The logon screen on my computer is not showing the icons for switch user, power, ease access, etc. The only thing I've done recently is uninstalled some fonts. Thinking this may have caused the problem, I reinstalled them but I'm still having this problem.
View 6 RepliesI have checked in the only two places I was aware of that would cause this:
Folder Options - View ....however, there is no option there to check show Thumbnails. I believe this option should be there at the top, but it isnt.
I also went to Properties of My Computer, Advanced, Performance. It is checked there to show Thumbnails.
But for whatever reason, I only see icons when I should see thumbnails. And yes, I have changed the view to Medium, large, extra large.
The icons on the start menu and login screen are missing. how do i solve this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedEvery time I Restart my Laptop, the Lock Screen does not show the Welcome Screen and skips directly to the User Account login screen. Actually, it shows a darkish blue screen for a couple of seconds and then jumps to the user account login.
When I use the logout function or the shutdown (and I power it back on) everything works normally.
I have ran SFC / Scannow in windows (8.1 by the way).
Can I have icons on the Start screen that do not show up on the Apps screen ?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have windows 8 installed for just over a week now. Everything seems to work just fine untill today i found something that rather annoys me.
When in the start/metro menu you right click on the bottom right corner you will have the 'all apps' option. When i clicked on it a few days ago you go to see a list of all your installed apps, like it supposed to. But now when i click on it i just get a blank (in my case) green screen with nothing on it. Pressing the windows key will get me back at start.
Also when searching for apps (windows key+q) it seems like the searching freezes and crashes sending me back to the original start screen. I have the same problem on my laptop where i installed the same windows 8
I'm using the 32 bit version of Windows 8 pro.
Is there a way to align the icons in the Start Screen of Win 8.1? The customization feature won't do it and there is no apparent way to align the icons as the user may want to: (e.g. 8 icons in two neat columns).
When I try to align the icons the snap back and forth and it is very difficult, if not impossible to place them where I want.

The icons changes like box show in the screenshot. The last thing I remember before it's happen is, I installed all the font that I copied from other computer using windows 7.
I have an HP media center M7360N desktop with a Pentium D dual core, 4gb ram and a Ge Force 6200 SE card running 9.18.13.774 drivers. I get this screen mess sometimes when on the web and on the desktop.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. It was fine until I decided to change my account to a microsoft account.
After logging out and restarting, I could not see my user on the log on screen. It still showed up in Control Panel and PC Settings after logging in as another Admin.
To try to fix this I created a new user and was going to copy files into it but this new user didn't show up either.
Is this a Win 8.1 bug or is there something you have to do?
I can always revert to Windows 8 because I backed up my computer before updating but I would not prefer this.
The icons on the taskbar at the bottom of my screen become distorted. They'll generate copies of themselves, overlap other icons, and the start menu button disappears. Whenever I try to click an icon, it opens the icon to its left, as if the mouse needs to be calibrated. When I open the start menu, every time I scroll my mouse across a shortcut, it disappears. Poof. Just like that. I scroll my mouse over the icons a few more times, and usually, they'll come back, but if I scroll again, they disappear once more. Thus, I'm not able to open any programs from the start menu. Additionally, my background (which I normally have cycling through a folder of wallpapers) goes completely black.
This happens without warning; sometimes I'm playing video games and it happens when I alt-tab, sometimes I'm browsing the internet and it happens randomly, once I was just looking at my screen without running any programs or tasks and it happened. It will fix itself anywhere from a span of 2 minutes to half an hour.
I am getting quite used to the start screen on Windows 8 (as opposed to a start menu (?) - this change in nomenclature is sure to confuse users...)
I followed the tip on organizing into groups - quite useful.
However, once I have my start screen organized the way I like, I find that within groups icons tend to 'shift' positions randomly - which is irritating.
Any way to 'lock' them so once they are in position - one would think MS would have thought of that already.
Noticed something interesting - I am on a dual monitor set-up and when I open the start screen on a different monitor the organization of the start screen changes. Maybe that is why it is not an option (?) ...
I have a problem I can not see more in the icon bar of the start screen of my windows 8.1 tried to explain to a previous restore point but without result ..... I do not want to reformat everything ...
View 9 Replies View RelatedBasically when I go go onto the start menu there are these black rectangles everywhere (screenshots will be added) also when i attempt to save an image off google i have to manually scroll around the screen to be able to see the options, this happens for all windows 8 apps.
I'm using a HP envy, 8gb ram, windows 8 64 bit operating system and radeon graphics.
I recover, my recover partition, to a usb 2.0 disc, i try to recover from there, but it only show me the blue screen options, to choose language and keyboard layout, then i choose again the same driver, and same thing again, i can't pass from here, i even try to boot from the usb disc, and same thing.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows 8 tablet/ultrabook (Lenovo Yoga). I primarily use the desktop to operate and have many icons and shortcuts arranged to facilitate the use of my computer.
When I use my PC in tablet mode, sometimes I rotate the screen to read PDFs, certain webpages, etc. When I rotate the screen back to a horizontal mode, all my carefully placed icons and shortcuts are shuffled around the desktop. I realize that when I rotate the screen the icons move because they have to temporarily reorient themselves to portrait vs landscape, but shouldn't they return to their original position when I rotate the screen back to the horizontal mode?
Is there a way to lock icons in place with Windows 8?
I put my computer in sleep mode, as I have done many times. But this time, after I brought it back on, my Start Screen was missing all the tiles. AND, I can't put them back. When I click the "All Apps" button at the bottom, my screen just goes blank.
My desktop works, so I haven't lost anything. Just have a totally disfunctional Start Screen.
Symptoms:
1) After boot, I'm at the Start Screen.
2) The screen isn't blank. It's got the background and the START in the corner. It's just blank of tiles. There are no tiles on my Start screen.
3) If I go to bottom and right click, I see "All Apps" and if I click that, the screen then goes blank, and the background changes. The screen is totally blank and nothing works except the side menus. There are no tiles listed and no text on the screen.
I installed a copy of Windows 8 Professional. The "Live Tiles" on my new Start screen aren't working. I can click on the Store icon and it comes up, then immediately closes. I've turned off live updating and turned on app locations and all that. It still won't come on.
I've tried it with all my new apps, and none of them work, except for the Maps app.
I am involved in prepping several Panasonic Toughpads for deployment in our environment w/ Windows 8.1 installed. While prepping, we are logging in with domain accounts that have some domain admin privileges for various setups on the local machine.
Upon completion of setup, logging in as the assigned domain user, which, on these systems, will be a local admin. However, after a few seconds, where the account name is displayed on the top right corner of the start menu, it shows the logged in domain username--as it should--then quickly changes to show the previously logged in domain admin user's name.
This is phenomenon is occurring for myself and two of my coworkers who are using isolated domain admin logins assigned to them.
Troubleshooting that has already happened: restarted the system, deleted the domain admin's user folder and associated registry key in the ProfileList to no avail. Logged in as yet a different user, and back to the assigned user's account but still showing my domain admin name in the account name. Is this getting circular yet?
I went to power up my PC today and after welcome screen the screen started flickering and no icons or anything was on the screen except start tray which only had start button, touch keyboard button and address bar, none of which were responding.
I managed to launch task manager through ctrl-alt-delete (that didn't flicker, but taskmgr did). I launched cmd through taskmgr and managed to stop the flickering by terminating endless stream of svchost.exe processes. Couple of seconds after I do this, BSoD appears giving 0xc000021a error. Msconfig can't configure the PC to boot in safe mode. What do I do?
Is there any way to disable Windows from automatically placing desktop icons on the start screen? Or is there a way to remove multiple icons at one time?

