could not find specified file.

I followed the instructions. After I hit "Ok" it started beeping until I shut it off. Now it won't even boot up. All it says is "Preparing Automatic Repair" and then goes black, then "Diagnosing your PC" comes up. This is the reason before I had to buy the disks, but it'd still turn on. Just not onto the desktop screen.

Setup Installation :: Failed To Upgrade To Windows 8.1 - Reaches Around 82% And Then Stops

Oct 22, 2013

I am trying to upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 PRO. Though, every time I try to install it, it reaches around 82% and then it stops to give an error code. 0x8007004 I think...

Anyway, I've done some researching and apparently the update does not work unless the user directory is not in its default location.

It's true for my setup. I run both an SSD and HDD, and I moved the user directory to the HDD using a Symbolic Link. That way to trick the system that it still is at C: Drive, but is actually writing the data at D: Drive.

Anyway, what are the steps I can take so that I can install Windows 8.1? There are a few features I want to use that are in that update, but this has prevented me from doing so for a while now. I would prefer to keep it setup this way because I don't want to harm my SSD and keep it in tip top shape.

I dread to think how much more space will be taken up when I upgrade to 8.1

Surely Windows updates shouldn't take up 15GB of space...How I can recover some of this space.

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 Stuck In Auto Repair Loop - Nothing Works

May 18, 2014

A couple days ago, I was casually playing Warframe. Tried to alt+tab out to check an IM and my screen went black. Not sure what happened as I could still hear the mouseover sounds as though Warframe were still active. Fiddled around for a few minutes and couldn't get Task Manager to come up, so I decided to just hold the power button on my laptop until it shut down. No harm done, right?

When I booted back up, Windows greeted me with a "Diagnosing Your PC" message under the normal Toshiba boot logo. After it hung there for a few seconds, it moved on to the "Attempting Repairs" screen. Didn't take long for it to decide it wasn't too happy with me for suddenly shutting it down.

Since then, I've been stuck in an auto repair loop. So far I've googled everything I could think of, but it seems my efforts were in vain. Tried putting Hiren's on a thumbdrive and booting from there, and for some reason, Windows just boots right back into the auto repair screen. I've even wiped my 1TB external and put the recovery image from my work PC on there. That didn't work either. I've gone through every thread google's given me and I feel like I'm banging my head against the wall.

I should probably note that formatting is not an option for me. I'd try installing Ubuntu on my external, but since the recovery won't even boot, I feel like that'd be in vain.

Maintenance :: Windows 8 Is Stuck On Boot - Can't Recover / Restore Or Reset

Apr 13, 2013

Laptop Information- HP 2000 Notebook PC

Well, yesterday night, everything was going good until I tried to download League Of Legends on my laptop. I was multi-tasking on facebook, youtube, and a whole other stuff while my laptop was downloading League Of Legends, and then the whole laptop frooze and then I panicked and pressed the power button a couple times. When the laptop booted back up, it was all black and nothing happened.

I was searching online and pressed the F11 button to try and restore the laptop and it did work and I also got into windows 8. It was lagging and very slow when I booted into windows 8, and so I just decided to shutdown the laptop and try to refresh and reset the laptop from boot.

However the automatic recovery didn't work and couldn't repair the laptop. When I was refreshing and reseting the laptop, it wouldn't finish all the way, because it would stop at like 60% and then just stop and freeze. Now, I think I messed up a bit and now I can't boot into Windows 8 or even RESET,RESTORE,or REFRESH. Also I just dod a diagnostic check on UEFI, and my Hard Disk Short DST has failed, so I think that I need to replace my hard disk.

RIGHT NOW, MY LAPTOP BOOTS THIS SCREEN DOWN HERE
RECOVERY
Your PC needs to be repaired

The operating system couldn't be loaded because the system registry file is missing or contains errors.

File: Windowssystem32configsystem
Error code: 0xc000000f

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media(like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer

Press Enter to try again
Press F8 for Startup Settings
Press ESC for UEFI Firmware Settings
Press F9 to use a different operating system

All these options won't work because it will just loop back to this screen that I just showed you.

Maintenance :: Scanning And Repairing Drive (C) Stuck At 10%

Sep 15, 2014

I wanted to do a system restore on my Toshiba laptop but when I tried Windows just restarted, gave me error 0x81000204 and told me I should run chkdsk /R. I tried to run chkdsk and everything was going fine and working at a normal speed until it got to 10%, at which point it got stuck and has been at 10% for over two hours. The circle on screen is still spinning so I know my laptop hasn't frozen or anything. I don't really want to have to cancel the disk check because I want to be able to do my system restore, so I was wondering if there's any way to fix this without cancelling, restarting etc. Or if I have to cancel the disk check, how can I do a system restore without doing another disk check and getting stuck again?

Maintenance :: Stuck Scanning / Repairing C Drive (Chkdsk)

Dec 28, 2012

I'm having troubles with a disk check.

Firstly, I'd like to mention that I've had this PC for a while... I've even taken the whole thing apart and swapped out all of the components (slowly upgraded over time). It's actually at the stage where I've been left with all the old parts as spares, and put everything back together, almost exactly as it was when I bought it. All in all, the initial build is probably 2 or 3 years old now (for the most part, the specs can be found here).

After formatting the hard drive, putting things together back with the old build, and booting up Windows 8 onto it as a gift for my dad, most things were working fine, but one exe file which I copied across wasn't running (at least one which I noticed). I checked up the error code, found people with similar problems, and heard it could just be that the file was corrupted.

So, to get to the main point... I figured it wouldn't hurt to run a disk check, in case there were any other errors or problems. I knew it would take a while, so I opened command prompt, and typed in "chkdsk C: /r", before hitting enter, letting it schedule the disk check for next startup, rebooting the PC, and then leaving it to do its thing. It's been running probably for about 4 or so hours now, and for most of that time it's been at 27% on "Scanning and repairing drive (C:)". Normally I'd just give in and force shut down at this point, but I'm wondering... what's the best course of action if it doesn't get anywhere with this?

I'd really prefer not to force shut down, in case it causes any errors... I mean to say the least it's taken some effort and persistence to get the old build up and running again.
