Maintenance :: Disk Cleanup Not Deleting Files?
Jun 8, 2014
I recently ran a Disk Cleanup as part of my regular maintenance on my new computer. It had over 2.18GB of files to cleanup. That seemed a little high considering I run it every week to 2 weeks. It said it deleted all the files. I ran the Scan Disk again to be sure and it still had 2.18GB of files. I ran it again. Same result. I have a ton of room on the computer right now, but this could be a major problem down the road. Why my Disk Cleanup would appear to be working and then not delete anything?

I've done a clean install of Windows 8 + installed all Windows updates.
After doing so I ran the disk clean-up tool to remove temp files and saved files from Windows updates, however I have ran into a problem. The disk clean-up tool gets stuck when it reaches the Windows update Clean-up stage. It's literally been on there for the past hour. When restarting it does say configuring updates but no % bar and also would just get stuck there unless you manually reboot.

I'm running 8.1 with all updates on, supposedly.
In Control Panel, Troubleshooting, System & Security, Fix Problems with Windows Update, Advanced, Run as Administrator: It says it fixed the problem (whatever that may be). I rerun it. It says it fixed the problem. This goes on ad infinitum. It never says there was nothing to fix.
I have run 'sfc/ scannow' and 'Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth'. The former found nothing. I can't recall whether Dism found anything, but if it did, it fixed it (no errors).
I have also tried Safe Boot and logging on as Administrator, then running Disk Cleanup. It still hangs.

When I ran my disk clean up for the system, it reflected "Windows update cleanup" at 106 mb.
I feel sure it is left overs from my recent upgrade to win 8. To be sure though, is it ok to "erase" in the System clean up?

They do not show in Disk cleanup at all and there must be several GB of them. Since everything is working good, without any problems related to updates I figured I should delete some parasitic files from the system. If nothing at least system/disk backup file will be smaller.

The mother in law has a windows 8 laptop and at the moment it keeps deleting files (ie: my documents, my pictures) and the start menu icons like it is refreshing the profile.
When I complete a restore it goes back to normals okay, then a couple of days later we are back to square one.

I've made my integration which pre-enables the .netframework 3.5 into my .wim images, my AIO includes w8, w8 pro, w8 pro WMC and w8 Enterprise for both architectures, now I'm facing the problem that the iso exceeds the weight by 22 MB, so I'm forced to use a dvd9, now that the feature is preinstaled into de the win images I think that I can reduce the space by deleting the .net framework files for 3.5 in the sxs folder but exactly which files do I have to delete?

Is it possible to change the default for this message box so that next time I hit enter without reading what the message says I don't lose my work?
I just did this rather foolishly and it would be nice if the default was to save the recovered files not to delete them.

Normally in windows 7 I would change the folder persmission to deny "detele files and folders", but these options are greyed out on my windows 8. I'm the admin, and even if I log in as super administrator it's still greyed out.
How can I fix this problem and prevent Windows 8 from deleting thumbnail cache?

Considering the issue with Windows 8 restore points getting deleted, I decided to use Task Manager to create a new one weekly. The problem is that if I do not boot into another partition or manually delete the old restore point, they are going to pile up. Is there a way in Task Manager to delete the old restore point before creating a new one?

There is 3 hdd's installed to my rig:
1 is 55gb kingston ssd where i run my windows
2 is 1tb hitachi where i keep my games and other junk
3 is seagates 250gb laptop hdd.
The main problem was that sometimes when opening or just clicking some folders freezes the file explorer and it crashes after it, so i tought to format the second hdd to make it work better now it seems work ok except for moving files from hdd to another.
When copying the copy speed just at random point drops to 0% and leaves the hdd 3 to hang 100% and the hdd 2 is dropping to 0%.
What i have tried:
I ran hdd regenerator and 18 bad sectors were fixed Also tried to change sata ports That's not much but can't figure anythin else for now and i am starting to suspect that my hdd is gone bad :/ also when downloading ~100mb file from internet it makes same thing but i don't know is it same problem...

Alright, so I was in another OS, and decided to copy over some files. The problem is when I got into Windows it gave me disk errors. So I allowed Windows to repair them automatically, and everything was dandy. But the files that were transferred are nowhere to be seen on both Operating Systems, but the disk space is still being taken up (About 100GB) so how on earth do I get rid of this phantom space?