View 9 Replies View RelatedWindows 8 start screen adds 2 new columns when I add 2 items to a block of programs.
I end up with all these categories that have 2 or 3 icons off to the side when one new column would do it in a much more compact format. Some categories could be only one column but it still insists on using 2.
Am I missing something some place in the settings or something?
I wanted to post a screenshot but none of my screen capture software seems to work in Metro.
Snipping tool, Camstudio, and Fraps all close the Metro screen as soon as I activate them.
I have The Weather app permissions set to allow it to display the weather on the lock screen. This has been working fine for some time -- up until now.
Now it only shows alerts, not the temperature.
This happened after I uninstalled all my metro apps this morning, rebooted then reinstalled them. Chrome also updated in the meantime.
They're the only icons that are broke so clearly something has happened between now and then to stop icons displaying properly for new programs.
Is it worth rebuilding icon cache? Not sure the icons for metro are the same as filetype icons in Explorer though.
I have pasted some English alphabet OpenType font files into control panel / appearance and personalisation / fonts but they do not show up in the fonts folder. If I try to paste the files again it tells me "the gotham light file font is already installed - do you want to replace it?"
So if the font files are installed why can't I see them in the fonts folder?
I have tried unchecking "hide fonts based on language settings" but that does not seem to work. The fonts do not show up in Microsoft Word or Adobe CS6 and I get the same problem on my Windows 7 machine.
After recently installing stardock suite with icon manager, i decided to uninstall the program and go back to just using rainmeter. After doing so, it seems like all my icons (programs and windows defaults) are one icon and corrupt.
Ive already done the following:
installed icon manager and restored windows defaults with no luck
rebuilt windows icon cache and thumb cache with no luck
restarted explorer.exe
This is frustrating to say the least and i really dont know why these methods dont work..

So my question is about how to change an icon in Windows 8. All I've really seen is how to change icons of folders, and icons of file types, but is it possible to change a single file's icon?
For example, let's say I have a recorded .mp3. I want to change that .mp3's icon to something different than just the normal .mp3 icon one of these guys. Is it possible to change only the icon of one specific file?