While I was messing around with my laptop, I decided to add on a fourth operating system, Arch Linux. I suppose I was pushing my luck a bit . Anyways, during the installation, I accidentally deleted the EFI system partition from my laptop, which contained the Windows Boot Manager and necessary files to boot. Great. I only made things worse by trying to troubleshoot, and broke grub as well.
I have a Windows 8 repair disk I made using the Windows 8 built in utility, but it does not boot: the computer turns on, and just hangs at the Toshiba splash screen.
I also can obviously not access the Toshiba recovery partitions, as they are booted into just like Windows itself.
I found a bootx64.efi file on one of my system's recovery partitions (Toshiba seems to have some really complex system going on) and placed it in EFIootootx64.efi. According to this site, FGA: The EFI boot process., I need to place the bkpbootmgfw.efi (on my system, that was what it was called, but I suspect boot-repair (ubuntu tool) messed something up when I was first setting up grub and the ESP and the bkp stands for backup) back onto the EFI System Partition.
Where to look for in the various Windows Imaging Format .wim and .swm files I have laying around my recovery partition(s) in order to extract the necessary EFI files. Any Windows Repair iso that works.

Randomly my disk usage will rocket up to 100% and sit there locking up my computer and freezing things that i am doing. problems started right out of the box when i got my laptop. CCleaner seemed to lower the amount of times it happens, but it still occurs. I've ran virus/malware scans there is nothing. so its ether windows doing stuff on its own randomly then consuming my whole disk or its having compatibility issues with some program that i have running. this is interfering with gaming and school work. I will include pics of multiple instances of it locking up. I can also include a list of the programs I have on here.
i have an

all while missing from my computer , in task manager saw something about some .Net framework doing stuff, some language don't know what optimization, then triggers also the antimalware service, windows update, something called tiworker (windows modules installer) that survived 3 restarts already and also disabling windows update
I do no t want any of that.
What can I do, there are tens , maybe one hundred as far as I know, services. A mire.
Will I be able to still run a windows machine in 2013 with a really bare minimum services?
Does switching to bblean as shell will get rid of many of them? But most surely don't because shell and services two different meals. At least that I will try it to see for myself.

After putting my computer to hibernate and powering it back on, my disk usage would stay at 100%. All the transfer speeds are around 0.1 mb/s and I'm not sure what could be causing the 100% disk usage.
Another thing is that it windows notifies me to scan my hard drive for errors, which I have done, but this keeps repeatedly happening.

I encountered a problem a few weeks ago after I refreshed my laptop when it started refreshing the desktop constantly to the point where I couldn't do anything. After the refresh, the desktop was back to normal, though I noticed my disk usage in the task manager was constantly at 100%. I've been troubleshooting this problem by upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1, I've run chkdsk.exe /f /r, I defragged the disk, ran a virus scan, etc. The only thing that is disabling the service 'superfetch' and/or 'Windows search', though the problem can still arise after doing so. Every now and then the disk usage goes back to it's regular 2-8% but then randomly shoots back up to 70-85-99-100%. It's causing some occasional slowdown.
Here's a screen cap of my resource monitor when it's at 100%:
And here are the specs of my laptop:
-Model: Acer Aspire V5-552
-CPU: AMD Quad-Core A10-5757M @2.5GHz
-RAM: 6GB DDR3 Memory
-HDD: 1000GB
-OS: Windows 8.1

I bought new lenovo ideapad Z400 touch 2 month ago with Windows 8. Last week i upgraded to win 8.1 and recover back to win 8 , since then i have some problems.
When I have the Task Manager open, I notice the disk usage climbing to 50, 75, 100 also the CPU , even though there's scarcely any disk activity going on, the laptop's fan is working harder and very noisy , my processor's speed and heat are jumping high without any programs on.
I tried almost anything, checked for viruses, disabled unnecessary startup programs, clean boot, but it still the same.

It causes freezing in video games and I just want to play all these cool games I bought on steam, not to mention browse the internet without freezing.

I am trying to get a handle on how these 2 functions are related. I assume the Recovery disk would be needed if you can't boot to the computer (assume the OS needs to be present) and does the Recovery disk replace the boot files that may be damaged and then after you get booted up I assume the System Image (is that is referred to as a "backup")?? would be ran to get the computer back to the working order when the Image was taken. Assume that the Recovery disk would take place of the OS installation disk if it were not available and you couldn't just reinstall the OS and so you could load the Image.

Today I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. For some reason, after upgrading, my hard disk usage is always hovering at around 60% usage and my CPU usage is always hovering at around 50%. This is when the PC is idle. When I was using 7, the disk would rarely jump over 30% usage and the CPU would never go above 7% when idle. The sound of the hard disk constantly working away is doing my head in, not to mention it's at around 50 degrees as opposed to 45 degrees previously.
